This paper presents an in-depth study of multimodal machine translation (MMT), examining the prevailing understanding that MMT systems exhibit decreased sensitivity to visual information when text inputs are complete. Instead, we attribute this phenomenon to insufficient cross-modal interaction, rather than image information redundancy. A novel approach is proposed to generate parallel Visual Question-Answering (VQA) style pairs from the source text, fostering more robust cross-modal interaction. Using Large Language Models (LLMs), we explicitly model the probing signal in MMT to convert it into VQA-style data to create the Multi30K-VQA dataset. An MMT-VQA multitask learning framework is introduced to incorporate explicit probing signals from the dataset into the MMT training process. Experimental results on two widely-used benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel approach. Our code and data would be available at: \url{//github.com/libeineu/MMT-VQA}.

In this paper, a novel tool prototype for harvesting table-top grown strawberries is presented. With robustness against strawberry localization error of 15mm and average cycle time of 8.02 seconds at 50% of maximum operational velocity, it provides a promising contribution towards full automation of strawberry harvesting. In addition, the tool has an overall fruit-interacting width of 35mm that greatly enhances reach-ability due to the minimal footprint. A complete harvesting system is also proposed that can be readily mounted to a mobile platform for field tests. An experimental demonstration is performed to showcase the new methodology and derive relevant metrics.

This study proposes a novel method for developing discretization-consistent closure schemes for implicitly filtered Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Here, the induced filter kernel, and thus the closure terms, are determined by the properties of the grid and the discretization operator, leading to additional computational subgrid terms that are generally unknown in a priori analysis. In this work, the task of adapting the coefficients of LES closure models is thus framed as a Markov decision process and solved in an a posteriori manner with Reinforcement Learning (RL). This optimization framework is applied to both explicit and implicit closure models. The explicit model is based on an element-local eddy viscosity model. The optimized model is found to adapt its induced viscosity within discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods to homogenize the dissipation within an element by adding more viscosity near its center. For the implicit modeling, RL is applied to identify an optimal blending strategy for a hybrid DG and Finite Volume (FV) scheme. The resulting optimized discretization yields more accurate results in LES than either the pure DG or FV method and renders itself as a viable modeling ansatz that could initiate a novel class of high-order schemes for compressible turbulence by combining turbulence modeling with shock capturing in a single framework. All newly derived models achieve accurate results that either match or outperform traditional models for different discretizations and resolutions. Overall, the results demonstrate that the proposed RL optimization can provide discretization-consistent closures that could reduce the uncertainty in implicitly filtered LES.

This paper proposes a novel design on the wireless powered communication network (WPCN) in dynamic environments under the assistance of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Unlike the existing studies, where the low-power wireless nodes (WNs) often conform to the coherent harvest-then-transmit protocol, under our newly proposed double-threshold based WN type updating rule, each WN can dynamically and repeatedly update its WN type as an E-node for non-linear energy harvesting over time slots or an I-node for transmitting data over sub-slots. To maximize the total transmission data size of all the WNs over T slots, each of the UAVs individually determines its trajectory and binary wireless energy transmission (WET) decisions over times slots and its binary wireless data collection (WDC) decisions over sub-slots, under the constraints of each UAV's limited on-board energy and each WN's node type updating rule. However, due to the UAVs' tightly-coupled trajectories with their WET and WDC decisions, as well as each WN's time-varying battery energy, this problem is difficult to solve optimally. We then propose a new multi-agent based hierarchical deep reinforcement learning (MAHDRL) framework with two tiers to solve the problem efficiently, where the soft actor critic (SAC) policy is designed in tier-1 to determine each UAV's continuous trajectory and binary WET decision over time slots, and the deep-Q learning (DQN) policy is designed in tier-2 to determine each UAV's binary WDC decisions over sub-slots under the given UAV trajectory from tier-1. Both of the SAC policy and the DQN policy are executed distributively at each UAV. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to validate the outweighed performance of the proposed MAHDRL approach over various state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Weakly supervised 3D object detection aims to learn a 3D detector with lower annotation cost, e.g., 2D labels. Unlike prior work which still relies on few accurate 3D annotations, we propose a framework to study how to leverage constraints between 2D and 3D domains without requiring any 3D labels. Specifically, we employ visual data from three perspectives to establish connections between 2D and 3D domains. First, we design a feature-level constraint to align LiDAR and image features based on object-aware regions. Second, the output-level constraint is developed to enforce the overlap between 2D and projected 3D box estimations. Finally, the training-level constraint is utilized by producing accurate and consistent 3D pseudo-labels that align with the visual data. We conduct extensive experiments on the KITTI dataset to validate the effectiveness of the proposed three constraints. Without using any 3D labels, our method achieves favorable performance against state-of-the-art approaches and is competitive with the method that uses 500-frame 3D annotations. Ising machines have emerged as a promising solution for rapidly solving NP-complete combinatorial optimization problems, surpassing the capabilities of traditional computing methods. By efficiently determining the ground state of the Hamiltonian during the annealing process, Ising machines can effectively complement CPUs in tackling optimization challenges. To realize these Ising machines, a bi-stable oscillator is essential to emulate the atomic spins and interactions of the Ising model. This study introduces a Josephson parametric oscillator (JPO)-based tile structure, serving as a fundamental unit for scalable superconductor-based Ising machines. Leveraging the bi-stable nature of JPOs, which are superconductor-based oscillators, the proposed machine can operate at frequencies of 7.5GHz while consuming significantly less power (by three orders of magnitude) than CMOS-based systems. Furthermore, the compatibility of the proposed tile structure with the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) architecture ensures its viability for large-scale integration. We conducted simulations of the tile in a noisy environment to validate its functionality. We verified its operational characteristics by comparing the results with the analytical solution of its Hamiltonian model. This verification demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the JPO-based tile in implementing Ising machines, opening new avenues for efficient and scalable combinatorial optimization in quantum computing.

While the pseudo-label method has demonstrated considerable success in semi-supervised object detection tasks, this paper uncovers notable limitations within this approach. Specifically, the pseudo-label method tends to amplify the inherent strengths of the detector while accentuating its weaknesses, which is manifested in the missed detection of pseudo-labels, particularly for small and tail category objects. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes Mixed Pseudo Labels (MixPL), consisting of Mixup and Mosaic for pseudo-labeled data, to mitigate the negative impact of missed detections and balance the model's learning across different object scales. Additionally, the model's detection performance on tail categories is improved by resampling labeled data with relevant instances. Notably, MixPL consistently improves the performance of various detectors and obtains new state-of-the-art results with Faster R-CNN, FCOS, and DINO on COCO-Standard and COCO-Full benchmarks. Furthermore, MixPL also exhibits good scalability on large models, improving DINO Swin-L by 2.5% mAP and achieving nontrivial new records (60.2% mAP) on the COCO val2017 benchmark without extra annotations.

This paper introduces a structured, adaptive-length deep representation called Neural Eigenmap. Unlike prior spectral methods such as Laplacian Eigenmap that operate in a nonparametric manner, Neural Eigenmap leverages NeuralEF to parametrically model eigenfunctions using a neural network. We show that, when the eigenfunction is derived from positive relations in a data augmentation setup, applying NeuralEF results in an objective function that resembles those of popular self-supervised learning methods, with an additional symmetry-breaking property that leads to \emph{structured} representations where features are ordered by importance. We demonstrate using such representations as adaptive-length codes in image retrieval systems. By truncation according to feature importance, our method requires up to $16\times$ shorter representation length than leading self-supervised learning ones to achieve similar retrieval performance. We further apply our method to graph data and report strong results on a node representation learning benchmark with more than one million nodes.

This paper presents a Gaussian Process (GP) framework, a non-parametric technique widely acknowledged for regression and classification tasks, to address inverse problems in mean field games (MFGs). By leveraging GPs, we aim to recover agents' strategic actions and the environment's configurations from partial and noisy observations of the population of agents and the setup of the environment. Our method is a probabilistic tool to infer the behaviors of agents in MFGs from data in scenarios where the comprehensive dataset is either inaccessible or contaminated by noises.

This paper surveys research works in the quickly advancing field of instruction tuning (IT), a crucial technique to enhance the capabilities and controllability of large language models (LLMs). Instruction tuning refers to the process of further training LLMs on a dataset consisting of \textsc{(instruction, output)} pairs in a supervised fashion, which bridges the gap between the next-word prediction objective of LLMs and the users' objective of having LLMs adhere to human instructions. In this work, we make a systematic review of the literature, including the general methodology of IT, the construction of IT datasets, the training of IT models, and applications to different modalities, domains and applications, along with an analysis on aspects that influence the outcome of IT (e.g., generation of instruction outputs, size of the instruction dataset, etc). We also review the potential pitfalls of IT along with criticism against it, along with efforts pointing out current deficiencies of existing strategies and suggest some avenues for fruitful research.

In this paper, we proposed to apply meta learning approach for low-resource automatic speech recognition (ASR). We formulated ASR for different languages as different tasks, and meta-learned the initialization parameters from many pretraining languages to achieve fast adaptation on unseen target language, via recently proposed model-agnostic meta learning algorithm (MAML). We evaluated the proposed approach using six languages as pretraining tasks and four languages as target tasks. Preliminary results showed that the proposed method, MetaASR, significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art multitask pretraining approach on all target languages with different combinations of pretraining languages. In addition, since MAML's model-agnostic property, this paper also opens new research direction of applying meta learning to more speech-related applications.
