We consider the problem of group interactions in urban driving. State-of-the-art behavior planners for self-driving cars mostly consider each single agent-to-agent interaction separately in a cost function in order to find an optimal behavior for the ego agent, such as not colliding with any of the other agents. In this paper, we develop risk shadowing, a situation understanding method that allows us to go beyond single interactions by analyzing group interactions between three agents. Concretely, the presented method can find out which first other agent does not need to be considered in the behavior planner of an ego agent, because this first other agent cannot reach the ego agent due to a second other agent obstructing its way. In experiments, we show that using risk shadowing as an upstream filter module for a behavior planner allows to plan more decisive and comfortable driving strategies than state of the art, given that safety is ensured in these cases. The usability of the approach is demonstrated for different intersection scenarios and longitudinal driving.

Emotion detection is a critical technology extensively employed in diverse fields. While the incorporation of commonsense knowledge has proven beneficial for existing emotion detection methods, dialogue-based emotion detection encounters numerous difficulties and challenges due to human agency and the variability of dialogue content.In dialogues, human emotions tend to accumulate in bursts. However, they are often implicitly expressed. This implies that many genuine emotions remain concealed within a plethora of unrelated words and dialogues.In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Causal Disentanglement Model based on hidden variable separation, which is founded on the separation of hidden variables. This model effectively decomposes the content of dialogues and investigates the temporal accumulation of emotions, thereby enabling more precise emotion recognition. First, we introduce a novel Causal Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) to establish the correlation between hidden emotional information and other observed elements. Subsequently, our approach utilizes pre-extracted personal attributes and utterance topics as guiding factors for the distribution of hidden variables, aiming to separate irrelevant ones. Specifically, we propose a dynamic temporal disentanglement model to infer the propagation of utterances and hidden variables, enabling the accumulation of emotion-related information throughout the conversation. To guide this disentanglement process, we leverage the ChatGPT-4.0 and LSTM networks to extract utterance topics and personal attributes as observed information.Finally, we test our approach on two popular datasets in dialogue emotion detection and relevant experimental results verified the model's superiority.

Autonomous vehicles hold great promise in improving the future of transportation. The driving models used in these vehicles are based on neural networks, which can be difficult to validate. However, ensuring the safety of these models is crucial. Traditional field tests can be costly, time-consuming, and dangerous. To address these issues, scenario-based closed-loop simulations can simulate many hours of vehicle operation in a shorter amount of time and allow for specific investigation of important situations. Nonetheless, the detection of relevant traffic scenarios that also offer substantial testing benefits remains a significant challenge. To address this need, in this paper we build an imitation learning based trajectory prediction for traffic participants. We combine an image-based (CNN) approach to represent spatial environmental factors and a graph-based (GNN) approach to specifically represent relations between traffic participants. In our understanding, traffic scenes that are highly interactive due to the network's significant utilization of the social component are more pertinent for a validation process. Therefore, we propose to use the activity of such sub networks as a measure of interactivity of a traffic scene. We evaluate our model using a motion dataset and discuss the value of the relationship information with respect to different traffic situations.

In the standard use case of Algorithmic Fairness, the goal is to eliminate the relationship between a sensitive variable and a corresponding score. Throughout recent years, the scientific community has developed a host of definitions and tools to solve this task, which work well in many practical applications. However, the applicability and effectivity of these tools and definitions becomes less straightfoward in the case of multiple sensitive attributes. To tackle this issue, we propose a sequential framework, which allows to progressively achieve fairness across a set of sensitive features. We accomplish this by leveraging multi-marginal Wasserstein barycenters, which extends the standard notion of Strong Demographic Parity to the case with multiple sensitive characteristics. This method also provides a closed-form solution for the optimal, sequentially fair predictor, permitting a clear interpretation of inter-sensitive feature correlations. Our approach seamlessly extends to approximate fairness, enveloping a framework accommodating the trade-off between risk and unfairness. This extension permits a targeted prioritization of fairness improvements for a specific attribute within a set of sensitive attributes, allowing for a case specific adaptation. A data-driven estimation procedure for the derived solution is developed, and comprehensive numerical experiments are conducted on both synthetic and real datasets. Our empirical findings decisively underscore the practical efficacy of our post-processing approach in fostering fair decision-making.

Ubiquitous robot control and human-robot collaboration using smart devices poses a challenging problem primarily due to strict accuracy requirements and sparse information. This paper presents a novel approach that incorporates a probabilistic differentiable filter, specifically the Differentiable Ensemble Kalman Filter (DEnKF), to facilitate robot control solely using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) observations from a smartwatch and a smartphone. The implemented system achieves accurate estimation of human pose state with a reduction of 30.2% compared to the baseline using the Mean Per Joint Vertex Error (MPJVE). Our results foster smartwatches and smartphones as a cost-effective alternative human-pose state estimation. Furthermore, experiment results from human-robot handover tasks underscore that smart devices allow for low-cost, versatile and ubiquitous robot control.

Developing high-performing dialogue systems benefits from the automatic identification of undesirable behaviors in system responses. However, detecting such behaviors remains challenging, as it draws on a breadth of general knowledge and understanding of conversational practices. Although recent research has focused on building specialized classifiers for detecting specific dialogue behaviors, the behavior coverage is still incomplete and there is a lack of testing on real-world human-bot interactions. This paper investigates the ability of a state-of-the-art large language model (LLM), ChatGPT-3.5, to perform dialogue behavior detection for nine categories in real human-bot dialogues. We aim to assess whether ChatGPT can match specialized models and approximate human performance, thereby reducing the cost of behavior detection tasks. Our findings reveal that neither specialized models nor ChatGPT have yet achieved satisfactory results for this task, falling short of human performance. Nevertheless, ChatGPT shows promising potential and often outperforms specialized detection models. We conclude with an in-depth examination of the prevalent shortcomings of ChatGPT, offering guidance for future research to enhance LLM capabilities.

Quadruped robots are machines intended for challenging and harsh environments. Despite the progress in locomotion strategy, safely recovering from unexpected falls or planned drops is still an open problem. It is further made more difficult when high horizontal velocities are involved. In this work, we propose an optimization-based reactive Landing Controller that uses only proprioceptive measures for torque-controlled quadruped robots that free-fall on a flat horizontal ground, knowing neither the distance to the landing surface nor the flight time. Based on an estimate of the Center of Mass horizontal velocity, the method uses the Variable Height Springy Inverted Pendulum model for continuously recomputing the feet position while the robot is falling. In this way, the quadruped is ready to attain a successful landing in all directions, even in the presence of significant horizontal velocities. The method is demonstrated to dramatically enlarge the region of horizontal velocities that can be dealt with by a naive approach that keeps the feet still during the airborne stage. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a quadruped robot can successfully recover from falls with horizontal velocities up to 3 m/s in simulation. Experiments prove that the used platform, Go1, can successfully attain a stable standing configuration from falls with various horizontal velocity and different angular perturbations.

We study a new incentive problem of social information sharing for location-based services (e.g., Waze and Yelp). The problem aims to crowdsource a mass of mobile users to learn massive point-of-interest (PoI) information while traveling and share it with each other as a public good. Given that crowdsourced users mind their own travel costs and possess various preferences over the PoI information along different paths, we formulate the problem as a non-atomic routing game with positive network externalities. We first show by price of anarchy (PoA) analysis that, in the absence of any incentive design, users' selfish routing on the path with the lowest cost will limit information diversity and lead to an arbitrarily large efficiency loss from the social optimum. This motivates us to explore effective incentive mechanisms to remedy while upholding individual rationality, incentive compatibility, and budget balance to ensure practical feasibility. We start by presenting an adaptive information restriction (AIR) mechanism that dynamically customizes restriction fractions, depending on the real user flows along different paths, to govern users' access to the shared PoI aggregation. We show that AIR achieves a PoA of 0.25 for homogeneous users (of identical PoI preferences over paths) and 0.125 for heterogeneous users in a typical network of two parallel paths. Further, we propose a side-payment mechanism (ASP) that adaptively charges or rewards users along certain paths. With those charges and rewards well-tailored, ASP significantly improves the PoA to 1 (optimal) and 0.5 for homogeneous and heterogeneous users in the two-path network, respectively. For a generalized network of multiple parallel paths, we further advance ASP to be able to guarantee a PoA of 0.5. Additionally, our theoretical results are well corroborated by our numerical findings.

Monitoring drivers' mental workload facilitates initiating and maintaining safe interactions with in-vehicle information systems, and thus delivers adaptive human machine interaction with reduced impact on the primary task of driving. In this paper, we tackle the problem of workload estimation from driving performance data. First, we present a novel on-road study for collecting subjective workload data via a modified peripheral detection task in naturalistic settings. Key environmental factors that induce a high mental workload are identified via video analysis, e.g. junctions and behaviour of vehicle in front. Second, a supervised learning framework using state-of-the-art time series classifiers (e.g. convolutional neural network and transform techniques) is introduced to profile drivers based on the average workload they experience during a journey. A Bayesian filtering approach is then proposed for sequentially estimating, in (near) real-time, the driver's instantaneous workload. This computationally efficient and flexible method can be easily personalised to a driver (e.g. incorporate their inferred average workload profile), adapted to driving/environmental contexts (e.g. road type) and extended with data streams from new sources. The efficacy of the presented profiling and instantaneous workload estimation approaches are demonstrated using the on-road study data, showing $F_{1}$ scores of up to 92% and 81%, respectively.

Emotion plays an important role in detecting fake news online. When leveraging emotional signals, the existing methods focus on exploiting the emotions of news contents that conveyed by the publishers (i.e., publisher emotion). However, fake news is always fabricated to evoke high-arousal or activating emotions of people to spread like a virus, so the emotions of news comments that aroused by the crowd (i.e., social emotion) can not be ignored. Furthermore, it needs to be explored whether there exists a relationship between publisher emotion and social emotion (i.e., dual emotion), and how the dual emotion appears in fake news. In the paper, we propose Dual Emotion Features to mine dual emotion and the relationship between them for fake news detection. And we design a universal paradigm to plug it into any existing detectors as an enhancement. Experimental results on three real-world datasets indicate the effectiveness of the proposed features.

Providing model-generated explanations in recommender systems is important to user experience. State-of-the-art recommendation algorithms -- especially the collaborative filtering (CF) based approaches with shallow or deep models -- usually work with various unstructured information sources for recommendation, such as textual reviews, visual images, and various implicit or explicit feedbacks. Though structured knowledge bases were considered in content-based approaches, they have been largely ignored recently due to the availability of vast amount of data and the learning power of many complex models. However, structured knowledge bases exhibit unique advantages in personalized recommendation systems. When the explicit knowledge about users and items is considered for recommendation, the system could provide highly customized recommendations based on users' historical behaviors and the knowledge is helpful for providing informed explanations regarding the recommended items. In this work, we propose to reason over knowledge base embeddings for explainable recommendation. Specifically, we propose a knowledge base representation learning framework to embed heterogeneous entities for recommendation, and based on the embedded knowledge base, a soft matching algorithm is proposed to generate personalized explanations for the recommended items. Experimental results on real-world e-commerce datasets verified the superior recommendation performance and the explainability power of our approach compared with state-of-the-art baselines.
