We discuss applications of exact structures and relative homological algebra to the study of invariants of multiparameter persistence modules. This paper is mostly expository, but does contain a pair of novel results. Over finite posets, classical arguments about the relative projective modules of an exact structure make use of Auslander-Reiten theory. One of our results establishes a new adjunction which allows us to "lift" these arguments to certain infinite posets over which Auslander-Reiten theory is not available. We give several examples of this lifting, in particular highlighting the non-existence and existence of resolutions by upsets when working with finitely presentable representations of the plane and of the closure of the positive quadrant, respectively. We then restrict our attention to finite posets. In this setting, we discuss the relationship between the global dimension of an exact structure and the representation dimension of the incidence algebra of the poset. We conclude with our second novel contribution. This is an explicit description of the irreducible morphisms between relative projective modules for several exact structures which have appeared previously in the literature.
We extend classical work by Janusz Czelakowski on the closure properties of the class of matrix models of entailment relations - nowadays more commonly called multiple-conclusion logics - to the setting of non-deterministic matrices (Nmatrices), characterizing the Nmatrix models of an arbitrary logic through a generalization of the standard class operators to the non-deterministic setting. We highlight the main differences that appear in this more general setting, in particular: the possibility to obtain Nmatrix quotients using any compatible equivalence relation (not necessarily a congruence); the problem of determining when strict homomorphisms preserve the logic of a given Nmatrix; the fact that the operations of taking images and preimages cannot be swapped, which determines the exact sequence of operators that generates, from any complete semantics, the class of all Nmatrix models of a logic. Many results, on the other hand, generalize smoothly to the non-deterministic setting: we show for instance that a logic is finitely based if and only if both the class of its Nmatrix models and its complement are closed under ultraproducts. We conclude by mentioning possible developments in adapting the Abstract Algebraic Logic approach to logics induced by Nmatrices and the associated equational reasoning over non-deterministic algebras.
Recently, advancements in deep learning-based superpixel segmentation methods have brought about improvements in both the efficiency and the performance of segmentation. However, a significant challenge remains in generating superpixels that strictly adhere to object boundaries while conveying rich visual significance, especially when cross-surface color correlations may interfere with objects. Drawing inspiration from neural structure and visual mechanisms, we propose a biological network architecture comprising an Enhanced Screening Module (ESM) and a novel Boundary-Aware Label (BAL) for superpixel segmentation. The ESM enhances semantic information by simulating the interactive projection mechanisms of the visual cortex. Additionally, the BAL emulates the spatial frequency characteristics of visual cortical cells to facilitate the generation of superpixels with strong boundary adherence. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through evaluations on both the BSDS500 dataset and the NYUv2 dataset.
Recently, Sato et al. proposed an public verifiable blind quantum computation (BQC) protocol by inserting a third-party arbiter. However, it is not true public verifiable in a sense, because the arbiter is determined in advance and participates in the whole process. In this paper, a public verifiable protocol for measurement-only BQC is proposed. The fidelity between arbitrary states and the graph states of 2-colorable graphs is estimated by measuring the entanglement witnesses of the graph states,so as to verify the correctness of the prepared graph states. Compared with the previous protocol, our protocol is public verifiable in the true sense by allowing other random clients to execute the public verification. It also has greater advantages in the efficiency, where the number of local measurements is O(n^3*log {n}) and graph states' copies is O(n^2*log{n}).
Fitted finite element methods are constructed for a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem in two space dimensions. Exponential splines as basis functions are combined with Shishkin meshes to obtain a stable parameter-uniform numerical method. These schemes satisfy a discrete maximum principle. In the classical case, the numerical approximations converge, in the maximum pointwise norm, at a rate of second order and the approximations converge at a rate of first order for all values of the singular perturbation parameter.
Semitopologies model consensus in distributed system by equating the notion of a quorum -- a set of participants sufficient to make local progress -- with that of an open set. This yields a topology-like theory of consensus, but semitopologies generalise topologies, since the intersection of two quorums need not necessarily be a quorum. The semitopological model of consensus is naturally heterogeneous and local, just like topologies can be heterogenous and local, and for the same reasons: points may have different quorums and there is no restriction that open sets / quorums be uniformly generated (e.g. open sets can be something other than two-thirds majorities of the points in the space). Semiframes are an algebraic abstraction of semitopologies. They are to semitopologies as frames are to topologies. We give a notion of semifilter, which plays a role analogous to filters, and show how to build a semiframe out of the open sets of a semitopology, and a semitopology out of the semifilters of a semiframe. We define suitable notions of category and morphism and prove a categorical duality between (sober) semiframes and (spatial) semitopologies, and investigate well-behavedness properties on semitopologies and semiframes across the duality. Surprisingly, the structure of semiframes is not what one might initially expect just from looking at semitopologies, and the canonical structure required for the duality result -- a compatibility relation *, generalising sets intersection -- is also canonical for expressing well-behavedness properties. Overall, we deliver a new categorical, algebraic, abstract framework within which to study consensus on distributed systems, and which is also simply interesting to consider as a mathematical theory in its own right.
Cost-sensitive learning is a common type of machine learning problem where different errors of prediction incur different costs. In this paper, we design a generic nonparametric active learning algorithm for cost-sensitive classification. Based on the construction of confidence bounds for the expected prediction cost functions of each label, our algorithm sequentially selects the most informative vector points. Then it interacts with them by only querying the costs of prediction that could be the smallest. We prove that our algorithm attains optimal rate of convergence in terms of the number of interactions with the feature vector space. Furthermore, in terms of a general version of Tsybakov's noise assumption, the gain over the corresponding passive learning is explicitly characterized by the probability-mass of the boundary decision. Additionally, we prove the near-optimality of obtained upper bounds by providing matching (up to logarithmic factor) lower bounds.
This paper presents a physics and data co-driven surrogate modeling method for efficient rare event simulation of civil and mechanical systems with high-dimensional input uncertainties. The method fuses interpretable low-fidelity physical models with data-driven error corrections. The hypothesis is that a well-designed and well-trained simplified physical model can preserve salient features of the original model, while data-fitting techniques can fill the remaining gaps between the surrogate and original model predictions. The coupled physics-data-driven surrogate model is adaptively trained using active learning, aiming to achieve a high correlation and small bias between the surrogate and original model responses in the critical parametric region of a rare event. A final importance sampling step is introduced to correct the surrogate model-based probability estimations. Static and dynamic problems with input uncertainties modeled by random field and stochastic process are studied to demonstrate the proposed method.
Data-driven algorithm design is a promising, learning-based approach for beyond worst-case analysis of algorithms with tunable parameters. An important open problem is the design of computationally efficient data-driven algorithms for combinatorial algorithm families with multiple parameters. As one fixes the problem instance and varies the parameters, the "dual" loss function typically has a piecewise-decomposable structure, i.e. is well-behaved except at certain sharp transition boundaries. In this work we initiate the study of techniques to develop efficient ERM learning algorithms for data-driven algorithm design by enumerating the pieces of the sum dual loss functions for a collection of problem instances. The running time of our approach scales with the actual number of pieces that appear as opposed to worst case upper bounds on the number of pieces. Our approach involves two novel ingredients -- an output-sensitive algorithm for enumerating polytopes induced by a set of hyperplanes using tools from computational geometry, and an execution graph which compactly represents all the states the algorithm could attain for all possible parameter values. We illustrate our techniques by giving algorithms for pricing problems, linkage-based clustering and dynamic-programming based sequence alignment.
We introduce a flexible method to simultaneously infer both the drift and volatility functions of a discretely observed scalar diffusion. We introduce spline bases to represent these functions and develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to infer, a posteriori, the coefficients of these functions in the spline basis. A key innovation is that we use spline bases to model transformed versions of the drift and volatility functions rather than the functions themselves. The output of the algorithm is a posterior sample of plausible drift and volatility functions that are not constrained to any particular parametric family. The flexibility of this approach provides practitioners a powerful investigative tool, allowing them to posit a variety of parametric models to better capture the underlying dynamics of their processes of interest. We illustrate the versatility of our method by applying it to challenging datasets from finance, paleoclimatology, and astrophysics. In view of the parametric diffusion models widely employed in the literature for those examples, some of our results are surprising since they call into question some aspects of these models.
Strong-form meshless methods received much attention in recent years and are being extensively researched and applied to a wide range of problems in science and engineering. However, the solution of elasto-plastic problems has proven to be elusive because of often non-smooth constitutive relations between stress and strain. The novelty in tackling them is the introduction of virtual finite difference stencils to formulate a hybrid radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) method, which is used to solve smallstrain von Mises elasto-plasticity for the first time by this original approach. The paper further contrasts the new method to two alternative legacy RBF-FD approaches, which fail when applied to this class of problems. The three approaches differ in the discretization of the divergence operator found in the balance equation that acts on the non-smooth stress field. Additionally, an innovative stabilization technique is employed to stabilize boundary conditions and is shown to be essential for any of the approaches to converge successfully. Approaches are assessed on elastic and elasto-plastic benchmarks where admissible ranges of newly introduced free parameters are studied regarding stability, accuracy, and convergence rate.
