Visual perception is an important component for autonomous navigation of unmanned surface vessels (USV), particularly for the tasks related to autonomous inspection and tracking. These tasks involve vision-based navigation techniques to identify the target for navigation. Reduced visibility under extreme weather conditions in marine environments makes it difficult for vision-based approaches to work properly. To overcome these issues, this paper presents an autonomous vision-based navigation framework for tracking target objects in extreme marine conditions. The proposed framework consists of an integrated perception pipeline that uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) to remove noise and highlight the object features before passing them to the object detector (i.e., YOLOv5). The detected visual features are then used by the USV to track the target. The proposed framework has been thoroughly tested in simulation under extremely reduced visibility due to sandstorms and fog. The results are compared with state-of-the-art de-hazing methods across the benchmarked MBZIRC simulation dataset, on which the proposed scheme has outperformed the existing methods across various metrics.

This report examines the effectiveness of Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting in improving the multi-step reasoning abilities of large language models (LLMs). Inspired by previous studies \cite{Min2022RethinkingWork}, we analyze the impact of three types of CoT prompt perturbations, namely CoT order, CoT values, and CoT operators on the performance of GPT-3 on various tasks. Our findings show that incorrect CoT prompting leads to poor performance on accuracy metrics. Correct values in the CoT is crucial for predicting correct answers. Moreover, incorrect demonstrations, where the CoT operators or the CoT order are wrong, do not affect the performance as drastically when compared to the value based perturbations. This research deepens our understanding of CoT prompting and opens some new questions regarding the capability of LLMs to learn reasoning in context.

Overload situations, in the presence of resource limitations, in complex event processing (CEP) systems are typically handled using load shedding to maintain a given latency bound. However, load shedding might negatively impact the quality of results (QoR). To minimize the shedding impact on QoR, CEP researchers propose shedding approaches that drop events/internal state with the lowest importances/utilities. In both black-box and white-box shedding approaches, different features are used to predict these utilities. In this work, we propose a novel black-box shedding approach that uses a new set of features to drop events from the input event stream to maintain a given latency bound. Our approach uses a probabilistic model to predict these event utilities. Moreover, our approach uses Zobrist hashing and well-known machine learning models, e.g., decision trees and random forests, to handle the predicted event utilities. Through extensive evaluations on several synthetic and two real-world datasets and a representative set of CEP queries, we show that, in the majority of cases, our load shedding approach outperforms state-of-the-art black-box load shedding approaches, w.r.t. QoR.

Currently, low-resolution image recognition is confronted with a significant challenge in the field of intelligent traffic perception. Compared to high-resolution images, low-resolution images suffer from small size, low quality, and lack of detail, leading to a notable decrease in the accuracy of traditional neural network recognition algorithms. The key to low-resolution image recognition lies in effective feature extraction. Therefore, this paper delves into the fundamental dimensions of residual modules and their impact on feature extraction and computational efficiency. Based on experiments, we introduce a dual-branch residual network structure that leverages the basic architecture of residual networks and a common feature subspace algorithm. Additionally, it incorporates the utilization of intermediate-layer features to enhance the accuracy of low-resolution image recognition. Furthermore, we employ knowledge distillation to reduce network parameters and computational overhead. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of this algorithm for low-resolution image recognition in traffic environments.

Electric vehicles (EVs) play critical roles in autonomous mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems, but their unique charging patterns increase the model uncertainties in AMoD systems (e.g. state transition probability). Since there usually exists a mismatch between the training and test/true environments, incorporating model uncertainty into system design is of critical importance in real-world applications. However, model uncertainties have not been considered explicitly in EV AMoD system rebalancing by existing literature yet, and the coexistence of model uncertainties and constraints that the decision should satisfy makes the problem even more challenging. In this work, we design a robust and constrained multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework with state transition kernel uncertainty for EV AMoD systems. We then propose a robust and constrained MARL algorithm (ROCOMA) with robust natural policy gradients (RNPG) that trains a robust EV rebalancing policy to balance the supply-demand ratio and the charging utilization rate across the city under model uncertainty. Experiments show that the ROCOMA can learn an effective and robust rebalancing policy. It outperforms non-robust MARL methods in the presence of model uncertainties. It increases the system fairness by 19.6% and decreases the rebalancing costs by 75.8%.

Rational Identity Testing (RIT) is the decision problem of determining whether or not a given noncommutative rational formula computes zero in the free skew field. It admits a deterministic polynomial-time white-box algorithm [Garg et al., 2016; Ivanyos et. al., 2018; Hamada and Hirai, 2021], and a randomized polynomial-time black-box algorithm [Derksen and Makam, 2017] via singularity testing of linear matrices over the free skew field. Designing a subexponential-time deterministic RIT algorithm in black-box is a major open problem in this area. Despite being open for several years, this question has seen very limited progress. In fact, the only known result in this direction is the construction of a quasipolynomial-size hitting set for rational formulas of only inversion height two [Arvind et al., 2022]. In this paper, we settle this problem and obtain a deterministic quasipolynomial-time RIT algorithm for the general case in the black-box setting. Our algorithm uses ideas from the theory of finite dimensional division algebras, algebraic complexity theory, and the theory of generalized formal power series.

With the advent of advanced multi-sensor fusion models, there has been a notable enhancement in the performance of perception tasks within in terms of autonomous driving. Despite these advancements, the challenges persist, particularly in the fusion of data from cameras and LiDAR sensors. A critial concern is the accurate alignment of data from these disparate sensors. Our observations indicate that the projected positions of LiDAR points often misalign on the corresponding image. Furthermore, fusion models appear to struggle in accurately segmenting these misaligned points. In this paper, we would like to address this problem carefully, with a specific focus on the nuScenes dataset and the SOTA of fusion models 2DPASS, and providing the possible solutions or potential improvements.

Knowledge distillation (KD) is used to enhance automatic speaker verification performance by ensuring consistency between large teacher networks and lightweight student networks at the embedding level or label level. However, the conventional label-level KD overlooks the significant knowledge from non-target speakers, particularly their classification probabilities, which can be crucial for automatic speaker verification. In this paper, we first demonstrate that leveraging a larger number of training non-target speakers improves the performance of automatic speaker verification models. Inspired by this finding about the importance of non-target speakers' knowledge, we modified the conventional label-level KD by disentangling and emphasizing the classification probabilities of non-target speakers during knowledge distillation. The proposed method is applied to three different student model architectures and achieves an average of 13.67% improvement in EER on the VoxCeleb dataset compared to embedding-level and conventional label-level KD methods.

Understanding the intention of vehicles in the surrounding traffic is crucial for an autonomous vehicle to successfully accomplish its driving tasks in complex traffic scenarios such as highway forced merging. In this paper, we consider a behavioral model that incorporates both social behaviors and personal objectives of the interacting drivers. Leveraging this model, we develop a receding-horizon control-based decision-making strategy, that estimates online the other drivers' intentions using Bayesian filtering and incorporates predictions of nearby vehicles' behaviors under uncertain intentions. The effectiveness of the proposed decision-making strategy is demonstrated and evaluated based on simulation studies in comparison with a game theoretic controller and a real-world traffic dataset.

We describe ACE0, a lightweight platform for evaluating the suitability and viability of AI methods for behaviour discovery in multiagent simulations. Specifically, ACE0 was designed to explore AI methods for multi-agent simulations used in operations research studies related to new technologies such as autonomous aircraft. Simulation environments used in production are often high-fidelity, complex, require significant domain knowledge and as a result have high R&D costs. Minimal and lightweight simulation environments can help researchers and engineers evaluate the viability of new AI technologies for behaviour discovery in a more agile and potentially cost effective manner. In this paper we describe the motivation for the development of ACE0.We provide a technical overview of the system architecture, describe a case study of behaviour discovery in the aerospace domain, and provide a qualitative evaluation of the system. The evaluation includes a brief description of collaborative research projects with academic partners, exploring different AI behaviour discovery methods.

The problem of Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) consists in following the trajectory of different objects in a sequence, usually a video. In recent years, with the rise of Deep Learning, the algorithms that provide a solution to this problem have benefited from the representational power of deep models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on works that employ Deep Learning models to solve the task of MOT on single-camera videos. Four main steps in MOT algorithms are identified, and an in-depth review of how Deep Learning was employed in each one of these stages is presented. A complete experimental comparison of the presented works on the three MOTChallenge datasets is also provided, identifying a number of similarities among the top-performing methods and presenting some possible future research directions.
