Reconfigurable intelligent surface has recently emerged as a promising technology for reshaping the wireless environment by leveraging massive low-cost passive elements. Prior works mainly focus on a single-layer metasurface that lacks the capability of suppressing inter-user interference. By contrast, we propose in this paper a stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM)-enabled transceiver design for multiuser multiple-input single-output downlink communications. Specifically, a SIM having a multilayer structure is deployed at the base station to perform the transmit beamforming directly in the electromagnetic wave domain. As a result, the conventional digital beamforming and high-resolution analog-to-digital converters as well as the excessive number of radio-frequency chains are fully removed, which sharply reduces the hardware cost and energy consumption, while substantially decreasing the precoding delay benefiting from the computation at the speed of light. To this end, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the sum rate of all users by jointly designing the transmit power allocated to different users and the wave-based beamforming. Finally, numerical results based on a customized alternating optimization algorithm corroborate the effectiveness of our SIM-enabled wave-based beamforming design as compared to various benchmark schemes. Most notably, the wave-based beamforming is capable of decreasing the precoding delay by eight orders of magnitude compared to its digital counterpart.

This paper is concerned with a class of DC composite optimization problems which, as an extension of the convex composite optimization problem and the DC program with nonsmooth components, often arises from robust factorization models of low-rank matrix recovery. For this class of nonconvex and nonsmooth problems, we propose an inexact linearized proximal algorithm (iLPA) which in each step computes an inexact minimizer of a strongly convex majorization constructed by the partial linearization of their objective functions. The generated iterate sequence is shown to be convergent under the Kurdyka-{\L}ojasiewicz (KL) property of a potential function, and the convergence admits a local R-linear rate if the potential function has the KL property of exponent $1/2$ at the limit point. For the latter assumption, we provide a verifiable condition by leveraging the composite structure, and clarify its relation with the regularity used for the convex composite optimization. Finally, the proposed iLPA is applied to a robust factorization model for matrix completions with outliers, DC programs with nonsmooth components, and $\ell_1$-norm exact penalty of DC constrained programs, and numerical comparison with the existing algorithms confirms the superiority of our iLPA in computing time and quality of solutions.

We introduce a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to jointly optimize transmit beamforming and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) phase shifts in a multiuser multiple input single output (MU-MISO) system to maximize the sum downlink rate under the phase-dependent reflection amplitude model. Our approach addresses the challenge of imperfect channel state information (CSI) and hardware impairments by considering a practical RIS amplitude model. We compare the performance of our approach against a vanilla DRL agent in two scenarios: perfect CSI and phase-dependent RIS amplitudes, and mismatched CSI and ideal RIS reflections. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms the vanilla DRL agent under mismatch and approaches the golden standard. Our contributions include modifications to the DRL approach to address the joint design of transmit beamforming and phase shifts and the phase-dependent amplitude model. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first DRL-based approach for the phase-dependent reflection amplitude model in RIS-aided MU-MISO systems. Our findings in this study highlight the potential of our approach as a promising solution to overcome hardware impairments in RIS-aided wireless communication systems.

Substantially increasing wireless traffic and extending serving coverage is required with the advent of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication networks. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is widely considered as a promising technique which is capable of improving the system sum rate and energy efficiency. Moreover, full-duplex (FD) multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) transmission provides simultaneous transmit and received signals, which theoretically provides twice of spectrum efficiency. However, the self-interference (SI) in FD system is a challenging task requiring high-overhead cancellation, which can be resolved by configuring appropriate phase shifts of RIS. This paper has proposed an RIS-empowered full-duplex interference cancellation (RFIC) scheme in order to alleviate the severe interference in an RIS-FD system. We consider the interference minimization of RIS-FD MIMO while guaranteeing quality-of-service (QoS) of whole system. The closed-form solution of RIS phase shifts is theoretically derived with the discussion of different numbers of RIS elements and receiving antennas. Simulation results reveal that the proposed RFIC scheme outperforms existing benchmarks with more than 50% of performance gain of sum rate.

In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain is a promising technology for improving the efficiency of healthcare systems, as it enables secure storage, management, and sharing of real-time health data collected by the IoT devices. As the implementations of blockchain-based healthcare systems usually involve multiple conflicting metrics, it is essential to balance them according to the requirements of specific scenarios. In this paper, we formulate a joint optimization model with three metrics, namely latency, security, and computational cost, that are particularly important for IoT-enabled healthcare. However, it is computationally intractable to identify the exact optimal solution of this problem for practical sized systems. Thus, we propose an algorithm called the Adaptive Discrete Particle Swarm Algorithm (ADPSA) to obtain near-optimal solutions in a low-complexity manner. With its roots in the classical Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, our proposed ADPSA can effectively manage the numerous binary and integer variables in the formulation. We demonstrate by extensive numerical experiments that the ADPSA consistently outperforms existing benchmark approaches, including the original PSO, exhaustive search and Simulated Annealing, in a wide range of scenarios.

Multiple robots could perceive a scene (e.g., detect objects) collaboratively better than individuals, although easily suffer from adversarial attacks when using deep learning. This could be addressed by the adversarial defense, but its training requires the often-unknown attacking mechanism. Differently, we propose ROBOSAC, a novel sampling-based defense strategy generalizable to unseen attackers. Our key idea is that collaborative perception should lead to consensus rather than dissensus in results compared to individual perception. This leads to our hypothesize-and-verify framework: perception results with and without collaboration from a random subset of teammates are compared until reaching a consensus. In such a framework, more teammates in the sampled subset often entail better perception performance but require longer sampling time to reject potential attackers. Thus, we derive how many sampling trials are needed to ensure the desired size of an attacker-free subset, or equivalently, the maximum size of such a subset that we can successfully sample within a given number of trials. We validate our method on the task of collaborative 3D object detection in autonomous driving scenarios.

With the remarkable empirical success of neural networks across diverse scientific disciplines, rigorous error and convergence analysis are also being developed and enriched. However, there has been little theoretical work focusing on neural networks in solving interface problems. In this paper, we perform a convergence analysis of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for solving second-order elliptic interface problems. Specifically, we consider PINNs with domain decomposition technologies and introduce gradient-enhanced strategies on the interfaces to deal with boundary and interface jump conditions. It is shown that the neural network sequence obtained by minimizing a Lipschitz regularized loss function converges to the unique solution to the interface problem in $H^2$ as the number of samples increases. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate our theoretical analysis.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) full-duplex (FD) is a promising technique for improving capacity by maximizing the utilization of both time and the rich mmWave frequency resources. Still, it has restrictions due to FD self-interference (SI) and mmWave's limited coverage. Therefore, this study dives into FD mmWave MIMO with the assistance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for capacity improvement. First, we demonstrate the angular-domain reciprocity of FD antenna arrays under the far-field planar wavefront assumption. Accordingly, a strategy for joint downlink-uplink (DL-UL) channel estimation is presented. For estimating the SI channel, the direct channel, and the cascaded channel, the Khatri-Rao product-based compressive sensing (KR-CS), distributed CS (D-CS), and two-stage multiple measurement vector-based D-CS (M-D-CS) frameworks are proposed, respectively. Additionally, we propose a passive beamforming optimization solution based on the angular-domain cascaded channel. With hybrid beamforming architectures, a novel hybrid weighted minimum mean squared error method for SI cancellation (H-WMMSE-SIC) is proposed. Simulations have revealed that joint DL-UL processing significantly improves estimation performance in comparison to separate DL/UL channel estimation. Particularly, when the interference-to-noise ratio is less than 35 dB, our proposed H-WMMSE-SIC offers spectral efficiency performance comparable to fully-digital WMMSE-SIC. Finally, the computational complexity is analyzed for our proposed methods.

Cross-domain NER is a challenging task to address the low-resource problem in practical scenarios. Previous typical solutions mainly obtain a NER model by pre-trained language models (PLMs) with data from a rich-resource domain and adapt it to the target domain. Owing to the mismatch issue among entity types in different domains, previous approaches normally tune all parameters of PLMs, ending up with an entirely new NER model for each domain. Moreover, current models only focus on leveraging knowledge in one general source domain while failing to successfully transfer knowledge from multiple sources to the target. To address these issues, we introduce Collaborative Domain-Prefix Tuning for cross-domain NER (CP-NER) based on text-to-text generative PLMs. Specifically, we present text-to-text generation grounding domain-related instructors to transfer knowledge to new domain NER tasks without structural modifications. We utilize frozen PLMs and conduct collaborative domain-prefix tuning to stimulate the potential of PLMs to handle NER tasks across various domains. Experimental results on the Cross-NER benchmark show that the proposed approach has flexible transfer ability and performs better on both one-source and multiple-source cross-domain NER tasks. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm enabled edge computing is envisioned to be promising in the sixth generation wireless communication networks due to their wide application sensories and flexible deployment. However, most of the existing works focus on edge computing enabled by a single or a small scale UAVs, which are very different from UAV swarm-enabled edge computing. In order to facilitate the practical applications of UAV swarm-enabled edge computing, the state of the art research is presented in this article. The potential applications, architectures and implementation considerations are illustrated. Moreover, the promising enabling technologies for UAV swarm-enabled edge computing are discussed. Furthermore, we outline challenges and open issues in order to shed light on the future research directions.

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging, privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm, drawing tremendous attention in both academia and industry. A unique characteristic of FL is heterogeneity, which resides in the various hardware specifications and dynamic states across the participating devices. Theoretically, heterogeneity can exert a huge influence on the FL training process, e.g., causing a device unavailable for training or unable to upload its model updates. Unfortunately, these impacts have never been systematically studied and quantified in existing FL literature. In this paper, we carry out the first empirical study to characterize the impacts of heterogeneity in FL. We collect large-scale data from 136k smartphones that can faithfully reflect heterogeneity in real-world settings. We also build a heterogeneity-aware FL platform that complies with the standard FL protocol but with heterogeneity in consideration. Based on the data and the platform, we conduct extensive experiments to compare the performance of state-of-the-art FL algorithms under heterogeneity-aware and heterogeneity-unaware settings. Results show that heterogeneity causes non-trivial performance degradation in FL, including up to 9.2% accuracy drop, 2.32x lengthened training time, and undermined fairness. Furthermore, we analyze potential impact factors and find that device failure and participant bias are two potential factors for performance degradation. Our study provides insightful implications for FL practitioners. On the one hand, our findings suggest that FL algorithm designers consider necessary heterogeneity during the evaluation. On the other hand, our findings urge system providers to design specific mechanisms to mitigate the impacts of heterogeneity.
