Currently, existing efforts in Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have predominantly focused on enhancing the multi-label classification network stage, with limited attention given to the equally important downstream segmentation network. Furthermore, CNN-based local convolutions lack the ability to model the extensive inter-category dependencies. Therefore, this paper introduces a graph reasoning-based approach to enhance WSSS. The aim is to improve WSSS holistically by simultaneously enhancing both the multi-label classification and segmentation network stages. In the multi-label classification network segment, external knowledge is integrated, coupled with GCNs, to globally reason about inter-class dependencies. This encourages the network to uncover features in non-salient regions of images, thereby refining the completeness of generated pseudo-labels. In the segmentation network segment, the proposed Graph Reasoning Mapping (GRM) module is employed to leverage knowledge obtained from textual databases, facilitating contextual reasoning for class representation within image regions. This GRM module enhances feature representation in high-level semantics of the segmentation network's local convolutions, while dynamically learning semantic coherence for individual samples. Using solely image-level supervision, we have achieved state-of-the-art performance in WSSS on the PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS-COCO datasets. Extensive experimentation on both the multi-label classification and segmentation network stages underscores the effectiveness of the proposed graph reasoning approach for advancing WSSS.

Adaptive importance sampling (AIS) methods provide a useful alternative to Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for performing inference of intractable distributions. Population Monte Carlo (PMC) algorithms constitute a family of AIS approaches which adapt the proposal distributions iteratively to improve the approximation of the target distribution. Recent work in this area primarily focuses on ameliorating the proposal adaptation procedure for high-dimensional applications. However, most of the AIS algorithms use simple proposal distributions for sampling, which might be inadequate in exploring target distributions with intricate geometries. In this work, we construct expressive proposal distributions in the AIS framework using normalizing flow, an appealing approach for modeling complex distributions. We use an iterative parameter update rule to enhance the approximation of the target distribution. Numerical experiments show that in high-dimensional settings, the proposed algorithm offers significantly improved performance compared to the existing techniques.

Pointer Network (PtrNet) is a specific neural network for solving Combinatorial Optimization Problems (COPs). While PtrNets offer real-time feed-forward inference for complex COPs instances, its quality of the results tends to be less satisfactory. One possible reason is that such issue suffers from the lack of global search ability of the gradient descent, which is frequently employed in traditional PtrNet training methods including both supervised learning and reinforcement learning. To improve the performance of PtrNet, this paper delves deeply into the advantages of training PtrNet with Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), which have been widely acknowledged for not easily getting trapped by local optima. Extensive empirical studies based on the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) have been conducted. Results demonstrate that PtrNet trained with EA can consistently perform much better inference results than eight state-of-the-art methods on various problem scales. Compared with gradient descent based PtrNet training methods, EA achieves up to 30.21\% improvement in quality of the solution with the same computational time. With this advantage, this paper is able to at the first time report the results of solving 1000-dimensional TSPs by training a PtrNet on the same dimensionality, which strongly suggests that scaling up the training instances is in need to improve the performance of PtrNet on solving higher-dimensional COPs.

The core component of an Industrial Control System (ICS) is often a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) combined with various modules. In such systems, the communication between devices is mainly based on the Modbus protocol, which was developed by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 as an application-level communication protocol and has become a de facto standard for ICS for the past 40 years. Modbus TCP is a variant of this protocol for communications over the TCP/IP network. However, the Modbus protocol was not designed with security in mind, and the use of plaintext transmissions during communication makes information easily accessible to the attackers, while the lack of an authentication mechanism gives any protocol-compliant device the ability to take over control. In this study, we use the eBPF technology to shift the process of protocol change to the lower level of the operating system, making the change transparent to the existing software, and enhancing the security of the Modbus TCP protocol without affecting the existing software ecosystem as much as possible.

The paper explores the industrial multimodal Anomaly Detection (AD) task, which exploits point clouds and RGB images to localize anomalies. We introduce a novel light and fast framework that learns to map features from one modality to the other on nominal samples. At test time, anomalies are detected by pinpointing inconsistencies between observed and mapped features. Extensive experiments show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art detection and segmentation performance in both the standard and few-shot settings on the MVTec 3D-AD dataset while achieving faster inference and occupying less memory than previous multimodal AD methods. Moreover, we propose a layer-pruning technique to improve memory and time efficiency with a marginal sacrifice in performance.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable results on various complex reasoning benchmarks. The reasoning capabilities of LLMs enable them to execute function calls, using user-provided functions to overcome their inherent limitations, such as knowledge cutoffs, poor arithmetic skills, or lack of access to private data. This development has expanded LLMs' scope to include multi-function calling, where LLMs are equipped with a variety of functions and select the proper functions based on the context. Multi-function calling abilities of LLMs have catalyzed LLM-based software development, allowing them to tackle more complex problems. However, current methods for multi-function calling often require sequential reasoning and acting for each function which can result in high latency, cost, and sometimes inaccurate behavior. To address this, we introduce LLMCompiler, which executes functions in parallel to efficiently orchestrate multi-function calling. Drawing from the principles of classical compilers, LLMCompiler streamlines parallel function calling with three components: (i) an LLM Planner, formulating execution strategies and dependencies; (ii) a Task Fetching Unit, dispatching function calling tasks; and (iii) an Executor, executing these tasks in parallel. LLMCompiler automatically computes an optimized orchestration for the function calls and can be used with open-source models such as LLaMA-2. We have benchmarked LLMCompiler on a range of tasks including cases with non-trivial inter-dependency between function calls, as well as cases that require dynamic replanning based on intermediate results. We observe consistent latency speedup of up to 3.7x, cost savings of up to 6.7x, and accuracy improvement of up to ~9% as compared to ReAct. Additionally, LLMCompiler achieves up to 1.35x latency gain over OpenAI's recent parallel function calling, while achieving similar accuracy.

The Impostor Phenomenon (IP) is widely discussed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and has been evaluated in Computer Science students. However, formal research on IP in software engineers has yet to be conducted, although its impacts may lead to mental disorders such as depression and burnout. This study describes a survey that investigates the extent of impostor feelings in software engineers, considering aspects such as gender, race/ethnicity, and roles. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of IP on their perceived productivity. The survey instrument was designed using a theory-driven approach and included demographic questions, an internationally validated IP scale, and questions for measuring perceived productivity based on the SPACE framework constructs. The survey was sent to companies operating in various business sectors. Data analysis used bootstrapping with resampling to calculate confidence intervals and Mann-Whitney statistical significance testing for assessing the hypotheses. We received responses from 624 software engineers from 26 countries. The bootstrapping results reveal that a proportion of 52.7% of software engineers experience frequent to intense levels of IP and that women suffer at a significantly higher proportion (60.6%) than men (48.8%). Regarding race/ethnicity, we observed more frequent impostor feelings in Asian (67.9%) and Black (65.1%) than in White (50.0%) software engineers. We also observed that the presence of IP is less common among individuals who are married and have children. Moreover, the prevalence of IP showed a statistically significant negative effect on the perceived productivity for all SPACE framework constructs. The evidence relating IP to software engineers provides a starting point to help organizations find ways to raise awareness of the problem and improve the emotional skills of software professionals.

2D-based Industrial Anomaly Detection has been widely discussed, however, multimodal industrial anomaly detection based on 3D point clouds and RGB images still has many untouched fields. Existing multimodal industrial anomaly detection methods directly concatenate the multimodal features, which leads to a strong disturbance between features and harms the detection performance. In this paper, we propose Multi-3D-Memory (M3DM), a novel multimodal anomaly detection method with hybrid fusion scheme: firstly, we design an unsupervised feature fusion with patch-wise contrastive learning to encourage the interaction of different modal features; secondly, we use a decision layer fusion with multiple memory banks to avoid loss of information and additional novelty classifiers to make the final decision. We further propose a point feature alignment operation to better align the point cloud and RGB features. Extensive experiments show that our multimodal industrial anomaly detection model outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods on both detection and segmentation precision on MVTec-3D AD dataset. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown promising results on a broad spectrum of applications. Most empirical studies of GNNs directly take the observed graph as input, assuming the observed structure perfectly depicts the accurate and complete relations between nodes. However, graphs in the real world are inevitably noisy or incomplete, which could even exacerbate the quality of graph representations. In this work, we propose a novel Variational Information Bottleneck guided Graph Structure Learning framework, namely VIB-GSL, in the perspective of information theory. VIB-GSL advances the Information Bottleneck (IB) principle for graph structure learning, providing a more elegant and universal framework for mining underlying task-relevant relations. VIB-GSL learns an informative and compressive graph structure to distill the actionable information for specific downstream tasks. VIB-GSL deduces a variational approximation for irregular graph data to form a tractable IB objective function, which facilitates training stability. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the superior effectiveness and robustness of VIB-GSL.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) draw their strength from explicitly modeling the topological information of structured data. However, existing GNNs suffer from limited capability in capturing the hierarchical graph representation which plays an important role in graph classification. In this paper, we innovatively propose hierarchical graph capsule network (HGCN) that can jointly learn node embeddings and extract graph hierarchies. Specifically, disentangled graph capsules are established by identifying heterogeneous factors underlying each node, such that their instantiation parameters represent different properties of the same entity. To learn the hierarchical representation, HGCN characterizes the part-whole relationship between lower-level capsules (part) and higher-level capsules (whole) by explicitly considering the structure information among the parts. Experimental studies demonstrate the effectiveness of HGCN and the contribution of each component.

Weakly supervised phrase grounding aims at learning region-phrase correspondences using only image-sentence pairs. A major challenge thus lies in the missing links between image regions and sentence phrases during training. To address this challenge, we leverage a generic object detector at training time, and propose a contrastive learning framework that accounts for both region-phrase and image-sentence matching. Our core innovation is the learning of a region-phrase score function, based on which an image-sentence score function is further constructed. Importantly, our region-phrase score function is learned by distilling from soft matching scores between the detected object class names and candidate phrases within an image-sentence pair, while the image-sentence score function is supervised by ground-truth image-sentence pairs. The design of such score functions removes the need of object detection at test time, thereby significantly reducing the inference cost. Without bells and whistles, our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on the task of visual phrase grounding, surpassing previous methods that require expensive object detectors at test time.
