A robot needs multiple interaction modes to robustly collaborate with a human in complicated industrial tasks. We develop a Coexistence-and-Cooperation (CoCo) human-robot collaboration system. Coexistence mode enables the robot to work with the human on different sub-tasks independently in a shared space. Cooperation mode enables the robot to follow human guidance and recover failures. A human intention tracking algorithm takes in both human and robot motion measurements as input and provides a switch on the interaction modes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of CoCo system in a use case analogous to a real world multi-step assembly task.

In modern autonomy stacks, prediction modules are paramount to planning motions in the presence of other mobile agents. However, failures in prediction modules can mislead the downstream planner into making unsafe decisions. Indeed, the high uncertainty inherent to the task of trajectory forecasting ensures that such mispredictions occur frequently. Motivated by the need to improve safety of autonomous vehicles without compromising on their performance, we develop a probabilistic run-time monitor that detects when a "harmful" prediction failure occurs, i.e., a task-relevant failure detector. We achieve this by propagating trajectory prediction errors to the planning cost to reason about their impact on the AV. Furthermore, our detector comes equipped with performance measures on the false-positive and the false-negative rate and allows for data-free calibration. In our experiments we compared our detector with various others and found that our detector has the highest area under the receiver operator characteristic curve.

Human-in-the-loop approaches are of great importance for robot applications. In the presented study, we implemented a multimodal human-robot interaction (HRI) scenario, in which a simulated robot communicates with its human partner through speech and gestures. The robot announces its intention verbally and selects the appropriate action using pointing gestures. The human partner, in turn, evaluates whether the robot's verbal announcement (intention) matches the action (pointing gesture) chosen by the robot. For cases where the verbal announcement of the robot does not match the corresponding action choice of the robot, we expect error-related potentials (ErrPs) in the human electroencephalogram (EEG). These intrinsic evaluations of robot actions by humans, evident in the EEG, were recorded in real time, continuously segmented online and classified asynchronously. For feature selection, we propose an approach that allows the combinations of forward and backward sliding windows to train a classifier. We achieved an average classification performance of 91% across 9 subjects. As expected, we also observed a relatively high variability between the subjects. In the future, the proposed feature selection approach will be extended to allow for customization of feature selection. To this end, the best combinations of forward and backward sliding windows will be automatically selected to account for inter-subject variability in classification performance. In addition, we plan to use the intrinsic human error evaluation evident in the error case by the ErrP in interactive reinforcement learning to improve multimodal human-robot interaction.

As different people perceive others' emotional expressions differently, their annotation in terms of arousal and valence are per se subjective. To address this, these emotion annotations are typically collected by multiple annotators and averaged across annotators in order to obtain labels for arousal and valence. However, besides the average, also the uncertainty of a label is of interest, and should also be modeled and predicted for automatic emotion recognition. In the literature, for simplicity, label uncertainty modeling is commonly approached with a Gaussian assumption on the collected annotations. However, as the number of annotators is typically rather small due to resource constraints, we argue that the Gaussian approach is a rather crude assumption. In contrast, in this work we propose to model the label distribution using a Student's t-distribution which allows us to account for the number of annotations available. With this model, we derive the corresponding Kullback-Leibler divergence based loss function and use it to train an estimator for the distribution of emotion labels, from which the mean and uncertainty can be inferred. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, we show the benefits of the t-distribution over a Gaussian distribution. We validate our proposed method on the AVEC'16 dataset. Results reveal that our t-distribution based approach improves over the Gaussian approach with state-of-the-art uncertainty modeling results in speech-based emotion recognition, along with an optimal and even faster convergence.

We build a system that enables any human to control a robot hand and arm, simply by demonstrating motions with their own hand. The robot observes the human operator via a single RGB camera and imitates their actions in real-time. Human hands and robot hands differ in shape, size, and joint structure, and performing this translation from a single uncalibrated camera is a highly underconstrained problem. Moreover, the retargeted trajectories must effectively execute tasks on a physical robot, which requires them to be temporally smooth and free of self-collisions. Our key insight is that while paired human-robot correspondence data is expensive to collect, the internet contains a massive corpus of rich and diverse human hand videos. We leverage this data to train a system that understands human hands and retargets a human video stream into a robot hand-arm trajectory that is smooth, swift, safe, and semantically similar to the guiding demonstration. We demonstrate that it enables previously untrained people to teleoperate a robot on various dexterous manipulation tasks. Our low-cost, glove-free, marker-free remote teleoperation system makes robot teaching more accessible and we hope that it can aid robots in learning to act autonomously in the real world. The selection of maskers and playback gain levels in a soundscape augmentation system is crucial to its effectiveness in improving the overall acoustic comfort of a given environment. Traditionally, the selection of appropriate maskers and gain levels has been informed by expert opinion, which may not representative of the target population, or by listening tests, which can be time-consuming and labour-intensive. Furthermore, the resulting static choices of masker and gain are often inflexible to the dynamic nature of real-world soundscapes. In this work, we utilized a deep learning model to perform joint selection of the optimal masker and its gain level for a given soundscape. The proposed model was designed with highly modular building blocks, allowing for an optimized inference process that can quickly search through a large number of masker and gain combinations. In addition, we introduced the use of feature-domain soundscape augmentation conditioned on the digital gain level, eliminating the computationally expensive waveform-domain mixing process during inference time, as well as the tedious pre-calibration process required for new maskers. The proposed system was validated on a large-scale dataset of subjective responses to augmented soundscapes with more than 440 participants, ensuring the ability of the model to predict combined effect of the masker and its gain level on the perceptual pleasantness level.

Vision-language navigation (VLN), in which an agent follows language instruction in a visual environment, has been studied under the premise that the input command is fully feasible in the environment. Yet in practice, a request may not be possible due to language ambiguity or environment changes. To study VLN with unknown command feasibility, we introduce a new dataset Mobile app Tasks with Iterative Feedback (MoTIF), where the goal is to complete a natural language command in a mobile app. Mobile apps provide a scalable domain to study real downstream uses of VLN methods. Moreover, mobile app commands provide instruction for interactive navigation, as they result in action sequences with state changes via clicking, typing, or swiping. MoTIF is the first to include feasibility annotations, containing both binary feasibility labels and fine-grained labels for why tasks are unsatisfiable. We further collect follow-up questions for ambiguous queries to enable research on task uncertainty resolution. Equipped with our dataset, we propose the new problem of feasibility prediction, in which a natural language instruction and multimodal app environment are used to predict command feasibility. MoTIF provides a more realistic app dataset as it contains many diverse environments, high-level goals, and longer action sequences than prior work. We evaluate interactive VLN methods using MoTIF, quantify the generalization ability of current approaches to new app environments, and measure the effect of task feasibility on navigation performance.

We propose an algorithm to (i) learn online a deep signed distance function (SDF) with a LiDAR-equipped robot to represent the 3D environment geometry, and (ii) plan collision-free trajectories given this deep learned map. Our algorithm takes a stream of incoming LiDAR scans and continually optimizes a neural network to represent the SDF of the environment around its current vicinity. When the SDF network quality saturates, we cache a copy of the network, along with a learned confidence metric, and initialize a new SDF network to continue mapping new regions of the environment. We then concatenate all the cached local SDFs through a confidence-weighted scheme to give a global SDF for planning. For planning, we make use of a sequential convex model predictive control (MPC) algorithm. The MPC planner optimizes a dynamically feasible trajectory for the robot while enforcing no collisions with obstacles mapped in the global SDF. We show that our online mapping algorithm produces higher-quality maps than existing methods for online SDF training. In the WeBots simulator, we further showcase the combined mapper and planner running online -- navigating autonomously and without collisions in an unknown environment.

In this work, we introduce an adaptive control framework for human-robot collaborative transportation of objects with unknown deformation behaviour. The proposed framework takes as input the haptic information transmitted through the object, and the kinematic information of the human body obtained from a motion capture system to create reactive whole-body motions on a mobile collaborative robot. In order to validate our framework experimentally, we compared its performance with an admittance controller during a co-transportation task of a partially deformable object. We additionally demonstrate the potential of the framework while co-transporting rigid (aluminum rod) and highly deformable (rope) objects. A mobile manipulator which consists of an Omni-directional mobile base, a collaborative robotic arm, and a robotic hand is used as the robotic partner in the experiments. Quantitative and qualitative results of a 12-subjects experiment show that the proposed framework can effectively deal with objects of unknown deformability and provides intuitive assistance to human partners.

This paper focuses on waveform design for joint radar and communication systems and presents a new subset selection process to improve the communication error rate performance and global accuracy of radar sensing of the random stepped frequency permutation waveform. An optimal communication receiver based on integer programming is proposed to handle any subset of permutations followed by a more efficient sub-optimal receiver based on the Hungarian algorithm. Considering optimum maximum likelihood detection, the block error rate is analyzed under both additive white Gaussian noise and correlated Rician fading. We propose two methods to select a permutation subset with an improved block error rate and an efficient encoding scheme to map the information symbols to selected permutations under these subsets. From the radar perspective, the ambiguity function is analyzed with regards to the local and the global accuracy of target detection. Furthermore, a subset selection method to reduce the maximum sidelobe height is proposed by extending the properties of Costas arrays. Finally, the process of remapping the frequency tones to the symbol set used to generate permutations is introduced as a method to improve both the communication and radar performances of the selected permutation subset.

Effective multi-robot teams require the ability to move to goals in complex environments in order to address real-world applications such as search and rescue. Multi-robot teams should be able to operate in a completely decentralized manner, with individual robot team members being capable of acting without explicit communication between neighbors. In this paper, we propose a novel game theoretic model that enables decentralized and communication-free navigation to a goal position. Robots each play their own distributed game by estimating the behavior of their local teammates in order to identify behaviors that move them in the direction of the goal, while also avoiding obstacles and maintaining team cohesion without collisions. We prove theoretically that generated actions approach a Nash equilibrium, which also corresponds to an optimal strategy identified for each robot. We show through extensive simulations that our approach enables decentralized and communication-free navigation by a multi-robot system to a goal position, and is able to avoid obstacles and collisions, maintain connectivity, and respond robustly to sensor noise.
