Inspired by several delay-bounded mission-critical applications, this paper investigates chase-combining-based hybrid automatic repeat request (CC-HARQ) protocols to achieve high reliability in delay-constrained applications. A salient feature of our approach is to use the end-to-end delay constraint for computing the total number of ARQs permitted in the network, and then optimally distributing them across the nodes so as to minimize packet-drop-probability (PDP), which is the end-to-end reliability metric of interest. Since the chase-combining strategy combines the received packets across multiple attempts, we observe that the PDP of the network depends on the coherence-time of the intermediate wireless channels. As a result, we address the question of computing optimal allocation of ARQs for CC-HARQ strategies under both slow-fading and fast-fading scenarios. For both the channel conditions, we derive closed-form expressions for the PDP, and then formulate several optimization problems for minimizing the PDP for a given delay-bound. Using extensive theoretical results on the local minima of the optimization problems, we synthesize low-complexity algorithms to obtain near-optimal ARQ distributions. Besides using extensive simulation results to validate our findings, a detailed end-to-end delay analysis is also presented to show that the proposed CC-HARQ strategies outperform already known Type-1 ARQ based strategies in several scenarios.

We consider distributed average consensus in a wireless network with partial communication to reduce the number of transmissions in every iteration/round. Considering the broadcast nature of wireless channels, we propose a probabilistic approach that schedules a subset of nodes for broadcasting information to their neighbors in every round. We compare several heuristic methods for assigning the node broadcast probabilities under a fixed number of transmissions per round. Furthermore, we introduce a pre-compensation method to correct the bias between the consensus value and the average of the initial values, and suggest possible extensions for our design. Our results are particularly relevant for developing communication-efficient consensus protocols in a wireless environment with limited frequency/time resources.

In this paper, we study a distributed privacy-preserving learning problem in social networks with general topology. The agents can communicate with each other over the network, which may result in privacy disclosure, since the trustworthiness of the agents cannot be guaranteed. Given a set of options which yield unknown stochastic rewards, each agent is required to learn the best one, aiming at maximizing the resulting expected average cumulative reward. To serve the above goal, we propose a four-staged distributed algorithm which efficiently exploits the collaboration among the agents while preserving the local privacy for each of them. In particular, our algorithm proceeds iteratively, and in every round, each agent i) randomly perturbs its adoption for the privacy-preserving purpose, ii) disseminates the perturbed adoption over the social network in a nearly uniform manner through random walking, iii) selects an option by referring to the perturbed suggestions received from its peers, and iv) decides whether or not to adopt the selected option as preference according to its latest reward feedback. Through solid theoretical analysis, we quantify the trade-off among the number of agents (or communication overhead), privacy preserving and learning utility. We also perform extensive simulations to verify the efficacy of our proposed social learning algorithm.

Visualization plays a vital role in making sense of complex network data. Recent studies have shown the potential of using extended reality (XR) for the immersive exploration of networks. The additional depth cues offered by XR help users perform better in certain tasks when compared to using traditional desktop setups. However, prior works on immersive network visualization rely on mostly static graph layouts to present the data to the user. This poses a problem since there is no optimal layout for all possible tasks. The choice of layout heavily depends on the type of network and the task at hand. We introduce a multi-layout approach that allows users to effectively explore hierarchical network data in immersive space. The resulting system leverages different layout techniques and interactions to efficiently use the available space in VR and provide an optimal view of the data depending on the task and the level of detail required to solve it. To evaluate our approach, we have conducted a user study comparing it against the state of the art for immersive network visualization. Participants performed tasks at varying spatial scopes. The results show that our approach outperforms the baseline in spatially focused scenarios as well as when the whole network needs to be considered.

We study the set of optimal solutions of the dual linear programming formulation of the linear assignment problem (LAP) to propose a method for computing a solution from the relative interior of this set. Assuming that an arbitrary dual-optimal solution and an optimal assignment are available (for which many efficient algorithms already exist), our method computes a relative-interior solution in linear time. Since LAP occurs as a subproblem in the linear programming relaxation of quadratic assignment problem (QAP), we employ our method as a new component in the family of dual-ascent algorithms that provide bounds on the optimal value of QAP. To make our results applicable to incomplete QAP, which is of interest in practical use-cases, we also provide a linear-time reduction from incomplete LAP to complete LAP along with a mapping that preserves optimality and membership in the relative interior. Our experiments on publicly available benchmarks indicate that our approach with relative-interior solution is frequently capable of providing superior bounds and otherwise is at least comparable.

In this work we propose a batch Bayesian optimization method for combinatorial problems on permutations, which is well suited for expensive-to-evaluate objectives. We first introduce LAW, an efficient batch acquisition method based on determinantal point processes using the acquisition weighted kernel. Relying on multiple parallel evaluations, LAW enables accelerated search on combinatorial spaces. We then apply the framework to permutation problems, which have so far received little attention in the Bayesian Optimization literature, despite their practical importance. We call this method LAW2ORDER. On the theoretical front, we prove that LAW2ORDER has vanishing simple regret by showing that the batch cumulative regret is sublinear. Empirically, we assess the method on several standard combinatorial problems involving permutations such as quadratic assignment, flowshop scheduling and the traveling salesman, as well as on a structure learning task.

The solution of linear inverse problems arising, for example, in signal and image processing is a challenging problem since the ill-conditioning amplifies the noise on the data. Recently introduced algorithms based on deep learning overwhelm the more traditional model-based approaches, but they typically suffer from instability with respect to data perturbation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the trade-off between neural networks stability and accuracy in the solution of linear inverse problems. Moreover, we propose different supervised and unsupervised solutions to increase network stability that maintains good accuracy by inheriting, in the network training, regularization from a model-based iterative scheme. Extensive numerical experiments on image deblurring confirm the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the proposed deep learning-based solutions to stably solve noisy inverse problems.

Convergence (virtual) bidding is an important part of two-settlement electric power markets as it can effectively reduce discrepancies between the day-ahead and real-time markets. Consequently, there is extensive research into the bidding strategies of virtual participants aiming to obtain optimal bids to submit to the day-ahead market. In this paper, we introduce a price-based general stochastic optimization framework to obtain optimal convergence bid curves. Within this framework, we develop a computationally tractable linear programming-based optimization model, which produces bid prices and volumes simultaneously. We also show that different approximations and simplifications in the general model lead naturally to state-of-the-art convergence bidding approaches, such as self-scheduling and opportunistic approaches. Our general framework also provides a straightforward way to compare the performance of these models, which is demonstrated by numerical experiments on the California (CAISO) market.

The growing energy and performance costs of deep learning have driven the community to reduce the size of neural networks by selectively pruning components. Similarly to their biological counterparts, sparse networks generalize just as well, if not better than, the original dense networks. Sparsity can reduce the memory footprint of regular networks to fit mobile devices, as well as shorten training time for ever growing networks. In this paper, we survey prior work on sparsity in deep learning and provide an extensive tutorial of sparsification for both inference and training. We describe approaches to remove and add elements of neural networks, different training strategies to achieve model sparsity, and mechanisms to exploit sparsity in practice. Our work distills ideas from more than 300 research papers and provides guidance to practitioners who wish to utilize sparsity today, as well as to researchers whose goal is to push the frontier forward. We include the necessary background on mathematical methods in sparsification, describe phenomena such as early structure adaptation, the intricate relations between sparsity and the training process, and show techniques for achieving acceleration on real hardware. We also define a metric of pruned parameter efficiency that could serve as a baseline for comparison of different sparse networks. We close by speculating on how sparsity can improve future workloads and outline major open problems in the field.

With the rapid increase of large-scale, real-world datasets, it becomes critical to address the problem of long-tailed data distribution (i.e., a few classes account for most of the data, while most classes are under-represented). Existing solutions typically adopt class re-balancing strategies such as re-sampling and re-weighting based on the number of observations for each class. In this work, we argue that as the number of samples increases, the additional benefit of a newly added data point will diminish. We introduce a novel theoretical framework to measure data overlap by associating with each sample a small neighboring region rather than a single point. The effective number of samples is defined as the volume of samples and can be calculated by a simple formula $(1-\beta^{n})/(1-\beta)$, where $n$ is the number of samples and $\beta \in [0,1)$ is a hyperparameter. We design a re-weighting scheme that uses the effective number of samples for each class to re-balance the loss, thereby yielding a class-balanced loss. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on artificially induced long-tailed CIFAR datasets and large-scale datasets including ImageNet and iNaturalist. Our results show that when trained with the proposed class-balanced loss, the network is able to achieve significant performance gains on long-tailed datasets.

Aspect based sentiment analysis (ABSA) can provide more detailed information than general sentiment analysis, because it aims to predict the sentiment polarities of the given aspects or entities in text. We summarize previous approaches into two subtasks: aspect-category sentiment analysis (ACSA) and aspect-term sentiment analysis (ATSA). Most previous approaches employ long short-term memory and attention mechanisms to predict the sentiment polarity of the concerned targets, which are often complicated and need more training time. We propose a model based on convolutional neural networks and gating mechanisms, which is more accurate and efficient. First, the novel Gated Tanh-ReLU Units can selectively output the sentiment features according to the given aspect or entity. The architecture is much simpler than attention layer used in the existing models. Second, the computations of our model could be easily parallelized during training, because convolutional layers do not have time dependency as in LSTM layers, and gating units also work independently. The experiments on SemEval datasets demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our models.
