Channel estimation in mmWave and THz-range wireless communications (producing Gb/Tb-range of data) is critical to configuring system parameters related to transmission signal quality, and yet it remains a daunting challenge both in software and hardware. Current methods of channel estimations, be it modeling- or data-based (machine learning (ML)), - use and create big data. This in turn requires a large amount of computational resources, read operations to prove if there is some predefined channel configurations, e.g., QoS requirements, in the database, as well as write operations to store the new combinations of QoS parameters in the database. Especially the ML-based approach requires high computational and storage resources, low latency and a higher hardware flexibility. In this paper, we engineer and study the offloading of the above operations to edge and cloud computing systems to understand the suitability of edge and cloud computing to provide rapid response with channel and link configuration parameters on the example of THz channel modeling. We evaluate the performance of the engineered system when the computational and storage resources are orchestrated based on: 1) monolithic architecture, 2) microservices architectures, both in edge-cloud based approach. For microservices approach, we engineer both Docker Swarm and Kubernetes systems. The measurements show a great promise of edge computing and microservices that can quickly respond to properly configure parameters and improve transmission distance and signal quality with ultra-high speed wireless communications.

Future generations of wireless networks will offer newfangled performance via unprecedented solutions: the metasurface innovation will drive such a revolution by posing control onto the surrounding propagation environment, always portrayed as a tamper-proof black-box. The RIS technology, envisioned as the discrete version of a metasurface, can be dynamically configured to alter the propagation properties of the impinging signals by, e.g., steering the corresponding beams towards defined directions. This will unlock new application opportunities and deliver advanced end-user services. However, this fascinating solution comes at not negligible costs: RIS require ad-hoc design, deployment and management operations to be fully exploited. In this paper, we tackle the RIS placement problem from a theoretical viewpoint, showcasing a large-scale solution on synthetic topologies to improve communication performance while solving the "dead-zone" problem. Additionally, our mathematical framework is empirically validated within a realistic indoor scenario, the Rennes railway station, showing how a complex indoor propagation environment can be fully disciplined by an advanced RIS installation.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been regarded as one of the most promising technologies for future wireless communications. However, the mutual interference in the communication radar coexistence system cannot be ignored. Inspired by the studies of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose a double-RIS-assisted coexistence system where two RISs are deployed for enhancing communication signals and suppressing mutual interference. We aim to jointly optimize the beamforming of RISs and radar to maximize communication performance while maintaining radar detection performance. The investigated problem is challenging, and thus we transform it into an equivalent but more tractable form by introducing auxiliary variables. Then, we propose a penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm to solve the resultant problem. Moreover, we consider two special cases: the large radar transmit power scenario and the low radar transmit power scenario. For the former, we prove that the beamforming design is only determined by the communication channel and the corresponding optimal joint beamforming strategy can be obtained in closed-form. For the latter, we minimize the mutual interference via the block coordinate descent (BCD) method. By combining the solutions of these two cases, a low-complexity algorithm is also developed. Finally, simulation results show that both the PDD-based and low-complexity algorithms outperform benchmark algorithms.

The spectrum scarcity is one of the main challenges of future wireless technologies. When looking at vehicle-to-everything (V2X), this magnifies as spectrum sharing might impact on safety and traffic efficiency. It is therefore of increasing interest to focus on the coexistence of the main access layer V2X technologies in the same geographical region and in the same channels, with particular reference to today's main candidates IEEE 802.11p and sidelink LTE-V2X Mode 4. In this work, in addition to investigating the impact of the reciprocal interference, which is shown to heavily impact especially on the former and in congested channel conditions, a mitigation solution is extensively studied, which is based on the insertion of the IEEE 802.11p preamble at the beginning of the sidelink LTE-V2X transmission. The proposal, which is being discussed also within standardization bodies, requires no modifications to the IEEE 802.11p protocol stack and minor modifications to sidelink LTE-V2X. It is also directly applied to upcoming IEEE 802.11bd and extendable to sidelink 5G-V2X. The paper shows, through analysis and simulations in free-flow and dense scenarios, that the proposal allows a significant improvement of co-channel coexistence in lowly loaded channel conditions and that the improvement is granted also in congested cases when combined with additional countermeasures. Regarding the latter aspect, in particular, different approaches are compared, showing that acting on the congestion control mechanisms is a simple but effective solution.

Internet-of-vehicle (IoV) is a general concept referring to, e.g., autonomous drive based vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications or moving relays. Here, high rate and reliability demands call for advanced multi-antenna techniques and millimeter-wave (mmw) based communications. However, the sensitivity of the mmw signals to blockage may limit the system performance, especially in highways/rural areas with limited building reflectors/base station deployments and high-speed devices. To avoid the blockage, various techniques have been proposed among which reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a candidate. RIS, however, has been mainly of interest in stationary/low mobility scenarios, due to the associated channel state information acquisition and beam management overhead as well as imperfect reflection. In this article, we study the potentials and challenges of RIS-assisted dynamic blockage avoidance in IoV networks. Particularly, by designing region-based RIS pre-selection as well as blockage prediction schemes, we show that RIS-assisted communication has the potential to boost the performance of IoV networks. However, there are still issues to be solved before RIS can be practically deployed in IoV networks.

Data exchange among value chain partners provides them with a competitive advantage, but the risk of exposing sensitive data is ever-increasing. Information must be protected in storage and transmission to reduce this risk, so only the data producer and the final consumer can access or modify it. End-to-end (E2E) security mechanisms address this challenge, protecting companies from data breaches resulting from value chain attacks. Moreover, value chain particularities must also be considered. Multiple entities are involved in dynamic environments like these, both in data generation and consumption. Hence, a flexible generation of access policies is required to ensure that they can be updated whenever needed. This paper presents a CP-ABE-reliant data exchange system for value chains with E2E security. It considers the most relevant security and industrial requirements for value chains. The proposed solution can protect data according to access policies and update those policies without breaking E2E security or overloading field devices. In most cases, field devices are IIoT devices, limited in terms of processing and memory capabilities. The experimental evaluation has shown the proposed solution's feasibility for IIoT platforms.

IEEE 802.11p standard defines wireless technology protocols that enable vehicular transportation and manage traffic efficiency. A major challenge in the development of this technology is ensuring communication reliability in highly dynamic vehicular environments, where the wireless communication channels are doubly selective, thus making channel estimation and tracking a relevant problem to investigate. In this paper, a novel deep learning (DL)-based weighted interpolation estimator is proposed to accurately estimate vehicular channels especially in high mobility scenarios. The proposed estimator is based on modifying the pilot allocation of the IEEE 802.11p standard so that more transmission data rates are achieved. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that the developed estimator significantly outperforms the recently proposed DL-based frame-by-frame estimators in different vehicular scenarios, while substantially reducing the overall computational complexity.

We propose a joint channel estimation and signal detection approach for the uplink non-orthogonal multiple access using unsupervised machine learning. We apply the Gaussian mixture model to cluster the received signals, and accordingly optimize the decision regions to enhance the symbol error rate (SER). We show that, when the received powers of the users are sufficiently different, the proposed clustering-based approach achieves an SER performance on a par with that of the conventional maximum-likelihood detector with full channel state information. However, unlike the proposed approach, the maximum-likelihood detector requires the transmission of a large number of pilot symbols to accurately estimate the channel. The accuracy of the utilized clustering algorithm depends on the number of the data points available at the receiver. Therefore, there exists a tradeoff between accuracy and block length. We provide a comprehensive performance analysis of the proposed approach as well as deriving a theoretical bound on its SER performance as a function of the block length. Our simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and verify that the calculated theoretical bound can predict the SER performance of the proposed approach well.

One of the most critical aspects of enabling next-generation wireless technologies is developing an accurate and consistent channel model to be validated effectively with the help of real-world measurements. From this point of view, remarkable research has recently been conducted to model propagation channels involving the modification of the wireless propagation environment through the inclusion of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). This study mainly aims to present a vision on channel modeling strategies for the RIS-empowered communications systems considering the state-of-the-art channel and propagation modeling efforts in the literature. Moreover, it is also desired to draw attention to open-source and standard-compliant physical channel modeling efforts to provide comprehensive insights regarding the practical use-cases of RISs in future wireless networks.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has opened up numerous game-changing opportunities for realizing future wireless systems. In this paper, we propose an ISAC processing framework relying on millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Specifically, we provide a compressed sampling (CS) perspective to facilitate ISAC processing, which can not only recover the large-scale channel state information or/and radar imaging information, but also significantly reduce pilot overhead. First, an energy-efficient widely spaced array (WSA) architecture is tailored for the radar receiver, which enhances the angular resolution of radar sensing at the cost of angular ambiguity. Then, we propose an ISAC frame structure for time-variant ISAC systems considering different timescales. The pilot waveforms are judiciously designed by taking into account both CS theories and hardware constraints. Next, we design the dedicated dictionary for WSA that serves as a building block for formulating the ISAC processing as sparse signal recovery problems. The orthogonal matching pursuit with support refinement (OMP-SR) algorithm is proposed to effectively solve the problems in the existence of the angular ambiguity. We also provide a framework for estimating and compensating the Doppler frequencies during payload data transmission to guarantee communication performances. Simulation results demonstrate the good performances of both communications and radar sensing under the proposed ISAC framework.

In real-world applications, data often come in a growing manner, where the data volume and the number of classes may increase dynamically. This will bring a critical challenge for learning: given the increasing data volume or the number of classes, one has to instantaneously adjust the neural model capacity to obtain promising performance. Existing methods either ignore the growing nature of data or seek to independently search an optimal architecture for a given dataset, and thus are incapable of promptly adjusting the architectures for the changed data. To address this, we present a neural architecture adaptation method, namely Adaptation eXpert (AdaXpert), to efficiently adjust previous architectures on the growing data. Specifically, we introduce an architecture adjuster to generate a suitable architecture for each data snapshot, based on the previous architecture and the different extent between current and previous data distributions. Furthermore, we propose an adaptation condition to determine the necessity of adjustment, thereby avoiding unnecessary and time-consuming adjustments. Extensive experiments on two growth scenarios (increasing data volume and number of classes) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
