This article focuses on the near-field effect in terahertz (THz) communications and sensing systems. By equipping with extremely large-scale antenna arrays (ELAAs), the near-field region in THz systems can be possibly extended to hundreds of meters in proximity to THz transceivers, which necessitates the consideration of near-field effect in the THz band both for the communications and sensing. We first review the main characteristics of the near-field region in the THz bands. The signal propagation in the near-field region is characterized by spherical waves rather than planar waves in the far-field region. This distinction introduces a new distance dimension to the communication and sensing channels, which brings new opportunities and challenges for both THz communications and sensing. More particularly, 1) For THz communications, the near-field effect enables a new mechanism for beamforming, namely, beamfocusing, in the focusing region. Furthermore, in THz multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the near-field effect can be exploited to combat the multiplexing gain degradation caused by the sparse THz channels. To address the near-field beam split effect caused by the conventional frequency-independent hybrid beamforming architecture in THz wideband communications, we propose a pair of wideband beamforming optimization approaches by a new hybrid beamforming architecture based on true-time-delayers (TTDs). 2) For THz sensing, joint angle and distance sensing can be achieved in the near-field region. Additionally, the near-field beam split becomes a beneficial effect for enhancing the sensing performance by focusing on multiple possible target locations rather than a drawback encountered in communications. Finally, several topics for future research are discussed.

We propose a location-adaptive self-normalization (SN) based test for change points in time series. The SN technique has been extensively used in change-point detection for its capability to avoid direct estimation of nuisance parameters. However, we find that the power of the SN-based test is susceptible to the location of the break and may suffer from a severe power loss, especially when the change occurs at the early or late stage of the sequence. This phenomenon is essentially caused by the unbalance of the data used before and after the change point when one is building a test statistic based on the cumulative sum (CUSUM) process. Hence, we consider leaving out the samples far away from the potential locations of change points and propose an optimal data selection scheme. Based on this scheme, a new SN-based test statistic adaptive to the locations of breaks is established. The new test can significantly improve the power of the existing SN-based tests while maintaining a satisfactory size. It is a unified treatment that can be readily extended to tests for general quantities of interest, such as the median and the model parameters. The derived optimal subsample selection strategy is not specific to the SN-based tests but is applicable to any method that relies on the CUSUM process, which may provide new insights in the area for future research.

We present a unified and compact scene representation for robotics, where each object in the scene is depicted by a latent code capturing geometry and appearance. This representation can be decoded for various tasks such as novel view rendering, 3D reconstruction (e.g. recovering depth, point clouds, or voxel maps), collision checking, and stable grasp prediction. We build our representation from a single RGB input image at test time by leveraging recent advances in Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) that learn category-level priors on large multiview datasets, then fine-tune on novel objects from one or few views. We expand the NeRF model for additional grasp outputs and explore ways to leverage this representation for robotics. At test-time, we build the representation from a single RGB input image observing the scene from only one viewpoint. We find that the recovered representation allows rendering from novel views, including of occluded object parts, and also for predicting successful stable grasps. Grasp poses can be directly decoded from our latent representation with an implicit grasp decoder. We experimented in both simulation and real world and demonstrated the capability for robust robotic grasping using such compact representation. Website: //nerfgrasp.github.io

In recent years, diffusion models have emerged as the most powerful approach in image synthesis. However, applying these models directly to video synthesis presents challenges, as it often leads to noticeable flickering contents. Although recently proposed zero-shot methods can alleviate flicker to some extent, we still struggle to generate coherent videos. In this paper, we propose DiffSynth, a novel approach that aims to convert image synthesis pipelines to video synthesis pipelines. DiffSynth consists of two key components: a latent in-iteration deflickering framework and a video deflickering algorithm. The latent in-iteration deflickering framework applies video deflickering to the latent space of diffusion models, effectively preventing flicker accumulation in intermediate steps. Additionally, we propose a video deflickering algorithm, named patch blending algorithm, that remaps objects in different frames and blends them together to enhance video consistency. One of the notable advantages of DiffSynth is its general applicability to various video synthesis tasks, including text-guided video stylization, fashion video synthesis, image-guided video stylization, video restoring, and 3D rendering. In the task of text-guided video stylization, we make it possible to synthesize high-quality videos without cherry-picking. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of DiffSynth. The design methodology of congestion control algorithms (CCAs) has shifted from control-based to measurement-based in recent years. However, we find that measurement-based CCAs, although having better performance, are not robust enough in fluctuating network environments, which are increasingly common nowadays. In this paper, we propose PAD to make measurement-based CCAs as robust as control-based CCAs in fluctuating environments while enjoying the performance benefits in general. PAD identifies that the root cause is that measurement-based CCAs blindly rely on measurement results, which unfortunately can be inaccurate, and will transiently mislead the CCAs to misbehave. The preliminary design of PAD works as a shim layer between the socket and CCAs so as to scale to any measurement-based CCAs, which turns out to outperform most commonly used CCAs in fluctuating environments.

Quantization has become a mainstream compression technique for reducing model size, computational requirements, and energy consumption for modern deep neural networks (DNNs). With the improved numerical support in recent hardware, including multiple variants of integer and floating point, mixed-precision quantization has become necessary to achieve high-quality results with low model cost. Prior mixed-precision quantization methods have performed a post-training quantization search, which compromises on accuracy, or a differentiable quantization search, which leads to high memory usage from branching. Therefore, we propose the first one-shot mixed-precision quantization search that eliminates the need for retraining in both integer and low-precision floating point models. We evaluate our floating-point and integer quantization search (FLIQS) on multiple convolutional networks and vision transformer models to discover Pareto-optimal models. Our approach discovers models that improve upon uniform precision, manual mixed-precision, and recent integer quantization search methods. With the proposed integer quantization search, we increase the accuracy of ResNet-18 on ImageNet by 1.31% points and ResNet-50 by 0.90% points with equivalent model cost over previous methods. Additionally, for the first time, we explore a novel mixed-precision floating-point search and improve MobileNetV2 by up to 0.98% points compared to prior state-of-the-art FP8 models. Finally, we extend FLIQS to simultaneously search a joint quantization and neural architecture space and improve the ImageNet accuracy by 2.69% points with similar model cost on a MobileNetV2 search space.

Despite the recent progress in deep learning, most approaches still go for a silo-like solution, focusing on learning each task in isolation: training a separate neural network for each individual task. Many real-world problems, however, call for a multi-modal approach and, therefore, for multi-tasking models. Multi-task learning (MTL) aims to leverage useful information across tasks to improve the generalization capability of a model. This thesis is concerned with multi-task learning in the context of computer vision. First, we review existing approaches for MTL. Next, we propose several methods that tackle important aspects of multi-task learning. The proposed methods are evaluated on various benchmarks. The results show several advances in the state-of-the-art of multi-task learning. Finally, we discuss several possibilities for future work.

With the rise of powerful pre-trained vision-language models like CLIP, it becomes essential to investigate ways to adapt these models to downstream datasets. A recently proposed method named Context Optimization (CoOp) introduces the concept of prompt learning -- a recent trend in NLP -- to the vision domain for adapting pre-trained vision-language models. Specifically, CoOp turns context words in a prompt into a set of learnable vectors and, with only a few labeled images for learning, can achieve huge improvements over intensively-tuned manual prompts. In our study we identify a critical problem of CoOp: the learned context is not generalizable to wider unseen classes within the same dataset, suggesting that CoOp overfits base classes observed during training. To address the problem, we propose Conditional Context Optimization (CoCoOp), which extends CoOp by further learning a lightweight neural network to generate for each image an input-conditional token (vector). Compared to CoOp's static prompts, our dynamic prompts adapt to each instance and are thus less sensitive to class shift. Extensive experiments show that CoCoOp generalizes much better than CoOp to unseen classes, even showing promising transferability beyond a single dataset; and yields stronger domain generalization performance as well. This paper aims to mitigate straggler effects in synchronous distributed learning for multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) problems. Stragglers arise frequently in a distributed learning system, due to the existence of various system disturbances such as slow-downs or failures of compute nodes and communication bottlenecks. To resolve this issue, we propose a coded distributed learning framework, which speeds up the training of MARL algorithms in the presence of stragglers, while maintaining the same accuracy as the centralized approach. As an illustration, a coded distributed version of the multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient(MADDPG) algorithm is developed and evaluated. Different coding schemes, including maximum distance separable (MDS)code, random sparse code, replication-based code, and regular low density parity check (LDPC) code are also investigated. Simulations in several multi-robot problems demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed framework.

Few-shot Knowledge Graph (KG) completion is a focus of current research, where each task aims at querying unseen facts of a relation given its few-shot reference entity pairs. Recent attempts solve this problem by learning static representations of entities and references, ignoring their dynamic properties, i.e., entities may exhibit diverse roles within task relations, and references may make different contributions to queries. This work proposes an adaptive attentional network for few-shot KG completion by learning adaptive entity and reference representations. Specifically, entities are modeled by an adaptive neighbor encoder to discern their task-oriented roles, while references are modeled by an adaptive query-aware aggregator to differentiate their contributions. Through the attention mechanism, both entities and references can capture their fine-grained semantic meanings, and thus render more expressive representations. This will be more predictive for knowledge acquisition in the few-shot scenario. Evaluation in link prediction on two public datasets shows that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results with different few-shot sizes.

Recently, neural networks have been widely used in e-commerce recommender systems, owing to the rapid development of deep learning. We formalize the recommender system as a sequential recommendation problem, intending to predict the next items that the user might be interacted with. Recent works usually give an overall embedding from a user's behavior sequence. However, a unified user embedding cannot reflect the user's multiple interests during a period. In this paper, we propose a novel controllable multi-interest framework for the sequential recommendation, called ComiRec. Our multi-interest module captures multiple interests from user behavior sequences, which can be exploited for retrieving candidate items from the large-scale item pool. These items are then fed into an aggregation module to obtain the overall recommendation. The aggregation module leverages a controllable factor to balance the recommendation accuracy and diversity. We conduct experiments for the sequential recommendation on two real-world datasets, Amazon and Taobao. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art models. Our framework has also been successfully deployed on the offline Alibaba distributed cloud platform.
