Fractional Brownian trajectories (fBm) feature both randomness and strong scale-free correlations, challenging generative models to reproduce the intrinsic memory characterizing the underlying process. Here we test a diffusion probabilistic model on a specific dataset of corrupted images corresponding to incomplete Euclidean distance matrices of fBm at various memory exponents $H$. Our dataset implies uniqueness of the data imputation in the regime of low missing ratio, where the remaining partial graph is rigid, providing the ground truth for the inpainting. We find that the conditional diffusion generation stably reproduces the statistics of missing fBm-distributed distances for different values of $H$ exponent. Furthermore, while diffusion models have been recently shown to remember samples from the training database, we show that diffusion-based inpainting behaves qualitatively different from the database search with the increasing database size. Finally, we apply our fBm-trained diffusion model with $H=1/3$ for completion of chromosome distance matrices obtained in single-cell microscopy experiments, showing its superiority over the standard bioinformatics algorithms. This work presents an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method for the compressible two-phase flow ejecta transporting model with the HLLC-2D Riemann solver. We focus on researching the precise equation to describe the interactions between particle phase and flow phase. The calculation of the momentum and energy exchange across two phases is the key point during the procedure, which can be capable of maintaining the conservation of this system. For particles, tracking their trajectories within the mesh and elements is essential. Thereafter an ALE method instead of Lagrangian scheme is derived for the discretization of the equation to perform better with the complex motion of particles and flow. We apply the HLLC-2D Riemann solver to substitute the HLLC solver which relaxes the limitation for continuous fluxes along the edge. Meanwhile we propose a method for searching particles and provide a CFL-like condition based on this. Finally, we show some numerical tests to analysis the influence of particles on fluid and get a following effect between two phases. The model and the numerical method are validated through numerical tests to show its robustness and accuracy.

We present a novel method for training score-based generative models which uses nonlinear noising dynamics to improve learning of structured distributions. Generalizing to a nonlinear drift allows for additional structure to be incorporated into the dynamics, thus making the training better adapted to the data, e.g., in the case of multimodality or (approximate) symmetries. Such structure can be obtained from the data by an inexpensive preprocessing step. The nonlinear dynamics introduces new challenges into training which we address in two ways: 1) we develop a new nonlinear denoising score matching (NDSM) method, 2) we introduce neural control variates in order to reduce the variance of the NDSM training objective. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method on several examples: a) a collection of low-dimensional examples, motivated by clustering in latent space, b) high-dimensional images, addressing issues with mode collapse, small training sets, and approximate symmetries, the latter being a challenge for methods based on equivariant neural networks, which require exact symmetries.

Probabilistic graphical models are widely used to model complex systems under uncertainty. Traditionally, Gaussian directed graphical models are applied for analysis of large networks with continuous variables as they can provide conditional and marginal distributions in closed form simplifying the inferential task. The Gaussianity and linearity assumptions are often adequate, yet can lead to poor performance when dealing with some practical applications. In this paper, we model each variable in graph G as a polynomial regression of its parents to capture complex relationships between individual variables and with a utility function of polynomial form. We develop a message-passing algorithm to propagate information throughout the network solely using moments which enables the expected utility scores to be calculated exactly. Our propagation method scales up well and enables to perform inference in terms of a finite number of expectations. We illustrate how the proposed methodology works with examples and in an application to decision problems in energy planning and for real-time clinical decision support.

This research conducts a thorough reevaluation of seismic fragility curves by utilizing ordinal regression models, moving away from the commonly used log-normal distribution function known for its simplicity. It explores the nuanced differences and interrelations among various ordinal regression approaches, including Cumulative, Sequential, and Adjacent Category models, alongside their enhanced versions that incorporate category-specific effects and variance heterogeneity. The study applies these methodologies to empirical bridge damage data from the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, using both frequentist and Bayesian inference methods, and conducts model diagnostics using surrogate residuals. The analysis covers eleven models, from basic to those with heteroscedastic extensions and category-specific effects. Through rigorous leave-one-out cross-validation, the Sequential model with category-specific effects emerges as the most effective. The findings underscore a notable divergence in damage probability predictions between this model and conventional Cumulative probit models, advocating for a substantial transition towards more adaptable fragility curve modeling techniques that enhance the precision of seismic risk assessments. In conclusion, this research not only readdresses the challenge of fitting seismic fragility curves but also advances methodological standards and expands the scope of seismic fragility analysis. It advocates for ongoing innovation and critical reevaluation of conventional methods to advance the predictive accuracy and applicability of seismic fragility models within the performance-based earthquake engineering domain.

Learning to Optimize (L2O) stands at the intersection of traditional optimization and machine learning, utilizing the capabilities of machine learning to enhance conventional optimization techniques. As real-world optimization problems frequently share common structures, L2O provides a tool to exploit these structures for better or faster solutions. This tutorial dives deep into L2O techniques, introducing how to accelerate optimization algorithms, promptly estimate the solutions, or even reshape the optimization problem itself, making it more adaptive to real-world applications. By considering the prerequisites for successful applications of L2O and the structure of the optimization problems at hand, this tutorial provides a comprehensive guide for practitioners and researchers alike.

In this paper, we propose a weak Galerkin finite element method (WG) for solving singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems on a Bakhvalov-type mesh in 2D. Our method is flexible and allows the use of discontinuous approximation functions on the meshe. An error estimate is devised in a suitable norm and the optimal convergence order is obtained. Finally, numerical experiments are given to support the theory and to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

We present a scalable machine learning (ML) force-field model for the adiabatic dynamics of cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) systems. Large scale dynamical simulations of the JT model also shed light on the orbital ordering dynamics in colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The JT effect in these materials describes the distortion of local oxygen octahedra driven by a coupling to the orbital degrees of freedom of $e_g$ electrons. An effective electron-mediated interaction between the local JT modes leads to a structural transition and the emergence of long-range orbital order at low temperatures. Assuming the principle of locality, a deep-learning neural-network model is developed to accurately and efficiently predict the electron-induced forces that drive the dynamical evolution of JT phonons. A group-theoretical method is utilized to develop a descriptor that incorporates the combined orbital and lattice symmetry into the ML model. Large-scale Langevin dynamics simulations, enabled by the ML force-field models, are performed to investigate the coarsening dynamics of the composite JT distortion and orbital order after a thermal quench. The late-stage coarsening of orbital domains exhibits pronounced freezing behaviors which are likely related to the unusual morphology of the domain structures. Our work highlights a promising avenue for multi-scale dynamical modeling of correlated electron systems.

This work presents several new results concerning the analysis of the convergence of binary, univariate, and linear subdivision schemes, all related to the {\it contractivity factor} of a convergent scheme. First, we prove that a convergent scheme cannot have a contractivity factor lower than half. Since the lower this factor is, the faster is the convergence of the scheme, schemes with contractivity factor $\frac{1}{2}$, such as those generating spline functions, have optimal convergence rate. Additionally, we provide further insights and conditions for the convergence of linear schemes and demonstrate their applicability in an improved algorithm for determining the convergence of such subdivision schemes.

Similar to the notion of h-adaptivity, where the discretization resolution is adaptively changed, I propose the notion of model adaptivity, where the underlying model (the governing equations) is adaptively changed in space and time. Specifically, this work introduces a hybrid and adaptive coupling of a 3D bulk fluid flow model with a 2D thin film flow model. As a result, this work extends the applicability of existing thin film flow models to complex scenarios where, for example, bulk flow develops into thin films after striking a surface. At each location in space and time, the proposed framework automatically decides whether a 3D model or a 2D model must be applied. Using a meshless approach for both 3D and 2D models, at each particle, the decision to apply a 2D or 3D model is based on the user-prescribed resolution and a local principal component analysis. When a particle needs to be changed from a 3D model to 2D, or vice versa, the discretization is changed, and all relevant data mapping is done on-the-fly. Appropriate two-way coupling conditions and mass conservation considerations between the 3D and 2D models are also developed. Numerical results show that this model adaptive framework shows higher flexibility and compares well against finely resolved 3D simulations. In an actual application scenario, a 3 factor speed up is obtained, while maintaining the accuracy of the solution.

Mobile devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) devices nowadays generate a large amount of heterogeneous spatial-temporal data. It remains a challenging problem to model the spatial-temporal dynamics under privacy concern. Federated learning (FL) has been proposed as a framework to enable model training across distributed devices without sharing original data which reduce privacy concern. Personalized federated learning (PFL) methods further address data heterogenous problem. However, these methods don't consider natural spatial relations among nodes. For the sake of modeling spatial relations, Graph Neural Netowork (GNN) based FL approach have been proposed. But dynamic spatial-temporal relations among edge nodes are not taken into account. Several approaches model spatial-temporal dynamics in a centralized environment, while less effort has been made under federated setting. To overcome these challeges, we propose a novel Federated Adaptive Spatial-Temporal Attention (FedASTA) framework to model the dynamic spatial-temporal relations. On the client node, FedASTA extracts temporal relations and trend patterns from the decomposed terms of original time series. Then, on the server node, FedASTA utilize trend patterns from clients to construct adaptive temporal-spatial aware graph which captures dynamic correlation between clients. Besides, we design a masked spatial attention module with both static graph and constructed adaptive graph to model spatial dependencies among clients. Extensive experiments on five real-world public traffic flow datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-art performance in federated scenario. In addition, the experiments made in centralized setting show the effectiveness of our novel adaptive graph construction approach compared with other popular dynamic spatial-temporal aware methods.
