Like most modern blockchain networks, Ethereum has relied on economic incentives to promote honest participation in the chain's consensus. The distributed character of the platform, together with the "randomness" or "luck" factor that both proof of work (PoW) and proof of stake (PoS) provide when electing the next block proposer, pushed the industry to model and improve the reward system of the system. With several improvements to predict PoW block proposal rewards and to maximize the extractable rewards of the same ones, the ultimate Ethereum's transition to PoS applied in the Paris Hard-Fork, more generally known as "The Merge", has meant a significant modification on the reward system in the platform. In this paper, we aim to break down both theoretically and empirically the new reward system in this post-merge era. We present a highly detailed description of the different rewards and their share among validators' rewards. Ultimately, we offer a study that uses the presented reward model to analyze the performance of the network during this transition.

While the 5th generation (5G) of mobile networks has landed in the commercial area, the research community is exploring new functionalities for 6th generation (6G) networks, for example non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) via space/air nodes such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), High Altitute Platforms (HAPs) or satellites. Specifically, satellite-based communication offers new opportunities for future wireless applications, such as providing connectivity to remote or otherwise unconnected areas, complementing terrestrial networks to reduce connection downtime, as well as increasing traffic efficiency in hot spot areas. In this context, an accurate characterization of the NTN channel is the first step towards proper protocol design. Along these lines, this paper provides an ns-3 implementation of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) channel and antenna models for NTN described in Technical Report 38.811. In particular, we extend the ns-3 code base with new modules to implement the attenuation of the signal in air/space due to atmospheric gases and scintillation, and new mobility and fading models to account for the Geocentric Cartesian coordinate system of satellites. Finally, we validate the accuracy of our ns-3 module via simulations against 3GPP calibration results

With the explosive growth of textual information, summarization systems have become increasingly important. This work aims at indicating the current state of the art in abstractive text summarization concisely. As part of this, we outline the current paradigm shifts towards pre-trained encoder-decoder models and large autoregressive language models. Additionally, we delve further into the challenges of evaluating summarization systems and the potential of instruction-tuned models for zero-shot summarization. Finally, we provide a brief overview of how summarization systems are currently being integrated into commercial applications.

Pick-and-place robots are commonly used in modern industrial manufacturing. For complex devices/parts like camera modules used in smartphones, which contain optical parts, electrical components and interfacing connectors, the placement operation may not absolutely accurate, which may cause damage in the device under test during the mechanical movement to make good contact for electrical functions inspection. In this paper, we proposed an effective vision system including hardware and algorithm to enhance the reliability of the pick-and-place robot for autonomous testing memory of camera modules. With limited hardware based on camera and raspberry PI and using simplify image processing algorithm based on histogram information, the vision system can confirm the presence of the camera modules in feeding tray and the placement accuracy of the camera module in test socket. Through that, the system can work with more flexibility and avoid damaging the device under test. The system was experimentally quantified through testing approximately 2000 camera modules in a stable light condition. Experimental results demonstrate that the system achieves accuracy of more than 99.92%. With its simplicity and effectiveness, the proposed vision system can be considered as a useful solution for using in pick-and-place systems in industry.

Much HCI research on prompting prosocial behaviors focuses on methods for increasing empathy. However, increased empathy may have unintended negative consequences. Our work offers an alternative solution that encourages critical reflection for nurturing compassion, which involves motivation and action to help others. In a between-subject experiment, participants (N=60) viewed a climate change documentary while receiving no prompts (CON), reflective prompts to focus on their emotions (RE) or surprises (RS). State compassion, critical reflection, and motivation to act or learn were measured at the end of the session (post-video) and two weeks later (follow-up). Despite participants' condition not affecting compassion, critical reflection was positively correlated with post-video state compassion. RE and RS participants demonstrated deeper reflection and reported higher motivation to learn post-video, and more prosocial behavioral changes during follow-up. RS participants reported better follow-up recall than RE participants. We conclude by discussing implications on designing technology to support compassion and longer-term critical reflection.

Object Storage Systems (OSS) inside a cloud promise scalability, durability, availability, and concurrency. However, open-source OSS does not have a specific approach to letting users and administrators search based on the data, which is contained inside the object storage, without involving the entire cloud infrastructure. Therefore, in this paper, we propose Sherlock, a novel Content-Based Searching (CoBS) architecture to extract additional information from images and documents. Here, we store the additional information in an Elasticsearch-enabled database, which helps us to search for our desired data based on its contents. This approach works in two sequential stages. First, the data will be uploaded to a classifier that will determine the data type and send it to the specific model for the data. Here, the images that are being uploaded are sent to our trained model for object detection, and the documents are sent for keyword extraction. Next, the extracted information is sent to Elasticsearch, which enables searching based on the contents. Because the precision of the models is so fundamental to the search's correctness, we train our models with comprehensive datasets (Microsoft COCO Dataset for multimedia data and SemEval2017 Dataset for document data). Furthermore, we put our designed architecture to the test with a real-world implementation of an open-source OSS called OpenStack Swift. We upload images into the dataset of our implementation in various segments to find out the efficacy of our proposed model in real-life Swift object storage.

Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals are easily contaminated by motion artifacts in real-world settings, despite their widespread use in Internet-of-Things (IoT) based wearable and smart health devices for cardiovascular health monitoring. This study proposed a lightweight deep neural network, called Tiny-PPG, for accurate and real-time PPG artifact segmentation on IoT edge devices. The model was trained and tested on a public dataset, PPG DaLiA, which featured complex artifacts with diverse lengths and morphologies during various daily activities of 15 subjects using a watch-type device (Empatica E4). The model structure, training method and loss function were specifically designed to balance detection accuracy and speed for real-time PPG artifact detection in resource-constrained embedded devices. To optimize the model size and capability in multi-scale feature representation, the model employed deep separable convolution and atrous spatial pyramid pooling modules, respectively. Additionally, the contrastive loss was also utilized to further optimize the feature embeddings. With additional model pruning, Tiny-PPG achieved state-of-the-art detection accuracy of 87.8% while only having 19,726 model parameters (0.15 megabytes), and was successfully deployed on an STM32 embedded system for real-time PPG artifact detection. Therefore, this study provides an effective solution for resource-constraint IoT smart health devices in PPG artifact detection.

In this article, we develop an interdisciplinary analysis of MEV which desires to merge the gap that exists between technical and legal research supporting policymakers in their regulatory decisions concerning blockchains, DeFi and associated risks. Consequently, this article is intended for both technical and legal audiences, and while we abstain from a detailed legal analysis, we aim to open a policy discussion regarding decentralized governance design at the block building layer as the place where MEV occurs. Maximal Extractable Value or MEV has been one of the major concerns in blockchain designs as it creates a centralizing force which ultimately affects user transactions. In this article, we dive into the technicality behind MEV, where we explain the concept behind the novel Proposal Builder Separation design as an effort by Flashbots to increase decentralization through modularity. We underline potential vulnerability factors under the PBS design, which open space for MEV extracting adversarial strategies by inside participants. We discuss the shift of trust from validators to builders in PoS blockchains such as Ethereum, acknowledging the impact that the later ones may have on users' transactions (in terms of front running) and censorship resistance (in terms of transaction inclusion). We recognize that under PBS, centralized (dominant) entities such as builders could potentially harm users by extracting MEV via front running strategies. Finally, we suggest adequate design and policy measures which could potentially mitigate these negative effects while protecting blockchain users.

Sources of commonsense knowledge aim to support applications in natural language understanding, computer vision, and knowledge graphs. These sources contain complementary knowledge to each other, which makes their integration desired. Yet, such integration is not trivial because of their different foci, modeling approaches, and sparse overlap. In this paper, we propose to consolidate commonsense knowledge by following five principles. We apply these principles to combine seven key sources into a first integrated CommonSense Knowledge Graph (CSKG). We perform analysis of CSKG and its various text and graph embeddings, showing that CSKG is a well-connected graph and that its embeddings provide a useful entry point to the graph. Moreover, we show the impact of CSKG as a source for reasoning evidence retrieval, and for pre-training language models for generalizable downstream reasoning. CSKG and all its embeddings are made publicly available to support further research on commonsense knowledge integration and reasoning.

For deploying a deep learning model into production, it needs to be both accurate and compact to meet the latency and memory constraints. This usually results in a network that is deep (to ensure performance) and yet thin (to improve computational efficiency). In this paper, we propose an efficient method to train a deep thin network with a theoretic guarantee. Our method is motivated by model compression. It consists of three stages. In the first stage, we sufficiently widen the deep thin network and train it until convergence. In the second stage, we use this well-trained deep wide network to warm up (or initialize) the original deep thin network. This is achieved by letting the thin network imitate the immediate outputs of the wide network from layer to layer. In the last stage, we further fine tune this well initialized deep thin network. The theoretical guarantee is established by using mean field analysis, which shows the advantage of layerwise imitation over traditional training deep thin networks from scratch by backpropagation. We also conduct large-scale empirical experiments to validate our approach. By training with our method, ResNet50 can outperform ResNet101, and BERT_BASE can be comparable with BERT_LARGE, where both the latter models are trained via the standard training procedures as in the literature.

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a special type of Neural Networks, which have shown state-of-the-art results on various competitive benchmarks. The powerful learning ability of deep CNN is largely achieved with the use of multiple non-linear feature extraction stages that can automatically learn hierarchical representation from the data. Availability of a large amount of data and improvements in the hardware processing units have accelerated the research in CNNs and recently very interesting deep CNN architectures are reported. The recent race in deep CNN architectures for achieving high performance on the challenging benchmarks has shown that the innovative architectural ideas, as well as parameter optimization, can improve the CNN performance on various vision-related tasks. In this regard, different ideas in the CNN design have been explored such as use of different activation and loss functions, parameter optimization, regularization, and restructuring of processing units. However, the major improvement in representational capacity is achieved by the restructuring of the processing units. Especially, the idea of using a block as a structural unit instead of a layer is gaining substantial appreciation. This survey thus focuses on the intrinsic taxonomy present in the recently reported CNN architectures and consequently, classifies the recent innovations in CNN architectures into seven different categories. These seven categories are based on spatial exploitation, depth, multi-path, width, feature map exploitation, channel boosting and attention. Additionally, it covers the elementary understanding of the CNN components and sheds light on the current challenges and applications of CNNs.
