Autonomous robots navigating in changing environments demand adaptive navigation strategies for safe long-term operation. While many modern control paradigms offer theoretical guarantees, they often assume known extrinsic safety constraints, overlooking challenges when deployed in real-world environments where objects can appear, disappear, and shift over time. In this paper, we present a closed-loop perception-action pipeline that bridges this gap. Our system encodes an online-constructed dense map, along with object-level semantic and consistency estimates into a control barrier function (CBF) to regulate safe regions in the scene. A model predictive controller (MPC) leverages the CBF-based safety constraints to adapt its navigation behaviour, which is particularly crucial when potential scene changes occur. We test the system in simulations and real-world experiments to demonstrate the impact of semantic information and scene change handling on robot behavior, validating the practicality of our approach.
Despite its benefits for tumour detection and treatment, the administration of contrast agents in dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) is associated with a range of issues, including their invasiveness, bioaccumulation, and a risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. This study explores the feasibility of producing synthetic contrast enhancements by translating pre-contrast T1-weighted fat-saturated breast MRI to their corresponding first DCE-MRI sequence leveraging the capabilities of a generative adversarial network (GAN). Additionally, we introduce a Scaled Aggregate Measure (SAMe) designed for quantitatively evaluating the quality of synthetic data in a principled manner and serving as a basis for selecting the optimal generative model. We assess the generated DCE-MRI data using quantitative image quality metrics and apply them to the downstream task of 3D breast tumour segmentation. Our results highlight the potential of post-contrast DCE-MRI synthesis in enhancing the robustness of breast tumour segmentation models via data augmentation. Ensuring the safe operation of legged robots in uncertain, novel environments is crucial to their widespread adoption. Despite recent advances in safety filters that can keep arbitrary task-driven policies from incurring safety failures, existing solutions for legged robot locomotion still rely on simplified dynamics and may fail when the robot is perturbed away from predefined stable gaits. This paper presents a general approach that leverages offline game-theoretic reinforcement learning to synthesize a highly robust safety filter for high-order nonlinear dynamics. This gameplay filter then maintains runtime safety by continually simulating adversarial futures and precluding task-driven actions that would cause it to lose future games (and thereby violate safety). Validated on a 36-dimensional quadruped robot locomotion task, the gameplay safety filter exhibits inherent robustness to the sim-to-real gap without manual tuning or heuristic designs. Physical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the gameplay safety filter under perturbations, such as tugging and unmodeled irregular terrains, while simulation studies shed light on how to trade off computation and conservativeness without compromising safety.
An exciting and promising frontier for Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is its application to real-world robotic systems. While modern DRL approaches achieved remarkable successes in many robotic scenarios (including mobile robotics, surgical assistance, and autonomous driving) unpredictable and non-stationary environments can pose critical challenges to such methods. These features can significantly undermine fundamental requirements for a successful training process, such as the Markovian properties of the transition model. To address this challenge, we propose a new benchmarking environment for aquatic navigation using recent advances in the integration between game engines and DRL. In more detail, we show that our benchmarking environment is problematic even for state-of-the-art DRL approaches that may struggle to generate reliable policies in terms of generalization power and safety. Specifically, we focus on PPO, one of the most widely accepted algorithms, and we propose advanced training techniques (such as curriculum learning and learnable hyperparameters). Our extensive empirical evaluation shows that a well-designed combination of these ingredients can achieve promising results. Our simulation environment and training baselines are freely available to facilitate further research on this open problem and encourage collaboration in the field.
Current methods to prevent crypto asset fraud are based on the analysis of transaction graphs within blockchain networks. While effective for identifying transaction patterns indicative of fraud, it does not capture the semantics of transactions and is constrained to blockchain data. Consequently, preventive methods based on transaction graphs are inherently limited. In response to these limitations, we propose the Kosmosis approach, which aims to incrementally construct a knowledge graph as new blockchain and social media data become available. During construction, it aims to extract the semantics of transactions and connect blockchain addresses to their real-world entities by fusing blockchain and social media data in a knowledge graph. This enables novel preventive methods against rug pulls as a form of crypto asset fraud. To demonstrate the effectiveness and practical applicability of the Kosmosis approach, we examine a series of real-world rug pulls from 2021. Through this case, we illustrate how Kosmosis can aid in identifying and preventing such fraudulent activities by leveraging the insights from the constructed knowledge graph.
We propose a novel performance metric for articulated robots with distributed directional sensors called the sensor observability analysis (SOA). These robot-mounted distributed directional sensors (e.g., joint torque sensors) change their individual sensing directions as the joints move. SOA transforms individual sensors axes in joint space to provide the cumulative sensing quality of these sensors to observe each task-space axis, akin to forward kinematics for sensors. For example, certain joint configurations may align joint torque sensors in such a way that they are unable to observe interaction forces in one or more task-space axes. The resultant sensor observability performance metrics can then be used in optimization and in null-space control to avoid sensor observability singular configurations or to maximize sensor observability in particular directions. We use the specific case of force sensing in serial robot manipulators to showcase the analysis. Parallels are drawn between sensor observability and the traditional kinematic manipulability; SOA is shown to be more generalizable in terms of analysing non-joint-mounted sensors and can potentially be applied to sensor types other than for force sensing. Simulations and experiments using a custom 3-DOF robot and the Baxter robot demonstrate the utility and importance of sensor observability in physical interactions.
Traditional approaches to human-robot interaction design typically examine robot behaviors in controlled environments and narrow tasks. These methods are impractical for designing robots that interact with diverse user groups in complex human environments. Drawing from the field of theater, we present the construct of scenes -- individual environments consisting of specific people, objects, spatial arrangements, and social norms -- and tangible scenography, as a holistic design approach for human-robot interactions. We created a design tool, Tangible Scenography Kit (TaSK), with physical props to aid in design brainstorming. We conducted design sessions with eight professional designers to generate exploratory designs. Designers used tangible scenography and TaSK components to create multiple scenes with specific interaction goals, characterize each scene's social environment, and design scene-specific robot behaviors. From these sessions, we found that this method can encourage designers to think beyond a robot's narrow capabilities and consider how they can facilitate complex social interactions.
The application of artificial intelligence to simulate air-to-air combat scenarios is attracting increasing attention. To date the high-dimensional state and action spaces, the high complexity of situation information (such as imperfect and filtered information, stochasticity, incomplete knowledge about mission targets) and the nonlinear flight dynamics pose significant challenges for accurate air combat decision-making. These challenges are exacerbated when multiple heterogeneous agents are involved. We propose a hierarchical multi-agent reinforcement learning framework for air-to-air combat with multiple heterogeneous agents. In our framework, the decision-making process is divided into two stages of abstraction, where heterogeneous low-level policies control the action of individual units, and a high-level commander policy issues macro commands given the overall mission targets. Low-level policies are trained for accurate unit combat control. Their training is organized in a learning curriculum with increasingly complex training scenarios and league-based self-play. The commander policy is trained on mission targets given pre-trained low-level policies. The empirical validation advocates the advantages of our design choices.
This survey paper specially analyzed computer vision-based object detection challenges and solutions by different techniques. We mainly highlighted object detection by three different trending strategies, i.e., 1) domain adaptive deep learning-based approaches (discrepancy-based, Adversarial-based, Reconstruction-based, Hybrid). We examined general as well as tiny object detection-related challenges and offered solutions by historical and comparative analysis. In part 2) we mainly focused on tiny object detection techniques (multi-scale feature learning, Data augmentation, Training strategy (TS), Context-based detection, GAN-based detection). In part 3), To obtain knowledge-able findings, we discussed different object detection methods, i.e., convolutions and convolutional neural networks (CNN), pooling operations with trending types. Furthermore, we explained results with the help of some object detection algorithms, i.e., R-CNN, Fast R-CNN, Faster R-CNN, YOLO, and SSD, which are generally considered the base bone of CV, CNN, and OD. We performed comparative analysis on different datasets such as MS-COCO, PASCAL VOC07,12, and ImageNet to analyze results and present findings. At the end, we showed future directions with existing challenges of the field. In the future, OD methods and models can be analyzed for real-time object detection, tracking strategies.
Many real-world applications require the prediction of long sequence time-series, such as electricity consumption planning. Long sequence time-series forecasting (LSTF) demands a high prediction capacity of the model, which is the ability to capture precise long-range dependency coupling between output and input efficiently. Recent studies have shown the potential of Transformer to increase the prediction capacity. However, there are several severe issues with Transformer that prevent it from being directly applicable to LSTF, such as quadratic time complexity, high memory usage, and inherent limitation of the encoder-decoder architecture. To address these issues, we design an efficient transformer-based model for LSTF, named Informer, with three distinctive characteristics: (i) a $ProbSparse$ Self-attention mechanism, which achieves $O(L \log L)$ in time complexity and memory usage, and has comparable performance on sequences' dependency alignment. (ii) the self-attention distilling highlights dominating attention by halving cascading layer input, and efficiently handles extreme long input sequences. (iii) the generative style decoder, while conceptually simple, predicts the long time-series sequences at one forward operation rather than a step-by-step way, which drastically improves the inference speed of long-sequence predictions. Extensive experiments on four large-scale datasets demonstrate that Informer significantly outperforms existing methods and provides a new solution to the LSTF problem.
Seamlessly interacting with humans or robots is hard because these agents are non-stationary. They update their policy in response to the ego agent's behavior, and the ego agent must anticipate these changes to co-adapt. Inspired by humans, we recognize that robots do not need to explicitly model every low-level action another agent will make; instead, we can capture the latent strategy of other agents through high-level representations. We propose a reinforcement learning-based framework for learning latent representations of an agent's policy, where the ego agent identifies the relationship between its behavior and the other agent's future strategy. The ego agent then leverages these latent dynamics to influence the other agent, purposely guiding them towards policies suitable for co-adaptation. Across several simulated domains and a real-world air hockey game, our approach outperforms the alternatives and learns to influence the other agent.
