The need to develop systems that exploit multi and many-core architectures to reduce wasteful heat generation is of utmost importance in compute-intensive applications. We propose an energy-conscious approach to multicore scheduling known as non-preemptive dynamic window (NPDW) scheduling that achieves effective load and temperature balancing over chip multiprocessors. NPDW utilizes the concept of dynamic time windows to accumulate tasks and find an optimal stable matching between accumulated tasks and available processor cores using a modified Gale-Shapely algorithm. The metrics of window and matching performance are defined to create a dynamic window heuristic to determine the next time window size based on the current and previous window sizes. Based on derived formulation and experimental results, we show that our NPDW scheduler is able to distribute the computational and thermal load throughout the processors in a multicore environment better than baseline schedulers. We believe that within multicore compute applications requiring temperature and energy-conscious system design, our scheduler may be employed to effectively disperse system load and prevent excess core heating.

This paper investigates a new downlink nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where a multiantenna unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is powered by wireless power transfer (WPT) and serves as the base station for multiple pairs of ground users (GUs) running NOMA in each pair. An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the WPT time and the placement for the UAV, and the allocation of the UAV's transmit power between different NOMA user pairs and within each pair. To efficiently solve this nonconvex problem, we decompose the problem into three subproblems using block coordinate descent. For the subproblem of intra-pair power allocation within each NOMA user pair, we construct a supermodular game with confirmed convergence to a Nash equilibrium. Given the intra-pair power allocation, successive convex approximation is applied to convexify and solve the subproblem of WPT time allocation and inter-pair power allocation between the user pairs. Finally, we solve the subproblem of UAV placement by using the Lagrange multiplier method. Simulations show that our approach can substantially outperform its alternatives that do not use NOMA and WPT techniques or that do not optimize the UAV location.

When IP-packet processing is unconditionally carried out on behalf of an operating system kernel thread, processing systems can experience overload in high incoming traffic scenarios. This is especially worrying for embedded real-time devices controlling their physical environment in industrial IoT scenarios and automotive systems. We propose an embedded real-time aware IP stack adaption with an early demultiplexing scheme for incoming packets and subsequent per-flow aperiodic scheduling. By instrumenting existing embedded IP stacks, rigid prioritization with minimal latency is deployed without the need of further task resources. Simple mitigation techniques can be applied to individual flows, causing hardly measurable overhead while at the same time protecting the system from overload conditions. Our IP stack adaption is able to reduce the low-priority packet processing time by over 86% compared to an unmodified stack. The network subsystem can thereby remain active at a 7x higher general traffic load before disabling the receive IRQ as a last resort to assure deadlines.

Network-aware cascade size prediction aims to predict the final reposted number of user-generated information via modeling the propagation process in social networks. Estimating the user's reposting probability by social influence, namely state activation plays an important role in the information diffusion process. Therefore, Graph Neural Networks (GNN), which can simulate the information interaction between nodes, has been proved as an effective scheme to handle this prediction task. However, existing studies including GNN-based models usually neglect a vital factor of user's preference which influences the state activation deeply. To that end, we propose a novel framework to promote cascade size prediction by enhancing the user preference modeling according to three stages, i.e., preference topics generation, preference shift modeling, and social influence activation. Our end-to-end method makes the user activating process of information diffusion more adaptive and accurate. Extensive experiments on two large-scale real-world datasets have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed model compared to state-of-the-art baselines.

Spectral efficiency improvement is a key focus in most wireless communication systems and achieved by various means such as using large antenna arrays and/or advanced modulation schemes and signal formats. This work proposes to further improve spectral efficiency through combining non-orthogonal spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) systems with index modulation (IM), which can efficiently make use of the indices of activated subcarriers as communication information. Recent research has verified that IM may be used with SEFDM to alleviate inter-carrier interference (ICI) and improve error performance. This work proposes new SEFDM signal formats based on novel activation pattern designs, which limit the locations of activated subcarriers and enable a variable number of activated subcarriers in each SEFDM subblock. SEFDM-IM system designs are developed by jointly considering activation patterns, modulation schemes and signal waveform formats, with a set of solutions evaluated under different spectral efficiency scenarios. Detailed modelling of coded systems and simulation studies reveal that the proposed designs not only lead to better bit error rate (BER) but also lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and reduced computational complexity relative to other reported index-modulated systems.

Classification methods for binary (yes/no) tasks often produce a continuously valued score. Machine learning practitioners must perform model selection, calibration, discretization, performance assessment, tuning, and fairness assessment. Such tasks involve examining classifier results, typically using summary statistics and manual examination of details. In this paper, we provide an interactive visualization approach to support such continuously-valued classifier examination tasks. Our approach addresses the three phases of these tasks: calibration, operating point selection, and examination. We enhance standard views and introduce task-specific views so that they can be integrated into a multi-view coordination (MVC) system. We build on an existing comparison-based approach, extending it to continuous classifiers by treating the continuous values as trinary (positive, unsure, negative) even if the classifier will not ultimately use the 3-way classification. We provide use cases that demonstrate how our approach enables machine learning practitioners to accomplish key tasks.

We study dynamic algorithms for the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function over a stream of $n$ insertions and deletions. We show that any algorithm that maintains a $(0.5+\epsilon)$-approximate solution under a cardinality constraint, for any constant $\epsilon>0$, must have an amortized query complexity that is $\mathit{polynomial}$ in $n$. Moreover, a linear amortized query complexity is needed in order to maintain a $0.584$-approximate solution. This is in sharp contrast with recent dynamic algorithms of [LMNF+20, Mon20] that achieve $(0.5-\epsilon)$-approximation with a $\mathsf{poly}\log(n)$ amortized query complexity. On the positive side, when the stream is insertion-only, we present efficient algorithms for the problem under a cardinality constraint and under a matroid constraint with approximation guarantee $1-1/e-\epsilon$ and amortized query complexities $\smash{O(\log (k/\epsilon)/\epsilon^2)}$ and $\smash{k^{\tilde{O}(1/\epsilon^2)}\log n}$, respectively, where $k$ denotes the cardinality parameter or the rank of the matroid.

Coflow is a network abstraction used to represent communication patterns in data centers. The coflow scheduling problem in large data centers is one of the most important $NP$-hard problems. Many previous studies on coflow scheduling mainly focus on the single-core model. However, with the growth of data centers, this single-core model is no longer sufficient. This paper considers the coflow scheduling problem in heterogeneous parallel networks. The heterogeneous parallel network is an architecture based on multiple network cores running in parallel. In this paper, two polynomial-time approximation algorithms are developed for scheduling divisible and indivisible coflows in heterogeneous parallel networks, respectively. Both algorithms achieve an approximation ratio of $O(\log m/ \log \log m)$ with arbitrary release times.

The increase and rapid growth of data produced by scientific instruments, the Internet of Things (IoT), and social media is causing data transfer performance and resource consumption to garner much attention in the research community. The network infrastructure and end systems that enable this extensive data movement use a substantial amount of electricity, measured in terawatt-hours per year. Managing energy consumption within the core networking infrastructure is an active research area, but there is a limited amount of work on reducing power consumption at the end systems during active data transfers. This paper presents a novel two-phase dynamic throughput and energy optimization model that utilizes an offline decision-search-tree based clustering technique to encapsulate and categorize historical data transfer log information and an online search optimization algorithm to find the best application and kernel layer parameter combination to maximize the achieved data transfer throughput while minimizing the energy consumption. Our model also incorporates an ensemble method to reduce aleatoric uncertainty in finding optimal application and kernel layer parameters during the offline analysis phase. The experimental evaluation results show that our decision-tree based model outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions in this area by achieving 117% higher throughput on average and also consuming 19% less energy at the end systems during active data transfers.

We present a pipelined multiplier with reduced activities and minimized interconnect based on online digit-serial arithmetic. The working precision has been truncated such that $p<n$ bits are used to compute $n$ bits product, resulting in significant savings in area and power. The digit slices follow variable precision according to input, increasing upto $p$ and then decreases according to the error profile. Pipelining has been done to achieve high throughput and low latency which is desirable for compute intensive inner products. Synthesis results of the proposed designs have been presented and compared with the non-pipelined online multiplier, pipelined online multiplier with full working precision and conventional serial-parallel and array multipliers. For $8, 16, 24$ and $32$ bit precision, the proposed low power pipelined design show upto $38\%$ and $44\%$ reduction in power and area respectively compared to the pipelined online multiplier without working precision truncation.
