This paper investigates the energy efficiency of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, in which one multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits unified ISAC signals to a multi-antenna communication user (CU) and at the same time use the echo signals to estimate an extended target. We focus on one particular ISAC transmission block and take into account the practical on-off non-transmission power at the BS. Under this setup, we minimize the energy consumption at the BS while ensuring a minimum average data rate requirement for communication and a maximum Cram\'er-Rao bound (CRB) requirement for target estimation, by jointly optimizing the transmit covariance matrix and the ``on'' duration for active transmission. We obtain the optimal solution to the rate-and-CRB-constrained energy minimization problem in a semi-closed form. Interestingly, the obtained optimal solution is shown to unify the spectrum-efficient and energy-efficient communications and sensing designs. In particular, for the special MIMO sensing case with rate constraint inactive, the optimal solution follows the isotropic transmission with shortest ``on'' duration, in which the BS radiates the required sensing energy by using sufficiently high power over the shortest duration. For the general ISAC case, the optimal transmit covariance solution is of full rank and follows the eigenmode transmission based on the communication channel, while the optimal ``on'' duration is determined based on both the rate and CRB constraints. Numerical results show that the proposed ISAC design achieves significantly reduced energy consumption as compared to the benchmark schemes based on isotropic transmission, always-on transmission, and sensing or communications only designs, especially when the rate and CRB constraints become stringent.

The paper proposes a novel End-to-End Learning and Repair (E2ELR) architecture for training optimization proxies for economic dispatch problems. E2ELR combines deep neural networks with closed-form, differentiable repair layers, thereby integrating learning and feasibility in an end-to-end fashion. E2ELR is also trained with self-supervised learning, removing the need for labeled data and the solving of numerous optimization problems offline. E2ELR is evaluated on industry-size power grids with tens of thousands of buses using an economic dispatch that co-optimizes energy and reserves. The results demonstrate that the self-supervised E2ELR achieves state-of-the-art performance, with optimality gaps that outperform other baselines by at least an order of magnitude.

This paper proposes an elegant optimization framework consisting of a mix of linear-matrix-inequality and second-order-cone constraints. The proposed framework generalizes the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) enabled solution to the typical transmit beamforming problems presented in the form of quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) in the literature. It is proved that the optimization problems subsumed under the framework always admit a rank-one optimal solution when they are feasible and their optimal solutions are not trivial. This finding indicates that the relaxation is tight as the optimal solution of the original beamforming QCQP can be straightforwardly obtained from that of the SDR counterpart without any loss of optimality. Four representative examples of transmit beamforming, i.e., transmit beamforming with perfect channel state information (CSI), transmit beamforming with imperfect CSI, chance-constraint approach for imperfect CSI, and reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS) aided beamforming, are shown to demonstrate how the proposed optimization framework can be realized in deriving the SDR counterparts for different beamforming designs.

This paper investigates the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access in an asynchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, with both timing and frequency offsets (TFO) and non-negligible user collisions. The proposed coding framework splits the data into two parts encoded by sparse regression code (SPARC) and low-density parity check (LDPC) code. Multistage orthogonal pilots are transmitted in the first part to reduce collision density. Unlike existing schemes requiring a quantization codebook with a large size for estimating TFO, we establish a \textit{graph-based channel reconstruction and collision resolution (GB-CR$^2$)} algorithm to iteratively reconstruct channels, resolve collisions, and compensate for TFO rotations on the formulated graph jointly among multiple stages. We further propose to leverage the geometric characteristics of signal constellations to correct TFO estimations. Exhaustive simulations demonstrate remarkable performance superiority in channel estimation and data recovery with substantial complexity reduction compared to state-of-the-art schemes.

Delay alignment modulation (DAM) is a promising technology to achieve ISI-free wideband communication, by leveraging delay compensation and path-based beamforming, rather than the conventional channel equalization or multi-carrier transmission. In particular, when there exist a few strong time-dispersive channel paths, DAM can effectively align different propagation delays and achieve their constructive superposition, thus especially appealing for intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs)-aided communications with controllable multi-paths. In this paper, we apply DAM to multi-IRS aided wideband communication and study its practical design and achievable performance. We first provide an asymptotic analysis showing that when the number of base station (BS) antennas is much larger than that of IRSs, an ISI-free channel can be established with appropriate delay pre-compensation and the simple path-based MRT beamforming. We then consider the general system setup and study the problem of joint path-based beamforming and phase shifts design for DAM transmission, by considering the three classical beamforming techniques on a per-path basis, namely the low-complexity path-based MRT beamforming, the path-based ZF beamforming for ISI-free DAM communication, and the optimal path-based MMSE beamforming. As a comparison, OFDM-based multi-IRS aided communication is considered. Simulation results demonstrate that DAM outperforms OFDM in terms of spectral efficiency, BER, and PAPR.

This paper proposes a solution for energy-efficient communication in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks. The limited battery life of UAVs is a major concern for their sustainable operation, and RIS has emerged as a promising solution to reducing the energy consumption of communication systems. The paper formulates the problem of maximizing the energy efficiency of the network as a mixed integer non-linear program, in which UAV placement, UAV beamforming, On-Off strategy of RIS elements, and phase shift of RIS elements are optimized. The proposed solution utilizes the block coordinate descent approach and a combination of continuous and binary genetic algorithms. Moreover, for optimizing the UAV placement, Adam optimizer is used. The simulation results show that the proposed solution outperforms the existing literature. Specifically, we compared the proposed method with the successive convex approximation (SCA) approach for optimizing the phase shift of RIS elements.

We propose fast and communication-efficient optimization algorithms for multi-robot rotation averaging and translation estimation problems that arise from collaborative simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), structure-from-motion (SfM), and camera network localization applications. Our methods are based on theoretical relations between the Hessians of the underlying Riemannian optimization problems and the Laplacians of suitably weighted graphs. We leverage these results to design a collaborative solver in which robots coordinate with a central server to perform approximate second-order optimization, by solving a Laplacian system at each iteration. Crucially, our algorithms permit robots to employ spectral sparsification to sparsify intermediate dense matrices before communication, and hence provide a mechanism to trade off accuracy with communication efficiency with provable guarantees. We perform rigorous theoretical analysis of our methods and prove that they enjoy (local) linear rate of convergence. Furthermore, we show that our methods can be combined with graduated non-convexity to achieve outlier-robust estimation. Extensive experiments on real-world SLAM and SfM scenarios demonstrate the superior convergence rate and communication efficiency of our methods.

This paper proposes a generic method to learn interpretable convolutional filters in a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for object classification, where each interpretable filter encodes features of a specific object part. Our method does not require additional annotations of object parts or textures for supervision. Instead, we use the same training data as traditional CNNs. Our method automatically assigns each interpretable filter in a high conv-layer with an object part of a certain category during the learning process. Such explicit knowledge representations in conv-layers of CNN help people clarify the logic encoded in the CNN, i.e., answering what patterns the CNN extracts from an input image and uses for prediction. We have tested our method using different benchmark CNNs with various structures to demonstrate the broad applicability of our method. Experiments have shown that our interpretable filters are much more semantically meaningful than traditional filters.

The recent proliferation of knowledge graphs (KGs) coupled with incomplete or partial information, in the form of missing relations (links) between entities, has fueled a lot of research on knowledge base completion (also known as relation prediction). Several recent works suggest that convolutional neural network (CNN) based models generate richer and more expressive feature embeddings and hence also perform well on relation prediction. However, we observe that these KG embeddings treat triples independently and thus fail to cover the complex and hidden information that is inherently implicit in the local neighborhood surrounding a triple. To this effect, our paper proposes a novel attention based feature embedding that captures both entity and relation features in any given entity's neighborhood. Additionally, we also encapsulate relation clusters and multihop relations in our model. Our empirical study offers insights into the efficacy of our attention based model and we show marked performance gains in comparison to state of the art methods on all datasets.

High spectral dimensionality and the shortage of annotations make hyperspectral image (HSI) classification a challenging problem. Recent studies suggest that convolutional neural networks can learn discriminative spatial features, which play a paramount role in HSI interpretation. However, most of these methods ignore the distinctive spectral-spatial characteristic of hyperspectral data. In addition, a large amount of unlabeled data remains an unexploited gold mine for efficient data use. Therefore, we proposed an integration of generative adversarial networks (GANs) and probabilistic graphical models for HSI classification. Specifically, we used a spectral-spatial generator and a discriminator to identify land cover categories of hyperspectral cubes. Moreover, to take advantage of a large amount of unlabeled data, we adopted a conditional random field to refine the preliminary classification results generated by GANs. Experimental results obtained using two commonly studied datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework achieved encouraging classification accuracy using a small number of data for training.

In this paper, we propose the joint learning attention and recurrent neural network (RNN) models for multi-label classification. While approaches based on the use of either model exist (e.g., for the task of image captioning), training such existing network architectures typically require pre-defined label sequences. For multi-label classification, it would be desirable to have a robust inference process, so that the prediction error would not propagate and thus affect the performance. Our proposed model uniquely integrates attention and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) models, which not only addresses the above problem but also allows one to identify visual objects of interests with varying sizes without the prior knowledge of particular label ordering. More importantly, label co-occurrence information can be jointly exploited by our LSTM model. Finally, by advancing the technique of beam search, prediction of multiple labels can be efficiently achieved by our proposed network model.
