We introduce a universal class of geometric deep learning models, called metric hypertransformers (MHTs), capable of approximating any adapted map $F:\mathscr{X}^{\mathbb{Z}}\rightarrow \mathscr{Y}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ with approximable complexity, where $\mathscr{X}\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ and $\yyy$ is any suitable metric space, and $\mathscr{X}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ (resp. $\mathscr{Y}^{\mathbb{Z}}$) capture all discrete-time paths on $\mathscr{X}$ (resp. $\mathscr{Y}$). Suitable spaces $\mathscr{Y}$ include various (adapted) Wasserstein spaces, all Fr\'{e}chet spaces admitting a Schauder basis, and a variety of Riemannian manifolds arising from information geometry. Even in the static case, where $f:\mathscr{X}\rightarrow \mathscr{Y}$ is a H\"{o}lder map, our results provide the first (quantitative) universal approximation theorem compatible with any such $\mathscr{X}$ and $\mathscr{Y}$. Our universal approximation theorems are quantitative, and they depend on the regularity of $F$, the choice of activation function, the metric entropy and diameter of $\mathscr{X}$, and on the regularity of the compact set of paths whereon the approximation is performed. Our guiding examples originate from mathematical finance. Notably, the MHT models introduced here are able to approximate a broad range of stochastic processes' kernels, including solutions to SDEs, many processes with arbitrarily long memory, and functions mapping sequential data to sequences of forward rate curves.

Safety is critical in autonomous robotic systems. A safe control law ensures forward invariance of a safe set (a subset in the state space). It has been extensively studied regarding how to derive a safe control law with a control-affine analytical dynamic model. However, in complex environments and tasks, it is challenging and time-consuming to obtain a principled analytical model of the system. In these situations, data-driven learning is extensively used and the learned models are encoded in neural networks. How to formally derive a safe control law with Neural Network Dynamic Models (NNDM) remains unclear due to the lack of computationally tractable methods to deal with these black-box functions. In fact, even finding the control that minimizes an objective for NNDM without any safety constraint is still challenging. In this work, we propose MIND-SIS (Mixed Integer for Neural network Dynamic model with Safety Index Synthesis), the first method to derive safe control laws for NNDM. The method includes two parts: 1) SIS: an algorithm for the offline synthesis of the safety index (also called as barrier function), which uses evolutionary methods and 2) MIND: an algorithm for online computation of the optimal and safe control signal, which solves a constrained optimization using a computationally efficient encoding of neural networks. It has been theoretically proved that MIND-SIS guarantees forward invariance and finite convergence. And it has been numerically validated that MIND-SIS achieves safe and optimal control of NNDM. From our experiments, the optimality gap is less than $10^{-8}$, and the safety constraint violation is $0$.

In this work, we consider the problem of finding a set of tours to a traveling salesperson problem (TSP) instance maximizing diversity, while satisfying a given cost constraint. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying niching to maximize diversity rather than simply maintaining it. To this end, we introduce a 2-stage approach where a simple niching memetic algorithm (NMA), derived from a state-of-the-art for multi-solution TSP, is combined with a baseline diversifying algorithm. The most notable feature of the proposed NMA is the use of randomized improvement-first local search instead of 2-opt. Our experiment on TSPLIB instances shows that while the populations evolved by our NMA tend to contain clusters at tight quality constraints, they frequently occupy distant basins of attraction rather than close-by regions, improving on the baseline diversification in terms of sum-sum diversity. Compared to the original NMA, ours, despite its simplicity, finds more distant solutions of higher quality within less running time, by a large margin.

In this work, we introduce a novel approach to formulating an artificial viscosity for shock capturing in nonlinear hyperbolic systems by utilizing the property that the solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not reversible in time in the vicinity of shocks. The proposed approach does not require any additional governing equations or a priori knowledge of the hyperbolic system in question, is independent of the mesh and approximation order, and requires the use of only one tunable parameter. The primary novelty is that the resulting artificial viscosity is unique for each component of the conservation law which is advantageous for systems in which some components exhibit discontinuities while others do not. The efficacy of the method is shown in numerical experiments of multi-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws such as nonlinear transport, Euler equations, and ideal magnetohydrodynamics using a high-order discontinuous spectral element method on unstructured grids.

Linear mixed models (LMMs) are instrumental for regression analysis with structured dependence, such as grouped, clustered, or multilevel data. However, selection among the covariates--while accounting for this structured dependence--remains a challenge. We introduce a Bayesian decision analysis for subset selection with LMMs. Using a Mahalanobis loss function that incorporates the structured dependence, we derive optimal linear coefficients for (i) any given subset of variables and (ii) all subsets of variables that satisfy a cardinality constraint. Crucially, these estimates inherit shrinkage or regularization and uncertainty quantification from the underlying Bayesian model, and apply for any well-specified Bayesian LMM. More broadly, our decision analysis strategy deemphasizes the role of a single "best" subset, which is often unstable and limited in its information content, and instead favors a collection of near-optimal subsets. This collection is summarized by key member subsets and variable-specific importance metrics. Customized subset search and out-of-sample approximation algorithms are provided for more scalable computing. These tools are applied to simulated data and a longitudinal physical activity dataset, and demonstrate excellent prediction, estimation, and selection ability.

In this paper we describe two simple, fast, space-efficient algorithms for finding all matches of an indeterminate pattern $\s{p} = \s{p}[1..m]$ in an indeterminate string $\s{x} = \s{x}[1..n]$, where both \s{p} and \s{x} are defined on a "small" ordered alphabet $\Sigma$ -- say, $\sigma = |\Sigma| \le 9$. Both algorithms depend on a preprocessing phase that replaces $\Sigma$ by an integer alphabet $\Sigma_I$ of size $\sigma_I = \sigma$ which (reversibly, in time linear in string length) maps both \s{x} and \s{p} into equivalent regular strings \s{y} and \s{q}, respectively, on $\Sigma_I$, whose maximum (indeterminate) letter can be expressed in a 32-bit word (for $\sigma \le 4$, thus for DNA sequences, an 8-bit representation suffices). We first describe an efficient version \textsc{KMP\_Indet} of the venerable Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm to find all occurrences of \s{q} in \s{y} (that is, of \s{p} in \s{x}), but, whenever necessary, using the prefix array, rather than the border array, to control shifts of the transformed pattern \s{q} along the transformed string \s{y}. %Although requiring $\O(m^2n)$ time in the theoretical worst case, in cases of practical interest \textsc{KMP\_Indet} executes in $\O(n)$ time. This paper studies the application of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (C-NOMA) networks with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We aim for maximizing the rate of the strong user with guaranteed weak user's quality of service (QoS) by jointly optimizing power splitting factors, beamforming coefficients, and RIS reflection coefficients in two transmission phases. The formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its complex and non-convex constraints. To tackle this challenging problem, we first use alternating optimization (AO) framework to transform it into three subproblems, and then use the penalty-based arithmetic-geometric mean approximation (PBAGM) algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method to solve them. Numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the baseline schemes.

Computing a dense subgraph is a fundamental problem in graph mining, with a diverse set of applications ranging from electronic commerce to community detection in social networks. In many of these applications, the underlying context is better modelled as a weighted hypergraph that keeps evolving with time. This motivates the problem of maintaining the densest subhypergraph of a weighted hypergraph in a {\em dynamic setting}, where the input keeps changing via a sequence of updates (hyperedge insertions/deletions). Previously, the only known algorithm for this problem was due to Hu et al. [HWC17]. This algorithm worked only on unweighted hypergraphs, and had an approximation ratio of $(1+\epsilon)r^2$ and an update time of $O(\text{poly} (r, \log n))$, where $r$ denotes the maximum rank of the input across all the updates. We obtain a new algorithm for this problem, which works even when the input hypergraph is weighted. Our algorithm has a significantly improved (near-optimal) approximation ratio of $(1+\epsilon)$ that is independent of $r$, and a similar update time of $O(\text{poly} (r, \log n))$. It is the first $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm even for the special case of weighted simple graphs. To complement our theoretical analysis, we perform experiments with our dynamic algorithm on large-scale, real-world data-sets. Our algorithm significantly outperforms the state of the art [HWC17] both in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

In this article we suggest two discretization methods based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) for planar linear elasticity. On the one hand, we apply the well-known ansatz of weakly imposed symmetry for the stress tensor and obtain a well-posed mixed formulation. Such modified mixed problems have been already studied by different authors. But we concentrate on the exploitation of IGA results to handle also curved boundary geometries. On the other hand, we consider the more complicated situation of strong symmetry, i.e. we discretize the mixed weak form determined by the so-called Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. We show the existence of suitable approximate fields leading to an inf-sup stable saddle-point problem. For both discretization approaches we prove convergence statements and in case of weak symmetry we illustrate the approximation behavior by means of several numerical experiments.

In this paper, we describe and implement an extension of $\mathsf{C}$-sets having data attributes with fixed types, such as graphs with labeled vertices or real-valued edge weights. We call such structures "acsets," short for "attributed $\mathsf{C}$-sets." Derived from previous work on algebraic databases, acsets are a joint generalization of graphs and data frames. They also encompass more elaborate graph-like objects such as wiring diagrams and Petri nets with rate constants. We develop the mathematical theory of acsets and then describe a generic implementation in the Julia programming language, which uses advanced language features to achieve performance comparable with specialized data structures.

Universal coding of integers~(UCI) is a class of variable-length code, such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to $\max\{1,H(P)\}$ is within a constant factor, where $H(P)$ is the Shannon entropy of the decreasing probability distribution $P$. However, if we consider the ratio of the expected codeword length to $H(P)$, the ratio tends to infinity by using UCI, when $H(P)$ tends to zero. To solve this issue, this paper introduces a class of codes, termed generalized universal coding of integers~(GUCI), such that the ratio of the expected codeword length to $H(P)$ is within a constant factor $K$. First, the definition of GUCI is proposed and the coding structure of GUCI is introduced. Next, we propose a class of GUCI $\mathcal{C}$ to achieve the expansion factor $K_{\mathcal{C}}=2$ and show that the optimal GUCI is in the range $1\leq K_{\mathcal{C}}^{*}\leq 2$. Then, by comparing UCI and GUCI, we show that when the entropy is very large or $P(0)$ is not large, there are also cases where the average codeword length of GUCI is shorter. Finally, the asymptotically optimal GUCI is presented.
