Humans can effortlessly perform very complex, dexterous manipulation tasks by reacting to sensor observations. In contrast, robots can not perform reactive manipulation and they mostly operate in open-loop while interacting with their environment. Consequently, the current manipulation algorithms either are inefficient in performance or can only work in highly structured environments. In this paper, we present closed-loop control of a complex manipulation task where a robot uses a tool to interact with objects. Manipulation using a tool leads to complex kinematics and contact constraints that need to be satisfied for generating feasible manipulation trajectories. We first present an open-loop controller design using Non-Linear Programming (NLP) that satisfies these constraints. In order to design a closed-loop controller, we present a pose estimator of objects and tools using tactile sensors. Using our tactile estimator, we design a closed-loop controller based on Model Predictive Control (MPC). The proposed algorithm is verified using a 6 DoF manipulator on tasks using a variety of objects and tools. We verify that our closed-loop controller can successfully perform tool manipulation under several unexpected contacts. Collaborative robots can relief human operators from excessive efforts during payload lifting activities. Modelling the human partner allows the design of safe and efficient collaborative strategies. In this paper, we present a control approach for human-robot collaboration based on human monitoring through whole-body wearable sensors, and interaction modelling through coupled rigid-body dynamics. Moreover, a trajectory advancement strategy is proposed, allowing for online adaptation of the robot trajectory depending on the human motion. The resulting framework allows us to perform payload lifting tasks, taking into account the ergonomic requirements of the agents. Validation has been performed in an experimental scenario using the iCub3 humanoid robot and a human subject sensorized with the iFeel wearable system.

This letter addresses the problem of trajectory planning in a marsupial robotic system consisting of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) linked to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) through a non-taut tether with controllable length. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that addresses the trajectory planning of a marsupial UGV-UAV with a non-taut tether. The objective is to determine a synchronized collision-free trajectory for the three marsupial system agents: UAV, UGV, and tether. First, we present a path planning solution based on optimal Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT*) with novel sampling and steering techniques to speed-up the computation. This algorithm is able to obtain collision-free paths for the UAV and the UGV, taking into account the 3D environment and the tether. Then, the letter presents a trajectory planner based on non-linear least squares. The optimizer takes into account aspects not considered in the path planning, like temporal constraints of the motion imposed by limits on the velocities and accelerations of the robots, or raising the tether's clearance. Simulated and field test results demonstrate that the approach generates obstacle-free, smooth, and feasible trajectories for the marsupial system.

We present a robot base placement and control method that enables a mobile manipulator to gracefully recover from manipulation failures while performing tasks on-the-move. A mobile manipulator in motion has a limited window to complete a task, unlike when stationary where it can make repeated attempts until successful. Existing approaches to manipulation on-the-move are typically based on open-loop execution of planned trajectories which does not allow the base controller to react to manipulation failures, slowing down or stopping as required. To overcome this limitation, we present a reactive base control method that repeatedly evaluates the best base placement given the robot's current state, the immediate manipulation task, as well as the next part of a multi-step task. The result is a system that retains the reliability of traditional mobile manipulation approaches where the base comes to a stop, but leverages the performance gains available by performing manipulation on-the-move. The controller keeps the base in range of the target for as long as required to recover from manipulation failures while making as much progress as possible toward the next objective. Despite the tremendous success of Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms in simulation environments, applying RL to real-world applications still faces many challenges. A major concern is safety, in another word, constraint satisfaction. State-wise constraints are one of the most common constraints in real-world applications and one of the most challenging constraints in Safe RL. Enforcing state-wise constraints is necessary and essential to many challenging tasks such as autonomous driving, robot manipulation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing approaches that address state-wise constraints in RL. Under the framework of State-wise Constrained Markov Decision Process (SCMDP), we will discuss the connections, differences, and trade-offs of existing approaches in terms of (i) safety guarantee and scalability, (ii) safety and reward performance, and (iii) safety after convergence and during training. We also summarize limitations of current methods and discuss potential future directions.

Safety is often the most important requirement in robotics applications. Nonetheless, control techniques that can provide safety guarantees are still extremely rare for nonlinear systems, such as robot manipulators. A well-known tool to ensure safety is the Viability kernel, which is the largest set of states from which safety can be ensured. Unfortunately, computing such a set for a nonlinear system is extremely challenging in general. Several numerical algorithms for approximating it have been proposed in the literature, but they suffer from the curse of dimensionality. This paper presents a new approach for numerically approximating the viability kernel of robot manipulators. Our approach solves optimal control problems to compute states that are guaranteed to be on the boundary of the set. This allows us to learn directly the set boundary, therefore learning in a smaller dimensional space. Compared to the state of the art on systems up to dimension 6, our algorithm resulted to be more than 2 times as accurate for the same computation time, or 6 times as fast to reach the same accuracy.

Assistive robotic manipulators are becoming increasingly important for people with disabilities. Teleoperating the manipulator in mundane tasks is part of their daily lives. Instead of steering the robot through all actions, applying self-recorded motion macros could greatly facilitate repetitive tasks. Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) are a powerful method for skill learning via teleoperation. For this use case, however, they need simple heuristics to specify where to start, stop, and parameterize a skill without a background in computer science and academic sensor setups for autonomous perception. To achieve this goal, this paper provides the concept of local, global, and hybrid skills that form a modular basis for composing single-handed tasks of daily living. These skills are specified implicitly and can easily be programmed by users themselves, requiring only their basic robotic manipulator. The paper contributes all details for robot-agnostic implementations. Experiments validate the developed methods for exemplary tasks, such as scratching an itchy spot, sorting objects on a desk, and feeding a piggy bank with coins. Manual oropharyngeal (OP) swab sampling is an intensive and risky task. In this article, a novel OP swab sampling device of low cost and high compliance is designed by combining the visuo-tactile sensor and the pneumatic actuator-based gripper. Here, a concave visuo-tactile sensor called CoTac is first proposed to address the problems of high cost and poor reliability of traditional multi-axis force sensors. Besides, by imitating the doctor's fingers, a soft pneumatic actuator with a rigid skeleton structure is designed, which is demonstrated to be reliable and safe via finite element modeling and experiments. Furthermore, we propose a sampling method that adopts a compliant control algorithm based on the adaptive virtual force to enhance the safety and compliance of the swab sampling process. The effectiveness of the device has been verified through sampling experiments as well as in vivo tests, indicating great application potential. The cost of the device is around 30 US dollars and the total weight of the functional part is less than 0.1 kg, allowing the device to be rapidly deployed on various robotic arms. Vision is a popular and effective sensor for robotics from which we can derive rich information about the environment: the geometry and semantics of the scene, as well as the age, gender, identity, activity and even emotional state of humans within that scene. This raises important questions about the reach, lifespan, and potential misuse of this information. This paper is a call to action to consider privacy in the context of robotic vision. We propose a specific form privacy preservation in which no images are captured or could be reconstructed by an attacker even with full remote access. We present a set of principles by which such systems can be designed, and through a case study in localisation demonstrate in simulation a specific implementation that delivers an important robotic capability in an inherently privacy-preserving manner. This is a first step, and we hope to inspire future works that expand the range of applications open to sighted robotic systems.

Concentric Tube Robots (CTR) have the potential to enable effective minimally invasive surgeries. While extensive modeling and control schemes have been proposed in the past decade, limited efforts have been made to improve the trajectory tracking performance from the perspective of manipulability , which can be critical to generate safe motion and feasible actuator commands. In this paper, we propose a gradient-based redundancy resolution framework that optimizes velocity/compliance manipulability-based performance indices during trajectory tracking for a kinematically redundant CTR. We efficiently calculate the gradients of manipulabilities by propagating the first- and second-order derivatives of state variables of the Cosserat rod model along the CTR arc length, reducing the gradient computation time by 68\% compared to finite difference method. Task-specific performance indices are optimized by projecting the gradient into the null-space of trajectory tracking. The proposed method is validated in three exemplary scenarios that involve trajectory tracking, obstacle avoidance, and external load compensation, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to accomplish the required tasks while commonly used redundancy resolution approaches underperform or even fail.

Adversarial attack is a technique for deceiving Machine Learning (ML) models, which provides a way to evaluate the adversarial robustness. In practice, attack algorithms are artificially selected and tuned by human experts to break a ML system. However, manual selection of attackers tends to be sub-optimal, leading to a mistakenly assessment of model security. In this paper, a new procedure called Composite Adversarial Attack (CAA) is proposed for automatically searching the best combination of attack algorithms and their hyper-parameters from a candidate pool of \textbf{32 base attackers}. We design a search space where attack policy is represented as an attacking sequence, i.e., the output of the previous attacker is used as the initialization input for successors. Multi-objective NSGA-II genetic algorithm is adopted for finding the strongest attack policy with minimum complexity. The experimental result shows CAA beats 10 top attackers on 11 diverse defenses with less elapsed time (\textbf{6 $\times$ faster than AutoAttack}), and achieves the new state-of-the-art on $l_{\infty}$, $l_{2}$ and unrestricted adversarial attacks.
