In reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems, in order to overcome the limitation of the conventional channel state information (CSI) acquisition techniques, this paper proposes a location information assisted beamforming design without the requirement of the conventional channel training process. First, we establish the geometrical relation between the channel model and the user location, based on which we derive an approximate CSI error bound based on the user location error by means of Taylor approximation, triangle and power mean inequalities, and semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Second, for combating the uncertainty of the location error, we formulate a worst-case robust beamforming optimization problem. To solve the problem efficiently, we develop a novel iterative algorithm by utilizing various optimization tools such as Lagrange multiplier, matrix inversion lemma, SDR, as well as branch-and-bound (BnB). Particularly, the BnB algorithm is modified to acquire the phase shift solution under an arbitrary constraint of possible phase shift values. Finally, we analyse the algorithm complexity, and carry out simulations to validate the theoretical derivation of the CSI error bound and the robustness of the proposed algorithm. Compared with the existing non-robust approach and the robust beamforming techniques based on S-procedure and penalty convex-concave procedure (CCP), our method converges faster and achieves better performance in terms of the worst-case signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver.
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are planar structures connected to electronic circuitry, which can be employed to steer the electromagnetic signals in a controlled manner. Through this, the signal quality and the effective data rate can be substantially improved. While the benefits of RIS-assisted wireless communications have been investigated for various scenarios, some aspects of the network design, such as coverage, optimal placement of RIS, etc., often require complex optimization and numerical simulations, since the achievable effective rate is difficult to predict. This problem becomes even more difficult in the presence of phase estimation errors or location uncertainty, which can lead to substantial performance degradation if neglected. Considering randomly distributed receivers within a ring-shaped RIS-assisted wireless network, this paper mainly investigates the effective rate by taking into account the above-mentioned impairments. Furthermore, exact closed-form expressions for the effective rate are derived in terms of Meijer's $G$-function, which (i) reveals that the location and phase estimation uncertainty should be well considered in the deployment of RIS in wireless networks; and (ii) facilitates future network design and performance prediction.
In this paper, a novel uplink communication for the transmissive reconfigurable metasurface (RMS) multi-antenna system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is investigated. Specifically, a transmissive RMS-based receiver equipped with a single receiving antenna is first proposed, and a far-near field channel model based on planar waves and spherical waves is given. Then, in order to maximize the system sum-rate of uplink communications, we formulate a joint optimization problem over subcarrier allocation, power allocation and RMS transmissive coefficient design. Due to the coupling of optimization variables, the optimization problem is non-convex, so it is challenging to solve it directly. In order to tackle this problem, the alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is used to decouple the optimization variables and divide the problem into two sub-problems to solve. First, the problem of joint subcarrier allocation and power allocation is solved via the Lagrangian dual decomposition method. Then, the RMS transmissive coefficient design can be obtained by applying difference-of-convex (DC) programming, successive convex approximation (SCA) and penalty function methods. Finally, the two sub-problems are iterated alternately until convergence is achieved. Numerical simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has good convergence performance and can improve system sum-rate compared with other benchmark algorithms.
In this paper, we propose a scheme for the joint optimization of the user transmit power and the antenna selection at the access points (AP)s of a user-centric cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UC CF-mMIMO) system. We derive an approximate expression for the achievable uplink rate of the users in a UC CF-mMIMO system in the presence of a mixed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) resolution profile at the APs. Using the derived approximation, we propose to maximize the uplink sum rate of UC CF-mMIMO systems subject to energy constraints at the APs. An alternating-optimization solution is proposed using binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) and successive convex approximation (SCA). We also study the impact of various system parameters on the performance of the system.
This paper investigates the capacity of general multiple-input single-output (MISO) optical intensity channels (OICs) under per-antenna peak- and average-intensity constraints. We first consider the MISO equal-cost constrained OIC (EC-OIC), where, apart from the peak-intensity constraint, average intensities of inputs are equal to arbitrarily preassigned constants. The second model of our interest is the MISO bounded-cost constrained OIC (BC-OIC), where, as compared with the EC-OIC, average intensities of inputs are no larger than arbitrarily preassigned constants. By leveraging tools from quantile functions, stop-loss transform and convex ordering of nonnegative random variables, we prove two decomposition theorems for bounded and nonnegative random variables, based on which we equivalently transform both the EC-OIC and the BC-OIC into respective single-input single-output channels under a peak-intensity and several stop-loss mean constraints. Capacity lower and upper bounds for both channels are established, based on which the asymptotic capacity at high and low signal-to-noise-ratio are determined.
Benefiting from the growth of the bandwidth, Terahertz (THz) communication can support the new application with explosive requirements of the ultra-high-speed rates for future 6G wireless systems. In order to compensate for the path loss of high frequency, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can be utilized for high array gains by beamforming. However, since a large number of analog phase shifters should be used to realize the analog beamforming, the existing THz communication with massive MIMO has very high energy consumption. To solve this problem, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based hybrid precoding architecture for THz communication is developed in this paper, where the energy-hungry phased array is replaced by the energy-efficient RIS to realize the analog beamforming of the hybrid precoding. Then, based on the proposed RIS-based architecture, a sum-rate maximization problem for hybrid precoding is investigated. Since the phase shifts implemented by RIS in practice are often discrete, this sum-rate maximization problem with a non-convex constraint is challenging. Next, the sum-rate maximization problem is reformulated as a parallel deep neural network (DNN)-based classification problem, which can be solved by the proposed low-complexity deep learning-based multiple discrete classification (DL-MDC) hybrid precoding scheme. Finally, we provide numerous simulation results to show that the proposed DL-MDC scheme works well both in the theoretical Saleh-Valenzuela channel model and practical 3GPP channel model. Compared with existing iterative search algorithms, the can proposed DL-MDC scheme reduces the runtime significantly with a negligible performance loss.
We propose a novel binary polarization shift keying modulation scheme for a line-of-sight environment by exploiting the polarization control ability of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). The RIS encodes the information data in terms of the polarization states of either the reflected wave from the RIS or the composite wireless channel between an RF source and receiver. In the first case, polarization mismatch correction becomes essential at the receiver. In the second case, the RIS pre-codes the reflected wave to compensate for the polarization mismatch which allows non-coherent demodulation at the receiver.
With the advent of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication networks, it requires substantially increasing wireless traffic and extending serving coverage. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is widely considered as a promising technique which is capable of improving the system data rate, energy efficiency and coverage extension as well as the benefit of low power consumption. Moreover, full-duplex (FD) transmission provides simultaneous transmit and received signals, which theoretically enhances twice spectrum efficiency. However, the self-interference (SI) in FD is a challenging task requiring complex and high-overhead cancellation, which can be resolved by configuring appropriate phase of RIS elements. This paper has proposed an RIS-empowered full-duplex self-interference cancellation (RFSC) scheme to alleviate the severe SI in an RIS-FD system. We consider the SI minimization of RIS-FD uplink (UL) while guaranteeing quality-of-service (QoS) of UL users. The closed-form solution is theoretically derived by exploiting Lagrangian method under different numbers of RIS elements and receiving antennas. Simulation results reveal that the proposed RFSC scheme outperforms the scenario without RIS deployment in terms of higher signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Due to effective interference mitigation, the proposed RFSC can achieve the highest SINR compared to other existing schemes in open literatures.
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provide an interface between the electromagnetic world of wireless propagation environments and the digital world of information science. Simple yet sufficiently accurate path loss models for RISs are an important basis for theoretical analysis and optimization of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. In this paper, we refine our previously proposed free-space path loss model for RISs to make it simpler, more applicable, and easier to use. The impact of the antenna's directivity of the transmitter, receiver, and the unit cells of the RIS on the path loss is explicitly formulated as an angle-dependent loss factor. The refined model gives more accurate estimates of the path loss of RISs comprised of unit cells with a deep sub-wavelength size. Based on the proposed model, the properties of a single unit cell are evaluated in terms of scattering performance, power consumption, and area, which allows us to unveil fundamental considerations for deploying RISs in high frequency bands. Two fabricated RISs operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band are utilized to carry out a measurement campaign. The measurement results are shown to be in good agreement with the proposed path loss model. In addition, the experimental results suggest an effective form to characterize the power radiation pattern of the unit cell for path loss modeling.
Federated learning (FL) has recently emerged as a promising technology to enable artificial intelligence (AI) at the network edge, where distributed mobile devices collaboratively train a shared AI model under the coordination of an edge server. To significantly improve the communication efficiency of FL, over-the-air computation allows a large number of mobile devices to concurrently upload their local models by exploiting the superposition property of wireless multi-access channels. Due to wireless channel fading, the model aggregation error at the edge server is dominated by the weakest channel among all devices, causing severe straggler issues. In this paper, we propose a relay-assisted cooperative FL scheme to effectively address the straggler issue. In particular, we deploy multiple half-duplex relays to cooperatively assist the devices in uploading the local model updates to the edge server. The nature of the over-the-air computation poses system objectives and constraints that are distinct from those in traditional relay communication systems. Moreover, the strong coupling between the design variables renders the optimization of such a system challenging. To tackle the issue, we propose an alternating-optimization-based algorithm to optimize the transceiver and relay operation with low complexity. Then, we analyze the model aggregation error in a single-relay case and show that our relay-assisted scheme achieves a smaller error than the one without relays provided that the relay transmit power and the relay channel gains are sufficiently large. The analysis provides critical insights on relay deployment in the implementation of cooperative FL. Extensive numerical results show that our design achieves faster convergence compared with state-of-the-art schemes.
In this paper, a two-stage channel estimation scheme for two-way MIMO relay systems with a single relay antenna is proposed. The backward channel is estimated by using linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) at the first stage, where the optimal training signal is designed. We then mainly focus on the forward channel estimation by using singular value decomposition (SVD) based maximum likelihood method, and the related training signal is proposed. We note that the forward channel estimator is nonlinear and by analyzing the asymptotic Bayesian Cramer-rao Lower Bound (BCRLB), we seek BCRLB as the criterion for training signal design. Finally, the numerical results show that the proposed training signal can improve the MSE performance.
