In cone-beam X-ray transmission imaging, due to the divergence of X-rays, imaged structures with different depths have different magnification factors on an X-ray detector, which results in perspective deformation. Perspective deformation causes difficulty in direct, accurate geometric assessments of anatomical structures. In this work, to reduce perspective deformation in X-ray images acquired from regular cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems, we investigate on learning perspective deformation, i.e., converting perspective projections into orthogonal projections. Directly converting a single perspective projection image into an orthogonal projection image is extremely challenging due to the lack of depth information. Therefore, we propose to utilize one additional perspective projection, a complementary (180-degree) or orthogonal (90-degree) view, to provide a certain degree of depth information. Furthermore, learning perspective deformation in different spatial domains is investigated. Our proposed method is evaluated on numerical spherical bead phantoms as well as patients' chest and head X-ray data. The experiments on numerical bead phantom data demonstrate that learning perspective deformation in polar coordinates has significant advantages over learning in Cartesian coordinates, as root-mean-square error (RMSE) decreases from 5.31 to 1.40, while learning in log-polar coordinates has no further considerable improvement (RMSE = 1.85). In addition, using a complementary view (RMSE = 1.40) is better than an orthogonal view (RMSE = 3.87). The experiments on patients' chest and head data demonstrate that learning perspective deformation using dual complementary views is also applicable in anatomical X-ray data, allowing accurate cardiothoracic ratio measurements in chest X-ray images and cephalometric analysis in synthetic cephalograms from cone-beam X-ray projections.

When IP-packet processing is unconditionally carried out on behalf of an operating system kernel thread, processing systems can experience overload in high incoming traffic scenarios. This is especially worrying for embedded real-time devices controlling their physical environment in industrial IoT scenarios and automotive systems. We propose an embedded real-time aware IP stack adaption with an early demultiplexing scheme for incoming packets and subsequent per-flow aperiodic scheduling. By instrumenting existing embedded IP stacks, rigid prioritization with minimal latency is deployed without the need of further task resources. Simple mitigation techniques can be applied to individual flows, causing hardly measurable overhead while at the same time protecting the system from overload conditions. Our IP stack adaption is able to reduce the low-priority packet processing time by over 86% compared to an unmodified stack. The network subsystem can thereby remain active at a 7x higher general traffic load before disabling the receive IRQ as a last resort to assure deadlines.

Recently, deep convolution neural networks (CNNs) steered face super-resolution methods have achieved great progress in restoring degraded facial details by jointly training with facial priors. However, these methods have some obvious limitations. On the one hand, multi-task joint learning requires additional marking on the dataset, and the introduced prior network will significantly increase the computational cost of the model. On the other hand, the limited receptive field of CNN will reduce the fidelity and naturalness of the reconstructed facial images, resulting in suboptimal reconstructed images. In this work, we propose an efficient CNN-Transformer Cooperation Network (CTCNet) for face super-resolution tasks, which uses the multi-scale connected encoder-decoder architecture as the backbone. Specifically, we first devise a novel Local-Global Feature Cooperation Module (LGCM), which is composed of a Facial Structure Attention Unit (FSAU) and a Transformer block, to promote the consistency of local facial detail and global facial structure restoration simultaneously. Then, we design an efficient Local Feature Refinement Module (LFRM) to enhance the local facial structure information. Finally, to further improve the restoration of fine facial details, we present a Multi-scale Feature Fusion Unit (MFFU) to adaptively fuse the features from different stages in the encoder procedure. Comprehensive evaluations on various datasets have assessed that the proposed CTCNet can outperform other state-of-the-art methods significantly.

Most deep learning models for computational imaging regress a single reconstructed image. In practice, however, ill-posedness, nonlinearity, model mismatch, and noise often conspire to make such point estimates misleading or insufficient. The Bayesian approach models images and (noisy) measurements as jointly distributed random vectors and aims to approximate the posterior distribution of unknowns. Recent variational inference methods based on conditional normalizing flows are a promising alternative to traditional MCMC methods, but they come with drawbacks: excessive memory and compute demands for moderate to high resolution images and underwhelming performance on hard nonlinear problems. In this work, we propose C-Trumpets -- conditional injective flows specifically designed for imaging problems, which greatly diminish these challenges. Injectivity reduces memory footprint and training time while low-dimensional latent space together with architectural innovations like fixed-volume-change layers and skip-connection revnet layers, C-Trumpets outperform regular conditional flow models on a variety of imaging and image restoration tasks, including limited-view CT and nonlinear inverse scattering, with a lower compute and memory budget. C-Trumpets enable fast approximation of point estimates like MMSE or MAP as well as physically-meaningful uncertainty quantification.

Annotating data for supervised learning can be costly. When the annotation budget is limited, active learning can be used to select and annotate those observations that are likely to give the most gain in model performance. We propose an active learning algorithm that, in addition to selecting which observation to annotate, selects the precision of the annotation that is acquired. Assuming that annotations with low precision are cheaper to obtain, this allows the model to explore a larger part of the input space, with the same annotation costs. We build our acquisition function on the previously proposed BALD objective for Gaussian Processes, and empirically demonstrate the gains of being able to adjust the annotation precision in the active learning loop.

Speech impairments due to cerebral lesions and degenerative disorders can be devastating. For humans with severe speech deficits, imagined speech in the brain-computer interface has been a promising hope for reconstructing the neural signals of speech production. However, studies in the EEG-based imagined speech domain still have some limitations due to high variability in spatial and temporal information and low signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, we investigated the neural signals for two groups of native speakers with two tasks with different languages, English and Chinese. Our assumption was that English, a non-tonal and phonogram-based language, would have spectral differences in neural computation compared to Chinese, a tonal and ideogram-based language. The results showed the significant difference in the relative power spectral density between English and Chinese in specific frequency band groups. Also, the spatial evaluation of Chinese native speakers in the theta band was distinctive during the imagination task. Hence, this paper would suggest the key spectral and spatial information of word imagination with specialized language while decoding the neural signals of speech.

Recently, self-supervised instance discrimination methods have achieved significant success in learning visual representations from unlabeled photographic images. However, given the marked differences between photographic and medical images, the efficacy of instance-based objectives, focusing on learning the most discriminative global features in the image (i.e., wheels in bicycle), remains unknown in medical imaging. Our preliminary analysis showed that high global similarity of medical images in terms of anatomy hampers instance discrimination methods for capturing a set of distinct features, negatively impacting their performance on medical downstream tasks. To alleviate this limitation, we have developed a simple yet effective self-supervised framework, called Context-Aware instance Discrimination (CAiD). CAiD aims to improve instance discrimination learning by providing finer and more discriminative information encoded from a diverse local context of unlabeled medical images. We conduct a systematic analysis to investigate the utility of the learned features from a three-pronged perspective: (i) generalizability and transferability, (ii) separability in the embedding space, and (iii) reusability. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that CAiD (1) enriches representations learned from existing instance discrimination methods; (2) delivers more discriminative features by adequately capturing finer contextual information from individual medial images; and (3) improves reusability of low/mid-level features compared to standard instance discriminative methods. The Model Order Reduction (MOR) technique can provide compact numerical models for fast simulation. Different from the intrusive MOR methods, the non-intrusive MOR does not require access to the Full Order Models (FOMs), especially system matrices. Since the non-intrusive MOR methods strongly rely on the snapshots of the FOMs, constructing good snapshot sets becomes crucial. In this work, we propose a new active learning approach with two novelties. A novel idea with our approach is the use of single-time step snapshots from the system states taken from an estimation of the reduced-state space. These states are selected using a greedy strategy supported by an error estimator based Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Additionally, we introduce a use case-independent validation strategy based on Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning. In this work, we use Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to identify the Reduced Order Model (ROM), however the method could be similarly applied to other ROM identification methods. The performance of the whole workflow is tested by a 2-D thermal conduction and a 3-D vacuum furnace model. With little required user interaction and a training strategy independent to a specific use case, the proposed method offers a huge potential for industrial usage to create so-called executable Digital Twins (DTs).

Most object recognition approaches predominantly focus on learning discriminative visual patterns while overlooking the holistic object structure. Though important, structure modeling usually requires significant manual annotations and therefore is labor-intensive. In this paper, we propose to "look into object" (explicitly yet intrinsically model the object structure) through incorporating self-supervisions into the traditional framework. We show the recognition backbone can be substantially enhanced for more robust representation learning, without any cost of extra annotation and inference speed. Specifically, we first propose an object-extent learning module for localizing the object according to the visual patterns shared among the instances in the same category. We then design a spatial context learning module for modeling the internal structures of the object, through predicting the relative positions within the extent. These two modules can be easily plugged into any backbone networks during training and detached at inference time. Extensive experiments show that our look-into-object approach (LIO) achieves large performance gain on a number of benchmarks, including generic object recognition (ImageNet) and fine-grained object recognition tasks (CUB, Cars, Aircraft). We also show that this learning paradigm is highly generalizable to other tasks such as object detection and segmentation (MS COCO). Project page: //github.com/JDAI-CV/LIO.

Humans can quickly learn new visual concepts, perhaps because they can easily visualize or imagine what novel objects look like from different views. Incorporating this ability to hallucinate novel instances of new concepts might help machine vision systems perform better low-shot learning, i.e., learning concepts from few examples. We present a novel approach to low-shot learning that uses this idea. Our approach builds on recent progress in meta-learning ("learning to learn") by combining a meta-learner with a "hallucinator" that produces additional training examples, and optimizing both models jointly. Our hallucinator can be incorporated into a variety of meta-learners and provides significant gains: up to a 6 point boost in classification accuracy when only a single training example is available, yielding state-of-the-art performance on the challenging ImageNet low-shot classification benchmark.

Deep learning has yielded state-of-the-art performance on many natural language processing tasks including named entity recognition (NER). However, this typically requires large amounts of labeled data. In this work, we demonstrate that the amount of labeled training data can be drastically reduced when deep learning is combined with active learning. While active learning is sample-efficient, it can be computationally expensive since it requires iterative retraining. To speed this up, we introduce a lightweight architecture for NER, viz., the CNN-CNN-LSTM model consisting of convolutional character and word encoders and a long short term memory (LSTM) tag decoder. The model achieves nearly state-of-the-art performance on standard datasets for the task while being computationally much more efficient than best performing models. We carry out incremental active learning, during the training process, and are able to nearly match state-of-the-art performance with just 25\% of the original training data.
