Virtual Reality (VR) technology is being advanced along the lines of enhancing its immersiveness, enabling multiuser Virtual Experiences (VEs), and supporting unconstrained mobility of the users in their VEs, while constraining them within specialized VR setups through Redirected Walking (RDW). For meeting the extreme data-rate and latency requirements of future VR systems, supporting wireless networking infrastructures will operate in millimeter Wave (mmWave) frequencies and leverage highly directional communication in both transmission and reception through beamforming and beamsteering. We propose to leverage predictive context-awareness for optimizing transmitter and receiver-side beamforming and beamsteering. In particular, we argue that short-term prediction of users' lateral movements in multiuser VR setups with RDW can be utilized for optimizing transmitter-side beamforming and beamsteering through Line-of-Sight (LoS) "tracking" in the users' directions. At the same time, short-term prediction of orientational movements can be used for receiver-side beamforming for coverage flexibility enhancements. We target two open problems in predicting these two context information instances: i) lateral movement prediction in multiuser VR settings with RDW and ii) generation of synthetic head rotation datasets to be utilized in the training of existing orientational movements predictors. We follow by experimentally showing that Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks feature promising accuracy in predicting lateral movements, as well as that context-awareness stemming from VEs further benefits this accuracy. Second, we show that a TimeGAN-based approach for orientational data generation can generate synthetic samples closely matching the experimentally obtained ones.
The recent success of large language models (LLMs) has shown great potential to develop more powerful conversational recommender systems (CRSs), which rely on natural language conversations to satisfy user needs. In this paper, we embark on an investigation into the utilization of ChatGPT for conversational recommendation, revealing the inadequacy of the existing evaluation protocol. It might over-emphasize the matching with the ground-truth items or utterances generated by human annotators, while neglecting the interactive nature of being a capable CRS. To overcome the limitation, we further propose an interactive Evaluation approach based on LLMs named iEvaLM that harnesses LLM-based user simulators. Our evaluation approach can simulate various interaction scenarios between users and systems. Through the experiments on two publicly available CRS datasets, we demonstrate notable improvements compared to the prevailing evaluation protocol. Furthermore, we emphasize the evaluation of explainability, and ChatGPT showcases persuasive explanation generation for its recommendations. Our study contributes to a deeper comprehension of the untapped potential of LLMs for CRSs and provides a more flexible and easy-to-use evaluation framework for future research endeavors. Multi-agent systems can be extremely efficient when working concurrently and collaboratively, e.g., for transportation, maintenance, search and rescue. Coordination of such teams often involves two aspects: (i) selecting appropriate sub-teams for different tasks; (ii) designing collaborative control strategies to execute these tasks. The former aspect can be combinatorial w.r.t. the team size, while the latter requires optimization over joint state-spaces under geometric and dynamic constraints. Existing work often tackles one aspect by assuming the other is given, while ignoring their close dependency. This work formulates such problems as combinatorial-hybrid optimizations (CHO), where both the discrete modes of collaboration and the continuous control parameters are optimized simultaneously and iteratively. The proposed framework consists of two interleaved layers: the dynamic formation of task coalitions and the hybrid optimization of collaborative behaviors. Overall feasibility and costs of different coalitions performing various tasks are approximated at different granularities to improve the computational efficiency. At last, a Nash-stable strategy for both task assignment and execution is derived with provable guarantee on the feasibility and quality. Two non-trivial applications of collaborative transportation and dynamic capture are studied against several baselines.
Information retrieval (IR) plays a crucial role in locating relevant resources from vast amounts of data, and its applications have evolved from traditional knowledge bases to modern search engines (SEs). The emergence of large language models (LLMs) has further revolutionized the IR field by enabling users to interact with search systems in natural language. In this paper, we explore the advantages and disadvantages of LLMs and SEs, highlighting their respective strengths in understanding user-issued queries and retrieving up-to-date information. To leverage the benefits of both paradigms while circumventing their limitations, we propose InteR, a novel framework that facilitates knowledge refinement through interaction between SEs and LLMs. InteR allows SEs to expand knowledge in queries using LLM-generated knowledge collections and enables LLMs to enhance prompt formulation using SE-retrieved documents. This iterative refinement process augments the inputs of SEs and LLMs, leading to more accurate retrieval. Experiments on large-scale retrieval benchmarks involving web search and low-resource retrieval tasks demonstrate that InteR achieves overall superior zero-shot retrieval performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, even those using relevance judgment. The iterated learning model is an agent-based model of language evolution notable for demonstrating the emergence of compositional language. In its original form, it modelled language evolution along a single chain of teacher-pupil interactions; here we modify the model to allow more complex patterns of communication within a population and use the extended model to quantify the effect of within-community and between-community communication frequency on language development. We find that a small amount of between-community communication can lead to population-wide language convergence but that this global language amalgamation is more difficult to achieve when communities are spatially embedded.
Processing-in-memory (PIM) promises to alleviate the data movement bottleneck in modern computing systems. However, current real-world PIM systems have the inherent disadvantage that their hardware is more constrained than in conventional processors (CPU, GPU), due to the difficulty and cost of building processing elements near or inside the memory. As a result, general-purpose PIM architectures support fairly limited instruction sets and struggle to execute complex operations such as transcendental functions and other hard-to-calculate operations (e.g., square root). These operations are particularly important for some modern workloads, e.g., activation functions in machine learning applications. In order to provide support for transcendental (and other hard-to-calculate) functions in general-purpose PIM systems, we present \emph{TransPimLib}, a library that provides CORDIC-based and LUT-based methods for trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, exponentiation, logarithm, square root, etc. We develop an implementation of TransPimLib for the UPMEM PIM architecture and perform a thorough evaluation of TransPimLib's methods in terms of performance and accuracy, using microbenchmarks and three full workloads (Blackscholes, Sigmoid, Softmax). Understanding the dynamics of complex molecular processes is often linked to the study of infrequent transitions between long-lived stable states. The standard approach to the sampling of such rare events is to generate an ensemble of transition paths using a random walk in trajectory space. This, however, comes with the drawback of strong correlations between subsequently sampled paths and with an intrinsic difficulty in parallelizing the sampling process. We propose a transition path sampling scheme based on neural-network generated configurations. These are obtained employing normalizing flows, a neural network class able to generate statistically independent samples from a given distribution. With this approach, not only are correlations between visited paths removed, but the sampling process becomes easily parallelizable. Moreover, by conditioning the normalizing flow, the sampling of configurations can be steered towards regions of interest. We show that this approach enables the resolution of both the thermodynamics and kinetics of the transition region.
We discuss the adequacy of tests for intelligent systems and practical problems raised by their implementation. We propose the replacement test as the ability of a system to replace successfully another system performing a task in a given context. We show how it can characterize salient aspects of human intelligence that cannot be taken into account by the Turing test. We argue that building intelligent systems passing the replacement test involves a series of technical problems that are outside the scope of current AI. We present a framework for implementing the proposed test and validating the properties of the intelligent systems. We discuss the inherent limitations of intelligent system validation and advocate new theoretical foundations for extending existing rigorous test methods. We suggest that the replacement test, based on the complementarity of skills between human and machine, can lead to a multitude of intelligence concepts reflecting the ability to combine data-based and symbolic knowledge to varying degrees.
The adoption of virtual reality (VR) technologies has rapidly gained momentum in recent years as companies around the world begin to position the so-called "metaverse" as the next major medium for accessing and interacting with the internet. While consumers have become accustomed to a degree of data harvesting on the web, the real-time nature of data sharing in the metaverse indicates that privacy concerns are likely to be even more prevalent in the new "Web 3.0." Research into VR privacy has demonstrated that a plethora of sensitive personal information is observable by various would-be adversaries from just a few minutes of telemetry data. On the other hand, we have yet to see VR parallels for many privacy-preserving tools aimed at mitigating threats on conventional platforms. This paper aims to systematize knowledge on the landscape of VR privacy threats and countermeasures by proposing a comprehensive taxonomy of data attributes, protections, and adversaries based on the study of 68 collected publications. We complement our qualitative discussion with a statistical analysis of the risk associated with various data sources inherent to VR in consideration of the known attacks and defenses. By focusing on highlighting the clear outstanding opportunities, we hope to motivate and guide further research into this increasingly important field.
Along with the massive growth of the Internet from the 1990s until now, various innovative technologies have been created to bring users breathtaking experiences with more virtual interactions in cyberspace. Many virtual environments with thousands of services and applications, from social networks to virtual gaming worlds, have been developed with immersive experience and digital transformation, but most are incoherent instead of being integrated into a platform. In this context, metaverse, a term formed by combining meta and universe, has been introduced as a shared virtual world that is fueled by many emerging technologies, such as fifth-generation networks and beyond, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence (AI). Among such technologies, AI has shown the great importance of processing big data to enhance immersive experience and enable human-like intelligence of virtual agents. In this survey, we make a beneficial effort to explore the role of AI in the foundation and development of the metaverse. We first deliver a preliminary of AI, including machine learning algorithms and deep learning architectures, and its role in the metaverse. We then convey a comprehensive investigation of AI-based methods concerning six technical aspects that have potentials for the metaverse: natural language processing, machine vision, blockchain, networking, digital twin, and neural interface, and being potential for the metaverse. Subsequently, several AI-aided applications, such as healthcare, manufacturing, smart cities, and gaming, are studied to be deployed in the virtual worlds. Finally, we conclude the key contribution of this survey and open some future research directions in AI for the metaverse.
Recent advance in fluorescence microscopy enables acquisition of 3D image volumes with better quality and deeper penetration into tissue. Segmentation is a required step to characterize and analyze biological structures in the images. 3D segmentation using deep learning has achieved promising results in microscopy images. One issue is that deep learning techniques require a large set of groundtruth data which is impractical to annotate manually for microscopy volumes. This paper describes a 3D nuclei segmentation method using 3D convolutional neural networks. A set of synthetic volumes and the corresponding groundtruth volumes are generated automatically using a generative adversarial network. Segmentation results demonstrate that our proposed method is capable of segmenting nuclei successfully in 3D for various data sets.
