This paper introduces a new method of discretization that collocates both endpoints of the domain and enables the complete convergence of the costate variables associated with the Hamilton boundary-value problem. This is achieved through the inclusion of an \emph{exceptional sample} to the roots of the Legendre-Lobatto polynomial, thus promoting the associated differentiation matrix to be full-rank. We study the location of the new sample such that the differentiation matrix is the most robust to perturbations and we prove that this location is also the choice that mitigates the Runge phenomenon associated with polynomial interpolation. Two benchmark problems are successfully implemented in support of our theoretical findings. The new method is observed to converge exponentially with the number of discretization points used.
We introduce RotateIt, a system that enables fingertip-based object rotation along multiple axes by leveraging multimodal sensory inputs. Our system is trained in simulation, where it has access to ground-truth object shapes and physical properties. Then we distill it to operate on realistic yet noisy simulated visuotactile and proprioceptive sensory inputs. These multimodal inputs are fused via a visuotactile transformer, enabling online inference of object shapes and physical properties during deployment. We show significant performance improvements over prior methods and the importance of visual and tactile sensing.
This paper develops and analyzes an accelerated proximal descent method for finding stationary points of nonconvex composite optimization problems. The objective function is of the form $f+h$ where $h$ is a proper closed convex function, $f$ is a differentiable function on the domain of $h$, and $\nabla f$ is Lipschitz continuous on the domain of $h$. The main advantage of this method is that it is "parameter-free" in the sense that it does not require knowledge of the Lipschitz constant of $\nabla f$ or of any global topological properties of $f$. It is shown that the proposed method can obtain an $\varepsilon$-approximate stationary point with iteration complexity bounds that are optimal, up to logarithmic terms over $\varepsilon$, in both the convex and nonconvex settings. Some discussion is also given about how the proposed method can be leveraged in other existing optimization frameworks, such as min-max smoothing and penalty frameworks for constrained programming, to create more specialized parameter-free methods. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to support the practical viability of the method.
This paper provides an insight into the possibility of how to find ontologies most relevant to scientific texts using artificial neural networks. The basic idea of the presented approach is to select a representative paragraph from a source text file, embed it to a vector space by a pre-trained fine-tuned transformer, and classify the embedded vector according to its relevance to a target ontology. We have considered different classifiers to categorize the output from the transformer, in particular random forest, support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, k-nearest neighbors, and Gaussian process classifiers. Their suitability has been evaluated in a use case with ontologies and scientific texts concerning catalysis research. From results we can say the worst results have random forest. The best results in this task brought support vector machine classifier.
This paper presents a knowledge graph construction method for legal case documents and related laws, aiming to organize legal information efficiently and enhance various downstream tasks. Our approach consists of three main steps: data crawling, information extraction, and knowledge graph deployment. First, the data crawler collects a large corpus of legal case documents and related laws from various sources, providing a rich database for further processing. Next, the information extraction step employs natural language processing techniques to extract entities such as courts, cases, domains, and laws, as well as their relationships from the unstructured text. Finally, the knowledge graph is deployed, connecting these entities based on their extracted relationships, creating a heterogeneous graph that effectively represents legal information and caters to users such as lawyers, judges, and scholars. The established baseline model leverages unsupervised learning methods, and by incorporating the knowledge graph, it demonstrates the ability to identify relevant laws for a given legal case. This approach opens up opportunities for various applications in the legal domain, such as legal case analysis, legal recommendation, and decision support.
The communities of blockchains and distributed ledgers have been stirred up by the introduction of zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). Originally designed to solve privacy issues, ZKPs have now evolved into an effective remedy for scalability concerns and are applied in Zcash (internet money like Bitcoin). To enable ZKPs, Rank-1 Constraint Systems (R1CS) offer a verifier for bi-linear equations. To accurately and efficiently represent R1CS, several language tools like Circom, Noir, and Snarky have been proposed to automate the compilation of advanced programs into R1CS. However, due to the flexible nature of R1CS representation, there can be significant differences in the compiled R1CS forms generated from circuit language programs with the same underlying semantics. To address this issue, this paper uses a data-flow-based R1CS paradigm algorithm, which produces a standardized format for different R1CS instances with identical semantics. By using the normalized R1CS format circuits, the complexity of circuits' verification can be reduced. In addition, this paper presents an R1CS normalization algorithm benchmark, and our experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness and correctness of our methods.
While standard speaker diarization attempts to answer the question "who spoken when", most of relevant applications in reality are more interested in determining "who spoken what". Whether it is the conventional modularized approach or the more recent end-to-end neural diarization (EEND), an additional automatic speech recognition (ASR) model and an orchestration algorithm are required to associate the speaker labels with recognized words. In this paper, we propose Word-level End-to-End Neural Diarization (WEEND) with auxiliary network, a multi-task learning algorithm that performs end-to-end ASR and speaker diarization in the same neural architecture. That is, while speech is being recognized, speaker labels are predicted simultaneously for each recognized word. Experimental results demonstrate that WEEND outperforms the turn-based diarization baseline system on all 2-speaker short-form scenarios and has the capability to generalize to audio lengths of 5 minutes. Although 3+speaker conversations are harder, we find that with enough in-domain training data, WEEND has the potential to deliver high quality diarized text.
We propose a new fractional Laplacian for bounded domains, expressed as a conservation law and thus particularly suited to finite-volume schemes. Our approach permits the direct prescription of no-flux boundary conditions. We first show the well-posedness theory for the fractional heat equation. We also develop a numerical scheme, which correctly captures the action of the fractional Laplacian and its anomalous diffusion effect. We benchmark numerical solutions for the L\'evy-Fokker-Planck equation against known analytical solutions. We conclude by numerically exploring properties of these equations with respect to their stationary states and long-time asymptotics.
This paper delves into the intersection of computational theory and music, examining the concept of undecidability and its significant, yet overlooked, implications within the realm of modern music composition and production. It posits that undecidability, a principle traditionally associated with theoretical computer science, extends its relevance to the music industry. The study adopts a multidimensional approach, focusing on five key areas: (1) the Turing completeness of Ableton, a widely used digital audio workstation, (2) the undecidability of satisfiability in sound creation utilizing an array of effects, (3) the undecidability of constraints on polymeters in musical compositions, (4) the undecidability of satisfiability in just intonation harmony constraints, and (5) the undecidability of "new ordering systems". In addition to providing theoretical proof for these assertions, the paper elucidates the practical relevance of these concepts for practitioners outside the field of theoretical computer science. The ultimate aim is to foster a new understanding of undecidability in music, highlighting its broader applicability and potential to influence contemporary computer-assisted (and traditional) music making.
The accurate and interpretable prediction of future events in time-series data often requires the capturing of representative patterns (or referred to as states) underpinning the observed data. To this end, most existing studies focus on the representation and recognition of states, but ignore the changing transitional relations among them. In this paper, we present evolutionary state graph, a dynamic graph structure designed to systematically represent the evolving relations (edges) among states (nodes) along time. We conduct analysis on the dynamic graphs constructed from the time-series data and show that changes on the graph structures (e.g., edges connecting certain state nodes) can inform the occurrences of events (i.e., time-series fluctuation). Inspired by this, we propose a novel graph neural network model, Evolutionary State Graph Network (EvoNet), to encode the evolutionary state graph for accurate and interpretable time-series event prediction. Specifically, Evolutionary State Graph Network models both the node-level (state-to-state) and graph-level (segment-to-segment) propagation, and captures the node-graph (state-to-segment) interactions over time. Experimental results based on five real-world datasets show that our approach not only achieves clear improvements compared with 11 baselines, but also provides more insights towards explaining the results of event predictions.
In this paper, we propose the joint learning attention and recurrent neural network (RNN) models for multi-label classification. While approaches based on the use of either model exist (e.g., for the task of image captioning), training such existing network architectures typically require pre-defined label sequences. For multi-label classification, it would be desirable to have a robust inference process, so that the prediction error would not propagate and thus affect the performance. Our proposed model uniquely integrates attention and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) models, which not only addresses the above problem but also allows one to identify visual objects of interests with varying sizes without the prior knowledge of particular label ordering. More importantly, label co-occurrence information can be jointly exploited by our LSTM model. Finally, by advancing the technique of beam search, prediction of multiple labels can be efficiently achieved by our proposed network model.
