Security ceremonies still fail despite decades of efforts by researchers and practitioners. Attacks are often a cunning amalgam of exploits for technical systems and of forms of human behaviour. For example, this is the case with the recent news headline of a large-scale attack against Electrum Bitcoin wallets, which manages to spread a malicious update of the wallet app. I therefore set out to look at things through a different lens. I make the (metaphorical) hypothesis that human ancestors arrived on Earth along with security ceremonies from a very far planet, the Cybersecurity planet. My hypothesis continues, in that studying (by huge telescopes) the surface of Cybersecurity in combination with the logical projection on that surface of what happens on Earth is beneficial for us earthlings. I have spotted four cities so far on the remote planet. Democratic City features security ceremonies that allow inhabitants to follow personal paths of practice and, for example, make errors or be driven by emotions. By contrast, security ceremonies in Dictatorial City compel inhabitants to comply, thus behaving like programmed automata. Security ceremonies in Beautiful City are so beautiful that inhabitants just love to follow them precisely. Invisible City has security ceremonies that are not perceivable, hence inhabitants feel like they never encounter any. Incidentally, we use the words "democratic" and "dictatorial" without any political connotation. A key argument I shall develop is that all cities but Democratic City address the human factor, albeit in different ways. In the light of these findings, I will also discuss security ceremonies of our planet, such as WhatsApp web login and flight boarding, and explore room for improving them based upon the current understanding of Cybersecurity.

Cities often lack up-to-date data analytics to evaluate and implement transport planning interventions to achieve sustainability goals, as traditional data sources are expensive, infrequent, and suffer from data latency. Mobile phone data provide an inexpensive source of geospatial information to capture human mobility at unprecedented geographic and temporal granularity. This paper proposes a method to estimate updated mode of transportation usage in a city, with novel usage of mobile phone application traces to infer previously hard to detect modes, such as bikes and ride-hailing/taxi. By using data fusion and matrix factorisation, we integrate socioeconomic and demographic attributes of the local resident population into the model. We tested the method in a case study of Santiago (Chile), and found that changes from 2012 to 2020 in mode of transportation inferred by the method are coherent with expectations from domain knowledge and the literature, such as ride-hailing trips replacing mass transport.

The human footprint is having a unique set of ridges unmatched by any other human being, and therefore it can be used in different identity documents for example birth certificate, Indian biometric identification system AADHAR card, driving license, PAN card, and passport. There are many instances of the crime scene where an accused must walk around and left the footwear impressions as well as barefoot prints and therefore, it is very crucial to recovering the footprints from identifying the criminals. Footprint-based biometric is a considerably newer technique for personal identification. Fingerprints, retina, iris and face recognition are the methods most useful for attendance record of the person. This time the world is facing the problem of global terrorism. It is challenging to identify the terrorist because they are living as regular as the citizens do. Their soft target includes the industries of special interests such as defence, silicon and nanotechnology chip manufacturing units, pharmacy sectors. They pretend themselves as religious persons, so temples and other holy places, even in markets is in their targets. These are the places where one can obtain their footprints quickly. The gait itself is sufficient to predict the behaviour of the suspects. The present research is driven to identify the usefulness of footprint and gait as an alternative to personal identification.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the emerging technologies that has grabbed the attention of researchers from academia and industry. The idea behind Internet of things is the interconnection of internet enabled things or devices to each other and to humans, to achieve some common goals. In near future IoT is expected to be seamlessly integrated into our environment and human will be wholly solely dependent on this technology for comfort and easy life style. Any security compromise of the system will directly affect human life. Therefore security and privacy of this technology is foremost important issue to resolve. In this paper we present a thorough study of security problems in IoT and classify possible cyberattacks on each layer of IoT architecture. We also discuss challenges to traditional security solutions such as cryptographic solutions, authentication mechanisms and key management in IoT. Device authentication and access controls is an essential area of IoT security, which is not surveyed so far. We spent our efforts to bring the state of the art device authentication and access control techniques on a single paper.

Smart contracts have recently been adopted by many security protocols. However, existing studies lack satisfactory theoretical support on how contracts benefit security protocols. This paper aims to give a systematic analysis of smart contract (SC)-based security protocols to fulfill the gap of unclear arguments and statements. We firstly investigate \textit{state of the art studies} and establish a formalized model of smart contract protocols with well-defined syntax and assumptions. Then, we apply our formal framework to two concrete instructions to explore corresponding advantages and desirable properties. Through our analysis, we abstract three generic properties (\textit{non-repudiation, non-equivocation, and non-frameability}) and accordingly identify two patterns. (1) a smart contract can be as an autonomous subscriber to assist the trusted third party (TTP); (2) a smart contract can replace traditional TTP. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to provide in-depth discussions of SC-based security protocols from a strictly theoretical perspective.

The growing complexity of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and challenges in ensuring safety and security have led to the increasing use of deep learning methods for accurate and scalable anomaly detection. However, machine learning (ML) models often suffer from low performance in predicting unexpected data and are vulnerable to accidental or malicious perturbations. Although robustness testing of deep learning models has been extensively explored in applications such as image classification and speech recognition, less attention has been paid to ML-driven safety monitoring in CPS. This paper presents the preliminary results on evaluating the robustness of ML-based anomaly detection methods in safety-critical CPS against two types of accidental and malicious input perturbations, generated using a Gaussian-based noise model and the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM). We test the hypothesis of whether integrating the domain knowledge (e.g., on unsafe system behavior) with the ML models can improve the robustness of anomaly detection without sacrificing accuracy and transparency. Experimental results with two case studies of Artificial Pancreas Systems (APS) for diabetes management show that ML-based safety monitors trained with domain knowledge can reduce on average up to 54.2% of robustness error and keep the average F1 scores high while improving transparency.

Cryptocurrency has been extensively studied as a decentralized financial technology built on blockchain. However, there is a lack of understanding of user experience with cryptocurrency exchanges, the main means for novice users to interact with cryptocurrency. We conduct a qualitative study to provide a panoramic view of user experience and security perception of exchanges. All 15 Chinese participants mainly use centralized exchanges (CEX) instead of decentralized exchanges (DEX) to trade decentralized cryptocurrency, which is paradoxical. A closer examination reveals that CEXes provide better usability and charge lower transaction fee than DEXes. Country-specific security perceptions are observed. Though DEXes provide better anonymity and privacy protection, and are free of governmental regulation, these are not necessary features for many participants. Based on the findings, we propose design implications to make cryptocurrency trading more decentralized.

As a distributed learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) faces the communication bottleneck issue due to many rounds of model synchronization and aggregation. Heterogeneous data further deteriorates the situation by causing slow convergence. Although the impact of data heterogeneity on supervised FL has been widely studied, the related investigation for Federated Reinforcement Learning (FRL) is still in its infancy. In this paper, we first define the type and level of data heterogeneity for policy gradient based FRL systems. By inspecting the connection between the global and local objective functions, we prove that local training can benefit the global objective, if the local update is properly penalized by the total variation (TV) distance between the local and global policies. A necessary condition for the global policy to be learn-able from the local policy is also derived, which is directly related to the heterogeneity level. Based on the theoretical result, a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence based penalty is proposed, which, different from the conventional method that penalizes the model divergence in the parameter space, directly constrains the model outputs in the distribution space. By jointly penalizing the divergence of the local policy from the global policy with a global penalty and constraining each iteration of the local training with a local penalty, the proposed method achieves a better trade-off between training speed (step size) and convergence. Experiment results on two popular RL experiment platforms demonstrate the advantage of the proposed algorithm over existing methods in accelerating and stabilizing the training process with heterogeneous data.

This extensive revision of my paper "Description of an $O(\text{poly}(n))$ Algorithm for NP-Complete Combinatorial Problems" will dramatically simplify the content of the original paper by solving subset-sum instead of $3$-SAT. I will first define the "product-derivative" method which will be used to generate a system of equations for solving unknown polynomial coefficients. Then I will describe the "Dragonfly" algorithm usable to solve subset-sum in $O(n^{16}\log(n))$ which is itself composed of a set of symbolic algebra steps on monic polynomials to convert a subset, $S_T$, of a set of positive integers, $S$, with a given target sum, $T$ into a polynomial with roots corresponding to the elements of $S_T$.

Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is critical to ensuring the reliability and safety of machine learning systems. For instance, in autonomous driving, we would like the driving system to issue an alert and hand over the control to humans when it detects unusual scenes or objects that it has never seen before and cannot make a safe decision. This problem first emerged in 2017 and since then has received increasing attention from the research community, leading to a plethora of methods developed, ranging from classification-based to density-based to distance-based ones. Meanwhile, several other problems are closely related to OOD detection in terms of motivation and methodology. These include anomaly detection (AD), novelty detection (ND), open set recognition (OSR), and outlier detection (OD). Despite having different definitions and problem settings, these problems often confuse readers and practitioners, and as a result, some existing studies misuse terms. In this survey, we first present a generic framework called generalized OOD detection, which encompasses the five aforementioned problems, i.e., AD, ND, OSR, OOD detection, and OD. Under our framework, these five problems can be seen as special cases or sub-tasks, and are easier to distinguish. Then, we conduct a thorough review of each of the five areas by summarizing their recent technical developments. We conclude this survey with open challenges and potential research directions.

Deep Learning algorithms have achieved the state-of-the-art performance for Image Classification and have been used even in security-critical applications, such as biometric recognition systems and self-driving cars. However, recent works have shown those algorithms, which can even surpass the human capabilities, are vulnerable to adversarial examples. In Computer Vision, adversarial examples are images containing subtle perturbations generated by malicious optimization algorithms in order to fool classifiers. As an attempt to mitigate these vulnerabilities, numerous countermeasures have been constantly proposed in literature. Nevertheless, devising an efficient defense mechanism has proven to be a difficult task, since many approaches have already shown to be ineffective to adaptive attackers. Thus, this self-containing paper aims to provide all readerships with a review of the latest research progress on Adversarial Machine Learning in Image Classification, however with a defender's perspective. Here, novel taxonomies for categorizing adversarial attacks and defenses are introduced and discussions about the existence of adversarial examples are provided. Further, in contrast to exisiting surveys, it is also given relevant guidance that should be taken into consideration by researchers when devising and evaluating defenses. Finally, based on the reviewed literature, it is discussed some promising paths for future research.
