Teleoperated or remote-controlled driving complements automated driving and acts as transitional technology toward full automation. An economic advantage of teleoperated driving in logistics operations lies in managing fleets with fewer teleoperators compared to vehicles with in-vehicle drivers. This alleviates growing truck driver shortage problems in the logistics industry and saves costs. However, a trade-off exists between the teleoperator-to-vehicle ratio and the service level of teleoperation. This study designs a simulation framework to explore this trade-off generating multiple performance indicators as proxies for teleoperation service level. By applying the framework, we identify factors influencing the trade-off and optimal teleoperator-to-vehicle ratios under different scenarios. Our case study on road freight tours in The Netherlands reveals that for any operational setting, a teleoperation-to-vehicle ratio below one can manage all freight truck tours without delay, while one represents the current situation. The minimum teleoperator-to-vehicle ratio for zero-delay operations is never above 0.6, implying a minimum of 40% teleoperation labor cost saving. For operations where a small delay is allowed, teleoperator-to-vehicle ratios as low as 0.4 are shown to be feasible, which indicates potential savings of up to 60%. This confirms great promise for a positive business case for the teleoperated driving as a service.
End-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) models have seen revolutionary quality gains with the recent development of large-scale universal speech models (USM). However, deploying these massive USMs is extremely expensive due to the enormous memory usage and computational cost. Therefore, model compression is an important research topic to fit USM-based ASR under budget in real-world scenarios. In this study, we propose a USM fine-tuning approach for ASR, with a low-bit quantization and N:M structured sparsity aware paradigm on the model weights, reducing the model complexity from parameter precision and matrix topology perspectives. We conducted extensive experiments with a 2-billion parameter USM on a large-scale voice search dataset to evaluate our proposed method. A series of ablation studies validate the effectiveness of up to int4 quantization and 2:4 sparsity. However, a single compression technique fails to recover the performance well under extreme setups including int2 quantization and 1:4 sparsity. By contrast, our proposed method can compress the model to have 9.4% of the size, at the cost of only 7.3% relative word error rate (WER) regressions. We also provided in-depth analyses on the results and discussions on the limitations and potential solutions, which would be valuable for future studies.
We evaluate the use of software interpretation to push High Level Synthesis of application-specific accelerators toward a higher level of abstraction. Our methodology is supported by a formal power consumption model that computes the power consumption of accelerator components, accurately predicting the power consumption on new designs from prior optimization estimations. We demonstrate how our approach simplifies the re-use of power optimizations across distinct designs, by leveraging the higher level of design abstraction, using two accelerators representative of the robotics domain, implemented through the Bambu High Level Synthesis tool. Results support the research hypothesis, achieving predictions accurate within +/- 1%.
Test-driven development (TDD) is a widely-employed software development practice that mandates writing test cases based on requirements before writing the actual code. While writing test cases is the centerpiece of TDD, it is time-consuming, expensive, and often shunned by developers. To address these issues associated with TDD, automated test case generation approaches have recently been investigated. Such approaches take source code as input, but not the requirements. Therefore, existing work does not fully support true TDD, as actual code is required to generate test cases. In addition, current deep learning-based test case generation approaches are trained with one learning objective, i.e., to generate test cases that are exactly matched with the ground-truth test cases. However, such approaches may limit the model's ability to generate different yet correct test cases. In this paper, we introduce PyTester, a Text-to-Testcase generation approach that can automatically generate syntactically correct, executable, complete, and effective test cases while being aligned with a given natural language requirement. We evaluate PyTester on the public APPS benchmark dataset, and the results show that our Deep RL approach enables PyTester, a small language model, to outperform much larger language models like GPT3.5, StarCoder, and InCoder. Our findings suggest that future research could consider improving small over large LMs for better resource efficiency by integrating the SE domain knowledge into the design of reinforcement learning architecture.
Knowledge distillation (KD) is used to enhance automatic speaker verification performance by ensuring consistency between large teacher networks and lightweight student networks at the embedding level or label level. However, the conventional label-level KD overlooks the significant knowledge from non-target speakers, particularly their classification probabilities, which can be crucial for automatic speaker verification. In this paper, we first demonstrate that leveraging a larger number of training non-target speakers improves the performance of automatic speaker verification models. Inspired by this finding about the importance of non-target speakers' knowledge, we modified the conventional label-level KD by disentangling and emphasizing the classification probabilities of non-target speakers during knowledge distillation. The proposed method is applied to three different student model architectures and achieves an average of 13.67% improvement in EER on the VoxCeleb dataset compared to embedding-level and conventional label-level KD methods.
Wire harnesses are essential hardware for electronic systems in modern automotive vehicles. With a shift in the automotive industry towards electrification and autonomous driving, more and more automotive electronics are responsible for energy transmission and safety-critical functions such as maneuvering, driver assistance, and safety system. This paradigm shift places more demand on automotive wire harnesses from the safety perspective and stresses the greater importance of high-quality wire harness assembly in vehicles. However, most of the current operations of wire harness assembly are still performed manually by skilled workers, and some of the manual processes are problematic in terms of quality control and ergonomics. There is also a persistent demand in the industry to increase competitiveness and gain market share. Hence, assuring assembly quality while improving ergonomics and optimizing labor costs is desired. Robotized assembly, accomplished by robots or in human-robot collaboration, is a key enabler for fulfilling the increasingly demanding quality and safety as it enables more replicable, transparent, and comprehensible processes than completely manual operations. However, robotized assembly of wire harnesses is challenging in practical environments due to the flexibility of the deformable objects, though many preliminary automation solutions have been proposed under simplified industrial configurations. Previous research efforts have proposed the use of computer vision technology to facilitate robotized automation of wire harness assembly, enabling the robots to better perceive and manipulate the flexible wire harness. This article presents an overview of computer vision technology proposed for robotized wire harness assembly and derives research gaps that require further study to facilitate a more practical robotized assembly of wire harnesses.
Neural network pruning offers an effective method for compressing a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) model with minimal performance loss. However, it entails several rounds of pruning and re-training needed to be run for each language. In this work, we propose the use of an adaptive masking approach in two scenarios for pruning a multilingual ASR model efficiently, each resulting in sparse monolingual models or a sparse multilingual model (named as Dynamic ASR Pathways). Our approach dynamically adapts the sub-network, avoiding premature decisions about a fixed sub-network structure. We show that our approach outperforms existing pruning methods when targeting sparse monolingual models. Further, we illustrate that Dynamic ASR Pathways jointly discovers and trains better sub-networks (pathways) of a single multilingual model by adapting from different sub-network initializations, thereby reducing the need for language-specific pruning.
Face recognition technology has advanced significantly in recent years due largely to the availability of large and increasingly complex training datasets for use in deep learning models. These datasets, however, typically comprise images scraped from news sites or social media platforms and, therefore, have limited utility in more advanced security, forensics, and military applications. These applications require lower resolution, longer ranges, and elevated viewpoints. To meet these critical needs, we collected and curated the first and second subsets of a large multi-modal biometric dataset designed for use in the research and development (R&D) of biometric recognition technologies under extremely challenging conditions. Thus far, the dataset includes more than 350,000 still images and over 1,300 hours of video footage of approximately 1,000 subjects. To collect this data, we used Nikon DSLR cameras, a variety of commercial surveillance cameras, specialized long-rage R&D cameras, and Group 1 and Group 2 UAV platforms. The goal is to support the development of algorithms capable of accurately recognizing people at ranges up to 1,000 m and from high angles of elevation. These advances will include improvements to the state of the art in face recognition and will support new research in the area of whole-body recognition using methods based on gait and anthropometry. This paper describes methods used to collect and curate the dataset, and the dataset's characteristics at the current stage.
In pace with developments in the research field of artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted a surge of interest from both academia and industry. As a representation of semantic relations between entities, KGs have proven to be particularly relevant for natural language processing (NLP), experiencing a rapid spread and wide adoption within recent years. Given the increasing amount of research work in this area, several KG-related approaches have been surveyed in the NLP research community. However, a comprehensive study that categorizes established topics and reviews the maturity of individual research streams remains absent to this day. Contributing to closing this gap, we systematically analyzed 507 papers from the literature on KGs in NLP. Our survey encompasses a multifaceted review of tasks, research types, and contributions. As a result, we present a structured overview of the research landscape, provide a taxonomy of tasks, summarize our findings, and highlight directions for future work.
With the extremely rapid advances in remote sensing (RS) technology, a great quantity of Earth observation (EO) data featuring considerable and complicated heterogeneity is readily available nowadays, which renders researchers an opportunity to tackle current geoscience applications in a fresh way. With the joint utilization of EO data, much research on multimodal RS data fusion has made tremendous progress in recent years, yet these developed traditional algorithms inevitably meet the performance bottleneck due to the lack of the ability to comprehensively analyse and interpret these strongly heterogeneous data. Hence, this non-negligible limitation further arouses an intense demand for an alternative tool with powerful processing competence. Deep learning (DL), as a cutting-edge technology, has witnessed remarkable breakthroughs in numerous computer vision tasks owing to its impressive ability in data representation and reconstruction. Naturally, it has been successfully applied to the field of multimodal RS data fusion, yielding great improvement compared with traditional methods. This survey aims to present a systematic overview in DL-based multimodal RS data fusion. More specifically, some essential knowledge about this topic is first given. Subsequently, a literature survey is conducted to analyse the trends of this field. Some prevalent sub-fields in the multimodal RS data fusion are then reviewed in terms of the to-be-fused data modalities, i.e., spatiospectral, spatiotemporal, light detection and ranging-optical, synthetic aperture radar-optical, and RS-Geospatial Big Data fusion. Furthermore, We collect and summarize some valuable resources for the sake of the development in multimodal RS data fusion. Finally, the remaining challenges and potential future directions are highlighted.
Vision-based vehicle detection approaches achieve incredible success in recent years with the development of deep convolutional neural network (CNN). However, existing CNN based algorithms suffer from the problem that the convolutional features are scale-sensitive in object detection task but it is common that traffic images and videos contain vehicles with a large variance of scales. In this paper, we delve into the source of scale sensitivity, and reveal two key issues: 1) existing RoI pooling destroys the structure of small scale objects, 2) the large intra-class distance for a large variance of scales exceeds the representation capability of a single network. Based on these findings, we present a scale-insensitive convolutional neural network (SINet) for fast detecting vehicles with a large variance of scales. First, we present a context-aware RoI pooling to maintain the contextual information and original structure of small scale objects. Second, we present a multi-branch decision network to minimize the intra-class distance of features. These lightweight techniques bring zero extra time complexity but prominent detection accuracy improvement. The proposed techniques can be equipped with any deep network architectures and keep them trained end-to-end. Our SINet achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of accuracy and speed (up to 37 FPS) on the KITTI benchmark and a new highway dataset, which contains a large variance of scales and extremely small objects.
