Integer linear programming models a wide range of practical combinatorial optimization problems and has significant impacts in industry and management sectors. This work develops the first standalone local search solver for general integer linear programming validated on a large heterogeneous problem dataset. We propose a local search framework that switches in three modes, namely Search, Improve, and Restore modes, and design tailored operators adapted to different modes, thus improve the quality of the current solution according to different situations. For the Search and Restore modes, we propose an operator named tight move, which adaptively modifies variables' values trying to make some constraint tight. For the Improve mode, an efficient operator lift move is proposed to improve the quality of the objective function while maintaining feasibility. Putting these together, we develop a local search solver for integer linear programming called Local-ILP. Experiments conducted on the MIPLIB dataset show the effectiveness of our solver in solving large-scale hard integer linear programming problems within a reasonably short time. Local-ILP is competitive and complementary to the state-of-the-art commercial solver Gurobi and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art non-commercial solver SCIP. Moreover, our solver establishes new records for 6 MIPLIB open instances.

In this work we propose tailored model order reduction for varying boundary optimal control problems governed by parametric partial differential equations. With varying boundary control, we mean that a specific parameter changes where the boundary control acts on the system. This peculiar formulation might benefit from model order reduction. Indeed, fast and reliable simulations of this model can be of utmost usefulness in many applied fields, such as geophysics and energy engineering. However, varying boundary control features very complicated and diversified parametric behaviour for the state and adjoint variables. The state solution, for example, changing the boundary control parameter, might feature transport phenomena. Moreover, the problem loses its affine structure. It is well known that classical model order reduction techniques fail in this setting, both in accuracy and in efficiency. Thus, we propose reduced approaches inspired by the ones used when dealing with wave-like phenomena. Indeed, we compare standard proper orthogonal decomposition with two tailored strategies: geometric recasting and local proper orthogonal decomposition. Geometric recasting solves the optimization system in a reference domain simplifying the problem at hand avoiding hyper-reduction, while local proper orthogonal decomposition builds local bases to increase the accuracy of the reduced solution in very general settings (where geometric recasting is unfeasible). We compare the various approaches on two different numerical experiments based on geometries of increasing complexity.

In this tutorial, we present a computational overview on computing Nash equilibria in Integer Programming Games ($IPG$s), $i.e.$, how to compute solutions for a class of non-cooperative and nonconvex games where each player solves a mixed-integer optimization problem. $IPG$s are a broad class of games extending the modeling power of mixed-integer optimization to multi-agent settings. This class of games includes, for instance, any finite game and any multi-agent extension of traditional combinatorial optimization problems. After providing some background motivation and context of applications, we systematically review and classify the state-of-the-art algorithms to compute Nash equilibria. We propose an essential taxonomy of the algorithmic ingredients needed to compute equilibria, and we describe the theoretical and practical challenges associated with equilibria computation. Finally, we quantitatively and qualitatively compare a sequential Stackelberg game with a simultaneous $IPG$ to highlight the different properties of their solutions.

In this paper, we develop an {\em epsilon admissible subsets} (EAS) model selection approach for performing group variable selection in the high-dimensional multivariate regression setting. This EAS strategy is designed to estimate a posterior-like, generalized fiducial distribution over a parsimonious class of models in the setting of correlated predictors and/or in the absence of a sparsity assumption. The effectiveness of our approach, to this end, is demonstrated empirically in simulation studies, and is compared to other state-of-the-art model/variable selection procedures. Furthermore, assuming a matrix-Normal linear model we show that the EAS strategy achieves {\em strong model selection consistency} in the high-dimensional setting if there does exist a sparse, true data generating set of predictors. In contrast to Bayesian approaches for model selection, our generalized fiducial approach completely avoids the problem of simultaneously having to specify arbitrary prior distributions for model parameters and penalize model complexity; our approach allows for inference directly on the model complexity. \textcolor{black}{Implementation of the method is illustrated through yeast data to identify significant cell-cycle regulating transcription factors.

Recently, hybrid metaheuristics have become a trend in operations research. A successful example combines the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures (GRASP) and data mining techniques, where frequent patterns found in high-quality solutions can lead to an efficient exploration of the search space, along with a significant reduction of computational time. In this work, a GRASP-based state-of-the-art heuristic for the Minimum Latency Problem (MLP) is improved by means of data mining techniques for two MLP variants. Computational experiments showed that the approaches with data mining were able to match or improve the solution quality for a large number of instances, together with a substantial reduction of running time. In addition, 88 new cost values of solutions are introduced into the literature. To support our results, tests of statistical significance, impact of using mined patterns, equal time comparisons and time-to-target plots are provided.

We introduce ExtremeBB, a textual database of over 53.5M posts made by 38.5k users on 12 extremist bulletin board forums promoting online hate, harassment, the manosphere and other forms of extremism. It enables large-scale analyses of qualitative and quantitative historical trends going back two decades: measuring hate speech and toxicity; tracing the evolution of different strands of extremist ideology; tracking the relationships between online subcultures, extremist behaviours, and real-world violence; and monitoring extremist communities in near real time. This can shed light not only on the spread of problematic ideologies but also the effectiveness of interventions. ExtremeBB comes with a robust ethical data-sharing regime that allows us to share data with academics worldwide. Since 2020, access has been granted to 49 licensees in 16 research groups from 12 institutions.

Real-time computation of optimal control is a challenging problem and, to solve this difficulty, many frameworks proposed to use learning techniques to learn (possibly sub-optimal) controllers and enable their usage in an online fashion. Among these techniques, the optimal motion framework is a simple, yet powerful technique, that obtained success in many complex real-world applications. The main idea of this approach is to take advantage of dynamic motion primitives, a widely used tool in robotics to learn trajectories from demonstrations. While usually these demonstrations come from humans, the optimal motion framework is based on demonstrations coming from optimal solutions, such as the ones obtained by numeric solvers. As usual in many learning techniques, a drawback of this approach is that it is hard to estimate the suboptimality of learned solutions, since finding easily computable and non-trivial upper bounds to the error between an optimal solution and a learned solution is, in general, unfeasible. However, we show in this paper that it is possible to estimate this error for a broad class of problems. Furthermore, we apply this estimation technique to achieve a novel and more efficient sampling scheme to be used within the optimal motion framework, enabling the usage of this framework in some scenarios where the computational resources are limited.

Ensuring the security of networked systems is a significant problem, considering the susceptibility of modern infrastructures and technologies to adversarial interference. A central component of this problem is how defensive resources should be allocated to mitigate the severity of potential attacks on the system. In this paper, we consider this in the context of a General Lotto game, where a defender and attacker deploys resources on the nodes of a network, and the objective is to secure as many links as possible. The defender secures a link only if it out-competes the attacker on both of its associated nodes. For bipartite networks, we completely characterize equilibrium payoffs and strategies for both the defender and attacker. Surprisingly, the resulting payoffs are the same for any bipartite graph. On arbitrary network structures, we provide lower and upper bounds on the defender's max-min value. Notably, the equilibrium payoff from bipartite networks serves as the lower bound. These results suggest that more connected networks are easier to defend against attacks. We confirm these findings with simulations that compute deterministic allocation strategies on large random networks. This also highlights the importance of randomization in the equilibrium strategies.

In a recent article the authors showed that the radiative Transfer equations with multiple frequencies and scattering can be formulated as a nonlinear integral system. In the present article, the formulation is extended to handle reflective boundary conditions. The fixed point method to solve the system is shown to be monotone. The discretization is done with a $P^1$ Finite Element Method. The convolution integrals are precomputed at every vertices of the mesh and stored in compressed hierarchical matrices, using Partially Pivoted Adaptive Cross-Approximation. Then the fixed point iterations involve only matrix vector products. The method is $O(N\sqrt[3]{N}\ln N)$, with respect to the number of vertices, when everything is smooth. A numerical implementation is proposed and tested on two examples. As there are some analogies with ray tracing the programming is complex.

Constraint Programming (CP) is a declarative programming paradigm that allows for modeling and solving combinatorial optimization problems, such as the Job-Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP). While CP solvers manage to find optimal or near-optimal solutions for small instances, they do not scale well to large ones, i.e., they require long computation times or yield low-quality solutions. Therefore, real-world scheduling applications often resort to fast, handcrafted, priority-based dispatching heuristics to find a good initial solution and then refine it using optimization methods. This paper proposes a novel end-to-end approach to solving scheduling problems by means of CP and Reinforcement Learning (RL). In contrast to previous RL methods, tailored for a given problem by including procedural simulation algorithms, complex feature engineering, or handcrafted reward functions, our neural-network architecture and training algorithm merely require a generic CP encoding of some scheduling problem along with a set of small instances. Our approach leverages existing CP solvers to train an agent learning a Priority Dispatching Rule (PDR) that generalizes well to large instances, even from separate datasets. We evaluate our method on seven JSSP datasets from the literature, showing its ability to find higher-quality solutions for very large instances than obtained by static PDRs and by a CP solver within the same time limit.

Supervised learning problems with side information in the form of a network arise frequently in applications in genomics, proteomics and neuroscience. For example, in genetic applications, the network side information can accurately capture background biological information on the intricate relations among the relevant genes. In this paper, we initiate a study of Bayes optimal learning in high-dimensional linear regression with network side information. To this end, we first introduce a simple generative model (called the Reg-Graph model) which posits a joint distribution for the supervised data and the observed network through a common set of latent parameters. Next, we introduce an iterative algorithm based on Approximate Message Passing (AMP) which is provably Bayes optimal under very general conditions. In addition, we characterize the limiting mutual information between the latent signal and the data observed, and thus precisely quantify the statistical impact of the network side information. Finally, supporting numerical experiments suggest that the introduced algorithm has excellent performance in finite samples.
