In this paper, we are interested in some problems related to chromatic number and clique number for the class of $(P_5,K_5-e)$-free graphs, and prove the following. $(a)$ If $G$ is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 7$, then either $G$ is the complement of a bipartite graph or $G$ has a clique cut-set. Moreover, there is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free imperfect graph $H$ with $\omega(H)=6$ and has no clique cut-set. This strengthens a result of Malyshev and Lobanova [Disc. Appl. Math. 219 (2017) 158--166]. $(b)$ If $G$ is a ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 4$, then $\chi(G)\leq \max\{7, \omega(G)\}$. Moreover, the bound is tight when $\omega(G)\notin \{4,5,6\}$. This result together with known results partially answers a question of Ju and Huang [arXiv:2303.18003 [math.CO] 2023], and also improves a result of Xu [Manuscript 2022]. While the "Chromatic Number Problem" is known to be $NP$-hard for the class of $P_5$-free graphs, our results together with some known results imply that the "Chromatic Number Problem" can be solved in polynomial time for the class of ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graphs which may be independent interest.
The dichromatic number $\vec{\chi}(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the least integer $k$ for which $D$ has a coloring with $k$ colors such that there is no monochromatic directed cycle in $D$. The digraphs considered here are finite and may have antiparallel arcs, but no parallel arcs. A digraph $D$ is called $k$-critical if each proper subdigraph $D'$ of $D$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(D')<\vec{\chi}(D)=k$. For integers $k$ and $n$, let $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{ext}}(k,n)$ denote the minimum number of arcs possible in a $k$-critical digraph of order $n$. It is easy to show that $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{ext}}(2,n)=n$ for all $n\geq 2$, and $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{ext}}(3,n)\geq 2n$ for all possible $n$, where equality holds if and only if $n$ is odd and $n\geq 3$. As a main result we prove that if $n, k$ and $p$ are integers with $n=k+p$ and $2\leq p \leq k-1$, then $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{ext}}(k,n)=2({\binom{n}{2}} - (p^2+1))$, and we give an exact characterisation of $k$-critical digraphs for which equality holds. This generalizes a result about critical graphs obtained in 1963 by Tibor Gallai.
We solve the $r$-star covering problem in simple orthogonal polygons, also known as the point guard problem in simple orthogonal polygons with rectangular vision, in quadratic time.
Based on the theory of homogeneous spaces we derive \textit{geometrically optimal edge attributes} to be used within the flexible message passing framework. We formalize the notion of weight sharing in convolutional networks as the sharing of message functions over point-pairs that should be treated equally. We define equivalence classes of point-pairs that are identical up to a transformation in the group and derive attributes that uniquely identify these classes. Weight sharing is then obtained by conditioning message functions on these attributes. As an application of the theory, we develop an efficient equivariant group convolutional network for processing 3D point clouds. The theory of homogeneous spaces tells us how to do group convolutions with feature maps over the homogeneous space of positions $\mathbb{R}^3$, position and orientations $\mathbb{R}^3 {\times} S^2$, and the group SE$(3)$ itself. Among these, $\mathbb{R}^3 {\times} S^2$ is an optimal choice due to the ability to represent directional information, which $\mathbb{R}^3$ methods cannot, and it significantly enhances computational efficiency compared to indexing features on the full SE$(3)$ group. We empirically support this claim by reaching state-of-the-art results -- in accuracy and speed -- on three different benchmarks: interatomic potential energy prediction, trajectory forecasting in N-body systems, and generating molecules via equivariant diffusion models.
We study the distributions of waiting times in variations of the negative binomial distribution of order $k$. One variation apply different enumeration scheme on the runs of successes. Another case considers binary trials for which the probability of ones is geometrically varying. We investigate the exact distribution of the waiting time for the $r$-th occurrence of success run of a specified length (non-overlapping, overlapping, at least, exactly, $\ell$-overlapping) in a $q$-sequence of binary trials. The main theorems are Type $1$, $2$, $3$ and $4$ $q$-negative binomial distribution of order $k$ and $q$-negative binomial distribution of order $k$ in the $\ell$-overlapping case. In the present work, we consider a sequence of independent binary zero and one trials with not necessarily identical distribution with the probability of ones varying according to a geometric rule. Exact formulae for the distributions obtained by means of enumerative combinatorics.
Given a sample of size $N$, it is often useful to select a subsample of smaller size $n<N$ to be used for statistical estimation or learning. Such a data selection step is useful to reduce the requirements of data labeling and the computational complexity of learning. We assume to be given $N$ unlabeled samples $\{{\boldsymbol x}_i\}_{i\le N}$, and to be given access to a `surrogate model' that can predict labels $y_i$ better than random guessing. Our goal is to select a subset of the samples, to be denoted by $\{{\boldsymbol x}_i\}_{i\in G}$, of size $|G|=n<N$. We then acquire labels for this set and we use them to train a model via regularized empirical risk minimization. By using a mixture of numerical experiments on real and synthetic data, and mathematical derivations under low- and high- dimensional asymptotics, we show that: $(i)$~Data selection can be very effective, in particular beating training on the full sample in some cases; $(ii)$~Certain popular choices in data selection methods (e.g. unbiased reweighted subsampling, or influence function-based subsampling) can be substantially suboptimal.
Suppose we are given a set $\cal B$ of blue points and a set $\cal R$ of red points, all lying above a horizontal line $\ell$, in the plane. Let the weight of a given point $p_i\in {\cal B}\cup{\cal R}$ be $w_i>0$ if $p_i\in {\cal B}$ and $w_i<0$ if $p_i\in {\cal R}$, $|{\cal B}\cup{\cal R}|=n$, and $d^0$($=d\setminus\partial d$) be the interior of any geometric object $d$. We wish to pack $k$ non-overlapping congruent disks $d_1$, $d_2$, \ldots, $d_k$ of minimum radius, centered on $\ell$ such that $\sum\limits_{j=1}^k\sum\limits_{\{i:\exists p_i\in{\cal R}, p_i\in d_j^0\}}w_i+\sum\limits_{j=1}^k\sum\limits_{\{i:\exists p_i\in{\cal B}, p_i\in d_j\}}w_i$ is maximized, i.e., the sum of the weights of the points covered by $\bigcup\limits_{j=1}^kd_j$ is maximized. Here, the disks are the obnoxious or undesirable facilities generating nuisance or damage (with quantity equal to $w_i$) to every demand point (e.g., population center) $p_i\in {\cal R}$ lying in their interior. In contrast, they are the desirable facilities giving service (equal to $w_i$) to every demand point $p_i\in {\cal B}$ covered by them. The line $\ell$ represents a straight highway or railway line. These $k$ semi-obnoxious facilities need to be established on $\ell$ to receive the largest possible overall service for the nearby attractive demand points while causing minimum damage to the nearby repelling demand points. We show that the problem can be solved optimally in $O(n^4k^2)$ time. Subsequently, we improve the running time to $O(n^3k \cdot\max{(\log n, k)})$. The above-weighted variation of locating $k$ semi-obnoxious facilities may generalize the problem that Bereg et al. (2015) studied where $k=1$ i.e., the smallest radius maximum weight circle is to be centered on a line. Furthermore, we addressed two special cases of the problem where points do not have arbitrary weights.
Let $G$ be an undirected graph, and $s,t$ distinguished vertices of $G$. A minimal $s,t$-separator is an inclusion-wise minimal vertex-set whose removal places $s$ and $t$ in distinct connected components. We present an algorithm for listing the minimal $s,t$-separators of a graph, whose cardinality is at most $k$, with FPT-delay, where the parameter depends only on $k$. This problem finds applications in various algorithms parameterized by treewidth, which include query evaluation in relational databases, probabilistic inference, and many more. We also present a simple algorithm that enumerates all of the (not necessarily minimal) $s,t$-separators of a graph in ranked order by size.
In this work, we develop a numerical method to study the error estimates of the $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation with $\alpha \in(0,2)$, whose limit distribution can be characterized by a fully nonlinear integro-differential equation (PIDE). Based on the sequence of independent random variables, we propose a discrete approximation scheme for the fully nonlinear PIDE. With the help of the nonlinear stochastic analysis techniques and numerical analysis tools, we establish the error bounds for the discrete approximation scheme, which in turn provides a general error bound for the robust $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem, including the integrable case $\alpha \in(1,2)$ as well as the non-integrable case $\alpha \in(0,1]$. Finally, we provide some concrete examples to illustrate our main results and derive the precise convergence rates.
We prove that $1-o(1)$ fraction of all $k$-SAT functions on $n$ Boolean variables are unate (i.e., monotone after first negating some variables), for any fixed positive integer $k$ and as $n \to \infty$. This resolves a conjecture by Bollob\'as, Brightwell, and Leader from 2003.
Given a graph $G$ that is modified by a sequence of edge insertions and deletions, we study the Maximum $k$-Edge Coloring problem Having access to $k$ colors, how can we color as many edges of $G$ as possible such that no two adjacent edges share the same color? While this problem is different from simply maintaining a $b$-matching with $b=k$, the two problems are closely related: a maximum $k$-matching always contains a $\frac{k+1}k$-approximate maximum $k$-edge coloring. However, maximum $b$-matching can be solved efficiently in the static setting, whereas the Maximum $k$-Edge Coloring problem is NP-hard and even APX-hard for $k \ge 2$. We present new results on both problems: For $b$-matching, we show a new integrality gap result and for the case where $b$ is a constant, we adapt Wajc's matching sparsification scheme~[STOC20]. Using these as basis, we give three new algorithms for the dynamic Maximum $k$-Edge Coloring problem: Our MatchO algorithm builds on the dynamic $(2+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm of Bhattacharya, Gupta, and Mohan~[ESA17] for $b$-matching and achieves a $(2+\epsilon)\frac{k+1} k$-approximation in $O(poly(\log n, \epsilon^{-1}))$ update time against an oblivious adversary. Our MatchA algorithm builds on the dynamic $8$-approximation algorithm by Bhattacharya, Henzinger, and Italiano~[SODA15] for fractional $b$-matching and achieves a $(8+\epsilon)\frac{3k+3}{3k-1}$-approximation in $O(poly(\log n, \epsilon^{-1}))$ update time against an adaptive adversary. Moreover, our reductions use the dynamic $b$-matching algorithm as a black box, so any future improvement in the approximation ratio for dynamic $b$-matching will automatically translate into a better approximation ratio for our algorithms. Finally, we present a greedy algorithm that runs in $O(\Delta+k)$ update time, while guaranteeing a $2.16$~approximation factor.
