Blind Omnidirectional Image Quality Assessment (BOIQA) aims to objectively assess the human perceptual quality of omnidirectional images (ODIs) without relying on pristine-quality image information. It is becoming more significant with the increasing advancement of virtual reality (VR) technology. However, the quality assessment of ODIs is severely hampered by the fact that the existing BOIQA pipeline lacks the modeling of the observer's browsing process. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel multi-sequence network for BOIQA called Assessor360, which is derived from the realistic multi-assessor ODI quality assessment procedure. Specifically, we propose a generalized Recursive Probability Sampling (RPS) method for the BOIQA task, combining content and detailed information to generate multiple pseudo viewport sequences from a given starting point. Additionally, we design a Multi-scale Feature Aggregation (MFA) module with Distortion-aware Block (DAB) to fuse distorted and semantic features of each viewport. We also devise TMM to learn the viewport transition in the temporal domain. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that Assessor360 outperforms state-of-the-art methods on multiple OIQA datasets.
Ultrasound imaging is a commonly used modality for several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. However, the diagnosis by ultrasound relies heavily on the quality of images assessed manually by sonographers, which diminishes the objectivity of the diagnosis and makes it operator-dependent. The supervised learning-based methods for automated quality assessment require manually annotated datasets, which are highly labour-intensive to acquire. These ultrasound images are low in quality and suffer from noisy annotations caused by inter-observer perceptual variations, which hampers learning efficiency. We propose an UnSupervised UltraSound image Quality assessment Network, US2QNet, that eliminates the burden and uncertainty of manual annotations. US2QNet uses the variational autoencoder embedded with the three modules, pre-processing, clustering and post-processing, to jointly enhance, extract, cluster and visualize the quality feature representation of ultrasound images. The pre-processing module uses filtering of images to point the network's attention towards salient quality features, rather than getting distracted by noise. Post-processing is proposed for visualizing the clusters of feature representations in 2D space. We validated the proposed framework for quality assessment of the urinary bladder ultrasound images. The proposed framework achieved 78% accuracy and superior performance to state-of-the-art clustering methods.
Limited by imaging systems, the reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images from partial measurement is essential to medical imaging research. Benefiting from the diverse and complementary information of multi-contrast MR images in different imaging modalities, multi-contrast Super-Resolution (SR) reconstruction is promising to yield SR images with higher quality. In the medical scenario, to fully visualize the lesion, radiologists are accustomed to zooming the MR images at arbitrary scales rather than using a fixed scale, as used by most MRI SR methods. In addition, existing multi-contrast MRI SR methods often require a fixed resolution for the reference image, which makes acquiring reference images difficult and imposes limitations on arbitrary scale SR tasks. To address these issues, we proposed an implicit neural representations based dual-arbitrary multi-contrast MRI super-resolution method, called Dual-ArbNet. First, we decouple the resolution of the target and reference images by a feature encoder, enabling the network to input target and reference images at arbitrary scales. Then, an implicit fusion decoder fuses the multi-contrast features and uses an Implicit Decoding Function~(IDF) to obtain the final MRI SR results. Furthermore, we introduce a curriculum learning strategy to train our network, which improves the generalization and performance of our Dual-ArbNet. Extensive experiments in two public MRI datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches under different scale factors and has great potential in clinical practice.
Localizing mobile robotic nodes in indoor and GPS-denied environments is a complex problem, particularly in dynamic, unstructured scenarios where traditional cameras and LIDAR-based sensing and localization modalities may fail. Alternatively, wireless signal-based localization has been extensively studied in the literature yet primarily focuses on fingerprinting and feature-matching paradigms, requiring dedicated environment-specific offline data collection. We propose an online robot localization algorithm enabled by collaborative wireless sensor nodes to remedy these limitations. Our approach's core novelty lies in obtaining the Collaborative Direction of Arrival (CDOA) of wireless signals by exploiting the geometric features and collaboration between wireless nodes. The CDOA is combined with the Expectation Maximization (EM) and Particle Filter (PF) algorithms to calculate the Gaussian probability of the node's location with high efficiency and accuracy. The algorithm relies on RSSI-only data, making it ubiquitous to resource-constrained devices. We theoretically analyze the approach and extensively validate the proposed method's consistency, accuracy, and computational efficiency in simulations, real-world public datasets, as well as real robot demonstrations. The results validate the method's real-time computational capability and demonstrate considerably-high centimeter-level localization accuracy, outperforming relevant state-of-the-art localization approaches.
Investigating how people perceive virtual reality videos in the wild (\ie, those captured by everyday users) is a crucial and challenging task in VR-related applications due to complex \textit{authentic} distortions localized in space and time. Existing panoramic video databases only consider synthetic distortions, assume fixed viewing conditions, and are limited in size. To overcome these shortcomings, we construct the VR Video Quality in the Wild (VRVQW) database, which is one of the first of its kind, and contains $502$ user-generated videos with diverse content and distortion characteristics. Based on VRVQW, we conduct a formal psychophysical experiment to record the scanpaths and perceived quality scores from $139$ participants under two different viewing conditions. We provide a thorough statistical analysis of the recorded data, observing significant impact of viewing conditions on both human scanpaths and perceived quality. Moreover, we develop an objective quality assessment model for VR videos based on pseudocylindrical representation and convolution. Results on the proposed VRVQW show that our method is superior to existing video quality assessment models, only underperforming viewport-based models that otherwise rely on human scanpaths for projection. Last, we explore the additional use of the VRVQW dataset to benchmark saliency detection techniques, highlighting the need for further research. To boost the secrecy rate (SR) of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network and overcome the double fading effect of the cascaded channels of passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), a novel active IRS-assisted DM system is investigated in this paper. Aiming to maximize the SR, two power allocation (PA) strategies, called maximizing SR based on fractional programming (FP) (Max-SR-FP) and maximizing SR based on derivative operation (DO) (Max-SR-DO), are proposed by jointly designing the PA factors, beamforming vector, and phase shift matrix of IRS, subject to the power constraint at IRS. The former with higher performance employs the FP and successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithms to design the confidential message PA factor and the total PA factor at the base station, and the SCA algorithm is also utilized to design the beamforming vector and the phase shift matrix of the IRS. The latter with lower complexity adopts the DO, and equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) and general power iterative (GPI) methods to solve them, respectively. The simulation results show that compared with the benchmark PA schemes, both the proposed PA schemes achieve a significant SR performance improvement. Moreover, the SR gap between two proposed schemes decreases gradually with the increases of the number of IRS phase shift element.
Variable selection is a procedure to attain the truly important predictors from inputs. Complex nonlinear dependencies and strong coupling pose great challenges for variable selection in high-dimensional data. In addition, real-world applications have increased demands for interpretability of the selection process. A pragmatic approach should not only attain the most predictive covariates, but also provide ample and easy-to-understand grounds for removing certain covariates. In view of these requirements, this paper puts forward an approach for transparent and nonlinear variable selection. In order to transparently decouple information within the input predictors, a three-step heuristic search is designed, via which the input predictors are grouped into four subsets: the relevant to be selected, and the uninformative, redundant, and conditionally independent to be removed. A nonlinear partial correlation coefficient is introduced to better identify the predictors which have nonlinear functional dependence with the response. The proposed method is model-free and the selected subset can be competent input for commonly used predictive models. Experiments demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method against the state-of-the-art baselines in terms of prediction accuracy and model interpretability.
Species distribution modeling (SDM) plays a crucial role in investigating habitat suitability and addressing various ecological issues. While likelihood analysis is commonly used to draw ecological conclusions, it has been observed that its statistical performance is not robust when faced with slight deviations due to misspecification in SDM. We propose a new robust estimation method based on a novel divergence for the Poisson point process model. The proposed method is characterized by weighting the log-likelihood equation to mitigate the impact of heterogeneous observations in the presence-only data, which can result from model misspecification. We demonstrate that the proposed method improves the predictive performance of the maximum likelihood estimation in our simulation studies and in the analysis of vascular plant data in Japan.
Anatomy education is essential to support medical students in understanding the morphology, location, and spatial relationships of anatomical structures. Virtual reality (VR) and interactive 3D visualization systems have been proposed to provide an engaging learning experience and environment. However, VR-based systems integrated with a generative artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for anatomy education are still underrepresented. This work presents a VR environment with a generative AI virtual assistant to support human anatomy education, allowing the user to communicate verbally with the virtual assistant. We aim to provide a more interactive, adaptive, and informative learning experience. The proposed environment was assessed in a pilot user study (n = 16) with a comparison of two configurations: avatar and screen-based virtual assistant. We observed no significant difference between the configurations and difficulty level in the task completion time and the number of interactions with the virtual assistant. However, there was a significant difference in the score between the difficulty level in the avatar configuration. The results also provide insights into the usability, task load, and sense of presence in the virtual environment. Our proposed environment offers potential benefits and research directions for medical education, using generative AI to assist and enhance the learning experience.
Vision-based vehicle detection approaches achieve incredible success in recent years with the development of deep convolutional neural network (CNN). However, existing CNN based algorithms suffer from the problem that the convolutional features are scale-sensitive in object detection task but it is common that traffic images and videos contain vehicles with a large variance of scales. In this paper, we delve into the source of scale sensitivity, and reveal two key issues: 1) existing RoI pooling destroys the structure of small scale objects, 2) the large intra-class distance for a large variance of scales exceeds the representation capability of a single network. Based on these findings, we present a scale-insensitive convolutional neural network (SINet) for fast detecting vehicles with a large variance of scales. First, we present a context-aware RoI pooling to maintain the contextual information and original structure of small scale objects. Second, we present a multi-branch decision network to minimize the intra-class distance of features. These lightweight techniques bring zero extra time complexity but prominent detection accuracy improvement. The proposed techniques can be equipped with any deep network architectures and keep them trained end-to-end. Our SINet achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of accuracy and speed (up to 37 FPS) on the KITTI benchmark and a new highway dataset, which contains a large variance of scales and extremely small objects.
Image segmentation is still an open problem especially when intensities of the interested objects are overlapped due to the presence of intensity inhomogeneity (also known as bias field). To segment images with intensity inhomogeneities, a bias correction embedded level set model is proposed where Inhomogeneities are Estimated by Orthogonal Primary Functions (IEOPF). In the proposed model, the smoothly varying bias is estimated by a linear combination of a given set of orthogonal primary functions. An inhomogeneous intensity clustering energy is then defined and membership functions of the clusters described by the level set function are introduced to rewrite the energy as a data term of the proposed model. Similar to popular level set methods, a regularization term and an arc length term are also included to regularize and smooth the level set function, respectively. The proposed model is then extended to multichannel and multiphase patterns to segment colourful images and images with multiple objects, respectively. It has been extensively tested on both synthetic and real images that are widely used in the literature and public BrainWeb and IBSR datasets. Experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that advantages of the proposed model in terms of bias correction and segmentation accuracy.
