This paper is concerned with the optimized Schwarz waveform relaxation method and Ventcel transmission conditions for the linear advection-diffusion equation. A mixed formulation is considered in which the flux variable represents both diffusive and advective flux, and Lagrange multipliers are introduced on the interfaces between nonoverlapping subdomains to handle tangential derivatives in the Ventcel conditions. A space-time interface problem is formulated and is solved iteratively. Each iteration involves the solution of time-dependent problems with Ventcel boundary conditions in the subdomains. The subdomain problems are discretized in space by a mixed hybrid finite element method based on the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas space and in time by the backward Euler method. The proposed algorithm is fully implicit and enables different time steps in the subdomains. Numerical results with discontinuous coefficients and various Pecl\'et numbers validate the accuracy of the method with nonconforming time grids and confirm the improved convergence properties of Ventcel conditions over Robin conditions.

The local convergence of alternating optimization methods with overrelaxation for low-rank matrix and tensor problems is established. The analysis is based on the linearization of the method which takes the form of an SOR iteration for a positive semidefinite Hessian and can be studied in the corresponding quotient geometry of equivalent low-rank representations. In the matrix case, the optimal relaxation parameter for accelerating the local convergence can be determined from the convergence rate of the standard method. This result relies on a version of Young's SOR theorem for positive semidefinite $2 \times 2$ block systems.

We propose and analyse an augmented mixed finite element method for the Navier--Stokes equations written in terms of velocity, vorticity, and pressure with non-constant viscosity and no-slip boundary conditions. The weak formulation includes least-squares terms arising from the constitutive equation and from the incompressibility condition, and we use a fixed point strategies to show the existence and uniqueness of continuous and discrete solutions under the assumption of sufficiently small data. The method is constructed using any compatible finite element pair (conforming or non-conforming) for velocity and pressure as dictated by Stokes inf-sup stability, while for vorticity any generic discrete space (of arbitrary order) can be used. We establish optimal a priori error estimates. Finally, we provide a set of numerical tests in 2D and 3D illustrating the behaviour of the scheme as well as verifying the theoretical convergence rates.

We study downlink channel estimation in a multi-cell Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system operating in time-division duplex. The users must know their effective channel gains to decode their received downlink data. Previous works have used the mean value as the estimate, motivated by channel hardening. However, this is associated with a performance loss in non-isotropic scattering environments. We propose two novel estimation methods that can be applied without downlink pilots. The first method is model-based and asymptotic arguments are utilized to identify a connection between the effective channel gain and the average received power during a coherence interval. The second method is data-driven and trains a neural network to identify a mapping between the available information and the effective channel gain. Both methods can be utilized for any channel distribution and precoding. For the model-aided method, we derive all expressions in closed form for the case when maximum ratio or zero-forcing precoding is used. We compare the proposed methods with the state-of-the-art using the normalized mean-squared error and spectral efficiency (SE). The results suggest that the two proposed methods provide better SE than the state-of-the-art when there is a low level of channel hardening, while the performance difference is relatively small with the uncorrelated channel model.

In this paper, the preconditioned TBiCOR and TCORS methods are presented for solving the Sylvester tensor equation. A tensor Lanczos $\mathcal{L}$-Biorthogonalization algorithm (TLB) is derived for solving the Sylvester tensor equation. Two improved TLB methods are presented. One is the biconjugate $\mathcal{L}$-orthogonal residual algorithm in tensor form (TBiCOR), which implements the $LU$ decomposition for the triangular coefficient matrix derived by the TLB method. The other is the conjugate $\mathcal{L}$-orthogonal residual squared algorithm in tensor form (TCORS), which introduces a square operator to the residual of the TBiCOR algorithm. A preconditioner based on the nearest Kronecker product is used to accelerate the TBiCOR and TCORS algorithms, and we obtain the preconditioned TBiCOR algorithm (PTBiCOR) and preconditioned TCORS algorithm (PTCORS). The proposed algorithms are proved to be convergent within finite steps of iteration without roundoff errors. Several examples illustrate that the preconditioned TBiCOR and TCORS algorithms present excellent convergence.

We propose and analyze volume-preserving parametric finite element methods for surface diffusion, conserved mean curvature flow and an intermediate evolution law in an axisymmetric setting. The weak formulations are presented in terms of the generating curves of the axisymmetric surfaces. The proposed numerical methods are based on piecewise linear parametric finite elements. The constructed fully practical schemes satisfy the conservation of the enclosed volume. In addition, we prove the unconditional stability and consider the distribution of vertices for the discretized schemes. The introduced methods are implicit and the resulting nonlinear systems of equations can be solved very efficiently and accurately via the Newton's iterative method. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency of the introduced schemes for computing the considered axisymmetric geometric flows.

We consider Broyden's method and some accelerated schemes for nonlinear equations having a strongly regular singularity of first order with a one-dimensional nullspace. Our two main results are as follows. First, we show that the use of a preceding Newton-like step ensures convergence for starting points in a starlike domain with density 1. This extends the domain of convergence of these methods significantly. Second, we establish that the matrix updates of Broyden's method converge q-linearly with the same asymptotic factor as the iterates. This contributes to the long-standing question whether the Broyden matrices converge by showing that this is indeed the case for the setting at hand. Furthermore, we prove that the Broyden directions violate uniform linear independence, which implies that existing results for convergence of the Broyden matrices cannot be applied. Numerical experiments of high precision confirm the enlarged domain of convergence, the q-linear convergence of the matrix updates, and the lack of uniform linear independence. In addition, they suggest that these results can be extended to singularities of higher order and that Broyden's method can converge r-linearly without converging q-linearly. A common approach to tackle a combinatorial optimization problem is to first solve a continuous relaxation and then round the obtained fractional solution. For the latter, the framework of contention resolution schemes (or CR schemes), introduced by Chekuri, Vondrak, and Zenklusen, is a general and successful tool. A CR scheme takes a fractional point $x$ in a relaxation polytope, rounds each coordinate $x_i$ independently to get a possibly non-feasible set, and then drops some elements in order to satisfy the independence constraints. Intuitively, a CR scheme is $c$-balanced if every element $i$ is selected with probability at least $c \cdot x_i$. It is known that general matroids admit a $(1-1/e)$-balanced CR scheme, and that this is (asymptotically) optimal. This is in particular true for the special case of uniform matroids of rank one. In this work, we provide a simple and explicit monotone CR scheme with a balancedness of $1 - \binom{n}{k}\:\left(1-\frac{k}{n}\right)^{n+1-k}\:\left(\frac{k}{n}\right)^k$, and show that this is optimal. As $n$ grows, this expression converges from above to $1 - e^{-k}k^k/k!$. While this asymptotic bound can be obtained by combining previously known results, these require defining an exponential-sized linear program, as well as using random sampling and the ellipsoid algorithm. Our procedure, on the other hand, has the advantage of being simple and explicit. Moreover, this scheme generalizes into an optimal CR scheme for partition matroids.

Detailed derivations of two bounds of the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) of complex-valued multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are proposed for performance evaluation. Particularly, the lower bound is derived based on a genie-aided MMSE estimator, whereas the upper bound is derived based on a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator. Using the famous relationship between the mutual information (MI) and MMSE, two bounds for the MI are also derived, based on which we discuss the asymptotic behaviours of the average MI in the high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Theoretical analyses suggest that the average MI will converge its maximum as the SNR increases and the diversity order is the same as receive antenna number.

In this paper, we propose to tackle the problem of reducing discrepancies between multiple domains referred to as multi-source domain adaptation and consider it under the target shift assumption: in all domains we aim to solve a classification problem with the same output classes, but with labels' proportions differing across them. We design a method based on optimal transport, a theory that is gaining momentum to tackle adaptation problems in machine learning due to its efficiency in aligning probability distributions. Our method performs multi-source adaptation and target shift correction simultaneously by learning the class probabilities of the unlabeled target sample and the coupling allowing to align two (or more) probability distributions. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world data related to satellite image segmentation task show the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art.

In this paper, we study the optimal convergence rate for distributed convex optimization problems in networks. We model the communication restrictions imposed by the network as a set of affine constraints and provide optimal complexity bounds for four different setups, namely: the function $F(\xb) \triangleq \sum_{i=1}^{m}f_i(\xb)$ is strongly convex and smooth, either strongly convex or smooth or just convex. Our results show that Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent on the dual problem can be executed in a distributed manner and obtains the same optimal rates as in the centralized version of the problem (up to constant or logarithmic factors) with an additional cost related to the spectral gap of the interaction matrix. Finally, we discuss some extensions to the proposed setup such as proximal friendly functions, time-varying graphs, improvement of the condition numbers.
