In this letter, we investigate the discrete phase shift design of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a time division duplexing (TDD) multi-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. We modify the design of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) scheme so that we can maximizing the average downlink data transmission rate free from the sub-channel channel state information (CSI). Based on the characteristics of the model, we modify the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm and integrate gated recurrent unit (GRU) to tackle the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed PPO-GRU surpasses the benchmarks in terms of performance, convergence speed, and training stability.

In this paper, we present a simultaneous exploration and object search framework for the application of autonomous trolley collection. For environment representation, a task-oriented environment partitioning algorithm is presented to extract diverse information for each sub-task. First, LiDAR data is classified as potential objects, walls, and obstacles after outlier removal. Segmented point clouds are then transformed into a hybrid map with the following functional components: object proposals to avoid missing trolleys during exploration; room layouts for semantic space segmentation; and polygonal obstacles containing geometry information for efficient motion planning. For exploration and simultaneous trolley collection, we propose an efficient exploration-based object search method. First, a traveling salesman problem with precedence constraints (TSP-PC) is formulated by grouping frontiers and object proposals. The next target is selected by prioritizing object search while avoiding excessive robot backtracking. Then, feasible trajectories with adequate obstacle clearance are generated by topological graph search. We validate the proposed framework through simulations and demonstrate the system with real-world autonomous trolley collection tasks.

This letter describes an incremental multimodal surface mapping methodology, which represents the environment as a continuous probabilistic model. This model enables high-resolution reconstruction while simultaneously compressing spatial and intensity point cloud data. The strategy employed in this work utilizes Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) to represent the environment. While prior GMM-based mapping works have developed methodologies to determine the number of mixture components using information-theoretic techniques, these approaches either operate on individual sensor observations, making them unsuitable for incremental mapping, or are not real-time viable, especially for applications where high-fidelity modeling is required. To bridge this gap, this letter introduces a spatial hash map for rapid GMM submap extraction combined with an approach to determine relevant and redundant data in a point cloud. These contributions increase computational speed by an order of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art incremental GMM-based mapping. In addition, the proposed approach yields a superior tradeoff in map accuracy and size when compared to state-of-the-art mapping methodologies (both GMM- and not GMM-based). Evaluations are conducted using both simulated and real-world data. The software is released open-source to benefit the robotics community.

In this article we consider the estimation of static parameters for partially observed diffusion process with discrete-time observations over a fixed time interval. In particular, we assume that one must time-discretize the partially observed diffusion process and work with the model with bias and consider maximizing the resulting log-likelihood. Using a novel double randomization scheme, based upon Markovian stochastic approximation we develop a new method to unbiasedly estimate the static parameters, that is, to obtain the maximum likelihood estimator with no time discretization bias. Under assumptions we prove that our estimator is unbiased and investigate the method in several numerical examples, showing that it can empirically out-perform existing unbiased methodology.

In the presented work, we propose to apply the framework of graph neural networks (GNNs) to predict the dynamics of a rolling element bearing. This approach offers generalizability and interpretability, having the potential for scalable use in real-time operational digital twin systems for monitoring the health state of rotating machines. By representing the bearing's components as nodes in a graph, the GNN can effectively model the complex relationships and interactions among them. We utilize a dynamic spring-mass-damper model of a bearing to generate the training data for the GNN. In this model, discrete masses represent bearing components such as rolling elements, inner raceways, and outer raceways, while a Hertzian contact model is employed to calculate the forces between these components. We evaluate the learning and generalization capabilities of the proposed GNN framework by testing different bearing configurations that deviate from the training configurations. Through this approach, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the GNN-based method in accurately predicting the dynamics of rolling element bearings, highlighting its potential for real-time health monitoring of rotating machinery.

In this work, we develop a novel efficient quadrature and sparse grid based polynomial interpolation method to price American options with multiple underlying assets. The approach is based on first formulating the pricing of American options using dynamic programming, and then employing static sparse grids to interpolate the continuation value function at each time step. To achieve high efficiency, we first transform the domain from $\mathbb{R}^d$ to $(-1,1)^d$ via a scaled tanh map, and then remove the boundary singularity of the resulting multivariate function over $(-1,1)^d$ by a bubble function and simultaneously, to significantly reduce the number of interpolation points. We rigorously establish that with a proper choice of the bubble function, the resulting function has bounded mixed derivatives up to a certain order, which provides theoretical underpinnings for the use of sparse grids. Numerical experiments for American arithmetic and geometric basket put options with the number of underlying assets up to 16 are presented to validate the effectiveness of the approach.

In this paper, we aim at maximizing the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in multi-user multi-antenna transmission networks through the joint optimization of rate allocation and beamforming. Unlike conventional methods like weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) and standard fractional programming (FP), which tackle the non-convex WSR problem iteratively using disciplined convex subproblems and optimization toolboxes, our work pioneers a novel toolbox-free approach. For the first time, we identify the optimal beamforming structure and common rate allocation for WSR maximization in RSMA by leveraging FP and Lagrangian duality. Then we propose an algorithm based on FP and fixed point iteration to optimize the beamforming and common rate allocation without the need for optimization toolboxes. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm attains the same performance as standard FP and classical WMMSE methods while significantly reducing computational time.

In this paper, we propose simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. The considered STAR-RIS utilizes the mode switching (MS) protocol to serve multiple NOMA users located on both sides of the RIS surface. Based on the MS protocol, each STAR-RIS element can operate in full transmission or reflection mode. Within this perspective, we propose a novel algorithm to partition the STAR-RIS surface among the available users. This algorithm aims to determine the proper number of transmitting/reflecting elements needs to be assigned to each user in order to maximize the system sum-rate while guaranteeing the quality-of-service requirements for individual users. For the proposed system, we derive closed-form analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and its corresponding asymptotic behavior under different user deployments. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are performed in order to verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis. It is shown that the proposed system outperforms the classical NOMA and orthogonal multiple access systems in terms of OP and sum-rate.

In this paper, we study an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided communication system with single-antenna transmitter and receiver, under imperfect channel state information (CSI). More specifically, we deal with the robust selection of binary (on/off) states of the IRS elements in order to maximize the worst-case energy efficiency (EE), given a bounded CSI uncertainty, while satisfying a minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In addition, we consider not only continuous but also discrete IRS phase shifts. First, we derive closed-form expressions of the worst-case SNRs, and then formulate the robust (discrete) optimization problems for each case. In the case of continuous phase shifts, we design a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm that is theoretically guaranteed to achieve the global maximum with polynomial complexity $O(L\,{\log L})$, where $L$ is the number of IRS elements. In the case of discrete phase shifts, we develop a convex-relaxation-based method (CRBM) to obtain a feasible (sub-optimal) solution in polynomial time $O(L^{3.5})$, with a posteriori performance guarantee. Furthermore, numerical simulations provide useful insights and confirm the theoretical results. In particular, the proposed algorithms are several orders of magnitude faster than the exhaustive search when $L$ is large, thus being highly scalable and suitable for practical applications. Moreover, both algorithms outperform a baseline scheme, namely, the activation of all IRS elements.

In this work, we propose to utilize a variational autoencoder (VAE) for channel estimation (CE) in underdetermined (UD) systems. The basis of the method forms a recently proposed concept in which a VAE is trained on channel state information (CSI) data and used to parameterize an approximation to the mean squared error (MSE)-optimal estimator. The contributions in this work extend the existing framework from fully-determined (FD) to UD systems, which are of high practical relevance. Particularly noteworthy is the extension of the estimator variant, which does not require perfect CSI during its offline training phase. This is a significant advantage compared to most other deep learning (DL)-based CE methods, where perfect CSI during the training phase is a crucial prerequisite. Numerical simulations for hybrid and wideband systems demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed methods compared to related estimators.

In this paper, we propose a conceptually simple and geometrically interpretable objective function, i.e. additive margin Softmax (AM-Softmax), for deep face verification. In general, the face verification task can be viewed as a metric learning problem, so learning large-margin face features whose intra-class variation is small and inter-class difference is large is of great importance in order to achieve good performance. Recently, Large-margin Softmax and Angular Softmax have been proposed to incorporate the angular margin in a multiplicative manner. In this work, we introduce a novel additive angular margin for the Softmax loss, which is intuitively appealing and more interpretable than the existing works. We also emphasize and discuss the importance of feature normalization in the paper. Most importantly, our experiments on LFW BLUFR and MegaFace show that our additive margin softmax loss consistently performs better than the current state-of-the-art methods using the same network architecture and training dataset.
