The standard quadrotor is one of the most popular and widely used aerial vehicle of recent decades, offering great maneuverability with mechanical simplicity. However, the under-actuation characteristic limits its applications, especially when it comes to generating desired wrench with six degrees of freedom (DOF). Therefore, existing work often compromises between mechanical complexity and the controllable DOF of the aerial system. To take advantage of the mechanical simplicity of a standard quadrotor, we propose a modular aerial system, IdentiQuad, that combines only homogeneous quadrotor-based modules. Each IdentiQuad can be operated alone like a standard quadrotor, but at the same time allows task-specific assembly, increasing the controllable DOF of the system. Each module is interchangeable within its assembly. We also propose a general controller for different configurations of assemblies, capable of tolerating rotor failures and balancing the energy consumption of each module. The functionality and robustness of the system and its controller are validated using physics-based simulations for different assembly configurations.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), specifically quadrotors, have revolutionized various industries with their maneuverability and versatility, but their safe operation in dynamic environments heavily relies on effective collision avoidance techniques. This paper introduces a novel technique for safely navigating a quadrotor along a desired route while avoiding kinematic obstacles. We propose a new constraint formulation that employs control barrier functions (CBFs) and collision cones to ensure that the relative velocity between the quadrotor and the obstacle always avoids a cone of vectors that may lead to a collision. By showing that the proposed constraint is a valid CBF for quadrotors, we are able to leverage its real-time implementation via Quadratic Programs (QPs), called the CBF-QPs. Validation includes PyBullet simulations and hardware experiments on Crazyflie 2.1, demonstrating effectiveness in static and moving obstacle scenarios. Comparative analysis with literature, especially higher order CBF-QPs, highlights the proposed approach's less conservative nature. Deformable objects present several challenges to the field of robotic manipulation. One of the tasks that best encapsulates the difficulties arising due to non-rigid behavior is shape control, which requires driving an object to a desired shape. While shape-servoing methods have been shown successful in contexts with approximately linear behavior, they can fail in tasks with more complex dynamics. We investigate an alternative approach, using offline RL to solve a planar shape control problem of a Deformable Linear Object (DLO). To evaluate the effect of material properties, two DLOs are tested namely a soft rope and an elastic cord. We frame this task as a goal-conditioned offline RL problem, and aim to learn to generalize to unseen goal shapes. Data collection and augmentation procedures are proposed to limit the amount of experimental data which needs to be collected with the real robot. We evaluate the amount of augmentation needed to achieve the best results, and test the effect of regularization through behavior cloning on the TD3+BC algorithm. Finally, we show that the proposed approach is able to outperform a shape-servoing baseline in a curvature inversion experiment.
Quadruped robots demonstrate robust and agile movements in various terrains; however, their navigation autonomy is still insufficient. One of the challenges is that the motion capabilities of the quadruped robot are anisotropic along different directions, which significantly affects the safety of quadruped robot navigation. This paper proposes a navigation framework that takes into account the motion anisotropy of quadruped robots including kinodynamic trajectory generation, nonlinear trajectory optimization, and nonlinear model predictive control. In simulation and real robot tests, we demonstrate that our motion-anisotropy-aware navigation framework could: (1) generate more efficient trajectories and realize more agile quadruped navigation; (2) significantly improve the navigation safety in challenging scenarios. State estimation is a crucial component for the successful implementation of robotic systems, relying on sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, and IMUs. However, in real-world scenarios, the performance of these sensors is degraded by challenging environments, e.g. adverse weather conditions and low-light scenarios. The emerging 4D imaging radar technology is capable of providing robust perception in adverse conditions. Despite its potential, challenges remain for indoor settings where noisy radar data does not present clear geometric features. Moreover, disparities in radar data resolution and field of view (FOV) can lead to inaccurate measurements. While prior research has explored radar-inertial odometry based on Doppler velocity information, challenges remain for the estimation of 3D motion because of the discrepancy in the FOV and resolution of the radar sensor. In this paper, we address Doppler velocity measurement uncertainties. We present a method to optimize body frame velocity while managing Doppler velocity uncertainty. Based on our observations, we propose a dual imaging radar configuration to mitigate the challenge of discrepancy in radar data. To attain high-precision 3D state estimation, we introduce a strategy that seamlessly integrates radar data with a consumer-grade IMU sensor using fixed-lag smoothing optimization. Finally, we evaluate our approach using real-world 3D motion data.
In order to train networks for verified adversarial robustness, it is common to over-approximate the worst-case loss over perturbation regions, resulting in networks that attain verifiability at the expense of standard performance. As shown in recent work, better trade-offs between accuracy and robustness can be obtained by carefully coupling adversarial training with over-approximations. We hypothesize that the expressivity of a loss function, which we formalize as the ability to span a range of trade-offs between lower and upper bounds to the worst-case loss through a single parameter (the over-approximation coefficient), is key to attaining state-of-the-art performance. To support our hypothesis, we show that trivial expressive losses, obtained via convex combinations between adversarial attacks and IBP bounds, yield state-of-the-art results across a variety of settings in spite of their conceptual simplicity. We provide a detailed analysis of the relationship between the over-approximation coefficient and performance profiles across different expressive losses, showing that, while expressivity is essential, better approximations of the worst-case loss are not necessarily linked to superior robustness-accuracy trade-offs.
Semantic Segmentation is one of the most challenging vision tasks, usually requiring large amounts of training data with expensive pixel-level annotations. With the success of foundation models and especially vision-language models, recent works attempt to achieve zero-shot semantic segmentation while requiring either large scale training or additional image/pixel-level annotations. In this work, we build a lightweight module on top of a self-supervised pretrained vision encoder to align patch features with a pre-trained text encoder. Importantly, we generate free annotations for any semantic segmentation dataset using existing foundation models and train our alignment module cost free. We use CLIP to detect objects and SAM to generate high quality object masks. Our approach can bring language-based semantics to any pre-trained vision encoder with minimal training. Our module is lightweight, uses foundation models as a sole source of supervision and shows impressive generalization capability from little training data with no annotation.
To fully leverage the capabilities of mobile manipulation robots, it is imperative that they are able to autonomously execute long-horizon tasks in large unexplored environments. While large language models (LLMs) have shown emergent reasoning skills on arbitrary tasks, existing work primarily concentrates on explored environments, typically focusing on either navigation or manipulation tasks in isolation. In this work, we propose MoMa-LLM, a novel approach that grounds language models within structured representations derived from open-vocabulary scene graphs, dynamically updated as the environment is explored. We tightly interleave these representations with an object-centric action space. The resulting approach is zero-shot, open-vocabulary, and readily extendable to a spectrum of mobile manipulation and household robotic tasks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MoMa-LLM in a novel semantic interactive search task in large realistic indoor environments. In extensive experiments in both simulation and the real world, we show substantially improved search efficiency compared to conventional baselines and state-of-the-art approaches, as well as its applicability to more abstract tasks. Initially considered as low-power units with limited autonomous processing, Edge IoT devices have seen a paradigm shift with the introduction of FPGAs and AI accelerators. This advancement has vastly amplified their computational capabilities, emphasizing the practicality of edge AI. Such progress introduces new challenges of optimizing AI tasks for the limitations of energy and network resources typical in Edge computing environments. Our study explores methods that enable distributed data processing through AI-enabled edge devices, enhancing collaborative learning capabilities. A key focus of our research is the challenge of determining confidence levels in learning outcomes, considering the spatial and temporal variability of data sets encountered by independent agents. To address this issue, we investigate the application of Bayesian neural networks, proposing a novel approach to manage uncertainty in distributed learning environments.
Mounting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) holds promise for improving traditional terrestrial network performance. Unlike conventional methods deploying passive RIS on UAVs, this study delves into the efficacy of an aerial active RIS (AARIS). Specifically, the downlink transmission of an AARIS network is investigated, where the base station (BS) leverages rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) for effective interference management and benefits from the support of an AARIS for jointly amplifying and reflecting the BS's transmit signals. Considering both the non-trivial energy consumption of the active RIS and the limited energy storage of the UAV, we propose an innovative element selection strategy for optimizing the on/off status of RIS elements, which adaptively and remarkably manages the system's power consumption. To this end, a resource management problem is formulated, aiming to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS, the element activation, the phase shift and the amplification factor at the RIS, the RSMA common data rate at users, as well as the UAV's trajectory. Due to the dynamicity nature of UAV and user mobility, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm is designed for resource allocation, utilizing meta-learning to adaptively handle fast time-varying system dynamics. Simulations indicate that incorporating an active RIS at the UAV leads to substantial EE gain, compared to passive RIS-aided UAV. We observe the superiority of the RSMA-based AARIS system in terms of EE, compared to existing approaches adopting non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA).
The development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been gaining momentum in recent years owing to technological advances and a significant reduction in their cost. UAV technology can be used in a wide range of domains, including communication, agriculture, security, and transportation. It may be useful to group the UAVs into clusters/flocks in certain domains, and various challenges associated with UAV usage can be alleviated by clustering. Several computational challenges arise in UAV flock management, which can be solved by using machine learning (ML) methods. In this survey, we describe the basic terms relating to UAVS and modern ML methods, and we provide an overview of related tutorials and surveys. We subsequently consider the different challenges that appear in UAV flocks. For each issue, we survey several machine learning-based methods that have been suggested in the literature to handle the associated challenges. Thereafter, we describe various open issues in which ML can be applied to solve the different challenges of flocks, and we suggest means of using ML methods for this purpose. This comprehensive review may be useful for both researchers and developers in providing a wide view of various aspects of state-of-the-art ML technologies that are applicable to flock management.
