Online platforms employ recommendation systems to enhance customer engagement and drive revenue. However, in a multi-sided platform where the platform interacts with diverse stakeholders such as sellers (items) and customers (users), each with their own desired outcomes, finding an appropriate middle ground becomes a complex operational challenge. In this work, we investigate the ``price of fairness'', which captures the platform's potential compromises when balancing the interests of different stakeholders. Motivated by this, we propose a fair recommendation framework where the platform maximizes its revenue while interpolating between item and user fairness constraints. We further examine the fair recommendation problem in a more realistic yet challenging online setting, where the platform lacks knowledge of user preferences and can only observe binary purchase decisions. To address this, we design a low-regret online optimization algorithm that preserves the platform's revenue while achieving fairness for both items and users. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework and proposed method via a case study on MovieLens data.

This paper focuses on the impact of leveraging autonomous offensive approaches in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to train more robust agents by exploring the impact of applying adversarial learning to DRL for autonomous security in Software Defined Networks (SDN). Two algorithms, Double Deep Q-Networks (DDQN) and Neural Episodic Control to Deep Q-Network (NEC2DQN or N2D), are compared. NEC2DQN was proposed in 2018 and is a new member of the deep q-network (DQN) family of algorithms. The attacker has full observability of the environment and access to a causative attack that uses state manipulation in an attempt to poison the learning process. The implementation of the attack is done under a white-box setting, in which the attacker has access to the defender's model and experiences. Two games are played; in the first game, DDQN is a defender and N2D is an attacker, and in second game, the roles are reversed. The games are played twice; first, without an active causative attack and secondly, with an active causative attack. For execution, three sets of game results are recorded in which a single set consists of 10 game runs. The before and after results are then compared in order to see if there was actually an improvement or degradation. The results show that with minute parameter changes made to the algorithms, there was growth in the attacker's role, since it is able to win games. Implementation of the adversarial learning by the introduction of the causative attack showed the algorithms are still able to defend the network according to their strengths.

Computing platforms in autonomous vehicles record large amounts of data from many sensors, process the data through machine learning models, and make decisions to ensure the vehicle's safe operation. Fast, accurate, and reliable decision-making is critical. Traditional computer processors lack the power and flexibility needed for the perception and machine vision demands of advanced autonomous driving tasks. Hardware accelerators are special-purpose coprocessors that help autonomous vehicles meet performance requirements for higher levels of autonomy. This paper provides an overview of ML accelerators with examples of their use for machine vision in autonomous vehicles. We offer recommendations for researchers and practitioners and highlight a trajectory for ongoing and future research in this emerging field.

Perception that involves multi-object detection and tracking, and trajectory prediction are two major tasks of autonomous driving. However, they are currently mostly studied separately, which results in most trajectory prediction modules being developed based on ground truth trajectories without taking into account that trajectories extracted from the detection and tracking modules in real-world scenarios are noisy. These noisy trajectories can have a significant impact on the performance of the trajectory predictor and can lead to serious prediction errors. In this paper, we build an end-to-end framework for detection, tracking, and trajectory prediction called ODTP (Online Detection, Tracking and Prediction). It adopts the state-of-the-art online multi-object tracking model, QD-3DT, for perception and trains the trajectory predictor, DCENet++, directly based on the detection results without purely relying on ground truth trajectories. We evaluate the performance of ODTP on the widely used nuScenes dataset for autonomous driving. Extensive experiments show that ODPT achieves high performance end-to-end trajectory prediction. DCENet++, with the enhanced dynamic maps, predicts more accurate trajectories than its base model. It is also more robust when compared with other generative and deterministic trajectory prediction models trained on noisy detection results.

We present a novel form of Fourier analysis, and associated signal processing concepts, for signals (or data) indexed by edge-weighted directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). This means that our Fourier basis yields an eigendecomposition of a suitable notion of shift and convolution operators that we define. DAGs are the common model to capture causal relationships between data values and in this case our proposed Fourier analysis relates data with its causes under a linearity assumption that we define. The definition of the Fourier transform requires the transitive closure of the weighted DAG for which several forms are possible depending on the interpretation of the edge weights. Examples include level of influence, distance, or pollution distribution. Our framework is different from prior GSP: it is specific to DAGs and leverages, and extends, the classical theory of Moebius inversion from combinatorics. For a prototypical application we consider DAGs modeling dynamic networks in which edges change over time. Specifically, we model the spread of an infection on such a DAG obtained from real-world contact tracing data and learn the infection signal from samples assuming sparsity in the Fourier domain.

Internet of Things (IoT) systems require highly scalable infrastructure to adaptively provide services to meet various performance requirements. Combining Software-Defined Networking (SDN) with Mobile Edge Cloud (MEC) technology brings more flexibility for IoT systems. We present a four-tier task processing architecture for MEC and vehicular networks, which includes processing tasks locally within a vehicle, on neighboring vehicles, on an edge cloud, and on a remote cloud. The flexible network connection is controlled by SDN. We propose a CPU resource allocation algorithm, called Partial Idle Resource Strategy (PIRS) with Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communications, based on Asymmetric Nash Bargaining Solution (ANBS) in Game Theory. PIRS encourages vehicles in the same location to cooperate by sharing part of their spare CPU resources. In our simulations, we adopt four applications running on the vehicles to generate workload. We compare the proposed algorithm with Non-Cooperation Strategy (NCS) and All Idle Resource Strategy (AIRS). In NCS, the vehicles execute tasks generated by the applications in their own On-Board Units (OBU), while in AIRS vehicles provide all their CPU resources to help other vehicles offloading requests. Our simulation results show that our PIRS strategy can execute more tasks on the V2V layer and lead to fewer number of task (and their length) to be offloaded to the cloud, reaching up to 28% improvement compared to NCS and up to 10% improvement compared to AIRS.

Parameter design is significant in ensuring a satisfactory holistic performance of power converters. Generally, circuit parameter design for power converters consists of two processes: analysis and deduction process and optimization process. The existing approaches for parameter design consist of two types: traditional approach and computer-aided optimization (CAO) approach. In the traditional approaches, heavy human-dependence is required. Even though the emerging CAO approaches automate the optimization process, they still require manual analysis and deduction process. To mitigate human-dependence for the sake of high accuracy and easy implementation, an artificial-intelligence-based design (AI-D) approach is proposed in this article for the parameter design of power converters. In the proposed AI-D approach, to achieve automation in the analysis and deduction process, simulation tools and batch-normalization neural network (BN-NN) are adopted to build data-driven models for the optimization objectives and design constraints. Besides, to achieve automation in the optimization process, genetic algorithm is used to search for optimal design results. The proposed AI-D approach is validated in the circuit parameter design of the synchronous buck converter in the 48 to 12 V accessory-load power supply system in electric vehicle. The design case of an efficiency-optimal synchronous buck converter with constraints in volume, voltage ripple, and current ripple is provided. In the end of this article, feasibility and accuracy of the proposed AI-D approach have been validated by hardware experiments.

Existing knowledge graph (KG) embedding models have primarily focused on static KGs. However, real-world KGs do not remain static, but rather evolve and grow in tandem with the development of KG applications. Consequently, new facts and previously unseen entities and relations continually emerge, necessitating an embedding model that can quickly learn and transfer new knowledge through growth. Motivated by this, we delve into an expanding field of KG embedding in this paper, i.e., lifelong KG embedding. We consider knowledge transfer and retention of the learning on growing snapshots of a KG without having to learn embeddings from scratch. The proposed model includes a masked KG autoencoder for embedding learning and update, with an embedding transfer strategy to inject the learned knowledge into the new entity and relation embeddings, and an embedding regularization method to avoid catastrophic forgetting. To investigate the impacts of different aspects of KG growth, we construct four datasets to evaluate the performance of lifelong KG embedding. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art inductive and lifelong embedding baselines.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) is widely used to learn a powerful representation of graph-structured data. Recent work demonstrates that transferring knowledge from self-supervised tasks to downstream tasks could further improve graph representation. However, there is an inherent gap between self-supervised tasks and downstream tasks in terms of optimization objective and training data. Conventional pre-training methods may be not effective enough on knowledge transfer since they do not make any adaptation for downstream tasks. To solve such problems, we propose a new transfer learning paradigm on GNNs which could effectively leverage self-supervised tasks as auxiliary tasks to help the target task. Our methods would adaptively select and combine different auxiliary tasks with the target task in the fine-tuning stage. We design an adaptive auxiliary loss weighting model to learn the weights of auxiliary tasks by quantifying the consistency between auxiliary tasks and the target task. In addition, we learn the weighting model through meta-learning. Our methods can be applied to various transfer learning approaches, it performs well not only in multi-task learning but also in pre-training and fine-tuning. Comprehensive experiments on multiple downstream tasks demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively combine auxiliary tasks with the target task and significantly improve the performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

The recent proliferation of knowledge graphs (KGs) coupled with incomplete or partial information, in the form of missing relations (links) between entities, has fueled a lot of research on knowledge base completion (also known as relation prediction). Several recent works suggest that convolutional neural network (CNN) based models generate richer and more expressive feature embeddings and hence also perform well on relation prediction. However, we observe that these KG embeddings treat triples independently and thus fail to cover the complex and hidden information that is inherently implicit in the local neighborhood surrounding a triple. To this effect, our paper proposes a novel attention based feature embedding that captures both entity and relation features in any given entity's neighborhood. Additionally, we also encapsulate relation clusters and multihop relations in our model. Our empirical study offers insights into the efficacy of our attention based model and we show marked performance gains in comparison to state of the art methods on all datasets.

We present a monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using high level object and plane landmarks, in addition to points. The resulting map is denser, more compact and meaningful compared to point only SLAM. We first propose a high order graphical model to jointly infer the 3D object and layout planes from single image considering occlusions and semantic constraints. The extracted cuboid object and layout planes are further optimized in a unified SLAM framework. Objects and planes can provide more semantic constraints such as Manhattan and object supporting relationships compared to points. Experiments on various public and collected datasets including ICL NUIM and TUM mono show that our algorithm can improve camera localization accuracy compared to state-of-the-art SLAM and also generate dense maps in many structured environments.
