Most recently, the pathology diagnosis of cancer is shifting to integrating molecular makers with histology features. It is a urgent need for digital pathology methods to effectively integrate molecular markers with histology, which could lead to more accurate diagnosis in the real world scenarios. This paper presents a first attempt to jointly predict molecular markers and histology features and model their interactions for classifying diffuse glioma bases on whole slide images. Specifically, we propose a hierarchical multi-task multi-instance learning framework to jointly predict histology and molecular markers. Moreover, we propose a co-occurrence probability-based label correction graph network to model the co-occurrence of molecular markers. Lastly, we design an inter-omic interaction strategy with the dynamical confidence constraint loss to model the interactions of histology and molecular markers. Our experiments show that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in classifying diffuse glioma,as well as related histology and molecular markers on a multi-institutional dataset.

Many medical or pharmaceutical processes have strict guidelines regarding continuous hygiene monitoring. This often involves the labor-intensive task of manually counting microorganisms in Petri dishes by trained personnel. Automation attempts often struggle due to major challenges: significant scaling differences, low separation, low contrast, etc. To address these challenges, we introduce AttnPAFPN, a high-resolution detection pipeline that leverages a novel transformer variation, the efficient-global self-attention mechanism. Our streamlined approach can be easily integrated in almost any multi-scale object detection pipeline. In a comprehensive evaluation on the publicly available AGAR dataset, we demonstrate the superior accuracy of our network over the current state-of-the-art. In order to demonstrate the task-independent performance of our approach, we perform further experiments on COCO and LIVECell datasets.

Developing objective methods for assessing the severity of Parkinson's disease (PD) is crucial for improving the diagnosis and treatment. This study proposes two sets of novel features derived from the single frequency filtering (SFF) method: (1) SFF cepstral coefficients (SFFCC) and (2) MFCCs from the SFF (MFCC-SFF) for the severity classification of PD. Prior studies have demonstrated that SFF offers greater spectro-temporal resolution compared to the short-time Fourier transform. The study uses the PC-GITA database, which includes speech of PD patients and healthy controls produced in three speaking tasks (vowels, sentences, text reading). Experiments using the SVM classifier revealed that the proposed features outperformed the conventional MFCCs in all three speaking tasks. The proposed SFFCC and MFCC-SFF features gave a relative improvement of 5.8% and 2.3% for the vowel task, 7.0% & 1.8% for the sentence task, and 2.4% and 1.1% for the read text task, in comparison to MFCC features.

Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and GPT4, have shown outstanding performance in many human life task. Attention computation plays an important role in training LLMs. Softmax unit and ReLU unit are the key structure in attention computation. Inspired by them, we put forward a softmax ReLU regression problem. Generally speaking, our goal is to find an optimal solution to the regression problem involving the ReLU unit. In this work, we calculate a close form representation for the Hessian of the loss function. Under certain assumptions, we prove the Lipschitz continuous and the PSDness of the Hessian. Then, we introduce an greedy algorithm based on approximate Newton method, which converges in the sense of the distance to optimal solution. Last, We relax the Lipschitz condition and prove the convergence in the sense of loss value.

Designing a mechanism to mimic the motion of a common house gecko is the objective of this work. The body of the robot is designed using four five-bar mechanisms (2-RRRRR and 2-RRPRR) and the leg is designed using four four-bar mechanisms. The 2-RRRRR five-bar mechanisms form the head and tail of the robotic lizard. The 2-RRPRR five-bar mechanisms form the left and right sides of the body in the robotic lizard. The four five-bar mechanisms are actuated by only four rotary actuators. Of these, two actuators control the head movements and the other two control the tail movements. The RRPRR five-bar mechanism is controlled by one actuator from the head five-bar mechanism and the other by the tail five-bar mechanism. A tension spring connects each active link to a link in the four bar mechanism. When the robot is actuated, the head, tail and the body moves, and simultaneously each leg moves accordingly. This kind of actuation where the motion transfer occurs from body of the robot to the leg is the novelty in our design. The dimensional synthesis of the robotic lizard is done and presented. Then the forward and inverse kinematics of the mechanism, and configuration space singularities identification for the robot are presented. The gait exhibited by the gecko is studied and then simulated. A computer aided design of the robotic lizard is created and a prototype is made by 3D printing the parts. The prototype is controlled using Arduino UNO as a micro-controller. The experimental results are finally presented based on the gait analysis that was done earlier. The forward walking, and turning motion are done and snapshots are presented.

Background: Outcome measures that are count variables with excessive zeros are common in health behaviors research. There is a lack of empirical data about the relative performance of prevailing statistical models when outcomes are zero-inflated, particularly compared with recently developed approaches. Methods: The current simulation study examined five commonly used analytical approaches for count outcomes, including two linear models (with outcomes on raw and log-transformed scales, respectively) and three count distribution-based models (i.e., Poisson, negative binomial, and zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) models). We also considered the marginalized zero-inflated Poisson (MZIP) model, a novel alternative that estimates the effects on overall mean while adjusting for zero-inflation. Extensive simulations were conducted to evaluate their the statistical power and Type I error rate across various data conditions. Results: Under zero-inflation, the Poisson model failed to control the Type I error rate, resulting in higher than expected false positive results. When the intervention effects on the zero (vs. non-zero) and count parts were in the same direction, the MZIP model had the highest statistical power, followed by the linear model with outcomes on raw scale, negative binomial model, and ZIP model. The performance of a linear model with a log-transformed outcome variable was unsatisfactory. When only one of the effects on the zero (vs. non-zero) part and the count part existed, the ZIP model had the highest statistical power. Conclusions: The MZIP model demonstrated better statistical properties in detecting true intervention effects and controlling false positive results for zero-inflated count outcomes. This MZIP model may serve as an appealing analytical approach to evaluating overall intervention effects in studies with count outcomes marked by excessive zeros.

Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, are becoming increasingly sophisticated, demonstrating capabilities that closely resemble those of humans. These AI models are playing an essential role in assisting humans with a wide array of tasks in daily life. A significant application of AI is its use as a chat agent, responding to human inquiries across various domains. Current LLMs have shown proficiency in answering general questions. However, basic question-answering dialogue often falls short in complex diagnostic scenarios, such as legal or medical consultations. These scenarios typically necessitate Task-Oriented Dialogue (TOD), wherein an AI chat agent needs to proactively pose questions and guide users towards specific task completion. Previous fine-tuning models have underperformed in TOD, and current LLMs do not inherently possess this capability. In this paper, we introduce DiagGPT (Dialogue in Diagnosis GPT), an innovative method that extends LLMs to TOD scenarios. Our experiments reveal that DiagGPT exhibits outstanding performance in conducting TOD with users, demonstrating its potential for practical applications.

Contrastive loss has been increasingly used in learning representations from multiple modalities. In the limit, the nature of the contrastive loss encourages modalities to exactly match each other in the latent space. Yet it remains an open question how the modality alignment affects the downstream task performance. In this paper, based on an information-theoretic argument, we first prove that exact modality alignment is sub-optimal in general for downstream prediction tasks. Hence we advocate that the key of better performance lies in meaningful latent modality structures instead of perfect modality alignment. To this end, we propose three general approaches to construct latent modality structures. Specifically, we design 1) a deep feature separation loss for intra-modality regularization; 2) a Brownian-bridge loss for inter-modality regularization; and 3) a geometric consistency loss for both intra- and inter-modality regularization. Extensive experiments are conducted on two popular multi-modal representation learning frameworks: the CLIP-based two-tower model and the ALBEF-based fusion model. We test our model on a variety of tasks including zero/few-shot image classification, image-text retrieval, visual question answering, visual reasoning, and visual entailment. Our method achieves consistent improvements over existing methods, demonstrating the effectiveness and generalizability of our proposed approach on latent modality structure regularization.

It has been shown that deep neural networks are prone to overfitting on biased training data. Towards addressing this issue, meta-learning employs a meta model for correcting the training bias. Despite the promising performances, super slow training is currently the bottleneck in the meta learning approaches. In this paper, we introduce a novel Faster Meta Update Strategy (FaMUS) to replace the most expensive step in the meta gradient computation with a faster layer-wise approximation. We empirically find that FaMUS yields not only a reasonably accurate but also a low-variance approximation of the meta gradient. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the proposed method on two tasks. We show our method is able to save two-thirds of the training time while still maintaining the comparable or achieving even better generalization performance. In particular, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on both synthetic and realistic noisy labels, and obtains promising performance on long-tailed recognition on standard benchmarks.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are successful in many computer vision tasks. However, the most accurate DNNs require millions of parameters and operations, making them energy, computation and memory intensive. This impedes the deployment of large DNNs in low-power devices with limited compute resources. Recent research improves DNN models by reducing the memory requirement, energy consumption, and number of operations without significantly decreasing the accuracy. This paper surveys the progress of low-power deep learning and computer vision, specifically in regards to inference, and discusses the methods for compacting and accelerating DNN models. The techniques can be divided into four major categories: (1) parameter quantization and pruning, (2) compressed convolutional filters and matrix factorization, (3) network architecture search, and (4) knowledge distillation. We analyze the accuracy, advantages, disadvantages, and potential solutions to the problems with the techniques in each category. We also discuss new evaluation metrics as a guideline for future research.
