In this paper, we study the graph induced by the $\textit{2-swap}$ permutation on words with a fixed Parikh vector. A $2$-swap is defined as a pair of positions $s = (i, j)$ where the word $w$ induced by the swap $s$ on $v$ is $v[1] v[2] \dots v[i - 1] v[j] v[i+1] \dots v[j - 1] v[i] v[j + 1] \dots v[n]$. With these permutations, we define the $\textit{Configuration Graph}$, $G(P)$ defined over a given Parikh vector. Each vertex in $G(P)$ corresponds to a unique word with the Parikh vector $P$, with an edge between any pair of words $v$ and $w$ if there exists a swap $s$ such that $v \circ s = w$. We provide several key combinatorial properties of this graph, including the exact diameter of this graph, the clique number of the graph, and the relationships between subgraphs within this graph. Additionally, we show that for every vertex in the graph, there exists a Hamiltonian path starting at this vertex. Finally, we provide an algorithm enumerating these paths from a given input word of length $n$ with a delay of at most $O(\log n)$ between outputting edges, requiring $O(n \log n)$ preprocessing.

A Las Vegas randomized algorithm is given to compute the Hermite normal form of a nonsingular integer matrix $A$ of dimension $n$. The algorithm uses quadratic integer multiplication and cubic matrix multiplication and has running time bounded by $O(n^3 (\log n + \log ||A||)^2(\log n)^2)$ bit operations, where $||A||= \max_{ij} |A_{ij}|$ denotes the largest entry of $A$ in absolute value. A storage code is an assignment of symbols to the vertices of a connected graph $G(V,E)$ with the property that the value of each vertex is a function of the values of its neighbors, or more generally, of a certain neighborhood of the vertex in $G$. In this work we introduce a new construction method of storage codes, enabling one to construct new codes from known ones via an interleaving procedure driven by resolvable designs. We also study storage codes on $\mathbb Z$ and ${\mathbb Z}^2$ (lines and grids), finding closed-form expressions for the capacity of several one and two-dimensional systems depending on their recovery set, using connections between storage codes, graphs, anticodes, and difference-avoiding sets.

This paper investigates a swarm of autonomous mobile robots in the Euclidean plane, under the semi-synchronous ($\cal SSYNC$) scheduler. Each robot has a target function to determine a destination point from the robots' positions. All robots in the swarm take the same target function conventionally. We allow the robots to take different target functions, and investigate the effects of the number of distinct target functions on the problem-solving ability, regarding target function as a resource to solve a problem like time. Specifically, we are interested in how many distinct target functions are necessary and sufficient to solve a problem $\Pi$. The number of distinct target functions necessary and sufficient to solve $\Pi$ is called the minimum algorithm size (MAS) for $\Pi$. The MAS is defined to be $\infty$, if $\Pi$ is unsolvable even for the robots with unique target functions. We show that the problems form an infinite hierarchy with respect to their MASs; for each integer $c > 0$ and $\infty$, the set of problems whose MAS is $c$ is not empty, which implies that target function is a resource irreplaceable, e.g., with time. We propose MAS as a natural measure to measure the complexity of a problem. We establish the MASs for solving the gathering and related problems from any initial configuration, i.e., in a self-stabilizing manner. For example, the MAS for the gathering problem is 2. It is 3, for the problem of gathering {\bf all non-faulty} robots at a single point, regardless of the number $(< n)$ of crash failures. It is however $\infty$, for the problem of gathering all robots at a single point, in the presence of at most one crash failure.

For projective Reed--Muller-type codes we give a duality criterion in terms of the v-number and the Hilbert function of a vanishing ideal. As an application, we provide an explicit duality for projective Reed--Muller-type codes corresponding to Gorenstein vanishing ideals, generalizing the known case where the vanishing ideal is a complete intersection. The theory of Gorenstein vanishing ideals is examined using indicator functions. For projective evaluation codes, we give local duality criteria inspired by that of affine evaluation codes. We show how to compute the regularity index of the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight function in terms of the standard indicator functions of the set of evaluation points.

We study various aspects of the first-order transduction quasi-order, which provides a way of measuring the relative complexity of classes of structures based on whether one can encode the other using a formula of first-order (FO) logic. In contrast with the conjectured simplicity of the transduction quasi-order for monadic second-order logic, the FO-transduction quasi-order is very complex; in particular, we prove that the quotient partial order is not a lattice, although it is a bounded distributive join-semilattice, as is the subposet of additive classes. Many standard properties from structural graph theory and model theory naturally appear in this quasi-order. For example, we characterize transductions of paths, cubic graphs, and cubic trees in terms of bandwidth, bounded degree, and treewidth. We establish that the classes of all graphs with pathwidth at most~$k$, for $k\geq 1$, form a strict hierarchy in the FO-transduction quasi-order and leave open whether same is true for treewidth. This leads to considering whether properties admit maximum or minimum classes in this quasi-order. We prove that many properties do not admit a maximum class, and that star forests are the minimum class that is not a transduction of a class with bounded degree, which can be seen as an instance of transduction duality. We close with a notion of dense analogues of sparse classes, and discuss several related conjectures. As a ubiquitous tool in our results, we prove a normal form for FO-transductions that manifests the locality of FO logic. This is among several other technical results about FO-transductions which we anticipate being broadly useful.

A garden $G$ is populated by $n\ge 1$ bamboos $b_1, b_2, ..., b_n$ with the respective daily growth rates $h_1 \ge h_2 \ge \dots \ge h_n$. It is assumed that the initial heights of bamboos are zero. The robotic gardener maintaining the garden regularly attends bamboos and trims them to height zero according to some schedule. The Bamboo Garden Trimming Problem (BGT) is to design a perpetual schedule of cuts to maintain the elevation of the bamboo garden as low as possible. The bamboo garden is a metaphor for a collection of machines which have to be serviced, with different frequencies, by a robot which can service only one machine at a time. The objective is to design a perpetual schedule of servicing which minimizes the maximum (weighted) waiting time for servicing. We consider two variants of BGT. In discrete BGT the robot trims only one bamboo at the end of each day. In continuous BGT the bamboos can be cut at any time, however, the robot needs time to move from one bamboo to the next. For discrete BGT, we show tighter approximation algorithms for the case when the growth rates are balanced and for the general case. The former algorithm settles one of the conjectures about the Pinwheel problem. The general approximation algorithm improves on the previous best approximation ratio. For continuous BGT, we propose approximation algorithms which achieve approximation ratios $O(\log \lceil h_1/h_n\rceil)$ and $O(\log n)$.

Partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs are $3$-uniform hypergraphs in which each hyperedge contains exactly one point from each of the $3$ disjoint vertex classes. We consider the degree sequence problem of partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs, that is, to decide if such a hypergraph with prescribed degree sequences exists. We prove that this decision problem is NP-complete in general, and give a polynomial running time algorithm for third almost-regular degree sequences, that is, when each degree in one of the vertex classes is $k$ or $k-1$ for some fixed $k$, and there is no restriction for the other two vertex classes. We also consider the sampling problem, that is, to uniformly sample partite, $3$-uniform hypergraphs with prescribed degree sequences. We propose a Parallel Tempering method, where the hypothetical energy of the hypergraphs measures the deviation from the prescribed degree sequence. The method has been implemented and tested on synthetic and real data. It can also be applied for $\chi^2$ testing of contingency tables. We have shown that this hypergraph-based $\chi^2$ test is more sensitive than the standard $\chi^2$ test. The extra sensitivity is especially advantageous on small data sets, where the proposed Parallel Tempering method shows promising performance.

In the context of Discontinuous Galerkin methods, we study approximations of nonlinear variational problems associated with convex energies. We propose element-wise nonconforming finite element methods to discretize the continuous minimisation problem. Using $\Gamma$-convergence arguments we show that the discrete minimisers converge to the unique minimiser of the continuous problem as the mesh parameter tends to zero, under the additional contribution of appropriately defined penalty terms at the level of the discrete energies. We finally substantiate the feasibility of our methods by numerical examples.

Given a square pencil $A+ \lambda B$, where $A$ and $B$ are complex matrices, we consider the problem of finding the singular pencil nearest to it in the Frobenius distance. This problem is known to be very difficult, and the few algorithms available in the literature can only deal efficiently with pencils of very small size. We show that the problem is equivalent to minimizing a certain objective function over the Riemannian manifold $SU(n) \times SU(n)$, where $SU(n)$ denotes the special unitary group. With minor modifications, the same approach extends to the case of finding a nearest singular pencil with a specified minimal index. This novel perspective is based on the generalized Schur form of pencils, and yields a competitive numerical method, by pairing it with an algorithm capable of doing optimization on a Riemannian manifold. We provide numerical experiments that show that the resulting method allows us to deal with pencils of much larger size than alternative techniques, yielding candidate minimizers of comparable or better quality. In the course of our analysis, we also obtain a number of new theoretical results related to the generalized Schur form of a (regular or singular) square pencil and to the minimal index of a singular square pencil whose nullity is $1$.
