Peer production platforms like Wikipedia commonly suffer from content gaps. Prior research suggests recommender systems can help solve this problem, by guiding editors towards underrepresented topics. However, it remains unclear whether this approach would result in less relevant recommendations, leading to reduced overall engagement with recommended items. To answer this question, we first conducted offline analyses (Study 1) on SuggestBot, a task-routing recommender system for Wikipedia, then did a three-month controlled experiment (Study 2). Our results show that presenting users with articles from underrepresented topics increased the proportion of work done on those articles without significantly reducing overall recommendation uptake. We discuss the implications of our results, including how ignoring the article discovery process can artificially narrow recommendations. We draw parallels between this phenomenon and the common issue of "filter bubbles" to show how any platform that employs recommender systems is susceptible to it.

The provision of social care applications is crucial for elderly people to improve their quality of life and enables operators to provide early interventions. Accurate predictions of user dropouts in healthy ageing applications are essential since they are directly related to individual health statuses. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have enabled highly accurate predictions, outperforming traditional statistical methods that struggle to cope with individual patterns. However, ML requires a substantial amount of data for training, which is challenging due to the presence of personal identifiable information (PII) and the fragmentation posed by regulations. In this paper, we present a federated machine learning (FML) approach that minimizes privacy concerns and enables distributed training, without transferring individual data. We employ collaborative training by considering individuals and organizations under FML, which models both cross-device and cross-silo learning scenarios. Our approach is evaluated on a real-world dataset with non-independent and identically distributed (non-iid) data among clients, class imbalance and label ambiguity. Our results show that data selection and class imbalance handling techniques significantly improve the predictive accuracy of models trained under FML, demonstrating comparable or superior predictive performance than traditional ML models.

In this work, we provide evidence of a closely related linear representation of the board. In particular, we show that probing for "my colour" vs. "opponent's colour" may be a simple yet powerful way to interpret the model's internal state. This precise understanding of the internal representations allows us to control the model's behaviour with simple vector arithmetic. Linear representations enable significant interpretability progress, which we demonstrate with further exploration of how the world model is computed.

Since the origins of the Internet, various vulnerabilities exploiting the IP fragmentation process have plagued IPv4 protocol, many leading to a wide range of attacks. IPv6 modified the handling of fragmentations and introduced a specific extension header, not solving the related problems, as proved by extensive literature. One of the primary sources of problems has been the overlapping fragments, which result in unexpected or malicious packets when reassembled. To overcome the problem related to fragmentation, the authors of RFC 5722 decided that IPv6 hosts MUST silently drop overlapping fragments. Since then, several studies have proposed methodologies to check if IPv6 hosts accept overlapping fragments and are still vulnerable to related attacks. However, some of the above methodologies have not been proven complete or need to be more accurate. In this paper we propose a novel model to check IPv6 fragmentation handling specifically suited for the reassembling strategies of modern operating systems. Previous models, indeed, considered OS reassembly policy as byte-based. However, nowadays, reassembly policies are fragment-based, making previous models inadequate. Our model leverages the commutative property of the checksum, simplifying the whole assessing process. Starting with this new model, we were able to better evaluate the RFC-5722 and RFC-9099 compliance of modern operating systems against fragmentation handling. Our results suggest that IPv6 fragmentation can still be considered a threat and that more effort is needed to solve related security issues.

Machine learning (ML) techniques have been proposed to automatically select the best solver from a portfolio of solvers, based on predicted performance. These techniques have been applied to various problems, such as Boolean Satisfiability, Traveling Salesperson, Graph Coloring, and others. These methods, known as meta-solvers, take an instance of a problem and a portfolio of solvers as input. They then predict the best-performing solver and execute it to deliver a solution. Typically, the quality of the solution improves with a longer computational time. This has led to the development of anytime selectors, which consider both the instance and a user-prescribed computational time limit. Anytime meta-solvers predict the best-performing solver within the specified time limit. Constructing an anytime meta-solver is considerably more challenging than building a meta-solver without the "anytime" feature. In this study, we focus on the task of designing anytime meta-solvers for the NP-hard optimization problem of Pseudo-Boolean Optimization (PBO), which generalizes Satisfiability and Maximum Satisfiability problems. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated via extensive empirical study in which our anytime meta-solver improves dramatically on the performance of Mixed Integer Programming solver Gurobi, which is the best-performing single solver in the portfolio. For example, out of all instances and time limits for which Gurobi failed to find feasible solutions, our meta-solver identified feasible solutions for 47% of these.

The use of behavioural data in insurance is loaded with promises and unresolved issues. This paper explores the related opportunities and challenges analysing the use of telematics data in third-party liability motor insurance. Behavioural data are used not only to refine the risk profile of policyholders, but also to implement innovative coaching strategies, feeding back to the drivers the aggregated information obtained from the data. The purpose is to encourage an improvement in their driving style. Our research explores the effectiveness of coaching on the basis of an empirical investigation of the dataset of a company selling telematics motor insurance policies. The results of our quantitative analysis show that this effectiveness crucially depends on the propensity of policyholders to engage with the telematics app. We observe engagement as an additional kind of behaviour, producing second-order behavioural data that can also be recorded and strategically used by insurance companies. The conclusions discuss potential advantages and risks connected with this extended interpretation of behavioural data.

Humans possess the cognitive ability to comprehend scenes in a compositional manner. To empower AI systems with similar capabilities, object-centric learning aims to acquire representations of individual objects from visual scenes without any supervision. Although recent advances in object-centric learning have made remarkable progress on complex synthesis datasets, there is a huge challenge for application to complex real-world scenes. One of the essential reasons is the scarcity of real-world datasets specifically tailored to object-centric learning. To address this problem, we propose a versatile real-world dataset of tabletop scenes for object-centric learning called OCTScenes, which is meticulously designed to serve as a benchmark for comparing, evaluating, and analyzing object-centric learning methods. OCTScenes contains 5000 tabletop scenes with a total of 15 objects. Each scene is captured in 60 frames covering a 360-degree perspective. Consequently, OCTScenes is a versatile benchmark dataset that can simultaneously satisfy the evaluation of object-centric learning methods based on single-image, video, and multi-view. Extensive experiments of representative object-centric learning methods are conducted on OCTScenes. The results demonstrate the shortcomings of state-of-the-art methods for learning meaningful representations from real-world data, despite their impressive performance on complex synthesis datasets. Furthermore, OCTScenes can serve as a catalyst for the advancement of existing methods, inspiring them to adapt to real-world scenes. Graph neural networks (GNNs) is widely used to learn a powerful representation of graph-structured data. Recent work demonstrates that transferring knowledge from self-supervised tasks to downstream tasks could further improve graph representation. However, there is an inherent gap between self-supervised tasks and downstream tasks in terms of optimization objective and training data. Conventional pre-training methods may be not effective enough on knowledge transfer since they do not make any adaptation for downstream tasks. To solve such problems, we propose a new transfer learning paradigm on GNNs which could effectively leverage self-supervised tasks as auxiliary tasks to help the target task. Our methods would adaptively select and combine different auxiliary tasks with the target task in the fine-tuning stage. We design an adaptive auxiliary loss weighting model to learn the weights of auxiliary tasks by quantifying the consistency between auxiliary tasks and the target task. In addition, we learn the weighting model through meta-learning. Our methods can be applied to various transfer learning approaches, it performs well not only in multi-task learning but also in pre-training and fine-tuning. Comprehensive experiments on multiple downstream tasks demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively combine auxiliary tasks with the target task and significantly improve the performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.

This paper surveys the machine learning literature and presents machine learning as optimization models. Such models can benefit from the advancement of numerical optimization techniques which have already played a distinctive role in several machine learning settings. Particularly, mathematical optimization models are presented for commonly used machine learning approaches for regression, classification, clustering, and deep neural networks as well new emerging applications in machine teaching and empirical model learning. The strengths and the shortcomings of these models are discussed and potential research directions are highlighted.

Visual Question Answering (VQA) models have struggled with counting objects in natural images so far. We identify a fundamental problem due to soft attention in these models as a cause. To circumvent this problem, we propose a neural network component that allows robust counting from object proposals. Experiments on a toy task show the effectiveness of this component and we obtain state-of-the-art accuracy on the number category of the VQA v2 dataset without negatively affecting other categories, even outperforming ensemble models with our single model. On a difficult balanced pair metric, the component gives a substantial improvement in counting over a strong baseline by 6.6%.

Detecting carried objects is one of the requirements for developing systems to reason about activities involving people and objects. We present an approach to detect carried objects from a single video frame with a novel method that incorporates features from multiple scales. Initially, a foreground mask in a video frame is segmented into multi-scale superpixels. Then the human-like regions in the segmented area are identified by matching a set of extracted features from superpixels against learned features in a codebook. A carried object probability map is generated using the complement of the matching probabilities of superpixels to human-like regions and background information. A group of superpixels with high carried object probability and strong edge support is then merged to obtain the shape of the carried object. We applied our method to two challenging datasets, and results show that our method is competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art.
