The three-dimensional reconstruction of vocal folds in medicine usually involves endoscopy and an approach to extract depth information like structured light or stereo matching of images. The resulting mesh can accurately represent the superior area of the vocal folds, while new approaches also try to reconstruct the inferior area. We propose a novel approach to extract the time-dependent 3D geometry of the vocal fold from optical measurements on both the superior and inferior side, requiring optical measurements only from the superior side. First, a time-dependent, tri-variate surface velocity vector field is reconstructed using a high-speed camera and a laser Doppler vibrometer in an experimental environment. This vector field serves as target in an inverse finite-element simulation that optimizes the forces applied to a deformable vocal fold model such that the resulting movement after FEM simulation matches the velocity observations on the superior side. The required forces for the finite element method simulation are treated as unknowns and are assembled using multiple scalar fields. We use tensor products in B\'ezier Bernstein basis for our scalar fields to reduce the degrees of freedom for our optimization. We use gradient descent to optimize the control points of the force field polynomials. Our utilized error metric for gradient descent consists of two terms. The first term is used to match the simulated velocities to the observed measurements, while the second term measures the silhouette difference between observation and simulation.
The non-life insurance sector operates within a highly competitive and tightly regulated framework, confronting a pivotal juncture in the formulation of pricing strategies. Insurers are compelled to harness a range of statistical methodologies and available data to construct optimal pricing structures that align with the overarching corporate strategy while accommodating the dynamics of market competition. Given the fundamental societal role played by insurance, premium rates are subject to rigorous scrutiny by regulatory authorities. These rates must conform to principles of transparency, explainability, and ethical considerations. Consequently, the act of pricing transcends mere statistical calculations and carries the weight of strategic and societal factors. These multifaceted concerns may drive insurers to establish equitable premiums, taking into account various variables. For instance, regulations mandate the provision of equitable premiums, considering factors such as policyholder gender or mutualist group dynamics in accordance with respective corporate strategies. Age-based premium fairness is also mandated. In certain insurance domains, variables such as the presence of serious illnesses or disabilities are emerging as new dimensions for evaluating fairness. Regardless of the motivating factor prompting an insurer to adopt fairer pricing strategies for a specific variable, the insurer must possess the capability to define, measure, and ultimately mitigate any ethical biases inherent in its pricing practices while upholding standards of consistency and performance. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive set of tools for these endeavors and assess their effectiveness through practical application in the context of automobile insurance.
We consider the problem of linear estimation, and establish an extension of the Gauss-Markov theorem, in which the bias operator is allowed to be non-zero but bounded with respect to a matrix norm of Schatten type. We derive simple and explicit formulas for the optimal estimator in the cases of Nuclear and Spectral norms (with the Frobenius case recovering ridge regression). Additionally, we analytically derive the generalization error in multiple random matrix ensembles, and compare with Ridge regression. Finally, we conduct an extensive simulation study, in which we show that the cross-validated Nuclear and Spectral regressors can outperform Ridge in several circumstances.
Nonparametric regression problems with qualitative constraints such as monotonicity or convexity are ubiquitous in applications. For example, in predicting the yield of a factory in terms of the number of labor hours, the monotonicity of the conditional mean function is a natural constraint. One can estimate a monotone conditional mean function using nonparametric least squares estimation, which involves no tuning parameters. Several interesting properties of the isotonic LSE are known including its rate of convergence, adaptivity properties, and pointwise asymptotic distribution. However, we believe that the full richness of the asymptotic limit theory has not been explored in the literature which we do in this paper. Moreover, the inference problem is not fully settled. In this paper, we present some new results for monotone regression including an extension of existing results to triangular arrays, and provide asymptotically valid confidence intervals that are uniformly valid over a large class of distributions.
The image annotation stage is a critical and often the most time-consuming part required for training and evaluating object detection and semantic segmentation models. Deployment of the existing models in novel environments often requires detecting novel semantic classes not present in the training data. Furthermore, indoor scenes contain significant viewpoint variations, which need to be handled properly by trained perception models. We propose to leverage the recent advancements in state-of-the-art models for bottom-up segmentation (SAM), object detection (Detic), and semantic segmentation (MaskFormer), all trained on large-scale datasets. We aim to develop a cost-effective labeling approach to obtain pseudo-labels for semantic segmentation and object instance detection in indoor environments, with the ultimate goal of facilitating the training of lightweight models for various downstream tasks. We also propose a multi-view labeling fusion stage, which considers the setting where multiple views of the scenes are available and can be used to identify and rectify single-view inconsistencies. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on the Active Vision dataset and the ADE20K dataset. We evaluate the quality of our labeling process by comparing it with human annotations. Also, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained labels in downstream tasks such as object goal navigation and part discovery. In the context of object goal navigation, we depict enhanced performance using this fusion approach compared to a zero-shot baseline that utilizes large monolithic vision-language pre-trained models.
We consider the problem of detecting causal relationships between discrete time series, in the presence of potential confounders. A hypothesis test is introduced for identifying the temporally causal influence of $(x_n)$ on $(y_n)$, causally conditioned on a possibly confounding third time series $(z_n)$. Under natural Markovian modeling assumptions, it is shown that the null hypothesis, corresponding to the absence of temporally causal influence, is equivalent to the underlying `causal conditional directed information rate' being equal to zero. The plug-in estimator for this functional is identified with the log-likelihood ratio test statistic for the desired test. This statistic is shown to be asymptotically normal under the alternative hypothesis and asymptotically $\chi^2$ distributed under the null, facilitating the computation of $p$-values when used on empirical data. The effectiveness of the resulting hypothesis test is illustrated on simulated data, validating the underlying theory. The test is also employed in the analysis of spike train data recorded from neurons in the V4 and FEF brain regions of behaving animals during a visual attention task. There, the test results are seen to identify interesting and biologically relevant information.
Graph-based interactive theorem provers offer a visual representation of proofs, explicitly representing the dependencies and inferences between each of the proof steps in a graph or hypergraph format. The number and complexity of these dependency links can determine how long it takes to verify the validity of the entire proof. Towards this end, we present a set of parallel algorithms for the formal verification of graph-based natural-deduction (ND) style proofs. We introduce a definition of layering that captures dependencies between the proof steps (nodes). Nodes in each layer can then be verified in parallel as long as prior layers have been verified. To evaluate the performance of our algorithms on proof graphs, we propose a framework for finding the performance bounds and patterns using directed acyclic network topologies (DANTs). This framework allows us to create concrete instances of DANTs for empirical evaluation of our algorithms. With this, we compare our set of parallel algorithms against a serial implementation with two experiments: one scaling both the problem size and the other scaling the number of threads. Our findings show that parallelization results in improved verification performance for certain DANT instances. We also show that our algorithms scale for certain DANT instances with respect to the number of threads.
Organizational charts, also known as org charts, are critical representations of an organization's structure and the hierarchical relationships between its components and positions. However, manually extracting information from org charts can be error-prone and time-consuming. To solve this, we present an automated and end-to-end approach that uses computer vision, deep learning, and natural language processing techniques. Additionally, we propose a metric to evaluate the completeness and hierarchical accuracy of the extracted information. This approach has the potential to improve organizational restructuring and resource utilization by providing a clear and concise representation of the organizational structure. Our study lays a foundation for further research on the topic of hierarchical chart analysis.
Pre-trained deep neural network language models such as ELMo, GPT, BERT and XLNet have recently achieved state-of-the-art performance on a variety of language understanding tasks. However, their size makes them impractical for a number of scenarios, especially on mobile and edge devices. In particular, the input word embedding matrix accounts for a significant proportion of the model's memory footprint, due to the large input vocabulary and embedding dimensions. Knowledge distillation techniques have had success at compressing large neural network models, but they are ineffective at yielding student models with vocabularies different from the original teacher models. We introduce a novel knowledge distillation technique for training a student model with a significantly smaller vocabulary as well as lower embedding and hidden state dimensions. Specifically, we employ a dual-training mechanism that trains the teacher and student models simultaneously to obtain optimal word embeddings for the student vocabulary. We combine this approach with learning shared projection matrices that transfer layer-wise knowledge from the teacher model to the student model. Our method is able to compress the BERT_BASE model by more than 60x, with only a minor drop in downstream task metrics, resulting in a language model with a footprint of under 7MB. Experimental results also demonstrate higher compression efficiency and accuracy when compared with other state-of-the-art compression techniques.
We introduce a multi-task setup of identifying and classifying entities, relations, and coreference clusters in scientific articles. We create SciERC, a dataset that includes annotations for all three tasks and develop a unified framework called Scientific Information Extractor (SciIE) for with shared span representations. The multi-task setup reduces cascading errors between tasks and leverages cross-sentence relations through coreference links. Experiments show that our multi-task model outperforms previous models in scientific information extraction without using any domain-specific features. We further show that the framework supports construction of a scientific knowledge graph, which we use to analyze information in scientific literature.
High spectral dimensionality and the shortage of annotations make hyperspectral image (HSI) classification a challenging problem. Recent studies suggest that convolutional neural networks can learn discriminative spatial features, which play a paramount role in HSI interpretation. However, most of these methods ignore the distinctive spectral-spatial characteristic of hyperspectral data. In addition, a large amount of unlabeled data remains an unexploited gold mine for efficient data use. Therefore, we proposed an integration of generative adversarial networks (GANs) and probabilistic graphical models for HSI classification. Specifically, we used a spectral-spatial generator and a discriminator to identify land cover categories of hyperspectral cubes. Moreover, to take advantage of a large amount of unlabeled data, we adopted a conditional random field to refine the preliminary classification results generated by GANs. Experimental results obtained using two commonly studied datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework achieved encouraging classification accuracy using a small number of data for training.
