We are interested in the high-order approximation of anisotropic advection-diffusion problems on general polytopal partitions. We study two hybrid schemes, both built upon the Hybrid High-Order technology. The first one hinges on exponential fitting and is linear, whereas the second is nonlinear. The existence of solutions is established for both schemes. Both schemes are also shown to enjoy a discrete entropy structure, ensuring that the discrete long-time behaviour of solutions mimics the PDE one. The nonlinear scheme is designed so as to enforce the positivity of discrete solutions. On the contrary, we display numerical evidence indicating that the linear scheme violates positivity, whatever the order. Finally, we verify numerically that the nonlinear scheme has optimal order of convergence, expected long-time behaviour, and that raising the polynomial degree results, also in the nonlinear case, in an efficiency gain.

We present a rigorous and precise analysis of the maximum degree and the average degree in a dynamic duplication-divergence graph model introduced by Sol\'e, Pastor-Satorras et al. in which the graph grows according to a duplication-divergence mechanism, i.e. by iteratively creating a copy of some node and then randomly alternating the neighborhood of a new node with probability $p$. This model captures the growth of some real-world processes e.g. biological or social networks. In this paper, we prove that for some $0 < p < 1$ the maximum degree and the average degree of a duplication-divergence graph on $t$ vertices are asymptotically concentrated with high probability around $t^p$ and $\max\{t^{2 p - 1}, 1\}$, respectively, i.e. they are within at most a polylogarithmic factor from these values with probability at least $1 - t^{-A}$ for any constant $A > 0$.

Many imaging science tasks can be modeled as a discrete linear inverse problem. Solving linear inverse problems is often challenging, with ill-conditioned operators and potentially non-unique solutions. Embedding prior knowledge, such as smoothness, into the solution can overcome these challenges. In this work, we encode prior knowledge using a non-negative patch dictionary, which effectively learns a basis from a training set of natural images. In this dictionary basis, we desire solutions that are non-negative and sparse (i.e., contain many zero entries). With these constraints, standard methods for solving discrete linear inverse problems are not directly applicable. One such approach is the modified residual norm steepest descent (MRNSD), which produces non-negative solutions but does not induce sparsity. In this paper, we provide two methods based on MRNSD that promote sparsity. In our first method, we add an $\ell_1$-regularization term with a new, optimal step size. In our second method, we propose a new non-negative, sparsity-promoting mapping of the solution. We compare the performance of our proposed methods on a number of numerical experiments, including deblurring, image completion, computer tomography, and superresolution. Our results show that these methods effectively solve discrete linear inverse problems with non-negativity and sparsity constraints.

Quadratization of polynomial and nonpolynomial systems of ordinary differential equations is advantageous in a variety of disciplines, such as systems theory, fluid mechanics, chemical reaction modeling and mathematical analysis. A quadratization reveals new variables and structures of a model, which may be easier to analyze, simulate, control, and provides a convenient parametrization for learning. This paper presents novel theory, algorithms and software capabilities for quadratization of non-autonomous ODEs. We provide existence results, depending on the regularity of the input function, for cases when a quadratic-bilinear system can be obtained through quadratization. We further develop existence results and an algorithm that generalizes the process of quadratization for systems with arbitrary dimension that retain the nonlinear structure when the dimension grows. For such systems, we provide dimension-agnostic quadratization. An example is semi-discretized PDEs, where the nonlinear terms remain symbolically identical when the discretization size increases. As an important aspect for practical adoption of this research, we extended the capabilities of the QBee software towards both non-autonomous systems of ODEs and ODEs with arbitrary dimension. We present several examples of ODEs that were previously reported in the literature, and where our new algorithms find quadratized ODE systems with lower dimension than the previously reported lifting transformations. We further highlight an important area of quadratization: reduced-order model learning. This area can benefit significantly from working in the optimal lifting variables, where quadratic models provide a direct parametrization of the model that also avoids additional hyperreduction for the nonlinear terms. A solar wind example highlights these advantages.

We note a fact that stiff systems or differential equations that have highly oscillatory solutions cannot be solved efficiently using conventional methods. In this paper, we study two new classes of exponential Runge-Kutta (ERK) integrators for efficiently solving stiff systems or highly oscillatory problems. We first present a novel class of explicit modified version of exponential Runge-Kutta (MVERK) methods based on the order conditions. Furthermore, we consider a class of explicit simplified version of exponential Runge-Kutta (SVERK) methods. Numerical results demonstrate the high efficiency of the explicit MVERK integrators and SVERK methods derived in this paper compared with the well-known explicit ERK integrators for stiff systems or highly oscillatory problems in the literature.

Regularization is a long-standing challenge for ill-posed linear inverse problems, and a prototype is the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind with additive Gaussian measurement noise. We introduce a new RKHS regularization adaptive to measurement data and the underlying linear operator. This RKHS arises naturally in a variational approach, and its closure is the function space in which we can identify the true solution. Also, we introduce a small noise analysis to compare regularization norms by sharp convergence rates in the small noise limit. Our analysis shows that the RKHS- and $L^2$-regularizers yield the same convergence rate when their optimal hyper-parameters are selected using the true solution, and the RKHS-regularizer has a smaller multiplicative constant. However, in computational practice, the RKHS regularizer significantly outperforms the $L^2$-and $l^2$-regularizers in producing consistently converging estimators when the noise level decays or the observation mesh refines.

We present a finite element approach for diffusion problems with thermal fluctuations based on a fluctuating hydrodynamics model. The governing transport equations are stochastic partial differential equations with a fluctuating forcing term. We propose a discrete formulation of the stochastic forcing term that has the correct covariance matrix up to a standard discretization error. Furthermore, to obtain a numerical solution with spatial correlations that converge to those of the continuum equation, we derive a linear mapping to transform the finite element solution into an equivalent discrete solution that is free from the artificial correlations introduced by the spatial discretization. The method is validated by applying it to two diffusion problems: a second-order diffusion equation and a fourth-order diffusion equation. The theoretical (continuum) solution to the first case presents spatially decorrelated fluctuations, while the second case presents fluctuations correlated over a finite length. In both cases, the numerical solution presents a structure factor that approximates well the continuum one.

We propose a method for computing the Lyapunov exponents of renewal equations (delay equations of Volterra type) and of coupled systems of renewal and delay differential equations. The method consists in the reformulation of the delay equation as an abstract differential equation, the reduction of the latter to a system of ordinary differential equations via pseudospectral collocation, and the application of the standard discrete QR method. The effectiveness of the method is shown experimentally and a MATLAB implementation is provided.

We propose a new randomized method for solving systems of nonlinear equations, which can find sparse solutions or solutions under certain simple constraints. The scheme only takes gradients of component functions and uses Bregman projections onto the solution space of a Newton equation. In the special case of euclidean projections, the method is known as nonlinear Kaczmarz method. Furthermore, if the component functions are nonnegative, we are in the setting of optimization under the interpolation assumption and the method reduces to SGD with the recently proposed stochastic Polyak step size. For general Bregman projections, our method is a stochastic mirror descent with a novel adaptive step size. We prove that in the convex setting each iteration of our method results in a smaller Bregman distance to exact solutions as compared to the standard Polyak step. Our generalization to Bregman projections comes with the price that a convex one-dimensional optimization problem needs to be solved in each iteration. This can typically be done with globalized Newton iterations. Convergence is proved in two classical settings of nonlinearity: for convex nonnegative functions and locally for functions which fulfill the tangential cone condition. Finally, we show examples in which the proposed method outperforms similar methods with the same memory requirements.

The numerical integration of stiff equations is a challenging problem that needs to be approached by specialized numerical methods. Exponential integrators form a popular class of such methods since they are provably robust to stiffness and have been successfully applied to a variety of problems. The dynamical low- \rank approximation is a recent technique for solving high-dimensional differential equations by means of low-rank approximations. However, the domain is lacking numerical methods for stiff equations since existing methods are either not robust-to-stiffness or have unreasonably large hidden constants. In this paper, we focus on solving large-scale stiff matrix differential equations with a Sylvester-like structure, that admit good low-rank approximations. We propose two new methods that have good convergence properties, small memory footprint and that are fast to compute. The theoretical analysis shows that the new methods have order one and two, respectively. We also propose a practical implementation based on Krylov techniques. The approximation error is analyzed, leading to a priori error bounds and, therefore, a mean for choosing the size of the Krylov space. Numerical experiments are performed on several examples, confirming the theory and showing good speedup in comparison to existing techniques.

This manuscript deals with the analysis of numerical methods for the full discretization (in time and space) of the linear heat equation with Neumann boundary conditions, and it provides the reader with error estimates that are uniform in time. First, we consider the homogeneous equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions over a finite interval. Using finite differences in space and the Euler method in time, we prove that our method is of order 1 in space, uniformly in time, under a classical CFL condition, and despite its lack of consistency at the boundaries. Second, we consider the nonhomogeneous equation with nonhomogeneous Neumann boundary conditions over a finite interval. Using a tailored similar scheme, we prove that our method is also of order 1 in space, uniformly in time, under a classical CFL condition. We indicate how this numerical method allows for a new way to compute steady states of such equations when they exist. We conclude by several numerical experiments to illustrate the sharpness and relevance of our theoretical results, as well as to examine situations that do not meet the hypotheses of our theoretical results, and to illustrate how our results extend to higher dimensions.
