Interoperability remains a challenge in the construction industry. In this study, we propose a semantic enrichment approach to construct BIM knowledge graphs from pure building object geometries and demonstrate its potential to support BIM interoperability. Our approach involves machine learning and rule-based methods for object classification, relationship determination (e.g., hosting and adjacent) and attribute computation. The enriched results are compiled into a BIM graph. A case study was conducted to illustrate the approach for facilitating interoperability between different versions of the BIM authoring software Autodesk Revit. First, pure object geometries of an architectural apartment model were exported from Revit 2023 and fed into the developed tools in sequence to generate a BIM graph. Then, essential information was extracted from the graph and used to reconstruct an architectural model in the version 2022 of Revit. Upon examination, the reconstructed model was consistent with the original one. The success of this experiment demonstrates the feasibility of generating a BIM graph from object geometries and utilizing it to support interoperability.
Regulatory bodies worldwide are intensifying their efforts to ensure transparency in influencer marketing on social media through instruments like the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) in the European Union, or Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act. Yet enforcing these obligations has proven to be highly problematic due to the sheer scale of the influencer market. The task of automatically detecting sponsored content aims to enable the monitoring and enforcement of such regulations at scale. Current research in this field primarily frames this problem as a machine learning task, focusing on developing models that achieve high classification performance in detecting ads. These machine learning tasks rely on human data annotation to provide ground truth information. However, agreement between annotators is often low, leading to inconsistent labels that hinder the reliability of models. To improve annotation accuracy and, thus, the detection of sponsored content, we propose using chatGPT to augment the annotation process with phrases identified as relevant features and brief explanations. Our experiments show that this approach consistently improves inter-annotator agreement and annotation accuracy. Additionally, our survey of user experience in the annotation task indicates that the explanations improve the annotators' confidence and streamline the process. Our proposed methods can ultimately lead to more transparency and alignment with regulatory requirements in sponsored content detection.
The number of published research papers has experienced exponential growth in recent years, which makes it crucial to develop new methods for efficient and versatile information extraction and knowledge discovery. To address this need, we propose a Semantic Knowledge Graph (SKG) that integrates semantic concepts from abstracts and other meta-information to represent the corpus. The SKG can support various semantic queries in academic literature thanks to the high diversity and rich information content stored within. To extract knowledge from unstructured text, we develop a Knowledge Extraction Module that includes a semi-supervised pipeline for entity extraction and entity normalization. We also create an ontology to integrate the concepts with other meta information, enabling us to build the SKG. Furthermore, we design and develop a dataflow system that demonstrates how to conduct various semantic queries flexibly and interactively over the SKG. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct the research based on the visualization literature and provide real-world use cases to show the usefulness of the SKG. To cope with the high requirements during the computation of semantic segmentations of earth observation imagery, current state-of-the-art pipelines divide the corresponding data into smaller images. Existing methods and benchmark datasets oftentimes rely on pixel-based tiling schemes or on geo-tiling schemes employed by web mapping applications. The selection of subimages (comprising size, location and orientation) is crucial. It affects the available context information of each pixel, defines the number of tiles during training, and influences the degree of information degradation while down- and up-sampling the tile contents to the size required by the segmentation model. We propose a new segmentation pipeline for earth observation imagery relying on a tiling scheme that creates geo-tiles based on the geo-information of the raster data. This approach exhibits several beneficial properties compared to pixel-based or common web mapping approaches. The proposed tiling scheme shows flexible customization properties regarding tile granularity, tile stride and image boundary alignment. This allows us to perform a tile specific data augmentation during training and a substitution of pixel predictions with limited context information using data of overlapping tiles during inference. The generated tiles show a consistent spatial tile extent w.r.t. heterogeneous sensors, varying recording distances and different latitudes. We demonstrate how the proposed tiling system allows to improve the results of current state-of-the-art semantic segmentation models. To foster future research we make the source code publicly available.
In recent years, there has been an increased focus on early detection, prevention, and prediction of diseases. This, together with advances in sensor technology and the Internet of Things, has led to accelerated efforts in the development of personal health monitoring systems. Semantic technologies have emerged as an effective way to not only deal with the issue of interoperability associated with heterogeneous health sensor data, but also to represent expert health knowledge to support complex reasoning required for decision-making. This study evaluates the state of the art in the use of semantic technologies in sensor-based personal health monitoring systems. Using a systematic approach, a total of 40 systems representing the state of the art in the field are analysed. Through this analysis, six key challenges that such systems must overcome for optimal and effective health monitoring are identified: interoperability, context awareness, situation detection, situation prediction, decision support, and uncertainty handling. The study critically evaluates the extent to which these systems incorporate semantic technologies to deal with these challenges and identifies the prominent architectures, system development and evaluation methodologies that are used. The study provides a comprehensive mapping of the field, identifies inadequacies in the state of the art, and provides recommendations for future research directions.
Prior beliefs about the latent function to shape inductive biases can be incorporated into a Gaussian Process (GP) via the kernel. However, beyond kernel choices, the decision-making process of GP models remains poorly understood. In this work, we contribute an analysis of the loss landscape for GP models using methods from physics. We demonstrate $\nu$-continuity for Matern kernels and outline aspects of catastrophe theory at critical points in the loss landscape. By directly including $\nu$ in the hyperparameter optimisation for Matern kernels, we find that typical values of $\nu$ are far from optimal in terms of performance, yet prevail in the literature due to the increased computational speed. We also provide an a priori method for evaluating the effect of GP ensembles and discuss various voting approaches based on physical properties of the loss landscape. The utility of these approaches is demonstrated for various synthetic and real datasets. Our findings provide an enhanced understanding of the decision-making process behind GPs and offer practical guidance for improving their performance and interpretability in a range of applications.
Large language models (LLMs) trained on a substantial corpus of human knowledge and literature productively work with a large array of facts from that corpus. Surprisingly, they are also able to re-create the behaviors of personae that are captured within the corpus. By forming teams of simulated personae, supplying contexts that set the stage, and providing gentle prompts, one can move through scenarios that elicit expert behavior to perform meaningful cognitive work. The power of this strategy is demonstrated with two examples, one attacking factuality of LLM responses and the other reproducing a very recently published result in quantum optics.
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been successfully used in many problems involving graph-structured data, achieving state-of-the-art performance. GNNs typically employ a message-passing scheme, in which every node aggregates information from its neighbors using a permutation-invariant aggregation function. Standard well-examined choices such as the mean or sum aggregation functions have limited capabilities, as they are not able to capture interactions among neighbors. In this work, we formalize these interactions using an information-theoretic framework that notably includes synergistic information. Driven by this definition, we introduce the Graph Ordering Attention (GOAT) layer, a novel GNN component that captures interactions between nodes in a neighborhood. This is achieved by learning local node orderings via an attention mechanism and processing the ordered representations using a recurrent neural network aggregator. This design allows us to make use of a permutation-sensitive aggregator while maintaining the permutation-equivariance of the proposed GOAT layer. The GOAT model demonstrates its increased performance in modeling graph metrics that capture complex information, such as the betweenness centrality and the effective size of a node. In practical use-cases, its superior modeling capability is confirmed through its success in several real-world node classification benchmarks.
Visual dialogue is a challenging task that needs to extract implicit information from both visual (image) and textual (dialogue history) contexts. Classical approaches pay more attention to the integration of the current question, vision knowledge and text knowledge, despising the heterogeneous semantic gaps between the cross-modal information. In the meantime, the concatenation operation has become de-facto standard to the cross-modal information fusion, which has a limited ability in information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a novel Knowledge-Bridge Graph Network (KBGN) model by using graph to bridge the cross-modal semantic relations between vision and text knowledge in fine granularity, as well as retrieving required knowledge via an adaptive information selection mode. Moreover, the reasoning clues for visual dialogue can be clearly drawn from intra-modal entities and inter-modal bridges. Experimental results on VisDial v1.0 and VisDial-Q datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms exiting models with state-of-the-art results.
Automatic KB completion for commonsense knowledge graphs (e.g., ATOMIC and ConceptNet) poses unique challenges compared to the much studied conventional knowledge bases (e.g., Freebase). Commonsense knowledge graphs use free-form text to represent nodes, resulting in orders of magnitude more nodes compared to conventional KBs (18x more nodes in ATOMIC compared to Freebase (FB15K-237)). Importantly, this implies significantly sparser graph structures - a major challenge for existing KB completion methods that assume densely connected graphs over a relatively smaller set of nodes. In this paper, we present novel KB completion models that can address these challenges by exploiting the structural and semantic context of nodes. Specifically, we investigate two key ideas: (1) learning from local graph structure, using graph convolutional networks and automatic graph densification and (2) transfer learning from pre-trained language models to knowledge graphs for enhanced contextual representation of knowledge. We describe our method to incorporate information from both these sources in a joint model and provide the first empirical results for KB completion on ATOMIC and evaluation with ranking metrics on ConceptNet. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of language model representations in boosting link prediction performance and the advantages of learning from local graph structure (+1.5 points in MRR for ConceptNet) when training on subgraphs for computational efficiency. Further analysis on model predictions shines light on the types of commonsense knowledge that language models capture well.
Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) is believed to be a crucial step towards natural language understanding and has been widely studied. Recent years, end-to-end SRL with recurrent neural networks (RNN) has gained increasing attention. However, it remains a major challenge for RNNs to handle structural information and long range dependencies. In this paper, we present a simple and effective architecture for SRL which aims to address these problems. Our model is based on self-attention which can directly capture the relationships between two tokens regardless of their distance. Our single model achieves F$_1=83.4$ on the CoNLL-2005 shared task dataset and F$_1=82.7$ on the CoNLL-2012 shared task dataset, which outperforms the previous state-of-the-art results by $1.8$ and $1.0$ F$_1$ score respectively. Besides, our model is computationally efficient, and the parsing speed is 50K tokens per second on a single Titan X GPU.
