Autonomous vehicles are equipped with a multi-modal sensor setup to enable the car to drive safely. The initial calibration of such perception sensors is a highly matured topic and is routinely done in an automated factory environment. However, an intriguing question arises on how to maintain the calibration quality throughout the vehicle's operating duration. Another challenge is to calibrate multiple sensors jointly to ensure no propagation of systemic errors. In this paper, we propose CaLiCa, an end-to-end deep self-calibration network which addresses the automatic calibration problem for pinhole camera and Lidar. We jointly predict the camera intrinsic parameters (focal length and distortion) as well as Lidar-Camera extrinsic parameters (rotation and translation), by regressing feature correlation between the camera image and the Lidar point cloud. The network is arranged in a Siamese-twin structure to constrain the network features learning to a mutually shared feature in both point cloud and camera (Lidar-camera constraint). Evaluation using KITTI datasets shows that we achieve 0.154 {\deg} and 0.059 m accuracy with a reprojection error of 0.028 pixel with a single-pass inference. We also provide an ablative study of how our end-to-end learning architecture offers lower terminal loss (21% decrease in rotation loss) compared to isolated calibration
We argue that there are many notions of 'similarity' and that models, like humans, should be able to adapt to these dynamically. This contrasts with most representation learning methods, supervised or self-supervised, which learn a fixed embedding function and hence implicitly assume a single notion of similarity. For instance, models trained on ImageNet are biased towards object categories, while a user might prefer the model to focus on colors, textures or specific elements in the scene. In this paper, we propose the GeneCIS ('genesis') benchmark, which measures models' ability to adapt to a range of similarity conditions. Extending prior work, our benchmark is designed for zero-shot evaluation only, and hence considers an open-set of similarity conditions. We find that baselines from powerful CLIP models struggle on GeneCIS and that performance on the benchmark is only weakly correlated with ImageNet accuracy, suggesting that simply scaling existing methods is not fruitful. We further propose a simple, scalable solution based on automatically mining information from existing image-caption datasets. We find our method offers a substantial boost over the baselines on GeneCIS, and further improves zero-shot performance on related image retrieval benchmarks. In fact, though evaluated zero-shot, our model surpasses state-of-the-art supervised models on MIT-States. Project page at //sgvaze.github.io/genecis/.
The design of particle simulation methods for collisional plasma physics has always represented a challenge due to the unbounded total collisional cross section, which prevents a natural extension of the classical Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method devised for the Boltzmann equation. One way to overcome this problem is to consider the design of Monte Carlo algorithms that are robust in the so-called grazing collision limit. In the first part of this manuscript, we will focus on the construction of collision algorithms for the Landau-Fokker-Planck equation based on the grazing collision asymptotics and which avoids the use of iterative solvers. Subsequently, we discuss problems involving uncertainties and show how to develop a stochastic Galerkin projection of the particle dynamics which permits to recover spectral accuracy for smooth solutions in the random space. Several classical numerical tests are reported to validate the present approach.
We introduce an approach for solving PDEs over manifolds using physics informed neural networks whose architecture aligns with spectral methods. The networks are trained to take in as input samples of an initial condition, a time stamp and point(s) on the manifold and then output the solution's value at the given time and point(s). We provide proofs of our method for the heat equation on the interval and examples of unique network architectures that are adapted to nonlinear equations on the sphere and the torus. We also show that our spectral-inspired neural network architectures outperform the standard physics informed architectures. Our extensive experimental results include generalization studies where the testing dataset of initial conditions is randomly sampled from a significantly larger space than the training set.
In this paper, we consider the problem of composed image retrieval (CIR), it aims to train a model that can fuse multi-modal information, e.g., text and images, to accurately retrieve images that match the query, extending the user's expression ability. We make the following contributions: (i) we initiate a scalable pipeline to automatically construct datasets for training CIR model, by simply exploiting a large-scale dataset of image-text pairs, e.g., a subset of LAION-5B; (ii) we introduce a transformer-based adaptive aggregation model, TransAgg, which employs a simple yet efficient fusion mechanism, to adaptively combine information from diverse modalities; (iii) we conduct extensive ablation studies to investigate the usefulness of our proposed data construction procedure, and the effectiveness of core components in TransAgg; (iv) when evaluating on the publicly available benckmarks under the zero-shot scenario, i.e., training on the automatically constructed datasets, then directly conduct inference on target downstream datasets, e.g., CIRR and FashionIQ, our proposed approach either performs on par with or significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. In self-driving applications, LiDAR data provides accurate information about distances in 3D but lacks the semantic richness of camera data. Therefore, state-of-the-art methods for perception in urban scenes fuse data from both sensor types. In this work, we introduce a novel self-supervised method to fuse LiDAR and camera data for self-driving applications. We build upon masked autoencoders (MAEs) and train deep learning models to reconstruct masked LiDAR data from fused LiDAR and camera features. In contrast to related methods that use birds-eye-view representations, we fuse features from dense spherical LiDAR projections and features from fish-eye camera crops with a similar field of view. Therefore, we reduce the learned spatial transformations to moderate perspective transformations and do not require additional modules to generate dense LiDAR representations. The classical method of autonomous racing uses real-time localisation to follow a precalculated optimal trajectory. In contrast, end-to-end deep reinforcement learning (DRL) can train agents to race using only raw LiDAR scans. While classical methods prioritise optimization for high-performance racing, DRL approaches have focused on low-performance contexts with little consideration of the speed profile. This work addresses the problem of using end-to-end DRL agents for high-speed autonomous racing. We present trajectory-aided learning (TAL) that trains DRL agents for high-performance racing by incorporating the optimal trajectory (racing line) into the learning formulation. Our method is evaluated using the TD3 algorithm on four maps in the open-source F1Tenth simulator. The results demonstrate that our method achieves a significantly higher lap completion rate at high speeds compared to the baseline. This is due to TAL training the agent to select a feasible speed profile of slowing down in the corners and roughly tracking the optimal trajectory.
Autonomous driving has now made great strides thanks to artificial intelligence, and numerous advanced methods have been proposed for vehicle end target detection, including single sensor or multi sensor detection methods. However, the complexity and diversity of real traffic situations necessitate an examination of how to use these methods in real road conditions. In this paper, we propose RMMDet, a road-side multitype and multigroup sensor detection system for autonomous driving. We use a ROS-based virtual environment to simulate real-world conditions, in particular the physical and functional construction of the sensors. Then we implement muti-type sensor detection and multi-group sensors fusion in this environment, including camera-radar and camera-lidar detection based on result-level fusion. We produce local datasets and real sand table field, and conduct various experiments. Furthermore, we link a multi-agent collaborative scheduling system to the fusion detection system. Hence, the whole roadside detection system is formed by roadside perception, fusion detection, and scheduling planning. Through the experiments, it can be seen that RMMDet system we built plays an important role in vehicle-road collaboration and its optimization. Detecting change-points in data is challenging because of the range of possible types of change and types of behaviour of data when there is no change. Statistically efficient methods for detecting a change will depend on both of these features, and it can be difficult for a practitioner to develop an appropriate detection method for their application of interest. We show how to automatically generate new offline detection methods based on training a neural network. Our approach is motivated by many existing tests for the presence of a change-point being representable by a simple neural network, and thus a neural network trained with sufficient data should have performance at least as good as these methods. We present theory that quantifies the error rate for such an approach, and how it depends on the amount of training data. Empirical results show that, even with limited training data, its performance is competitive with the standard CUSUM-based classifier for detecting a change in mean when the noise is independent and Gaussian, and can substantially outperform it in the presence of auto-correlated or heavy-tailed noise. Our method also shows strong results in detecting and localising changes in activity based on accelerometer data.
As connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) become increasingly prevalent, there is a growing need for simulation platforms that can accurately evaluate CAV behavior in large-scale environments. In this paper, we propose Flowsim, a novel simulator specifically designed to meet these requirements. Flowsim offers a modular and extensible architecture that enables the analysis of CAV behaviors in large-scale scenarios. It provides researchers with a customizable platform for studying CAV interactions, evaluating communication and networking protocols, assessing cybersecurity vulnerabilities, optimizing traffic management strategies, and developing and evaluating policies for CAV deployment. Flowsim is implemented in pure Python in approximately 1,500 lines of code, making it highly readable, understandable, and easily modifiable. We verified the functionality and performance of Flowsim via a series of experiments based on realistic traffic scenarios. The results show the effectiveness of Flowsim in providing a flexible and powerful simulation environment for evaluating CAV behavior and data flow. Flowsim is a valuable tool for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals who are involved in the development, evaluation, and deployment of CAVs. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task learning architecture, which incorporates recent advances in attention mechanisms. Our approach, the Multi-Task Attention Network (MTAN), consists of a single shared network containing a global feature pool, together with task-specific soft-attention modules, which are trainable in an end-to-end manner. These attention modules allow for learning of task-specific features from the global pool, whilst simultaneously allowing for features to be shared across different tasks. The architecture can be built upon any feed-forward neural network, is simple to implement, and is parameter efficient. Experiments on the CityScapes dataset show that our method outperforms several baselines in both single-task and multi-task learning, and is also more robust to the various weighting schemes in the multi-task loss function. We further explore the effectiveness of our method through experiments over a range of task complexities, and show how our method scales well with task complexity compared to baselines.
