With the increasing demand for mobile robots and autonomous vehicles, several approaches for long-term robot navigation have been proposed. Among these techniques, ground segmentation and traversability estimation play important roles in perception and path planning, respectively. Even though these two techniques appear similar, their objectives are different. Ground segmentation divides data into ground and non-ground elements; thus, it is used as a preprocessing stage to extract objects of interest by rejecting ground points. In contrast, traversability estimation identifies and comprehends areas in which robots can move safely. Nevertheless, some researchers use these terms without clear distinction, leading to misunderstanding the two concepts. Therefore, in this study, we survey related literature and clearly distinguish ground and traversable regions considering four aspects: a) maneuverability of robot platforms, b) position of a robot in the surroundings, c) subset relation of negative obstacles, and d) subset relation of deformable objects.
Safe operation of multi-robot systems is critical, especially in communication-degraded environments such as underwater for seabed mapping, underground caves for navigation, and in extraterrestrial missions for assembly and construction. We address safety of networked autonomous systems where the information exchanged between robots incurs communication delays. We formalize a notion of distributed control barrier function (CBF) for multi-robot systems, a safety certificate amenable to a distributed implementation, which provides formal ground to using graph neural networks to learn safe distributed controllers. Further, we observe that learning a distributed controller ignoring delays can severely degrade safety. Our main contribution is a predictor-based framework to train a safe distributed controller under communication delays, where the current state of nearby robots is predicted from received data and age-of-information. Numerical experiments on multi-robot collision avoidance show that our predictor-based approach can significantly improve the safety of a learned distributed controller under communication delays
In research of manufacturing systems and autonomous robots, the term capability is used for a machine-interpretable specification of a system function. Approaches in this research area develop information models that capture all information relevant to interpret the requirements, effects and behavior of functions. These approaches are intended to overcome the heterogeneity resulting from the various types of processes and from the large number of different vendors. However, these models and associated methods do not offer solutions for automated process planning, i.e. finding a sequence of individual capabilities required to manufacture a certain product or to accomplish a mission using autonomous robots. Instead, this is a typical task for AI planning approaches, which unfortunately require a high effort to create the respective planning problem descriptions. In this paper, we present an approach that combines these two topics: Starting from a semantic capability model, an AI planning problem is automatically generated. The planning problem is encoded using Satisfiability Modulo Theories and uses an existing solver to find valid capability sequences including required parameter values. The approach also offers possibilities to integrate existing human expertise and to provide explanations for human operators in order to help understand planning decisions.
There are many evaluation strategies for term rewrite systems, but proving termination automatically is usually easiest for innermost rewriting. Several syntactic criteria exist when innermost termination implies full termination. We adapt these criteria to the probabilistic setting, e.g., we show when it suffices to analyze almost-sure termination (AST) w.r.t. innermost rewriting to prove full AST of probabilistic term rewrite systems (PTRSs). These criteria also apply to other notions of termination like positive AST. We implemented and evaluated our new contributions in the tool AProVE.
Socially aware robot navigation is gaining popularity with the increase in delivery and assistive robots. The research is further fueled by a need for socially aware navigation skills in autonomous vehicles to move safely and appropriately in spaces shared with humans. Although most of these are ground robots, drones are also entering the field. In this paper, we present a literature survey of the works on socially aware robot navigation in the past 10 years. We propose four different faceted taxonomies to navigate the literature and examine the field from four different perspectives. Through the taxonomic review, we discuss the current research directions and the extending scope of applications in various domains. Further, we put forward a list of current research opportunities and present a discussion on possible future challenges that are likely to emerge in the field.
Large language models have the potential to be valuable in the healthcare industry, but it's crucial to verify their safety and effectiveness through rigorous evaluation. For this purpose, we comprehensively evaluated both open-source LLMs and Google's new multimodal LLM called Gemini across Medical reasoning, hallucination detection, and Medical Visual Question Answering tasks. While Gemini showed competence, it lagged behind state-of-the-art models like MedPaLM 2 and GPT-4 in diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, Gemini achieved an accuracy of 61.45\% on the medical VQA dataset, significantly lower than GPT-4V's score of 88\%. Our analysis revealed that Gemini is highly susceptible to hallucinations, overconfidence, and knowledge gaps, which indicate risks if deployed uncritically. We also performed a detailed analysis by medical subject and test type, providing actionable feedback for developers and clinicians. To mitigate risks, we applied prompting strategies that improved performance. Additionally, we facilitated future research and development by releasing a Python module for medical LLM evaluation and establishing a dedicated leaderboard on Hugging Face for medical domain LLMs. Python module can be found at //github.com/promptslab/RosettaEval
Autonomous robot navigation within the dynamic unknown environment is of crucial significance for mobile robotic applications including robot navigation in last-mile delivery and robot-enabled automated supplies in industrial and hospital delivery applications. Current solutions still suffer from limitations, such as the robot cannot recognize unknown objects in real time and cannot navigate freely in a dynamic, narrow, and complex environment. We propose a complete software framework for autonomous robot perception and navigation within very dense obstacles and dense human crowds. First, we propose a framework that accurately detects and segments open-world object categories in a zero-shot manner, which overcomes the over-segmentation limitation of the current SAM model. Second, we proposed the distillation strategy to distill the knowledge to segment the free space of the walkway for robot navigation without the label. In the meantime, we design the trimming strategy that works collaboratively with distillation to enable lightweight inference to deploy the neural network on edge devices such as NVIDIA-TX2 or Xavier NX during autonomous navigation. Integrated into the robot navigation system, extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed framework has achieved superior performance in terms of both accuracy and efficiency in robot scene perception and autonomous robot navigation.
In unknown cluttered and dynamic environments such as disaster scenes, mobile robots need to perform target-driven navigation in order to find people or objects of interest, while being solely guided by images of the targets. In this paper, we introduce NavFormer, a novel end-to-end transformer architecture developed for robot target-driven navigation in unknown and dynamic environments. NavFormer leverages the strengths of both 1) transformers for sequential data processing and 2) self-supervised learning (SSL) for visual representation to reason about spatial layouts and to perform collision-avoidance in dynamic settings. The architecture uniquely combines dual-visual encoders consisting of a static encoder for extracting invariant environment features for spatial reasoning, and a general encoder for dynamic obstacle avoidance. The primary robot navigation task is decomposed into two sub-tasks for training: single robot exploration and multi-robot collision avoidance. We perform cross-task training to enable the transfer of learned skills to the complex primary navigation task without the need for task-specific fine-tuning. Simulated experiments demonstrate that NavFormer can effectively navigate a mobile robot in diverse unknown environments, outperforming existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of success rate and success weighted by (normalized inverse) path length. Furthermore, a comprehensive ablation study is performed to evaluate the impact of the main design choices of the structure and training of NavFormer, further validating their effectiveness in the overall system.
The provision of robotic assistance during motor training has proven to be effective in enhancing motor learning in some healthy trainee groups as well as patients. Personalizing such robotic assistance can help further improve motor (re)learning outcomes and cater better to the trainee's needs and desires. However, the development of personalized haptic assistance is hindered by the lack of understanding of the link between the trainee's personality and the effects of haptic guidance during human-robot interaction. To address this gap, we ran an experiment with 42 healthy participants who trained with a robotic device to control a virtual pendulum to hit incoming targets either with or without haptic guidance. We found that certain personal traits affected how users adapt and interact with the guidance during training. In particular, those participants with an 'Achiever gaming style' performed better and applied lower interaction forces to the robotic device than the average participant as the training progressed. Conversely, participants with the 'Free spirit game style' increased the interaction force in the course of training. We also found an interaction between some personal characteristics and haptic guidance. Specifically, participants with a higher 'Transformation of challenge' trait exhibited poorer performance during training while receiving haptic guidance compared to an average participant receiving haptic guidance. Furthermore, individuals with an external Locus of Control tended to increase their interaction force with the device, deviating from the pattern observed in an average participant under the same guidance. These findings suggest that individual characteristics may play a crucial role in the effectiveness of haptic guidance training strategies.
In recent years, legged and wheeled-legged robots have gained prominence for tasks in environments predominantly created for humans across various domains. One significant challenge faced by many of these robots is their limited capability to navigate stairs, which hampers their functionality in multi-story environments. This study proposes a method aimed at addressing this limitation, employing reinforcement learning to develop a versatile controller applicable to a wide range of robots. In contrast to the conventional velocity-based controllers, our approach builds upon a position-based formulation of the RL task, which we show to be vital for stair climbing. Furthermore, the methodology leverages an asymmetric actor-critic structure, enabling the utilization of privileged information from simulated environments during training while eliminating the reliance on exteroceptive sensors during real-world deployment. Another key feature of the proposed approach is the incorporation of a boolean observation within the controller, enabling the activation or deactivation of a stair-climbing mode. We present our results on different quadrupeds and bipedal robots in simulation and showcase how our method allows the balancing robot Ascento to climb 15cm stairs in the real world, a task that was previously impossible for this robot.
Autonomic computing investigates how systems can achieve (user) specified control outcomes on their own, without the intervention of a human operator. Autonomic computing fundamentals have been substantially influenced by those of control theory for closed and open-loop systems. In practice, complex systems may exhibit a number of concurrent and inter-dependent control loops. Despite research into autonomic models for managing computer resources, ranging from individual resources (e.g., web servers) to a resource ensemble (e.g., multiple resources within a data center), research into integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve resource autonomy and performance at scale continues to be a fundamental challenge. The integration of AI/ML to achieve such autonomic and self-management of systems can be achieved at different levels of granularity, from full to human-in-the-loop automation. In this article, leading academics, researchers, practitioners, engineers, and scientists in the fields of cloud computing, AI/ML, and quantum computing join to discuss current research and potential future directions for these fields. Further, we discuss challenges and opportunities for leveraging AI and ML in next generation computing for emerging computing paradigms, including cloud, fog, edge, serverless and quantum computing environments.
