We propose a novel B-spline trajectory optimization method for autonomous racing. We consider the unavailability of sophisticated race car and race track dynamics in early-stage autonomous motorsports development and derive methods that work with limited dynamics data and additional conservative constraints. We formulate a minimum-curvature optimization problem with only the spline control points as optimization variables. We then compare the current state-of-the-art method with our optimization result, which achieves a similar level of optimality with a 90% reduction on the decision variable dimension, and in addition offers mathematical smoothness guarantee and flexible manipulation options. We concurrently reduce the problem computation time from seconds to milliseconds for a long race track, enabling future online adaptation of the previously offline technique.

The EPC GEN 2 communication protocol for Ultra-high frequency Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has offered a promising avenue for advancing the intelligence of transportation infrastructure. With the capability of linking vehicles to RFID readers to crowdsource information from RFID tags on road infrastructures, the RF-enhanced road infrastructure (REI) can potentially transform data acquisition for urban transportation. Despite its potential, the broader adoption of RFID technologies in building intelligent roads has been limited by a deficiency in understanding how the GEN 2 protocol impacts system performance under different transportation settings. This paper fills this knowledge gap by presenting the system architecture and detailing the design challenges associated with REI. Comprehensive real-world experiments are conducted to assess REI's effectiveness across various urban contexts. The results yield crucial insights into the optimal design of on-vehicle RFID readers and on-road RFID tags, considering the constraints imposed by vehicle dynamics, road geometries, and tag placements. With the optimized designs of encoding schemes for reader-tag communication and on-vehicle antennas, REI is able to fulfill the requirements of traffic sign inventory management and environmental monitoring while falling short of catering to the demand for high-speed navigation. In particular, the Miller 2 encoding scheme strikes the best balance between reading performance (e.g., throughput) and noise tolerance for the multipath effect. Additionally, we show that the on-vehicle antenna should be oriented to maximize the available time for reading on-road tags, although it may reduce the received power by the tags in the forward link.

The zero-shot open-vocabulary challenge in image classification is tackled by pretrained vision-language models like CLIP, which benefit from incorporating class-specific knowledge from large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. However, biases in CLIP lead to similar descriptions for distinct but related classes, prompting our novel image classification framework via hierarchical comparisons: using LLMs to recursively group classes into hierarchies and classifying images by comparing image-text embeddings at each hierarchy level, resulting in an intuitive, effective, and explainable approach.

To the best of our knowledge, there are no methods today for training differentially private regression models on sparse input data. To remedy this, we adapt the Frank-Wolfe algorithm for $L_1$ penalized linear regression to be aware of sparse inputs and to use them effectively. In doing so, we reduce the training time of the algorithm from $\mathcal{O}( T D S + T N S)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N S + T \sqrt{D} \log{D} + T S^2)$, where $T$ is the number of iterations and a sparsity rate $S$ of a dataset with $N$ rows and $D$ features. Our results demonstrate that this procedure can reduce runtime by a factor of up to $2,200\times$, depending on the value of the privacy parameter $\epsilon$ and the sparsity of the dataset.

Robust fine-tuning aims to achieve competitive in-distribution (ID) performance while maintaining the out-of-distribution (OOD) robustness of a pre-trained model when transferring it to a downstream task. Recently, projected gradient descent has been successfully used in robust fine-tuning by constraining the deviation from the initialization of the fine-tuned model explicitly through projection. However, algorithmically, two limitations prevent this method from being adopted more widely, scalability and efficiency. In this paper, we propose a new projection-based fine-tuning algorithm, Fast Trainable Projection (FTP) for computationally efficient learning of per-layer projection constraints, resulting in an average $35\%$ speedup on our benchmarks compared to prior works. FTP can be combined with existing optimizers such as AdamW, and be used in a plug-and-play fashion. Finally, we show that FTP is a special instance of hyper-optimizers that tune the hyper-parameters of optimizers in a learnable manner through nested differentiation. Empirically, we show superior robustness on OOD datasets, including domain shifts and natural corruptions, across four different vision tasks with five different pre-trained models. Additionally, we demonstrate that FTP is broadly applicable and beneficial to other learning scenarios such as low-label and continual learning settings thanks to its easy adaptability. We introduce the task of open-vocabulary 3D instance segmentation. Current approaches for 3D instance segmentation can typically only recognize object categories from a pre-defined closed set of classes that are annotated in the training datasets. This results in important limitations for real-world applications where one might need to perform tasks guided by novel, open-vocabulary queries related to a wide variety of objects. Recently, open-vocabulary 3D scene understanding methods have emerged to address this problem by learning queryable features for each point in the scene. While such a representation can be directly employed to perform semantic segmentation, existing methods cannot separate multiple object instances. In this work, we address this limitation, and propose OpenMask3D, which is a zero-shot approach for open-vocabulary 3D instance segmentation. Guided by predicted class-agnostic 3D instance masks, our model aggregates per-mask features via multi-view fusion of CLIP-based image embeddings. Experiments and ablation studies on ScanNet200 and Replica show that OpenMask3D outperforms other open-vocabulary methods, especially on the long-tail distribution. Qualitative experiments further showcase OpenMask3D's ability to segment object properties based on free-form queries describing geometry, affordances, and materials.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) remains challenging due to the complex entities, like nested, overlapping, and discontinuous entities. Existing approaches, such as sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) generation and span-based classification, have shown impressive performance on various NER subtasks, but they are difficult to scale to datasets with longer input text because of either exposure bias issue or inefficient computation. In this paper, we propose a novel Sequence-to-Forest generation paradigm, S2F-NER, which can directly extract entities in sentence via a Forest decoder that decode multiple entities in parallel rather than sequentially. Specifically, our model generate each path of each tree in forest autoregressively, where the maximum depth of each tree is three (which is the shortest feasible length for complex NER and is far smaller than the decoding length of Seq2Seq). Based on this novel paradigm, our model can elegantly mitigates the exposure bias problem and keep the simplicity of Seq2Seq. Experimental results show that our model significantly outperforms the baselines on three discontinuous NER datasets and on two nested NER datasets, especially for discontinuous entity recognition.

Social alignment in AI systems aims to ensure that these models behave according to established societal values. However, unlike humans, who derive consensus on value judgments through social interaction, current language models (LMs) are trained to rigidly replicate their training corpus in isolation, leading to subpar generalization in unfamiliar scenarios and vulnerability to adversarial attacks. This work presents a novel training paradigm that permits LMs to learn from simulated social interactions. In comparison to existing methodologies, our approach is considerably more scalable and efficient, demonstrating superior performance in alignment benchmarks and human evaluations. This paradigm shift in the training of LMs brings us a step closer to developing AI systems that can robustly and accurately reflect societal norms and values.

Current disfluency detection models focus on individual utterances each from a single speaker. However, numerous discontinuity phenomena in spoken conversational transcripts occur across multiple turns, hampering human readability and the performance of downstream NLP tasks. This study addresses these phenomena by proposing an innovative Multi-Turn Cleanup task for spoken conversational transcripts and collecting a new dataset, MultiTurnCleanup1. We design a data labeling schema to collect the high-quality dataset and provide extensive data analysis. Furthermore, we leverage two modeling approaches for experimental evaluation as benchmarks for future research.

We establish a broad methodological foundation for mixed-integer optimization with learned constraints. We propose an end-to-end pipeline for data-driven decision making in which constraints and objectives are directly learned from data using machine learning, and the trained models are embedded in an optimization formulation. We exploit the mixed-integer optimization-representability of many machine learning methods, including linear models, decision trees, ensembles, and multi-layer perceptrons, which allows us to capture various underlying relationships between decisions, contextual variables, and outcomes. We also introduce two approaches for handling the inherent uncertainty of learning from data. First, we characterize a decision trust region using the convex hull of the observations, to ensure credible recommendations and avoid extrapolation. We efficiently incorporate this representation using column generation and propose a more flexible formulation to deal with low-density regions and high-dimensional datasets. Then, we propose an ensemble learning approach that enforces constraint satisfaction over multiple bootstrapped estimators or multiple algorithms. In combination with domain-driven components, the embedded models and trust region define a mixed-integer optimization problem for prescription generation. We implement this framework as a Python package (OptiCL) for practitioners. We demonstrate the method in both World Food Programme planning and chemotherapy optimization. The case studies illustrate the framework's ability to generate high-quality prescriptions as well as the value added by the trust region, the use of ensembles to control model robustness, the consideration of multiple machine learning methods, and the inclusion of multiple learned constraints.

Signalized intersections in arterial roads result in persistent vehicle idling and excess accelerations, contributing to fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. There has thus been a line of work studying eco-driving control strategies to reduce fuel consumption and emission levels at intersections. However, methods to devise effective control strategies across a variety of traffic settings remain elusive. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) approach to learn effective eco-driving control strategies. We analyze the potential impact of a learned strategy on fuel consumption, CO2 emission, and travel time and compare with naturalistic driving and model-based baselines. We further demonstrate the generalizability of the learned policies under mixed traffic scenarios. Simulation results indicate that scenarios with 100% penetration of connected autonomous vehicles (CAV) may yield as high as 18% reduction in fuel consumption and 25% reduction in CO2 emission levels while even improving travel speed by 20%. Furthermore, results indicate that even 25% CAV penetration can bring at least 50% of the total fuel and emission reduction benefits.
