We are interested in pick-and-place style robot manipulation tasks in cluttered and confined 3D workspaces among movable objects that may be rearranged by the robot and may slide, tilt, lean or topple. A recently proposed algorithm, M4M, determines which objects need to be moved and where by solving a Multi-Agent Pathfinding MAPF abstraction of this problem. It then utilises a nonprehensile push planner to compute actions for how the robot might realise these rearrangements and a rigid body physics simulator to check whether the actions satisfy physics constraints encoded in the problem. However, M4M greedily commits to valid pushes found during planning, and does not reason about orderings over pushes if multiple objects need to be rearranged. Furthermore, M4M does not reason about other possible MAPF solutions that lead to different rearrangements and pushes. In this paper, we extend M4M and present Enhanced-M4M (E-M4M) -- a systematic graph search-based solver that searches over orderings of pushes for movable objects that need to be rearranged and different possible rearrangements of the scene. We introduce several algorithmic optimisations to circumvent the increased computational complexity, discuss the space of problems solvable by E-M4M and show that experimentally, both on the real robot and in simulation, it significantly outperforms the original M4M algorithm, as well as other state-of-the-art alternatives when dealing with complex scenes.

Permitting multiple materials within a topology optimization setting increases the search space of the technique, which facilitates obtaining high-performing and efficient optimized designs. Structures with multiple materials involving fluidic pressure loads find various applications. However, dealing with the design-dependent nature of the pressure loads is challenging in topology optimization that gets even more pronounced with a multi-material framework. This paper provides a density-based topology optimization method to design fluidic pressure loadbearing multi-material structures. The design domain is parameterized using hexagonal elements as they ensure nonsingular connectivity. Pressure modeling is performed using the Darcy law with a conceptualized drainage term. The flow coefficient of each element is determined using a smooth Heaviside function considering its solid and void states. The consistent nodal loads are determined using the standard finite element methods. Multiple materials is modeled using the extended SIMP scheme. Compliance minimization with volume constraints is performed to achieve optimized loadbearing structures. Few examples are presented to demonstrate the efficacy and versatility of the proposed approach. The optimized results contain the prescribed amount of different materials.

With the aim of further enabling the exploitation of intentional impacts in robotic manipulation, a control framework is presented that directly tackles the challenges posed by tracking control of robotic manipulators that are tasked to perform nominally simultaneous impacts. This framework is an extension of the reference spreading control framework, in which overlapping ante- and post-impact references that are consistent with impact dynamics are defined. In this work, such a reference is constructed starting from a teleoperation-based approach. By using the corresponding ante- and post-impact control modes in the scope of a quadratic programming control approach, peaking of the velocity error and control inputs due to impacts is avoided while maintaining high tracking performance. With the inclusion of a novel interim mode, we aim to also avoid input peaks and steps when uncertainty in the environment causes a series of unplanned single impacts to occur rather than the planned simultaneous impact. This work in particular presents for the first time an experimental evaluation of reference spreading control on a robotic setup, showcasing its robustness against uncertainty in the environment compared to two baseline control approaches.

This letter addresses the problem of trajectory planning in a marsupial robotic system consisting of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) linked to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) through a non-taut tether with controllable length. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that addresses the trajectory planning of a marsupial UGV-UAV with a non-taut tether. The objective is to determine a synchronized collision-free trajectory for the three marsupial system agents: UAV, UGV, and tether. First, we present a path planning solution based on optimal Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRT*) with novel sampling and steering techniques to speed-up the computation. This algorithm is able to obtain collision-free paths for the UAV and the UGV, taking into account the 3D environment and the tether. Then, the letter presents a trajectory planner based on non-linear least squares. The optimizer takes into account aspects not considered in the path planning, like temporal constraints of the motion imposed by limits on the velocities and accelerations of the robots, or raising the tether's clearance. Simulated and field test results demonstrate that the approach generates obstacle-free, smooth, and feasible trajectories for the marsupial system.

Robotic arms are widely used in automatic industries. However, with wide applications of deep learning in robotic arms, there are new challenges such as the allocation of grasping computing power and the growing demand for security. In this work, we propose a robotic arm grasping approach based on deep learning and edge-cloud collaboration. This approach realizes the arbitrary grasp planning of the robot arm and considers the grasp efficiency and information security. In addition, the encoder and decoder trained by GAN enable the images to be encrypted while compressing, which ensures the security of privacy. The model achieves 92% accuracy on the OCID dataset, the image compression ratio reaches 0.03%, and the structural difference value is higher than 0.91.

Real-time perception and motion planning are two crucial tasks for autonomous driving. While there are many research works focused on improving the performance of perception and motion planning individually, it is still not clear how a perception error may adversely impact the motion planning results. In this work, we propose a joint simulation framework with LiDAR-based perception and motion planning for real-time automated driving. Taking the sensor input from the CARLA simulator with additive noise, a LiDAR perception system is designed to detect and track all surrounding vehicles and to provide precise orientation and velocity information. Next, we introduce a new collision bound representation that relaxes the communication cost between the perception module and the motion planner. A novel collision checking algorithm is implemented using line intersection checking that is more efficient for long distance range in comparing to the traditional method of occupancy grid. We evaluate the joint simulation framework in CARLA for urban driving scenarios. Experiments show that our proposed automated driving system can execute at 25 Hz, which meets the real-time requirement. The LiDAR perception system has high accuracy within 20 meters when evaluated with the ground truth. The motion planning results in consistent safe distance keeping when tested in CARLA urban driving scenarios.

In 3D point cloud-based visual self-localization, pole landmarks have a great potential as landmarks for accurate and reliable localization due to their long-term stability under seasonal and weather changes. In this study, we aim to explore the use of recently developed deep learning models for pole classification in the context of pole landmark-based self-localization. Specifically, the proposed scheme consists of two main modules: pole map matching and pole class matching. In the former module, local pole map is constructed and its configuration is compared against a precomputed global pole map. An efficient RANSAC map matching is employed to achieve a good tradeoff between computational efficiency and accuracy. In the latter pole class matching module, the local and global poles paired by the RANSAC map-matching are further compared by means of pole attribute class. To this end, a predefined set of pseudo pole classes is learned via k-means clustering in a self-supervised manner. Experiments using publicly available NCLT dataset showed that the pole-like landmark classification method has an improved effect on the visual self-localization system compared with the baseline method.

The paper presents an algorithm, called Self- Morphing Anytime Replanning Tree (SMART), that facilitates anytime replanning in dynamic environments. SMART performs risk-based tree-pruning if its current path is obstructed by nearby moving obstacle(s), resulting in multiple disjoint subtrees. Then, for speedy recovery, it exploits these subtrees and performs informed tree-repair at hot-spots that lie at the intersection of subtrees to find a new path. The performance of SMART is comparatively evaluated with seven existing algorithms through extensive simulations. Two scenarios are considered with: 1) dynamic obstacles and 2) both static and dynamic obstacles. The results show that SMART yields significant improvements in replanning time, success rate and travel time. Finally, the performance of SMART is validated by a real laboratory experiment.

Letter-to-letter transducers are a standard formalism for modeling reactive systems. Often, two transducers that model similar systems differ locally from one another, by behaving similarly, up to permutations of the input and output letters within "rounds". In this work, we introduce and study notions of simulation by rounds and equivalence by rounds of transducers. In our setting, words are partitioned to consecutive subwords of a fixed length $k$, called rounds. Then, a transducer $\mathcal{T}_1$ is $k$-round simulated by transducer $\mathcal{T}_2$ if, intuitively, for every input word $x$, we can permute the letters within each round in $x$, such that the output of $\mathcal{T}_2$ on the permuted word is itself a permutation of the output of $\mathcal{T}_1$ on $x$. Finally, two transducers are $k$-round equivalent if they simulate each other. We solve two main decision problems, namely whether $\mathcal{T}_2$ $k$-round simulates $\mathcal{T}_1$ (1) when $k$ is given as input, and (2) for an existentially quantified $k$. We demonstrate the usefulness of the definitions by applying them to process symmetry: a setting in which a permutation in the identities of processes in a multi-process system naturally gives rise to two transducers, whose $k$-round equivalence corresponds to stability against such permutations.

The key challenge of image manipulation detection is how to learn generalizable features that are sensitive to manipulations in novel data, whilst specific to prevent false alarms on authentic images. Current research emphasizes the sensitivity, with the specificity overlooked. In this paper we address both aspects by multi-view feature learning and multi-scale supervision. By exploiting noise distribution and boundary artifact surrounding tampered regions, the former aims to learn semantic-agnostic and thus more generalizable features. The latter allows us to learn from authentic images which are nontrivial to be taken into account by current semantic segmentation network based methods. Our thoughts are realized by a new network which we term MVSS-Net. Extensive experiments on five benchmark sets justify the viability of MVSS-Net for both pixel-level and image-level manipulation detection.

We present a monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using high level object and plane landmarks, in addition to points. The resulting map is denser, more compact and meaningful compared to point only SLAM. We first propose a high order graphical model to jointly infer the 3D object and layout planes from single image considering occlusions and semantic constraints. The extracted cuboid object and layout planes are further optimized in a unified SLAM framework. Objects and planes can provide more semantic constraints such as Manhattan and object supporting relationships compared to points. Experiments on various public and collected datasets including ICL NUIM and TUM mono show that our algorithm can improve camera localization accuracy compared to state-of-the-art SLAM and also generate dense maps in many structured environments.
