This paper describes a purely functional library for computing level-$p$-complexity of Boolean functions, and applies it to two-level iterated majority. Boolean functions are simply functions from $n$ bits to one bit, and they can describe digital circuits, voting systems, etc. An example of a Boolean function is majority, which returns the value that has majority among the $n$ input bits for odd $n$. The complexity of a Boolean function $f$ measures the cost of evaluating it: how many bits of the input are needed to be certain about the result of $f$. There are many competing complexity measures but we focus on level-$p$-complexity -- a function of the probability $p$ that a bit is 1. The level-$p$-complexity $D_p(f)$ is the minimum expected cost when the input bits are independent and identically distributed with Bernoulli($p$) distribution. We specify the problem as choosing the minimum expected cost of all possible decision trees -- which directly translates to a clearly correct, but very inefficient implementation. The library uses thinning and memoization for efficiency and type classes for separation of concerns. The complexity is represented using (sets of) polynomials, and the order relation used for thinning is implemented using polynomial factorisation and root-counting. Finally we compute the complexity for two-level iterated majority and improve on an earlier result by J.~Jansson.

This article discusses the employment of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks. First, two fundamental configurations of STARS-enabled ISAC systems are introduced, namely integrated full-space configuration and separated half-space configuration, as well as their respective advantages and common challenges are identified. To address the aforementioned challenges, a novel sensing-at-STARS design is proposed, where the sensing functionality is achieved at the STARS instead of at the base station. Such a design significantly improves the echo signal energy by eliminating undesired echo energy attenuation/leakage, in addition to establishing favorable echo propagation paths to facilitate sensing information extraction. We also present three practical implementations for sensing-at-STARS, including separated elements, mode-selection elements, and power-splitting elements. Each implementation enables flexible sensing-communication tradeoffs. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed STARS-enabled ISAC design. Finally, we discuss several future research directions.

We present a first large-scale public synthetic dataset for contextual spellchecking customization of automatic speech recognition (ASR) with focus on diverse rare and out-of-vocabulary (OOV) phrases, such as proper names or terms. The proposed approach allows creating millions of realistic examples of corrupted ASR hypotheses and simulate non-trivial biasing lists for the customization task. Furthermore, we propose injecting two types of ``hard negatives" to the simulated biasing lists in training examples and describe our procedures to automatically mine them. We report experiments with training an open-source customization model on the proposed dataset and show that the injection of hard negative biasing phrases decreases WER and the number of false alarms.

Generalization to out-of-distribution (OOD) data is a critical challenge in machine learning. Ensemble-based methods, like weight space ensembles that interpolate model parameters, have been shown to achieve superior OOD performance. However, the underlying mechanism for their effectiveness remains unclear. In this study, we closely examine WiSE-FT, a popular weight space ensemble method that interpolates between a pre-trained and a fine-tuned model. We observe an unexpected phenomenon, in which WiSE-FT successfully corrects many cases where each individual model makes incorrect predictions, which contributes significantly to its OOD effectiveness. To gain further insights, we conduct theoretical analysis in a multi-class setting with a large number of spurious features. Our analysis predicts the above phenomenon and it further shows that ensemble-based models reduce prediction errors in the OOD settings by utilizing a more diverse set of spurious features. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that focuses on learning invariant features for better OOD performance, our findings suggest that incorporating a large number of diverse spurious features weakens their individual contributions, leading to improved overall OOD generalization performance. Empirically we demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing diverse spurious features on a MultiColorMNIST dataset, and our experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. Building upon the new theoretical insights into the efficacy of ensemble methods, we further identify an issue of WiSE-FT caused by the overconfidence of fine-tuned models in OOD situations. This overconfidence magnifies the fine-tuned model's incorrect prediction, leading to deteriorated OOD ensemble performance. To remedy this problem, we propose a novel method called BAlaNced averaGing (BANG), which significantly enhances the OOD performance of WiSE-FT.

We introduce MORPH, a method for co-optimization of hardware design parameters and control policies in simulation using reinforcement learning. Like most co-optimization methods, MORPH relies on a model of the hardware being optimized, usually simulated based on the laws of physics. However, such a model is often difficult to integrate into an effective optimization routine. To address this, we introduce a proxy hardware model, which is always differentiable and enables efficient co-optimization alongside a long-horizon control policy using RL. MORPH is designed to ensure that the optimized hardware proxy remains as close as possible to its realistic counterpart, while still enabling task completion. We demonstrate our approach on simulated 2D reaching and 3D multi-fingered manipulation tasks.

We study functional and concurrent calculi with non-determinism, along with type systems to control resources based on linearity. The interplay between non-determinism and linearity is delicate: careless handling of branches can discard resources meant to be used exactly once. Here we go beyond prior work by considering non-determinism in its standard sense: once a branch is selected, the rest are discarded. Our technical contributions are three-fold. First, we introduce a $\pi$-calculus with non-deterministic choice, governed by session types. Second, we introduce a resource $\lambda$-calculus, governed by intersection types, in which non-determinism concerns fetching of resources from bags. Finally, we connect our two typed non-deterministic calculi via a correct translation.

We introduce RotateIt, a system that enables fingertip-based object rotation along multiple axes by leveraging multimodal sensory inputs. Our system is trained in simulation, where it has access to ground-truth object shapes and physical properties. Then we distill it to operate on realistic yet noisy simulated visuotactile and proprioceptive sensory inputs. These multimodal inputs are fused via a visuotactile transformer, enabling online inference of object shapes and physical properties during deployment. We show significant performance improvements over prior methods and the importance of visual and tactile sensing.

This paper provides a finite-sample analysis of a passive stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics algorithm (PSGLD) designed to achieve adaptive inverse reinforcement learning (IRL). By passive, we mean that the noisy gradients available to the PSGLD algorithm (inverse learning process) are evaluated at randomly chosen points by an external stochastic gradient algorithm (forward learner) that aims to optimize a cost function. The PSGLD algorithm acts as a randomized sampler to achieve adaptive IRL by reconstructing this cost function nonparametrically from the stationary measure of a Langevin diffusion. Previous work has analyzed the asymptotic performance of this passive algorithm using weak convergence techniques. This paper analyzes the non-asymptotic (finite-sample) performance using a logarithmic-Sobolev inequality and the Otto-Villani Theorem. We obtain finite-sample bounds on the 2-Wasserstein distance between the estimates generated by the PSGLD algorithm and the cost function. Apart from achieving finite-sample guarantees for adaptive IRL, this work extends a line of research in analysis of passive stochastic gradient algorithms to the finite-sample regime for Langevin dynamics.

Meta-reinforcement learning algorithms can enable robots to acquire new skills much more quickly, by leveraging prior experience to learn how to learn. However, much of the current research on meta-reinforcement learning focuses on task distributions that are very narrow. For example, a commonly used meta-reinforcement learning benchmark uses different running velocities for a simulated robot as different tasks. When policies are meta-trained on such narrow task distributions, they cannot possibly generalize to more quickly acquire entirely new tasks. Therefore, if the aim of these methods is to enable faster acquisition of entirely new behaviors, we must evaluate them on task distributions that are sufficiently broad to enable generalization to new behaviors. In this paper, we propose an open-source simulated benchmark for meta-reinforcement learning and multi-task learning consisting of 50 distinct robotic manipulation tasks. Our aim is to make it possible to develop algorithms that generalize to accelerate the acquisition of entirely new, held-out tasks. We evaluate 6 state-of-the-art meta-reinforcement learning and multi-task learning algorithms on these tasks. Surprisingly, while each task and its variations (e.g., with different object positions) can be learned with reasonable success, these algorithms struggle to learn with multiple tasks at the same time, even with as few as ten distinct training tasks. Our analysis and open-source environments pave the way for future research in multi-task learning and meta-learning that can enable meaningful generalization, thereby unlocking the full potential of these methods.

We introduce a multi-task setup of identifying and classifying entities, relations, and coreference clusters in scientific articles. We create SciERC, a dataset that includes annotations for all three tasks and develop a unified framework called Scientific Information Extractor (SciIE) for with shared span representations. The multi-task setup reduces cascading errors between tasks and leverages cross-sentence relations through coreference links. Experiments show that our multi-task model outperforms previous models in scientific information extraction without using any domain-specific features. We further show that the framework supports construction of a scientific knowledge graph, which we use to analyze information in scientific literature.

Most existing works in visual question answering (VQA) are dedicated to improving the accuracy of predicted answers, while disregarding the explanations. We argue that the explanation for an answer is of the same or even more importance compared with the answer itself, since it makes the question and answering process more understandable and traceable. To this end, we propose a new task of VQA-E (VQA with Explanation), where the computational models are required to generate an explanation with the predicted answer. We first construct a new dataset, and then frame the VQA-E problem in a multi-task learning architecture. Our VQA-E dataset is automatically derived from the VQA v2 dataset by intelligently exploiting the available captions. We have conducted a user study to validate the quality of explanations synthesized by our method. We quantitatively show that the additional supervision from explanations can not only produce insightful textual sentences to justify the answers, but also improve the performance of answer prediction. Our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a clear margin on the VQA v2 dataset.
