Despite the significant advancements in keyphrase extraction and keyphrase generation methods, the predominant approach for evaluation only relies on exact matching with human references and disregards reference-free attributes. This scheme fails to recognize systems that generate keyphrases semantically equivalent to the references or diverse keyphrases that carry practical utility. To better assess the capability of keyphrase systems, we propose KPEval, a comprehensive evaluation framework consisting of four critical dimensions: saliency, faithfulness, diversity, and utility. For each dimension, we design semantic-based metrics that align with the evaluation objectives. Meta-evaluation studies demonstrate that our evaluation strategy correlates better with human preferences compared to a range of previously used metrics. Using this framework, we re-evaluate 20 keyphrase systems and further discover that (1) the best model differs depending on the evaluation dimension; (2) the utility in downstream tasks does not always correlate with reference-based metrics; and (3) large language models like GPT-3.5 exhibit a strong performance under reference-free evaluation.

This paper describes PyOED, a highly extensible scientific package that enables developing and testing model-constrained optimal experimental design (OED) for inverse problems. Specifically, PyOED aims to be a comprehensive Python toolkit for model-constrained OED. The package targets scientists and researchers interested in understanding the details of OED formulations and approaches. It is also meant to enable researchers to experiment with standard and innovative OED technologies with a wide range of test problems (e.g., simulation models). OED, inverse problems (e.g., Bayesian inversion), and data assimilation (DA) are closely related research fields, and their formulations overlap significantly. Thus, PyOED is continuously being expanded with a plethora of Bayesian inversion, DA, and OED methods as well as new scientific simulation models, observation error models, and observation operators. These pieces are added such that they can be permuted to enable testing OED methods in various settings of varying complexities. The PyOED core is completely written in Python and utilizes the inherent object-oriented capabilities; however, the current version of PyOED is meant to be extensible rather than scalable. Specifically, PyOED is developed to enable rapid development and benchmarking of OED methods with minimal coding effort and to maximize code reutilization. This paper provides a brief description of the PyOED layout and philosophy and provides a set of exemplary test cases and tutorials to demonstrate the potential of the package.

Agent-based modeling and simulation has evolved as a powerful tool for modeling complex systems, offering insights into emergent behaviors and interactions among diverse agents. Integrating large language models into agent-based modeling and simulation presents a promising avenue for enhancing simulation capabilities. This paper surveys the landscape of utilizing large language models in agent-based modeling and simulation, examining their challenges and promising future directions. In this survey, since this is an interdisciplinary field, we first introduce the background of agent-based modeling and simulation and large language model-empowered agents. We then discuss the motivation for applying large language models to agent-based simulation and systematically analyze the challenges in environment perception, human alignment, action generation, and evaluation. Most importantly, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent works of large language model-empowered agent-based modeling and simulation in multiple scenarios, which can be divided into four domains: cyber, physical, social, and hybrid, covering simulation of both real-world and virtual environments. Finally, since this area is new and quickly evolving, we discuss the open problems and promising future directions.

With the prevalence of pre-training-fine-tuning paradigm, how to efficiently adapt the pre-trained model to the downstream tasks has been an intriguing issue. Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) methods have been proposed for low-cost adaptation, including Adapters, Bia-only, and the recently widely used Low-Rank Adaptation. Although these methods have demonstrated their effectiveness to some extent and have been widely applied, the underlying principles are still unclear. In this paper, we reveal the transition of loss landscape in the downstream domain from random initialization to pre-trained initialization, that is, from low-amplitude oscillation to high-amplitude oscillation. The parameter gradients exhibit a property akin to sparsity, where a small fraction of components dominate the total gradient norm, for instance, 1% of the components account for 99% of the gradient. This property ensures that the pre-trained model can easily find a flat minimizer which guarantees the model's ability to generalize even with a low number of trainable parameters. Based on this, we propose a gradient-based sparse fine-tuning algorithm, named Sparse Increment Fine-Tuning (SIFT), and validate its effectiveness on a range of tasks including the GLUE Benchmark and Instruction-tuning. We introduce novel methods for state estimation, feedforward and feedback control, which specifically target humanoid robots with hardware limitations. Our method combines a five-mass model with approximate dynamics of each mass. It enables acquiring an accurate assessment of the centroidal state and Center of Pressure, even when direct forms of force or contact sensing are unavailable. Upon this, we develop a feedforward scheme that operates on the centroidal state, accounting for insufficient joint tracking capabilities. Finally, we implement feedback mechanisms, which compensate for the lack in Degrees of Freedom that our NimbRo-OP2X robot has. The whole approach allows for reactive stepping to maintain balance despite these limitations, which was verified on hardware during RoboCup 2023, in Bordeaux, France.

While new and effective methods for anomaly detection are frequently introduced, many studies prioritize the detection task without considering the need for explainability. Yet, in real-world applications, anomaly explanation, which aims to provide explanation of why specific data instances are identified as anomalies, is an equally important task. In this work, we present a novel approach for efficient and accurate model-agnostic anomaly explanation for tabular data using Predicate-based Association Rules (PARs). PARs can provide intuitive explanations not only about which features of the anomaly instance are abnormal, but also the reasons behind their abnormality. Our user study indicates that the anomaly explanation form of PARs is better comprehended and preferred by regular users of anomaly detection systems as compared to existing model-agnostic explanation options. Furthermore, we conduct extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets, demonstrating that PARs compare favorably to state-of-the-art model-agnostic methods in terms of computing efficiency and explanation accuracy on anomaly explanation tasks. The advent of artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of information technology. With AIGC, it can be effortless to generate high-quality data that is challenging for the public to distinguish. Nevertheless, the proliferation of generative data across cyberspace brings security and privacy issues, including privacy leakages of individuals and media forgery for fraudulent purposes. Consequently, both academia and industry begin to emphasize the trustworthiness of generative data, successively providing a series of countermeasures for security and privacy. In this survey, we systematically review the security and privacy on generative data in AIGC, particularly for the first time analyzing them from the perspective of information security properties. Specifically, we reveal the successful experiences of state-of-the-art countermeasures in terms of the foundational properties of privacy, controllability, authenticity, and compliance, respectively. Finally, we summarize the open challenges and potential exploration directions from each of theses properties.

An acoustic model, trained on a significant amount of unlabeled data, consists of a self-supervised learned speech representation useful for solving downstream tasks, perhaps after a fine-tuning of the model in the respective downstream task. In this work, we build an acoustic model of Brazilian Portuguese Speech through a Transformer neural network. This model was pretrained on more than $800$ hours of Brazilian Portuguese Speech, using a combination of pretraining techniques. Using a labeled dataset collected for the detection of respiratory insufficiency in Brazilian Portuguese speakers, we fine-tune the pretrained Transformer neural network on the following tasks: respiratory insufficiency detection, gender recognition and age group classification. We compare the performance of pretrained Transformers on these tasks with that of Transformers without previous pretraining, noting a significant improvement. In particular, the performance of respiratory insufficiency detection obtains the best reported results so far, indicating this kind of acoustic model as a promising tool for speech-as-biomarker approach. Moreover, the performance of gender recognition is comparable to the state of the art models in English.

Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) which are trained on large text corpus via self-supervised learning method, have yielded promising performance on various tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, though PLMs with huge parameters can effectively possess rich knowledge learned from massive training text and benefit downstream tasks at the fine-tuning stage, they still have some limitations such as poor reasoning ability due to the lack of external knowledge. Research has been dedicated to incorporating knowledge into PLMs to tackle these issues. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of Knowledge-Enhanced Pre-trained Language Models (KE-PLMs) to provide a clear insight into this thriving field. We introduce appropriate taxonomies respectively for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG) to highlight these two main tasks of NLP. For NLU, we divide the types of knowledge into four categories: linguistic knowledge, text knowledge, knowledge graph (KG), and rule knowledge. The KE-PLMs for NLG are categorized into KG-based and retrieval-based methods. Finally, we point out some promising future directions of KE-PLMs.

The recent proliferation of knowledge graphs (KGs) coupled with incomplete or partial information, in the form of missing relations (links) between entities, has fueled a lot of research on knowledge base completion (also known as relation prediction). Several recent works suggest that convolutional neural network (CNN) based models generate richer and more expressive feature embeddings and hence also perform well on relation prediction. However, we observe that these KG embeddings treat triples independently and thus fail to cover the complex and hidden information that is inherently implicit in the local neighborhood surrounding a triple. To this effect, our paper proposes a novel attention based feature embedding that captures both entity and relation features in any given entity's neighborhood. Additionally, we also encapsulate relation clusters and multihop relations in our model. Our empirical study offers insights into the efficacy of our attention based model and we show marked performance gains in comparison to state of the art methods on all datasets.

We introduce a multi-task setup of identifying and classifying entities, relations, and coreference clusters in scientific articles. We create SciERC, a dataset that includes annotations for all three tasks and develop a unified framework called Scientific Information Extractor (SciIE) for with shared span representations. The multi-task setup reduces cascading errors between tasks and leverages cross-sentence relations through coreference links. Experiments show that our multi-task model outperforms previous models in scientific information extraction without using any domain-specific features. We further show that the framework supports construction of a scientific knowledge graph, which we use to analyze information in scientific literature.
