Defining and measuring trust in dynamic, multiagent teams is important in a range of contexts, particularly in defense and security domains. Team members should be trusted to work towards agreed goals and in accordance with shared values. In this paper, our concern is with the definition of goals and values such that it is possible to define 'trust' in a way that is interpretable, and hence usable, by both humans and robots. We argue that the outcome of team activity can be considered in terms of 'goal', 'individual/team values', and 'legal principles'. We question whether alignment is possible at the level of 'individual/team values', or only at the 'goal' and 'legal principles' levels. We argue for a set of metrics to define trust in human-robot teams that are interpretable by human or robot team members, and consider an experiment that could demonstrate the notion of 'satisficing trust' over the course of a simulated mission.

Weak supervision has emerged as a promising approach for rapid and large-scale dataset creation in response to the increasing demand for accelerated NLP development. By leveraging labeling functions, weak supervision allows practitioners to generate datasets quickly by creating learned label models that produce soft-labeled datasets. This paper aims to show how such an approach can be utilized to build an Indonesian NLP dataset from conservation news text. We construct two types of datasets: multi-class classification and sentiment classification. We then provide baseline experiments using various pretrained language models. These baseline results demonstrate test performances of 59.79% accuracy and 55.72% F1-score for sentiment classification, 66.87% F1-score-macro, 71.5% F1-score-micro, and 83.67% ROC-AUC for multi-class classification. Additionally, we release the datasets and labeling functions used in this work for further research and exploration.

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) provides opportunities for the promotion of deep neural network (DNN)-based applications. However, the large amount of parameters and computational complexity of DNN makes it difficult to deploy it on edge devices which are resource-constrained. An efficient method to address this challenge is model partition/splitting, in which DNN is divided into two parts which are deployed on device and server respectively for co-training or co-inference. In this paper, we consider a split federated learning (SFL) framework that combines the parallel model training mechanism of federated learning (FL) and the model splitting structure of split learning (SL). We consider a practical scenario of heterogeneous devices with individual split points of DNN. We formulate a joint problem of split point selection and bandwidth allocation to minimize the system latency. By using alternating optimization, we decompose the problem into two sub-problems and solve them optimally. Experiment results demonstrate the superiority of our work in latency reduction and accuracy improvement.

When developing policies for prevention of infectious diseases, policymakers often set specific, outcome-oriented targets to achieve. For example, when developing a vaccine allocation policy, policymakers may want to distribute them so that at least a certain fraction of individuals in a census block are disease-free and spillover effects due to interference within blocks are accounted for. The paper proposes methods to estimate a block-level treatment policy that achieves a pre-defined, outcome-oriented target while accounting for spillover effects due to interference. Our policy, the minimum resource threshold policy (MRTP), suggests the minimum fraction of treated units required within a block to meet or exceed the target level of the outcome. We estimate the MRTP from empirical risk minimization using a novel, nonparametric, doubly robust loss function. We then characterize statistical properties of the estimated MRTP in terms of the excess risk bound. We apply our methodology to design a water, sanitation, and hygiene allocation policy for Senegal with the goal of increasing the proportion of households with no children experiencing diarrhea to a level exceeding a specified threshold. Our policy outperforms competing policies and offers new approaches to design allocation policies, especially in international development for communicable diseases.

Multimodal learning assumes all modality combinations of interest are available during training to learn cross-modal correspondences.In this paper, we challenge this modality-complete assumption for multimodal learning and instead strive for generalization to unseen modality combinations during inference. We pose the problem of unseen modality interaction and introduce a first solution. It exploits a module that projects the multidimensional features of different modalities into a common space with rich information preserved. This allows the information to be accumulated with a simple summation operation across available modalities. To reduce overfitting to less discriminative modality combinations during training, we further improve the model learning with pseudo-supervision indicating the reliability of a modality's prediction. We demonstrate that our approach is effective for diverse tasks and modalities by evaluating it for multimodal video classification, robot state regression, and multimedia retrieval. Mixed membership models, or partial membership models, are a flexible unsupervised learning method that allows each observation to belong to multiple clusters. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian mixed membership model for functional data. By using the multivariate Karhunen-Lo\`eve theorem, we are able to derive a scalable representation of Gaussian processes that maintains data-driven learning of the covariance structure. Within this framework, we establish conditional posterior consistency given a known feature allocation matrix. Compared to previous work on mixed membership models, our proposal allows for increased modeling flexibility, with the benefit of a directly interpretable mean and covariance structure. Our work is motivated by studies in functional brain imaging through electroencephalography (EEG) of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this context, our work formalizes the clinical notion of "spectrum" in terms of feature membership proportions.

We study a new non-stochastic federated multi-armed bandit problem with multiple agents collaborating via a communication network. The losses of the arms are assigned by an oblivious adversary that specifies the loss of each arm not only for each time step but also for each agent, which we call ``doubly adversarial". In this setting, different agents may choose the same arm in the same time step but observe different feedback. The goal of each agent is to find a globally best arm in hindsight that has the lowest cumulative loss averaged over all agents, which necessities the communication among agents. We provide regret lower bounds for any federated bandit algorithm under different settings, when agents have access to full-information feedback, or the bandit feedback. For the bandit feedback setting, we propose a near-optimal federated bandit algorithm called FEDEXP3. Our algorithm gives a positive answer to an open question proposed in Cesa-Bianchi et al. (2016): FEDEXP3 can guarantee a sub-linear regret without exchanging sequences of selected arm identities or loss sequences among agents. We also provide numerical evaluations of our algorithm to validate our theoretical results and demonstrate its effectiveness on synthetic and real-world datasets

Empirical risk minimization can lead to poor generalization behavior on unseen environments if the learned model does not capture invariant feature representations. Invariant risk minimization (IRM) is a recent proposal for discovering environment-invariant representations. IRM was introduced by Arjovsky et al. (2019) and extended by Ahuja et al. (2020). IRM assumes that all environments are available to the learning system at the same time. With this work, we generalize the concept of IRM to scenarios where environments are observed sequentially. We show that existing approaches, including those designed for continual learning, fail to identify the invariant features and models across sequentially presented environments. We extend IRM under a variational Bayesian and bilevel framework, creating a general approach to continual invariant risk minimization. We also describe a strategy to solve the optimization problems using a variant of the alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM). We show empirically using multiple datasets and with multiple sequential environments that the proposed methods outperform or is competitive with prior approaches.

This paper introduces a dynamic minimum variance portfolio (MVP) model using nonlinear volatility dynamic models, based on high-frequency financial data. Specifically, we impose an autoregressive dynamic structure on MVP processes, which helps capture the MVP dynamics directly. To evaluate the dynamic MVP model, we estimate the inverse volatility matrix using the constrained $\ell_1$-minimization for inverse matrix estimation (CLIME) and calculate daily realized non-normalized MVP weights. Based on the realized non-normalized MVP weight estimator, we propose the dynamic MVP model, which we call the dynamic realized minimum variance portfolio (DR-MVP) model. To estimate a large number of parameters, we employ the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and predict the future MVP and establish its asymptotic properties. Using high-frequency trading data, we apply the proposed method to MVP prediction.

Topic segmentation is critical for obtaining structured long documents and improving downstream tasks like information retrieval. Due to its ability of automatically exploring clues of topic shift from a large amount of labeled data, recent supervised neural models have greatly promoted the development of long document topic segmentation, but leaving the deeper relationship of semantic coherence and topic segmentation underexplored. Therefore, this paper enhances the supervised model's ability to capture coherence from both structure and similarity perspectives to further improve the topic segmentation performance, including the Topic-aware Sentence Structure Prediction (TSSP) and Contrastive Semantic Similarity Learning (CSSL). Specifically, the TSSP task is proposed to force the model to comprehend structural information by learning the original relations of adjacent sentences in a disarrayed document, which is constructed by jointly disrupting the original document at the topic and sentence levels. In addition, we utilize inter- and intra-topic information to construct contrastive samples and design the CSSL objective to ensure that the sentences representations in the same topic have higher semantic similarity, while those in different topics are less similar. Extensive experiments show that the Longformer with our approach significantly outperforms old state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Our approach improves $F_{1}$ of old SOTA by 3.42 (73.74 -> 77.16) and reduces $P_{k}$ by 1.11 points (15.0 -> 13.89) on WIKI-727K and achieves an average reduction of 0.83 points on $P_{k}$ on WikiSection. The average $P_{k}$ drop of 2.82 points on the two out-of-domain datasets also illustrates the robustness of our approach

Graphs, which describe pairwise relations between objects, are essential representations of many real-world data such as social networks. In recent years, graph neural networks, which extend the neural network models to graph data, have attracted increasing attention. Graph neural networks have been applied to advance many different graph related tasks such as reasoning dynamics of the physical system, graph classification, and node classification. Most of the existing graph neural network models have been designed for static graphs, while many real-world graphs are inherently dynamic. For example, social networks are naturally evolving as new users joining and new relations being created. Current graph neural network models cannot utilize the dynamic information in dynamic graphs. However, the dynamic information has been proven to enhance the performance of many graph analytical tasks such as community detection and link prediction. Hence, it is necessary to design dedicated graph neural networks for dynamic graphs. In this paper, we propose DGNN, a new {\bf D}ynamic {\bf G}raph {\bf N}eural {\bf N}etwork model, which can model the dynamic information as the graph evolving. In particular, the proposed framework can keep updating node information by capturing the sequential information of edges, the time intervals between edges and information propagation coherently. Experimental results on various dynamic graphs demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
