The probabilistic method is a technique for proving combinatorial existence results by means of showing that a randomly chosen object has the desired properties with positive probability. A particularly powerful probabilistic tool is the Lov\'{a}sz Local Lemma (the LLL for short), which was introduced by Erd\H{o}s and Lov\'{a}sz in the mid-1970s. Here we develop a version of the LLL that can be used to prove the existence of continuous colorings. We then give several applications in Borel and topological dynamics. * Seward and Tucker-Drob showed that every free Borel action $\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ of a countable group $\Gamma$ admits an equivariant Borel map $\pi \colon X \to Y$ to a free subshift $Y \subset 2^\Gamma$. We give a new simple proof of this result. * We show that for a countable group $\Gamma$, $\mathrm{Free}(2^\Gamma)$ is weakly contained, in the sense of Elek, in every free continuous action of $\Gamma$ on a zero-dimensional Polish space. This fact is analogous to the theorem of Ab\'{e}rt and Weiss for probability measure-preserving actions and has a number of consequences in continuous combinatorics. In particular, we deduce that a coloring problem admits a continuous solution on $\mathrm{Free}(2^\Gamma)$ if and only if it can be solved on finite subgraphs of the Cayley graph of $\Gamma$ by an efficient deterministic distributed algorithm (this fact was also proved independently and using different methods by Seward). This establishes a formal correspondence between questions that have been studied independently in continuous combinatorics and in distributed computing.
The aim in packing problems is to decide if a given set of pieces can be placed inside a given container. A packing problem is defined by the types of pieces and containers to be handled, and the motions that are allowed to move the pieces. The pieces must be placed so that in the resulting placement, they are pairwise interior-disjoint. We establish a framework which enables us to show that for many combinations of allowed pieces, containers and motions, the resulting problem is $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete. This means that the problem is equivalent (under polynomial time reductions) to deciding whether a given system of polynomial equations and inequalities with integer coefficients has a real solution. We consider packing problems where only translations are allowed as the motions, and problems where arbitrary rigid motions are allowed, i.e., both translations and rotations. When rotations are allowed, we show that it is an $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete problem to decide if a set of convex polygons, each of which has at most $7$ corners, can be packed into a square. Restricted to translations, we show that the following problems are $\exists \mathbb{R}$-complete: (i) pieces bounded by segments and hyperbolic curves to be packed in a square, and (ii) convex polygons to be packed in a container bounded by segments and hyperbolic curves.
In Statistical Relational Artificial Intelligence, a branch of AI and machine learning which combines the logical and statistical schools of AI, one uses the concept {\em para\-metrized probabilistic graphical model (PPGM)} to model (conditional) dependencies between random variables and to make probabilistic inferences about events on a space of "possible worlds". The set of possible worlds with underlying domain $D$ (a set of objects) can be represented by the set $\mathbf{W}_D$ of all first-order structures (for a suitable signature) with domain $D$. Using a formal logic we can describe events on $\mathbf{W}_D$. By combining a logic and a PPGM we can also define a probability distribution $\mathbb{P}_D$ on $\mathbf{W}_D$ and use it to compute the probability of an event. We consider a logic, denoted $PLA$, with truth values in the unit interval, which uses aggregation functions, such as arithmetic mean, geometric mean, maximum and minimum instead of quantifiers. However we face the problem of computational efficiency and this problem is an obstacle to the wider use of methods from Statistical Relational AI in practical applications. We address this problem by proving that the described probability will, under certain assumptions on the PPGM and the sentence $\varphi$, converge as the size of $D$ tends to infinity. The convergence result is obtained by showing that every formula $\varphi(x_1, \ldots, x_k)$ which contains only "admissible" aggregation functions (e.g. arithmetic and geometric mean, max and min) is asymptotically equivalent to a formula $\psi(x_1, \ldots, x_k)$ without aggregation functions.
We study complexity classes of local problems on regular trees from the perspective of distributed local algorithms and descriptive combinatorics. We show that, surprisingly, some deterministic local complexity classes from the hierarchy of distributed computing exactly coincide with well studied classes of problems in descriptive combinatorics. Namely, we show that a local problem admits a continuous solution if and only if it admits a local algorithm with local complexity $O(\log^* n)$, and a Baire measurable solution if and only if it admits a local algorithm with local complexity $O(\log n)$.
Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) are one of the most popular architectures that are used to solve classification problems accompanied by graphical information. We present a rigorous theoretical understanding of the effects of graph convolutions in multi-layer networks. We study these effects through the node classification problem of a non-linearly separable Gaussian mixture model coupled with a stochastic block model. First, we show that a single graph convolution expands the regime of the distance between the means where multi-layer networks can classify the data by a factor of at least $1/\sqrt[4]{\mathbb{E}{\rm deg}}$, where $\mathbb{E}{\rm deg}$ denotes the expected degree of a node. Second, we show that with a slightly stronger graph density, two graph convolutions improve this factor to at least $1/\sqrt[4]{n}$, where $n$ is the number of nodes in the graph. Finally, we provide both theoretical and empirical insights into the performance of graph convolutions placed in different combinations among the layers of a network, concluding that the performance is mutually similar for all combinations of the placement. We present extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world data that illustrate our results.
We study the distributed minimum spanning tree (MST) problem, a fundamental problem in distributed computing. It is well-known that distributed MST can be solved in $\tilde{O}(D+\sqrt{n})$ rounds in the standard CONGEST model (where $n$ is the network size and $D$ is the network diameter) and this is essentially the best possible round complexity (up to logarithmic factors). However, in resource-constrained networks such as ad hoc wireless and sensor networks, nodes spending so much time can lead to significant spending of resources such as energy. Motivated by the above consideration, we study distributed algorithms for MST under the \emph{sleeping model} [Chatterjee et al., PODC 2020], a model for design and analysis of resource-efficient distributed algorithms. In the sleeping model, a node can be in one of two modes in any round -- \emph{sleeping} or \emph{awake} (unlike the traditional model where nodes are always awake). Only the rounds in which a node is \emph{awake} are counted, while \emph{sleeping} rounds are ignored. A node spends resources only in the awake rounds and hence the main goal is to minimize the \emph{awake complexity} of a distributed algorithm, the worst-case number of rounds any node is awake. We present deterministic and randomized distributed MST algorithms that have an \emph{optimal} awake complexity of $O(\log n)$ time with a matching lower bound. We also show that our randomized awake-optimal algorithm has essentially the best possible round complexity by presenting a lower bound of $\tilde{\Omega}(n)$ on the product of the awake and round complexity of any distributed algorithm (including randomized) that outputs an MST, where $\tilde{\Omega}$ hides a $1/(\text{polylog } n)$ factor.
We propose a novel concise function representation for graphical models, a central theoretical framework that provides the basis for many reasoning tasks. We then show how we exploit our concise representation based on deterministic finite state automata within Bucket Elimination (BE), a general approach based on the concept of variable elimination that can be used to solve many inference and optimisation tasks, such as most probable explanation and constrained optimisation. We denote our version of BE as FABE. By using our concise representation within FABE, we dramatically improve the performance of BE in terms of runtime and memory requirements. Results achieved by comparing FABE with state of the art approaches for most probable explanation (i.e., recursive best-first and structured message passing) and constrained optimisation (i.e., CPLEX, GUROBI, and toulbar2) following an established methodology confirm the efficacy of our concise function representation, showing runtime improvements of up to 5 orders of magnitude in our tests.

A High-dimensional and sparse (HiDS) matrix is frequently encountered in a big data-related application like an e-commerce system or a social network services system. To perform highly accurate representation learning on it is of great significance owing to the great desire of extracting latent knowledge and patterns from it. Latent factor analysis (LFA), which represents an HiDS matrix by learning the low-rank embeddings based on its observed entries only, is one of the most effective and efficient approaches to this issue. However, most existing LFA-based models perform such embeddings on a HiDS matrix directly without exploiting its hidden graph structures, thereby resulting in accuracy loss. To address this issue, this paper proposes a graph-incorporated latent factor analysis (GLFA) model. It adopts two-fold ideas: 1) a graph is constructed for identifying the hidden high-order interaction (HOI) among nodes described by an HiDS matrix, and 2) a recurrent LFA structure is carefully designed with the incorporation of HOI, thereby improving the representa-tion learning ability of a resultant model. Experimental results on three real-world datasets demonstrate that GLFA outperforms six state-of-the-art models in predicting the missing data of an HiDS matrix, which evidently supports its strong representation learning ability to HiDS data.
While the theoretical analysis of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) has made significant progress for pseudo-Boolean optimization problems in the last 25 years, only sporadic theoretical results exist on how EAs solve permutation-based problems. To overcome the lack of permutation-based benchmark problems, we propose a general way to transfer the classic pseudo-Boolean benchmarks into benchmarks defined on sets of permutations. We then conduct a rigorous runtime analysis of the permutation-based $(1+1)$ EA proposed by Scharnow, Tinnefeld, and Wegener (2004) on the analogues of the \textsc{LeadingOnes} and \textsc{Jump} benchmarks. The latter shows that, different from bit-strings, it is not only the Hamming distance that determines how difficult it is to mutate a permutation $\sigma$ into another one $\tau$, but also the precise cycle structure of $\sigma \tau^{-1}$. For this reason, we also regard the more symmetric scramble mutation operator. We observe that it not only leads to simpler proofs, but also reduces the runtime on jump functions with odd jump size by a factor of $\Theta(n)$. Finally, we show that a heavy-tailed version of the scramble operator, as in the bit-string case, leads to a speed-up of order $m^{\Theta(m)}$ on jump functions with jump size~$m$.%
The lossless compression of a single source $X^n$ was recently shown to be achievable with a notion of strong locality; any $X_i$ can be decoded from a {\emph{constant}} number of compressed bits, with a vanishing in $n$ probability of error. In contrast with the single source setup, we show that for two separately encoded sources $(X^n,Y^n)$, lossless compression and strong locality is generally not possible. More precisely, we show that for the class of "confusable" sources strong locality cannot be achieved whenever one of the sources is compressed below its entropy. In this case, irrespectively of $n$, the probability of error of decoding any $(X_i,Y_i)$ is lower bounded by $2^{-O(d_{\mathrm{loc}})}$, where $d_{\mathrm{loc}}$ denotes the number of compressed bits accessed by the local decoder. Conversely, if the source is not confusable, strong locality is possible even if one of the sources is compressed below its entropy. Results extend to any number of sources.
