Distributed averaging is among the most relevant cooperative control problems, with applications in sensor and robotic networks, distributed signal processing, data fusion, and load balancing. Consensus and gossip algorithms have been investigated and successfully deployed in multi-agent systems to perform distributed averaging in synchronous and asynchronous settings. This study proposes a heuristic approach to estimate the convergence rate of averaging algorithms in a distributed manner, relying on the computation and propagation of local graph metrics while entailing simple data elaboration and small message passing. The protocol enables nodes to predict the time (or the number of interactions) needed to estimate the global average with the desired accuracy. Consequently, nodes can make informed decisions on their use of measured and estimated data while gaining awareness of the global structure of the network, as well as their role in it. The study presents relevant applications to outliers identification and performance evaluation in switching topologies.

Spiking neural network is a kind of neuromorphic computing that is believed to improve the level of intelligence and provide advantages for quantum computing. In this work, we address this issue by designing an optical spiking neural network and find that it can be used to accelerate the speed of computation, especially on combinatorial optimization problems. Here the spiking neural network is constructed by the antisymmetrically coupled degenerate optical parametric oscillator pulses and dissipative pulses. A nonlinear transfer function is chosen to mitigate amplitude inhomogeneities and destabilize the resulting local minima according to the dynamical behavior of spiking neurons. It is numerically shown that the spiking neural network-coherent Ising machines have excellent performance on combinatorial optimization problems, which is expected to offer new applications for neural computing and optical computing.

Models of complex technological systems inherently contain interactions and dependencies among their input variables that affect their joint influence on the output. Such models are often computationally expensive and few sensitivity analysis methods can effectively process such complexities. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis field as a whole pays limited attention to the nature of interaction effects, whose understanding can prove to be critical for the design of safe and reliable systems. In this paper, we introduce and extensively test a simple binning approach for computing sensitivity indices and demonstrate how complementing it with the smart visualization method, simulation decomposition (SimDec), can permit important insights into the behavior of complex engineering models. The simple binning approach computes first-, second-order effects, and a combined sensitivity index, and is considerably more computationally efficient than Sobol' indices. The totality of the sensitivity analysis framework provides an efficient and intuitive way to analyze the behavior of complex systems containing interactions and dependencies.

Neural network models become increasingly popular as dynamic modeling tools in the control community. They have many appealing features including nonlinear structures, being able to approximate any functions. While most researchers hold optimistic attitudes towards such models, this paper questions the capability of (deep) neural networks for the modeling of dynamic systems using input-output data. For the identification of linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamic systems, two representative neural network models, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Cascade Foward Neural Network (CFNN) are compared to the standard Prediction Error Method (PEM) of system identification. In the comparison, four essential aspects of system identification are considered, then several possible defects and neglected issues of neural network based modeling are pointed out. Detailed simulation studies are performed to verify these defects: for the LTI system, both LSTM and CFNN fail to deliver consistent models even in noise-free cases; and they give worse results than PEM in noisy cases.

We formulate and test a technique to use Emergent Communication (EC) with a pre-trained multilingual model to improve on modern Unsupervised NMT systems, especially for low-resource languages. It has been argued that the current dominant paradigm in NLP of pre-training on text-only corpora will not yield robust natural language understanding systems, and the need for grounded, goal-oriented, and interactive language learning has been high lighted. In our approach, we embed a multilingual model (mBART, Liu et al., 2020) into an EC image-reference game, in which the model is incentivized to use multilingual generations to accomplish a vision-grounded task. The hypothesis is that this will align multiple languages to a shared task space. We present two variants of EC Fine-Tuning (Steinert-Threlkeld et al., 2022), one of which outperforms a backtranslation-only baseline in all four languages investigated, including the low-resource language Nepali.

For augmentation of the square-shaped image data of a convolutional neural network (CNN), we introduce a new method, in which the original images are mapped onto a disk with a conformal mapping, rotated around the center of this disk and mapped under such a M\"obius transformation that preserves the disk, and then mapped back onto their original square shape. This process does not result the loss of information caused by removing areas from near the edges of the original images unlike the typical transformations used in the data augmentation for a CNN. We offer here the formulas of all the mappings needed together with detailed instructions how to write a code for transforming the images. The new method is also tested with simulated data and, according the results, using this method to augment the training data of 10 images into 40 images decreases the amount of the error in the predictions by a CNN for a test set of 160 images in a statistically significant way (p-value=0.0360).

Since its introduction in 2019, the whole end-to-end neural diarization (EEND) line of work has been addressing speaker diarization as a frame-wise multi-label classification problem with permutation-invariant training. Despite EEND showing great promise, a few recent works took a step back and studied the possible combination of (local) supervised EEND diarization with (global) unsupervised clustering. Yet, these hybrid contributions did not question the original multi-label formulation. We propose to switch from multi-label (where any two speakers can be active at the same time) to powerset multi-class classification (where dedicated classes are assigned to pairs of overlapping speakers). Through extensive experiments on 9 different benchmarks, we show that this formulation leads to significantly better performance (mostly on overlapping speech) and robustness to domain mismatch, while eliminating the detection threshold hyperparameter, critical for the multi-label formulation.

Friction drag from a turbulent fluid moving past or inside an object plays a crucial role in domains as diverse as transportation, public utility infrastructure, energy technology, and human health. As a direct measure of the shear-induced friction forces, an accurate prediction of the wall-shear stress can contribute to sustainability, conservation of resources, and carbon neutrality in civil aviation as well as enhanced medical treatment of vascular diseases and cancer. Despite such importance for our modern society, we still lack adequate experimental methods to capture the instantaneous wall-shear stress dynamics. In this contribution, we present a holistic approach that derives velocity and wall-shear stress fields with impressive spatial and temporal resolution from flow measurements using a deep optical flow estimator with physical knowledge. The validity and physical correctness of the derived flow quantities is demonstrated with synthetic and real-world experimental data covering a range of relevant fluid flows.

In this paper, I propose an answer to this issue which consists of identifying the counterfactual distribution of achievement (I mean the distribution of achievement if there was hypothetically no selection) from the observed distribution of achievements. International comparison measures like means, quantiles, and inequality measures have to be computed using that counterfactual distribution which is statistically closer to the observed one for a low proportion of out-of-school children. I identify the quantiles of that latent distribution by readjusting the percentile levels of the observed quantile function of achievement. Because the data on test scores is by nature truncated, I have to rely on auxiliary data to borrow identification power. I finally applied my method to compute selection corrected means using PISA 2018 and PASEC 2019 and I found that ranking/comparisons can change.

In large-scale systems there are fundamental challenges when centralised techniques are used for task allocation. The number of interactions is limited by resource constraints such as on computation, storage, and network communication. We can increase scalability by implementing the system as a distributed task-allocation system, sharing tasks across many agents. However, this also increases the resource cost of communications and synchronisation, and is difficult to scale. In this paper we present four algorithms to solve these problems. The combination of these algorithms enable each agent to improve their task allocation strategy through reinforcement learning, while changing how much they explore the system in response to how optimal they believe their current strategy is, given their past experience. We focus on distributed agent systems where the agents' behaviours are constrained by resource usage limits, limiting agents to local rather than system-wide knowledge. We evaluate these algorithms in a simulated environment where agents are given a task composed of multiple subtasks that must be allocated to other agents with differing capabilities, to then carry out those tasks. We also simulate real-life system effects such as networking instability. Our solution is shown to solve the task allocation problem to 6.7% of the theoretical optimal within the system configurations considered. It provides 5x better performance recovery over no-knowledge retention approaches when system connectivity is impacted, and is tested against systems up to 100 agents with less than a 9% impact on the algorithms' performance.

Recent advances in 3D fully convolutional networks (FCN) have made it feasible to produce dense voxel-wise predictions of volumetric images. In this work, we show that a multi-class 3D FCN trained on manually labeled CT scans of several anatomical structures (ranging from the large organs to thin vessels) can achieve competitive segmentation results, while avoiding the need for handcrafting features or training class-specific models. To this end, we propose a two-stage, coarse-to-fine approach that will first use a 3D FCN to roughly define a candidate region, which will then be used as input to a second 3D FCN. This reduces the number of voxels the second FCN has to classify to ~10% and allows it to focus on more detailed segmentation of the organs and vessels. We utilize training and validation sets consisting of 331 clinical CT images and test our models on a completely unseen data collection acquired at a different hospital that includes 150 CT scans, targeting three anatomical organs (liver, spleen, and pancreas). In challenging organs such as the pancreas, our cascaded approach improves the mean Dice score from 68.5 to 82.2%, achieving the highest reported average score on this dataset. We compare with a 2D FCN method on a separate dataset of 240 CT scans with 18 classes and achieve a significantly higher performance in small organs and vessels. Furthermore, we explore fine-tuning our models to different datasets. Our experiments illustrate the promise and robustness of current 3D FCN based semantic segmentation of medical images, achieving state-of-the-art results.
