The rising trend of using voice as a means of interacting with smart devices has sparked worries over the protection of users' privacy and data security. These concerns have become more pressing, especially after the European Union's adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The information contained in an utterance encompasses critical personal details about the speaker, such as their age, gender, socio-cultural origins and more. If there is a security breach and the data is compromised, attackers may utilise the speech data to circumvent the speaker verification systems or imitate authorised users. Therefore, it is pertinent to anonymise the speech data before being shared across devices, such that the source speaker of the utterance cannot be traced. Voice conversion (VC) can be used to achieve speech anonymisation, which involves altering the speaker's characteristics while preserving the linguistic content.
This paper addresses the problem of anticipating the next-active-object location in the future, for a given egocentric video clip where the contact might happen, before any action takes place. The problem is considerably hard, as we aim at estimating the position of such objects in a scenario where the observed clip and the action segment are separated by the so-called ``time to contact'' (TTC) segment. Many methods have been proposed to anticipate the action of a person based on previous hand movements and interactions with the surroundings. However, there have been no attempts to investigate the next possible interactable object, and its future location with respect to the first-person's motion and the field-of-view drift during the TTC window. We define this as the task of Anticipating the Next ACTive Object (ANACTO). To this end, we propose a transformer-based self-attention framework to identify and locate the next-active-object in an egocentric clip. We benchmark our method on three datasets: EpicKitchens-100, EGTEA+ and Ego4D. We also provide annotations for the first two datasets. Our approach performs best compared to relevant baseline methods. We also conduct ablation studies to understand the effectiveness of the proposed and baseline methods on varying conditions. Code and ANACTO task annotations will be made available upon paper acceptance.
Although large language models (LLMs) have advanced the state-of-the-art in NLP significantly, deploying them for downstream applications is still challenging due to cost, responsiveness, control, or concerns around privacy and security. As such, trainable models are still the preferred option in some cases. However, these models still require human-labeled data for optimal performance, which is expensive and time-consuming to obtain. In order to address this issue, several techniques to reduce human effort involve labeling or generating data using LLMs. Although these methods are effective for certain applications, in practice they encounter difficulties in real-world scenarios. Labeling data requires careful data selection, while generating data necessitates task-specific prompt engineering. In this paper, we propose a unified data creation pipeline that requires only a single formatting example, and which is applicable to a broad range of tasks, including traditionally problematic ones with semantically devoid label spaces. In our experiments we demonstrate that instruction-following LLMs are highly cost-effective data creators, and that models trained with these data exhibit performance better than those trained with human-labeled data (by up to 17.5%) on out-of-distribution evaluation, while maintaining comparable performance on in-distribution tasks. These results have important implications for the robustness of NLP systems deployed in the real-world.
Nonlinear distortion stemming from low-cost power amplifiers may severely affect wireless communication performance through out-of-band (OOB) radiation and in-band distortion. The distortion is correlated between different transmit antennas in an antenna array, which results in a beamforming gain at the receiver side that grows with the number of antennas. In this paper, we investigate how the strength of the distortion is affected by the frequency selectivity of the channel. A closed-form expression for the received distortion power is derived as a function of the number of multipath components (MPCs) and the delay spread, which highlight their impact. The performed analysis, which is verified via numerical simulations, reveals that as the number of MPCs increases, distortion exhibits distinct characteristics for in-band and OOB frequencies. It is shown that the received in-band and OOB distortion power is inversely proportional to the number of MPCs, and it is reported that as the delay spread gets narrower, the in-band distortion power is beamformed towards the intended user, which yields higher received in-band distortion compared to the OOB distortion.
Recommender systems play a crucial role in helping users discover information that aligns with their interests based on their past behaviors. However, developing personalized recommendation systems becomes challenging when historical records of user-item interactions are unavailable, leading to what is known as the system cold-start recommendation problem. This issue is particularly prominent in start-up businesses or platforms with insufficient user engagement history. Previous studies focus on user or item cold-start scenarios, where systems could make recommendations for new users or items but are still trained with historical user-item interactions in the same domain, which cannot solve our problem. To bridge the gap, our research introduces an innovative and effective approach, capitalizing on the capabilities of pre-trained language models. We transform the recommendation process into sentiment analysis of natural languages containing information of user profiles and item attributes, where the sentiment polarity is predicted with prompt learning. By harnessing the extensive knowledge housed within language models, the prediction can be made without historical user-item interaction records. A benchmark is also introduced to evaluate the proposed method under the cold-start setting, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to tackle the system cold-start recommendation problem. Artistic style transfer, a captivating application of generative artificial intelligence, involves fusing the content of one image with the artistic style of another to create unique visual compositions. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of a novel technique for style transfer using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). By leveraging deep image representations learned by CNNs, we demonstrate how to separate and manipulate image content and style, enabling the synthesis of high-quality images that combine content and style in a harmonious manner. We describe the methodology, including content and style representations, loss computation, and optimization, and showcase experimental results highlighting the effectiveness and versatility of the approach across different styles and content
CLIP, one of the pioneering foundation models that connect images and text, has enabled many recent breakthroughs in computer vision. However, its associated training cost is prohibitively high, imposing a significant barrier to its widespread exploration. In this paper, we present a surprising finding that there exists an inverse scaling law for CLIP training, whereby the larger the image/text encoders used, the shorter the sequence length of image/text tokens that can be applied in training. Moreover, we showcase that the strategy for reducing image/text token length plays a crucial role in determining the quality of this scaling law. As a result of this finding, we are able to successfully train CLIP even with limited computational resources. For example, using 8 A100 GPUs, our CLIP models achieve zero-shot top-1 ImageNet-1k accuracies of 63.2% in ~2 days, 67.8% in ~3 days, and 69.3% in ~4 days. Our method also works well when scaling up -- with G/14, we register a new record of 83.0% ImageNet-1k zero-shot accuracy, and meanwhile accelerate the training by ~33x compared to its OpenCLIP counterpart. By reducing the computation barrier associated with CLIP, we hope to inspire more research in this field, particularly from academics. Our code is available at //github.com/UCSC-VLAA/CLIPA.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools have become increasingly prevalent in software development, offering assistance to various managerial and technical project activities. Notable examples of these tools include OpenAIs ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Amazon CodeWhisperer. Although many recent publications have explored and evaluated the application of GenAI, a comprehensive understanding of the current development, applications, limitations, and open challenges remains unclear to many. Particularly, we do not have an overall picture of the current state of GenAI technology in practical software engineering usage scenarios. We conducted a literature review and focus groups for a duration of five months to develop a research agenda on GenAI for Software Engineering. We identified 78 open Research Questions (RQs) in 11 areas of Software Engineering. Our results show that it is possible to explore the adoption of GenAI in partial automation and support decision-making in all software development activities. While the current literature is skewed toward software implementation, quality assurance and software maintenance, other areas, such as requirements engineering, software design, and software engineering education, would need further research attention. Common considerations when implementing GenAI include industry-level assessment, dependability and accuracy, data accessibility, transparency, and sustainability aspects associated with the technology. GenAI is bringing significant changes to the field of software engineering. Nevertheless, the state of research on the topic still remains immature. We believe that this research agenda holds significance and practical value for informing both researchers and practitioners about current applications and guiding future research.
When clustering devices at the edge, inter-node latency poses a significant challenge that directly impacts the application performance. In this paper, we experimentally examine the impact that inter-node latency has on application performance by measuring the throughput of an distributed serverless application in a real world testbed. We deploy Knative over a Kubernetes cluster of nodes and emulate networking delay between them to compare the performance of applications when deployed over a single-site versus multiple distributed computing sites. The results show that multi-site edge networks achieve half the throughput compared to a deployment hosted at a single site under low processing times conditions, whereas the throughput performance significantly improves otherwise.
Vast amount of data generated from networks of sensors, wearables, and the Internet of Things (IoT) devices underscores the need for advanced modeling techniques that leverage the spatio-temporal structure of decentralized data due to the need for edge computation and licensing (data access) issues. While federated learning (FL) has emerged as a framework for model training without requiring direct data sharing and exchange, effectively modeling the complex spatio-temporal dependencies to improve forecasting capabilities still remains an open problem. On the other hand, state-of-the-art spatio-temporal forecasting models assume unfettered access to the data, neglecting constraints on data sharing. To bridge this gap, we propose a federated spatio-temporal model -- Cross-Node Federated Graph Neural Network (CNFGNN) -- which explicitly encodes the underlying graph structure using graph neural network (GNN)-based architecture under the constraint of cross-node federated learning, which requires that data in a network of nodes is generated locally on each node and remains decentralized. CNFGNN operates by disentangling the temporal dynamics modeling on devices and spatial dynamics on the server, utilizing alternating optimization to reduce the communication cost, facilitating computations on the edge devices. Experiments on the traffic flow forecasting task show that CNFGNN achieves the best forecasting performance in both transductive and inductive learning settings with no extra computation cost on edge devices, while incurring modest communication cost.
Recommender systems play a crucial role in mitigating the problem of information overload by suggesting users' personalized items or services. The vast majority of traditional recommender systems consider the recommendation procedure as a static process and make recommendations following a fixed strategy. In this paper, we propose a novel recommender system with the capability of continuously improving its strategies during the interactions with users. We model the sequential interactions between users and a recommender system as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and leverage Reinforcement Learning (RL) to automatically learn the optimal strategies via recommending trial-and-error items and receiving reinforcements of these items from users' feedbacks. In particular, we introduce an online user-agent interacting environment simulator, which can pre-train and evaluate model parameters offline before applying the model online. Moreover, we validate the importance of list-wise recommendations during the interactions between users and agent, and develop a novel approach to incorporate them into the proposed framework LIRD for list-wide recommendations. The experimental results based on a real-world e-commerce dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
