In image dehazing task, haze density is a key feature and affects the performance of dehazing methods. However, some of the existing methods lack a comparative image to measure densities, and others create intermediate results but lack the exploitation of their density differences, which can facilitate perception of density. To address these deficiencies, we propose a density-aware dehazing method named Density Feature Refinement Network (DFR-Net) that extracts haze density features from density differences and leverages density differences to refine density features. In DFR-Net, we first generate a proposal image that has lower overall density than the hazy input, bringing in global density differences. Additionally, the dehazing residual of the proposal image reflects the level of dehazing performance and provides local density differences that indicate localized hard dehazing or high density areas. Subsequently, we introduce a Global Branch (GB) and a Local Branch (LB) to achieve density-awareness. In GB, we use Siamese networks for feature extraction of hazy inputs and proposal images, and we propose a Global Density Feature Refinement (GDFR) module that can refine features by pushing features with different global densities further away. In LB, we explore local density features from the dehazing residuals between hazy inputs and proposal images and introduce an Intermediate Dehazing Residual Feedforward (IDRF) module to update local features and pull them closer to clear image features. Sufficient experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves results beyond the state-of-the-art methods on various datasets.
Monocular depth estimation is an ill-posed problem as the same 2D image can be projected from infinite 3D scenes. Although the leading algorithms in this field have reported significant improvement, they are essentially geared to the particular compound of pictorial observations and camera parameters (i.e., intrinsics and extrinsics), strongly limiting their generalizability in real-world scenarios. To cope with this challenge, this paper proposes a novel ground embedding module to decouple camera parameters from pictorial cues, thus promoting the generalization capability. Given camera parameters, the proposed module generates the ground depth, which is stacked with the input image and referenced in the final depth prediction. A ground attention is designed in the module to optimally combine ground depth with residual depth. Our ground embedding is highly flexible and lightweight, leading to a plug-in module that is amenable to be integrated into various depth estimation networks. Experiments reveal that our approach achieves the state-of-the-art results on popular benchmarks, and more importantly, renders significant generalization improvement on a wide range of cross-domain tests.
Developing embodied agents in simulation has been a key research topic in recent years. Exciting new tasks, algorithms, and benchmarks have been developed in various simulators. However, most of them assume deaf agents in silent environments, while we humans perceive the world with multiple senses. We introduce Sonicverse, a multisensory simulation platform with integrated audio-visual simulation for training household agents that can both see and hear. Sonicverse models realistic continuous audio rendering in 3D environments in real-time. Together with a new audio-visual VR interface that allows humans to interact with agents with audio, Sonicverse enables a series of embodied AI tasks that need audio-visual perception. For semantic audio-visual navigation in particular, we also propose a new multi-task learning model that achieves state-of-the-art performance. In addition, we demonstrate Sonicverse's realism via sim-to-real transfer, which has not been achieved by other simulators: an agent trained in Sonicverse can successfully perform audio-visual navigation in real-world environments. In recent years, two time series classification models, ROCKET and MINIROCKET, have attracted much attention for their low training cost and state-of-the-art accuracy. Utilizing random 1-D convolutional kernels without training, ROCKET and MINIROCKET can rapidly extract features from time series data, allowing for the efficient fitting of linear classifiers. However, to comprehensively capture useful features, a large number of random kernels are required, which is incompatible for resource-constrained devices. Therefore, a heuristic evolutionary algorithm named S-ROCKET is devised to recognize and prune redundant kernels. Nevertheless, the inherent nature of evolutionary algorithms renders the evaluation of kernels within S-ROCKET an unacceptable time-consuming process. In this paper, diverging from S-ROCKET, which directly evaluates random kernels with nonsignificant differences, we remove kernels from a feature selection perspective by eliminating associating connections in the sequential classification layer. To this end, we start by formulating the pruning challenge as a Group Elastic Net classification problem and employ the ADMM method to arrive at a solution. Sequentially, we accelerate the aforementioned time-consuming solving process by bifurcating the $l_{2,1}$ and $l_2$ regularizations into two sequential stages and solve them separately, which ultimately forms our core algorithm, named P-ROCKET. Stage 1 of P-ROCKET employs group-wise regularization similarly to our initial ADMM-based Algorithm, but introduces dynamically varying penalties to greatly accelerate the process. To mitigate overfitting, Stage 2 of P-ROCKET implements element-wise regularization to refit a linear classifier, utilizing the retained features.
Image cartoonization has attracted significant interest in the field of image generation. However, most of the existing image cartoonization techniques require re-training models using images of cartoon style. In this paper, we present CartoonDiff, a novel training-free sampling approach which generates image cartoonization using diffusion transformer models. Specifically, we decompose the reverse process of diffusion models into the semantic generation phase and the detail generation phase. Furthermore, we implement the image cartoonization process by normalizing high-frequency signal of the noisy image in specific denoising steps. CartoonDiff doesn't require any additional reference images, complex model designs, or the tedious adjustment of multiple parameters. We introduce a multilingual speaker change detection model (USM-SCD) that can simultaneously detect speaker turns and perform ASR for 96 languages. This model is adapted from a speech foundation model trained on a large quantity of supervised and unsupervised data, demonstrating the utility of fine-tuning from a large generic foundation model for a downstream task. We analyze the performance of this multilingual speaker change detection model through a series of ablation studies. We show that the USM-SCD model can achieve more than 75% average speaker change detection F1 score across a test set that consists of data from 96 languages. On American English, the USM-SCD model can achieve an 85.8% speaker change detection F1 score across various public and internal test sets, beating the previous monolingual baseline model by 21% relative. We also show that we only need to fine-tune one-quarter of the trainable model parameters to achieve the best model performance. The USM-SCD model exhibits state-of-the-art ASR quality compared with a strong public ASR baseline, making it suitable to handle both tasks with negligible additional computational cost.
Traffic sign detection is an important research direction in intelligent driving. Unfortunately, existing methods often overlook extreme conditions such as fog, rain, and motion blur. Moreover, the end-to-end training strategy for image denoising and object detection models fails to utilize inter-model information effectively. To address these issues, we propose CCSPNet, an efficient feature extraction module based on Transformers and CNNs, which effectively leverages contextual information, achieves faster inference speed and provides stronger feature enhancement capabilities. Furthermore, we establish the correlation between object detection and image denoising tasks and propose a joint training model, CCSPNet-Joint, to improve data efficiency and generalization. Finally, to validate our approach, we create the CCTSDB-AUG dataset for traffic sign detection in extreme scenarios. Extensive experiments have shown that CCSPNet achieves state-of-the-art performance in traffic sign detection under extreme conditions. Compared to end-to-end methods, CCSPNet-Joint achieves a 5.32% improvement in precision and an 18.09% improvement in [email protected].
Inverse rendering methods aim to estimate geometry, materials and illumination from multi-view RGB images. In order to achieve better decomposition, recent approaches attempt to model indirect illuminations reflected from different materials via Spherical Gaussians (SG), which, however, tends to blur the high-frequency reflection details. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end inverse rendering pipeline that decomposes materials and illumination from multi-view images, while considering near-field indirect illumination. In a nutshell, we introduce the Monte Carlo sampling based path tracing and cache the indirect illumination as neural radiance, enabling a physics-faithful and easy-to-optimize inverse rendering method. To enhance efficiency and practicality, we leverage SG to represent the smooth environment illuminations and apply importance sampling techniques. To supervise indirect illuminations from unobserved directions, we develop a novel radiance consistency constraint between implicit neural radiance and path tracing results of unobserved rays along with the joint optimization of materials and illuminations, thus significantly improving the decomposition performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on multiple synthetic and real datasets, especially in terms of inter-reflection decomposition.Our code and data are available at //woolseyyy.github.io/nefii/.
Most dynamics functions are not well-aligned to task requirements. Controllers, therefore, often invert the dynamics and reshape it into something more useful. The learning community has found that these controllers, such as Operational Space Control (OSC), can offer important inductive biases for training. However, OSC only captures straight line end-effector motion. There's a lot more behavior we could and should be packing into these systems. Earlier work [15][16][19] developed a theory that generalized these ideas and constructed a broad and flexible class of second-order dynamical systems which was simultaneously expressive enough to capture substantial behavior (such as that listed above), and maintained the types of stability properties that make OSC and controllers like it a good foundation for policy design and learning. This paper, motivated by the empirical success of the types of fabrics used in [20], reformulates the theory of fabrics into a form that's more general and easier to apply to policy learning problems. We focus on the stability properties that make fabrics a good foundation for policy synthesis. Fabrics create a fundamentally stable medium within which a policy can operate; they influence the system's behavior without preventing it from achieving tasks within its constraints. When a fabrics is geometric (path consistent) we can interpret the fabric as forming a road network of paths that the system wants to follow at constant speed absent a forcing policy, giving geometric intuition to its role as a prior. The policy operating over the geometric fabric acts to modulate speed and steers the system from one road to the next as it accomplishes its task. We reformulate the theory of fabrics here rigorously and develop theoretical results characterizing system behavior and illuminating how to design these systems, while also emphasizing intuition throughout.
Answering questions that require reading texts in an image is challenging for current models. One key difficulty of this task is that rare, polysemous, and ambiguous words frequently appear in images, e.g., names of places, products, and sports teams. To overcome this difficulty, only resorting to pre-trained word embedding models is far from enough. A desired model should utilize the rich information in multiple modalities of the image to help understand the meaning of scene texts, e.g., the prominent text on a bottle is most likely to be the brand. Following this idea, we propose a novel VQA approach, Multi-Modal Graph Neural Network (MM-GNN). It first represents an image as a graph consisting of three sub-graphs, depicting visual, semantic, and numeric modalities respectively. Then, we introduce three aggregators which guide the message passing from one graph to another to utilize the contexts in various modalities, so as to refine the features of nodes. The updated nodes have better features for the downstream question answering module. Experimental evaluations show that our MM-GNN represents the scene texts better and obviously facilitates the performances on two VQA tasks that require reading scene texts.
Distant supervision can effectively label data for relation extraction, but suffers from the noise labeling problem. Recent works mainly perform soft bag-level noise reduction strategies to find the relatively better samples in a sentence bag, which is suboptimal compared with making a hard decision of false positive samples in sentence level. In this paper, we introduce an adversarial learning framework, which we named DSGAN, to learn a sentence-level true-positive generator. Inspired by Generative Adversarial Networks, we regard the positive samples generated by the generator as the negative samples to train the discriminator. The optimal generator is obtained until the discrimination ability of the discriminator has the greatest decline. We adopt the generator to filter distant supervision training dataset and redistribute the false positive instances into the negative set, in which way to provide a cleaned dataset for relation classification. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy significantly improves the performance of distant supervision relation extraction comparing to state-of-the-art systems.
