This paper investigates spectrum sharing communications in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled internet of things (IoT) networks, where secondary/cognitive IoT devices simultaneously upload their data to the UAV following a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) protocol in the pre-allocated spectrum to the primary network. We aim to maximize the minimum lifetime of IoT devices by jointly optimizing the UAV location, decoding order, and transmit power subject to probabilistic interference-power constraints at the primary base station (BS) while considering the imperfect channel state information (CSI). To solve the formulated non-convex mixed-integer programming problem, we first jointly optimize the UAV location and transmit power for given decoding order and obtain the globally optimal solution with the assistance of Lagrange duality. Then, by exhaustively searching all possible decoding orders, we obtain the global optimum to the formulated problem, which is applicable to relatively small-scale scenarios. For large-scale scenarios, we propose a low-complexity sub-optimal algorithm by transforming the original problem into a more tractable equivalent form and applying the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique and penalty function method. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design significantly outperforms the benchmark schemes.
This work investigates the effect of double intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in improving the spectrum efficient of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. Specifically, we aim to solve a weighted sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the digital precoding at the transmitter and the analog phase shifters at the IRS, subject to the minimum achievable rate constraint. To facilitate the design of an efficient solution, we first reformulate the original problem into a tractable one by exploiting the majorization-minimization (MM) method. Then, a block coordinate descent (BCD) method is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution, where the precoding matrices and the phase shifters are alternately optimized. Specifically, the digital precoding matrix design problem is solved by the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP), while the analog phase shift optimization is solved by the Riemannian manifold optimization (RMO). The convergence and computational complexity are analyzed. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed design, as well as the effectiveness of double-IRS in improving the spectral efficiency.
In this paper, we consider a smart factory scenario where a set of actuators receive critical control signals from an access point (AP) with reliability and low latency requirements. We investigate jointly active beamforming at the AP and passive phase shifting at the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for successfully delivering the control signals from the AP to the actuators within a required time duration. The transmission follows a two-stage design. In the first stage, each actuator can both receive the direct signal from AP and the reflected signal from the RIS. In the second stage, the actuators with successful reception in the first stage, relay the message through the D2D network to the actuators with failed receptions. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem where we first obtain an equivalent but more tractable form by addressing the problem with discrete indicator functions. Then, Frobenius inner product based equality is applied for decoupling the optimization variables. Further, we adopt a penalty-based approach to resolve the rank-one constraints. Finally, we deal with the $\ell_0$-norm by $\ell_1$-norm approximation and add an extra term $\ell_1-\ell_2$ for sparsity. Numerical results reveal that the proposed two-stage RIS-aided D2D communication protocol is effective for enabling reliable communication with latency requirements.
The paper studies the multi-user precoding problem as a non-convex optimization problem for wireless multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) systems. In our work, we approximate the target Spectral Efficiency function with a novel computationally simpler function. Then, we reduce the precoding problem to an unconstrained optimization task using a special differential projection method and solve it by the Quasi-Newton L-BFGS iterative procedure to achieve gains in capacity. We are testing the proposed approach in several scenarios generated using Quadriga -- open-source software for generating realistic radio channel impulse response. Our method shows monotonic improvement over heuristic methods with reasonable computation time. The proposed L-BFGS optimization scheme is novel in this area and shows a significant advantage over the standard approaches. Proposed method has a simple implementation and can be a good reference for other heuristic algorithms in this field.
Quantum communication can enhance internet technology by enabling novel applications that are provably impossible classically. The successful execution of such applications relies on the generation of quantum entanglement between different users of the network which meets stringent performance requirements. Alongside traditional metrics such as throughput and jitter, one must ensure the generated entanglement is of sufficiently high quality. Meeting such performance requirements demands a careful orchestration of many devices in the network, giving rise to a fundamentally new scheduling problem. Furthermore, technological limitations of near-term quantum devices impose significant constraints on scheduling methods hoping to meet performance requirements. In this work, we propose the first end-to-end design of a centralized quantum network with multiple users that orchestrates the delivery of entanglement which meets quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of applications. We achieve this by using a centrally constructed schedule that manages usage of devices and ensures the coordinated execution of different quantum operations throughout the network. We use periodic task scheduling and resource-constrained project scheduling techniques, including a novel heuristic, to construct the schedules. Our simulations of four small networks using hardware-validated network parameters, and of a real-world fiber topology using futuristic parameters, illustrate trade-offs between traditional and quantum performance metrics.
Satellite networks are promising to provide ubiquitous and high-capacity global wireless connectivity. Traditionally, satellite networks are modeled by placing satellites on a grid of multiple circular orbit geometries. Such a network model, however, requires intricate system-level simulations to evaluate coverage performance, and analytical understanding of the satellite network is limited. Continuing the success of stochastic geometry in a tractable analysis for terrestrial networks, in this paper, we develop novel models that are tractable for the coverage analysis of satellite networks using stochastic geometry. By modeling the locations of satellites and users using Poisson point processes on the surfaces of concentric spheres, we characterize analytical expressions for the coverage probability of a typical downlink user as a function of relevant parameters, including path-loss exponent, satellite height, density, and Nakagami fading parameter. Then, we also derive a tight lower bound of the coverage probability in closed-form expression while keeping full generality. Leveraging the derived expression, we identify the optimal density of satellites in terms of the height and the path-loss exponent. Our key finding is that the optimal average number of satellites decreases logarithmically with the network height to maximize the coverage performance. Simulation results verify the exactness of the derived expressions.
We propose a topology optimisation of acoustic devices that work in a certain bandwidth. To achieve this, we define the objective function as the frequency-averaged sound intensity at given observation points, which is represented by a frequency integral over a given frequency band. It is, however, prohibitively expensive to evaluate such an integral naively by a quadrature. We thus estimate the frequency response by the Pad\'{e} approximation and integrate the approximated function to obtain the objective function. The corresponding topological derivative is derived with the help of the adjoint variable method and chain rule. It is shown that the objective and its sensitivity can be evaluated semi-analytically. We present efficient numerical procedures to compute them and incorporate them into a topology optimisation based on the level-set method. We confirm the validity and effectiveness of the present method through some numerical examples.
Nonogram is a logic puzzle consisting of a rectangular grid with an objective to color every cell black or white such that the lengths of blocks of consecutive black cells in each row and column are equal to the given numbers. In 2010, Chien and Hon developed the first physical zero-knowledge proof for Nonogram, which allows a prover to physically show that he/she knows a solution of the puzzle without revealing it. However, their protocol requires special tools such as scratch-off cards and a machine to seal the cards, which are difficult to find in everyday life. Their protocol also has a nonzero soundness error. In this paper, we propose a more practical physical zero-knowledge proof for Nonogram that uses only a deck of regular paper cards and also has perfect soundness.
Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are emerging as promising enablers for the next generation of wireless communication systems, because of their ability to customize favorable radio propagation environments. However, with the conventional passive architecture, IRSs can only adjust the phase of the incident signals limiting the achievable beamforming gain. To fully unleash the potential of IRSs, in this paper, we consider a more general IRS architecture, i.e., active IRSs, which can adapt the phase and amplify the magnitude of the reflected incident signal simultaneously with the support of an additional power source. To realize green communication in active IRS-assisted multiuser systems, we jointly optimize the reflection matrix at the IRS and the beamforming vector at the base station (BS) for the minimization of the BS transmit power. The resource allocation algorithm design is formulated as an optimization problem taking into account the maximum power budget of the active IRS and the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of the users. To handle the non-convex design problem, we develop a novel and computationally efficient algorithm based on the bilinear transformation and inner approximation methods. The proposed algorithm is guaranteed to converge to a locally optimal solution of the considered problem. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared to the two baseline schemes. Moreover, the results unveil that deploying active IRSs is a promising approach to enhance the system performance compared to conventional passive IRSs, especially when strong direct links exist.
In this paper, an interference-aware path planning scheme for a network of cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is proposed. In particular, each UAV aims at achieving a tradeoff between maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing both wireless latency and the interference level caused on the ground network along its path. The problem is cast as a dynamic game among UAVs. To solve this game, a deep reinforcement learning algorithm, based on echo state network (ESN) cells, is proposed. The introduced deep ESN architecture is trained to allow each UAV to map each observation of the network state to an action, with the goal of minimizing a sequence of time-dependent utility functions. Each UAV uses ESN to learn its optimal path, transmission power level, and cell association vector at different locations along its path. The proposed algorithm is shown to reach a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE) upon convergence. Moreover, an upper and lower bound for the altitude of the UAVs is derived thus reducing the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves better wireless latency per UAV and rate per ground user (UE) while requiring a number of steps that is comparable to a heuristic baseline that considers moving via the shortest distance towards the corresponding destinations. The results also show that the optimal altitude of the UAVs varies based on the ground network density and the UE data rate requirements and plays a vital role in minimizing the interference level on the ground UEs as well as the wireless transmission delay of the UAV.
This paper considers the integrated problem of quay crane assignment, quay crane scheduling, yard location assignment, and vehicle dispatching operations at a container terminal. The main objective is to minimize vessel turnover times and maximize the terminal throughput, which are key economic drivers in terminal operations. Due to their computational complexities, these problems are not optimized jointly in existing work. This paper revisits this limitation and proposes Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) and Constraint Programming (CP) models for the integrated problem, under some realistic assumptions. Experimental results show that the MIP formulation can only solve small instances, while the CP model finds optimal solutions in reasonable times for realistic instances derived from actual container terminal operations.
