Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) systems have gained huge interest in recent years, with reference expression comprehension being one of the main challenges. Traditionally human-machine interaction has been mostly limited to speech and visual modalities. However, to allow for more freedom in interaction, recent works have proposed the integration of additional modalities, such as gestures in HMI systems. We consider such an HMI system with pointing gestures and construct a table-top object picking scenario inside a simulated virtual reality (VR) environment to collect data. Previous works for such a task have used deep neural networks to classify the referred object, which lacks transparency. In this work, we propose an interpretable and compositional model, crucial to building robust HMI systems for real-world application, based on a neuro-symbolic approach to tackle this task. Finally we also show the generalizability of our model on unseen environments and report the results.

We describe a novel algorithm for solving general parametric (nonlinear) eigenvalue problems. Our method has two steps: first, high-accuracy solutions of non-parametric versions of the problem are gathered at some values of the parameters; these are then combined to obtain global approximations of the parametric eigenvalues. To gather the non-parametric data, we use non-intrusive contour-integration-based methods, which, however, cannot track eigenvalues that migrate into/out of the contour as the parameter changes. Special strategies are described for performing the combination-over-parameter step despite having only partial information on such "migrating" eigenvalues. Moreover, we dedicate a special focus to the approximation of eigenvalues that undergo bifurcations. Finally, we propose an adaptive strategy that allows one to effectively apply our method even without any a priori information on the behavior of the sought-after eigenvalues. Numerical tests are performed, showing that our algorithm can achieve remarkably high approximation accuracy.

By combining a logarithm transformation with a corrected Milstein-type method, the present article proposes an explicit, unconditional boundary and dynamics preserving scheme for the stochastic susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model that takes value in (0,N). The scheme applied to the model is first proved to have a strong convergence rate of order one. Further, the dynamic behaviors are analyzed for the numerical approximations and it is shown that the scheme can unconditionally preserve both the domain and the dynamics of the model. More precisely, the proposed scheme gives numerical approximations living in the domain (0,N) and reproducing the extinction and persistence properties of the original model for any time discretization step-size h > 0, without any additional requirements on the model parameters. Numerical experiments are presented to verify our theoretical results.

Neural networks have revolutionized the field of machine learning with increased predictive capability. In addition to improving the predictions of neural networks, there is a simultaneous demand for reliable uncertainty quantification on estimates made by machine learning methods such as neural networks. Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) are an important type of neural network with built-in capability for quantifying uncertainty. This paper discusses aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty in BNNs and how they can be calculated. With an example dataset of images where the goal is to identify the amplitude of an event in the image, it is shown that epistemic uncertainty tends to be lower in images which are well-represented in the training dataset and tends to be high in images which are not well-represented. An algorithm for out-of-distribution (OoD) detection with BNN epistemic uncertainty is introduced along with various experiments demonstrating factors influencing the OoD detection capability in a BNN. The OoD detection capability with epistemic uncertainty is shown to be comparable to the OoD detection in the discriminator network of a generative adversarial network (GAN) with comparable network architecture.

A variant of the standard notion of branching bisimilarity for processes with discrete relative timing is proposed which is coarser than the standard notion. Using a version of ACP (Algebra of Communicating Processes) with abstraction for processes with discrete relative timing, it is shown that the proposed variant allows of both the functional correctness and the performance properties of the PAR (Positive Acknowledgement with Retransmission) protocol to be analyzed. In the version of ACP concerned, the difference between the standard notion of branching bisimilarity and its proposed variant is characterized by a single axiom schema.

This article presents the openCFS submodule scattered data reader for coupling multi-physical simulations performed in different simulation programs. For instance, by considering a forward-coupling of a surface vibration simulation (mechanical system) to an acoustic propagation simulation using time-dependent acoustic absorbing material as a noise mitigation measure. The nearest-neighbor search of the target and source points from the interpolation is performed using the FLANN or the CGAL library. In doing so, the coupled field (e.g., surface velocity) is interpolated from a source representation consisting of field values physically stored and organized in a file directory to a target representation being the quadrature points in the case of the finite element method. A test case of the functionality is presented in the "testsuite" module of the openCFS software called "Abc2dcsvt". This scattered data reader module was successfully applied in numerous studies on flow-induced sound generation. Within this short article, the functionality, and usability of this module are described.

Stochastic inversion problems are typically encountered when it is wanted to quantify the uncertainty affecting the inputs of computer models. They consist in estimating input distributions from noisy, observable outputs, and such problems are increasingly examined in Bayesian contexts where the targeted inputs are affected by stochastic uncertainties. In this regard, a stochastic input can be qualified as meaningful if it explains most of the output uncertainty. While such inverse problems are characterized by identifiability conditions, constraints of "signal to noise", that can formalize this meaningfulness, should be accounted for within the definition of the model, prior to inference. This article investigates the possibility of forcing a solution to be meaningful in the context of parametric uncertainty quantification, through the tools of global sensitivity analysis and information theory (variance, entropy, Fisher information). Such forcings have mainly the nature of constraints placed on the input covariance, and can be made explicit by considering linear or linearizable models. Simulated experiments indicate that, when injected into the modeling process, these constraints can limit the influence of measurement or process noise on the estimation of the input distribution, and let hope for future extensions in a full non-linear framework, for example through the use of linear Gaussian mixtures.

The main computational cost per iteration of adaptive cubic regularization methods for solving large-scale nonconvex problems is the computation of the step $s_k$, which requires an approximate minimizer of the cubic model. We propose a new approach in which this minimizer is sought in a low dimensional subspace that, in contrast to classical approaches, is reused for a number of iterations. A regularized Newton step to correct $s_k$ is also incorporated whenever needed. We show that our method increases efficiency while preserving the worst-case complexity of classical cubic regularized methods. We also explore the use of rational Krylov subspaces for the subspace minimization, to overcome some of the issues encountered when using polynomial Krylov subspaces. We provide several experimental results illustrating the gains of the new approach when compared to classic implementations.

Hardware implementations of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) represent a promising approach to edge-computing for applications that require low-power and low-latency, and which cannot resort to external cloud-based computing services. However, most solutions proposed so far either support only relatively small networks, or take up significant hardware resources, to implement large networks. To realize large-scale and scalable SNNs it is necessary to develop an efficient asynchronous communication and routing fabric that enables the design of multi-core architectures. In particular the core interface that manages inter-core spike communication is a crucial component as it represents the bottleneck of Power-Performance-Area (PPA) especially for the arbitration architecture and the routing memory. In this paper we present an arbitration mechanism with the corresponding asynchronous encoding pipeline circuits, based on hierarchical arbiter trees. The proposed scheme reduces the latency by more than 70% in sparse-event mode, compared to the state-of-the-art arbitration architectures, with lower area cost. The routing memory makes use of asynchronous Content Addressable Memory (CAM) with Current Sensing Completion Detection (CSCD), which saves approximately 46% energy, and achieves a 40% increase in throughput against conventional asynchronous CAM using configurable delay lines, at the cost of only a slight increase in area. In addition as it radically reduces the core interface resources in multi-core neuromorphic processors, the arbitration architecture and CAM architecture we propose can be also applied to a wide range of general asynchronous circuits and systems.

We present the Continuous Empirical Cubature Method (CECM), a novel algorithm for empirically devising efficient integration rules. The CECM aims to improve existing cubature methods by producing rules that are close to the optimal, featuring far less points than the number of functions to integrate. The CECM consists on a two-stage strategy. First, a point selection strategy is applied for obtaining an initial approximation to the cubature rule, featuring as many points as functions to integrate. The second stage consists in a sparsification strategy in which, alongside the indexes and corresponding weights, the spatial coordinates of the points are also considered as design variables. The positions of the initially selected points are changed to render their associated weights to zero, and in this way, the minimum number of points is achieved. Although originally conceived within the framework of hyper-reduced order models (HROMs), we present the method's formulation in terms of generic vector-valued functions, thereby accentuating its versatility across various problem domains. To demonstrate the extensive applicability of the method, we conduct numerical validations using univariate and multivariate Lagrange polynomials. In these cases, we show the method's capacity to retrieve the optimal Gaussian rule. We also asses the method for an arbitrary exponential-sinusoidal function in a 3D domain, and finally consider an example of the application of the method to the hyperreduction of a multiscale finite element model, showcasing notable computational performance gains. A secondary contribution of the current paper is the Sequential Randomized SVD (SRSVD) approach for computing the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) in a column-partitioned format. The SRSVD is particularly advantageous when matrix sizes approach memory limitations.

Sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is a popular tool for dimensionality reduction in high-dimensional data. However, there is still a lack of theoretically justified Bayesian SPCA methods that can scale well computationally. One of the major challenges in Bayesian SPCA is selecting an appropriate prior for the loadings matrix, considering that principal components are mutually orthogonal. We propose a novel parameter-expanded coordinate ascent variational inference (PX-CAVI) algorithm. This algorithm utilizes a spike and slab prior, which incorporates parameter expansion to cope with the orthogonality constraint. Besides comparing to two popular SPCA approaches, we introduce the PX-EM algorithm as an EM analogue to the PX-CAVI algorithm for comparison. Through extensive numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the PX-CAVI algorithm outperforms these SPCA approaches, showcasing its superiority in terms of performance. We study the posterior contraction rate of the variational posterior, providing a novel contribution to the existing literature. The PX-CAVI algorithm is then applied to study a lung cancer gene expression dataset. The R package VBsparsePCA with an implementation of the algorithm is available on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN).
