This paper assesses the equity impacts of for-hire autonomous vehicles (AVs) and investigates regulatory policies that promote spatial and social equity in future autonomous mobility ecosystems. To this end, we consider a multimodal transportation network, where a ride-hailing platform operates a fleet of AVs to offer mobility-on-demand services in competition with a public transit agency that offers transit services on a transportation network. A game-theoretic model is developed to characterize the intimate interactions between the ride-hailing platform, the transit agency, and multiclass passengers with distinct income levels. An algorithm is proposed to compute the Nash equilibrium of the game and conduct an ex-post evaluation of the performance of the obtained solution. Based on the proposed framework, we evaluate the spatial and social equity in transport accessibility using the Theil index, and find that although the proliferation of for-hire AVs in the ride-hailing network improves overall accessibility, the benefits are not fairly distributed among distinct locations or population groups, implying that the deployment of AVs will enlarge the existing spatial and social inequity gaps in the transportation network if no regulatory intervention is in place. To address this concern, we investigate two regulatory policies that can improve transport equity: (a) a minimum service-level requirement on ride-hailing services, which improves the spatial equity in the transport network; (b) a subsidy on transit services by taxing ride-hailing services, which promotes the use of public transit and improves the spatial and social equity of the transport network. Numerical solution of discrete PDEs corresponding to saddle point problems is highly relevant to physical systems such as Stokes flow. However, scaling up numerical solvers for such systems is often met with challenges in efficiency and convergence. Multigrid is an approach with excellent applicability to elliptic problems such as the Stokes equations, and can be a solution to such challenges of scalability and efficiency. The degree of success of such methods, however, is highly contingent on the design of key components of a multigrid scheme, including the hierarchy of discretizations, and the relaxation scheme used. Additionally, in many practical cases, it may be more effective to use a multigrid scheme as a preconditioner to an iterative Krylov subspace solver, as opposed to striving for maximum efficacy of the relaxation scheme in all foreseeable settings. In this paper, we propose an efficient symmetric multigrid preconditioner for the Stokes Equations on a staggered finite-difference discretization. Our contribution is focused on crafting a preconditioner that (a) is symmetric indefinite, matching the property of the Stokes system itself, (b) is appropriate for preconditioning the SQMR iterative scheme, and (c) has the requisite symmetry properties to be used in this context. In addition, our design is efficient in terms of computational cost and facilitates scaling to large domains.

This paper studies the problem of CPRP, concept prerequisite relation prediction, which is a fundamental task in using AI for education. CPRP is usually formulated into a link-prediction task on a relationship graph of concepts and solved by training the graph neural network (GNN) model. However, current directed GNNs fail to manage graph isomorphism which refers to the invariance of non-isomorphic graphs, reducing the expressivity of resulting representations. We present a permutation-equivariant directed GNN model by introducing the Weisfeiler-Lehman test into directed GNN learning. Our method is then used for CPRP and evaluated on three public datasets. The experimental results show that our model delivers better prediction performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper presents a motion planning algorithm for quadruped locomotion based on density functions. We decompose the locomotion problem into a high-level density planner and a model predictive controller (MPC). Due to density functions having a physical interpretation through the notion of occupancy, it is intuitive to represent the environment with safety constraints. Hence, there is an ease of use to constructing the planning problem with density. The proposed method uses a simplified model of the robot into an integrator system, where the high-level plan is in a feedback form formulated through an analytically constructed density function. We then use the MPC to optimize the reference trajectory, in which a low-level PID controller is used to obtain the torque level control. The overall framework is implemented in simulation, demonstrating our feedback density planner for legged locomotion. This paper considers the problem of evaluating an autonomous system's competency in performing a task, particularly when working in dynamic and uncertain environments. The inherent opacity of machine learning models, from the perspective of the user, often described as a `black box', poses a challenge. To overcome this, we propose using a measure called the Surprise index, which leverages available measurement data to quantify whether the dynamic system performs as expected. We show that the surprise index can be computed in closed form for dynamic systems when observed evidence in a probabilistic model if the joint distribution for that evidence follows a multivariate Gaussian marginal distribution. We then apply it to a nonlinear spacecraft maneuver problem, where actions are chosen by a reinforcement learning agent and show it can indicate how well the trajectory follows the required orbit.

The prevalence of the powerful multilingual models, such as Whisper, has significantly advanced the researches on speech recognition. However, these models often struggle with handling the code-switching setting, which is essential in multilingual speech recognition. Recent studies have attempted to address this setting by separating the modules for different languages to ensure distinct latent representations for languages. Some other methods considered the switching mechanism based on language identification. In this study, a new attention-guided adaptation is proposed to conduct parameter-efficient learning for bilingual ASR. This method selects those attention heads in a model which closely express language identities and then guided those heads to be correctly attended with their corresponding languages. The experiments on the Mandarin-English code-switching speech corpus show that the proposed approach achieves a 14.2% mixed error rate, surpassing state-of-the-art method, where only 5.6% additional parameters over Whisper are trained.

This paper presents a safety-critical approach to the coordinated control of cooperative robots locomoting in the presence of fixed (holonomic) constraints. To this end, we leverage control barrier functions (CBFs) to ensure the safe cooperation of the robots while maintaining a desired formation and avoiding obstacles. The top-level planner generates a set of feasible trajectories, accounting for both kinematic constraints between the robots and physical constraints of the environment. This planner leverages CBFs to ensure safety-critical coordination control, i.e., guarantee safety of the collaborative robots during locomotion. The middle-level trajectory planner incorporates interconnected single rigid body (SRB) dynamics to generate optimal ground reaction forces (GRFs) to track the safety-ensured trajectories from the top-level planner while addressing the interconnection dynamics between agents. Distributed low-level controllers generate whole-body motion to follow the prescribed optimal GRFs while ensuring the friction cone condition at each end of the stance legs. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated through numerical simulations and experimentally on a pair of quadrupedal robots.

This paper presents a novel conflict resolution strategy for autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) to safely navigate and avoid collisions in a multi-vessel environment at sea. Collisions between two or more marine vessels must be avoided by following the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). We propose strategy a two-phase strategy called as COLREGs Compliant Conflict-Resolving (COMCORE) strategy, that generates collision-free trajectories for ASVs while complying with COLREGs. In phase-1, a shortest path for each agent is determined, while in phase-2 conflicts are detected and resolved by modifying the path in compliance with COLREGs. COMCORE solution optimises vessel trajectories for lower costs while also providing a safe and collision-free plan for each vessel. Simulation results are presented to show the applicability of COMCORE for larger number agents with very low computational requirement and hence scalable. Further, we experimentally demonstrate COMCORE for two ASVs in a lake to show its ability to determine solution and implementation capability in the real-world.

The protection of sensitive data becomes more vital, as data increases in value and potency. Furthermore, the pressure increases from regulators and society on model developers to make their Artificial Intelligence (AI) models non-discriminatory. To boot, there is a need for interpretable, transparent AI models for high-stakes tasks. In general, measuring the fairness of any AI model requires the sensitive attributes of the individuals in the dataset, thus raising privacy concerns. In this work, the trade-offs between fairness, privacy and interpretability are further explored. We specifically examine the Statistical Parity (SP) of Decision Trees (DTs) with Differential Privacy (DP), that are each popular methods in their respective subfield. We propose a novel method, dubbed Privacy-Aware Fairness Estimation of Rules (PAFER), that can estimate SP in a DP-aware manner for DTs. DP, making use of a third-party legal entity that securely holds this sensitive data, guarantees privacy by adding noise to the sensitive data. We experimentally compare several DP mechanisms. We show that using the Laplacian mechanism, the method is able to estimate SP with low error while guaranteeing the privacy of the individuals in the dataset with high certainty. We further show experimentally and theoretically that the method performs better for DTs that humans generally find easier to interpret.

Collaborative filtering often suffers from sparsity and cold start problems in real recommendation scenarios, therefore, researchers and engineers usually use side information to address the issues and improve the performance of recommender systems. In this paper, we consider knowledge graphs as the source of side information. We propose MKR, a Multi-task feature learning approach for Knowledge graph enhanced Recommendation. MKR is a deep end-to-end framework that utilizes knowledge graph embedding task to assist recommendation task. The two tasks are associated by cross&compress units, which automatically share latent features and learn high-order interactions between items in recommender systems and entities in the knowledge graph. We prove that cross&compress units have sufficient capability of polynomial approximation, and show that MKR is a generalized framework over several representative methods of recommender systems and multi-task learning. Through extensive experiments on real-world datasets, we demonstrate that MKR achieves substantial gains in movie, book, music, and news recommendation, over state-of-the-art baselines. MKR is also shown to be able to maintain a decent performance even if user-item interactions are sparse.

Multi-relation Question Answering is a challenging task, due to the requirement of elaborated analysis on questions and reasoning over multiple fact triples in knowledge base. In this paper, we present a novel model called Interpretable Reasoning Network that employs an interpretable, hop-by-hop reasoning process for question answering. The model dynamically decides which part of an input question should be analyzed at each hop; predicts a relation that corresponds to the current parsed results; utilizes the predicted relation to update the question representation and the state of the reasoning process; and then drives the next-hop reasoning. Experiments show that our model yields state-of-the-art results on two datasets. More interestingly, the model can offer traceable and observable intermediate predictions for reasoning analysis and failure diagnosis.
